Erma Bombeck, the talented American writer and humorist,

once said, “I come from a family where gravy is considered a beverage.” That may be taking it a little too far for most people but, let’s face it, most of us will be overindulging in the food department this Thanksgiving. Turkey, ham, dressing, potatoes, cranberries, pies…the tempting treats just go on and on. I remember as a child that Thanksgiving was my second favorite holiday, just behind Christmas, of course. The extended family would gather together and I would eat myself into a coma; my stomach would be aching when I finally rose from the table and waddled over to a comfy spot on the rug to curl up and watch TV. Of course, the best thing to have done would probably have been to engage in a brisk game of touch football and run off all those calories, but my family was more Homer Simpson than John F. Kennedy, so waddling and curling were the activities of the day.

Cooking scrumptious meals and sharing them with family and friends is good for the soul and I’m sure a lot of you will be doing just that. But, if

cooking doesn’t appeal to you this holiday season, a wonderful variety of local eating establishments are just waiting to share their culinary expertise with you and your family. Check out the dining pages in our magazine for a list of eateries serving meals that range from good old down home cooking to elegant gourmet masterpieces. There are loads of wonderful restaurants in our community that remain open for the holiday. Many of them offer smoked turkeys and meats along with a variety of scrumptious sides that you can even pre-order and pick up for your Thanksgiving feast. Just think…if you throw away the containers you can claim the glory without ever having to break a sweat over a hot oven!

Black Friday comes right on the heels of Thanksgiving; just the opportunity to walk off those unwanted calories while you pick up some

great deals at community stores and boutiques. Our shopping pages are loaded with places that offer a wide variety of gifts and goodies for all the people on your holiday gift list. Don’t forget that shopping local benefits the community and is a great way to say thank you to hard working merchants.

Whatever your plans for this very special holiday, take time out to show thanks to the people who make your life worth living. All of us at My Hometowns Texas would like to thank you, our readers and advertisers, for your continued support and encouragement over the years. Here’s wishing you and yours the happiest and yummiest of Thanksgiving holidays!

Maybe just one more tiny piece of pumpkin pie please…

Well folks, we have ventured in to that time of year when holiday films

are bringing people to theatres in festive waves of romance, nostalgia, and comedy. This year will be no exception with a delightful line-up of perfectly packaged hits headed our way!

Although not officially a holiday film, The Peanuts Movie, is being released in accordance with former Peanuts films--during the start of the holiday season and will coincide with the 50th year anniversary of A Charlie Brown Christmas. (Smart move Fox studios! And CAN YOU BELIEVE it’s been fifty years!?!?) The film, which took over two years to convince the Schulz family to give rights to the studio to make, is once again based on Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and all their friends. In Peanuts, a 3D, CGI animated comedic adventure, Snoopy,

the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace! – embarks upon his greatest mission as he and his team take to the skies to pursue their arch-nemesis, while his best pal Charlie Brown begins his own epic quest back home. The film (along with flocks of kids of all ages) is expected to hit theatres nationwide on November 11th.

Bringing some comedy to the party this year is The Night Before, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie. Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) have been friends since childhood, and for a decade, their yearly Christmas Eve reunion has been an annual night of debauchery and hilarity. Now that they’re entering adulthood, the tradition is coming to an end, and to make it as memorable as possible, they set out to find the Nutcracka Ball - the Holy Grail of Christmas parties.

Of course, not all films will be holiday themed. In fact, a few are huge blockbusters that have had fans waiting all year for. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART TWO now brings the franchise to its powerful fourth chapter in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) now fully realizes the stakes are no longer just for survival -- they are for the future.

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss

confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games. In theaters nationwide November 20th.

Spectre, the latest James Bond film, is slated for November 6th and is already being called a classic. In it, a cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica

Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organization known as SPECTRE.

FUN FACT:

The Hunger Games is currently the third-most highlighted Kindle book of all time. The Bible is first. Author Suzanne Collins was trained in sword fighting, but believes if she were really in the Hunger Games, she’d only be scored a 4.

Native Texan, Linda Hunter Whitehouse, grew up in Fort Worth, and as a child spent most of her time drawing or coloring. Even then, she was preparing to be the artist

that retirement has given her the opportunity to become.

Linda took art classes at Castleberry High School, when they were offered, and says she probably would have studied art in college had she gone there directly from high school. Instead

she chose to pursue a degree in accounting, graduating from TCU with a BBA in the field. She did post graduate work in tax, working for an international CPA firm for a few years, and later managed a tax department for a large Fort Worth company. But, even as a full time tax CPA with a husband and four children, Linda would occasionally find time to paint. She took art lessons from Chris Hailey at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and Natural History for a few years in the 80’s and continued to develop her skills as an artist even with the time constraints of raising a family and working.

Her retirement in 2008 opened up

new opportunities for creating and enjoying art. Working in oils with combination brush and knife applications, Linda creates beautiful landscapes and still life paintings that spring off the canvas with their realistic colors and compositions. On hiking and camping trips with her husband Floyd, the artist always takes along her camera to capture ideas for new paintings. However, Linda doesn’t have to

Gary Morris is equally comfortable in front of the camera as he is

in nature, far away from it all. Besides his recurring acting roles in General Hospital, The Colbys, Designing Women and Mike Hammer, Morris has hosted multiple network shows including his own weekly TNN program, “The North American Sportsman,” which ran for five years. The show highlighted his love for the great outdoors, and featured such celebrity guests as Bryant Gumble, Troy Aikman and Larry Conk among others.

Morris is a prolific songwriter, but is best known for his recording of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” which went to number one and won song of the year from both the Country Music Association (CMA) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM). The song was later recorded by Bette Midler, who took the song to the top of the Pop charts. Morris has had 5 number 1’s and 16 top 10 singles on the Country Music charts. Besides his signature song, his many hits include; “Why Lady Why,” “Second Hand Heart,” “The Love She Found In Me,” “100% Chance of Rain,” “I’ll Never Stop Loving You,” and many more.

In 1982, Billboard Magazine named Gary Morris “Male Artist of the Year.” As his career began to soar in the mid 80s, Joseph Papp, one of the most influential producers in the history of the American theater, hand-picked the Texas-bred tenor and offered him the role of Rodolfo, starring

with fellow country and rock artist Linda Ronstadt, in the opera La Boheme. After some prodding, Gary accepted the offer.

Morris immediately returned to recording and touring, eventually garnering five number-one hits in Country Music, but Broadway began wooing him once again. Gary Morris returned to Broadway as the first American actor/singer to perform the lead role of Jean Valjean in the world-renowned Les Miserables at the height of its popularity. He received resounding critical praise, including a Drama Desk Best Actor nomination and a Command Performance for Queen Elizabeth. Morris’ famous rendition of “Bring Him Home” can be found on the platinum-selling Grammy Award winning international cast album.

Combining his love and skill of fly fishing with his respect and compassion for veterans, Morris has partnered with Project Healing Waters. (www.projecthealingwaters.org) Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) began in 2005 serving wounded military service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Morris is supporter of PHWFF and is very active in its various programs throughout the year.

Whether it is melting hearts with his voice and music, seizing the viewers’ attention with his relaxed and realistic acting, or stunning woodsmen with his outstanding venery skills, GARY MORRIS is one of the few men who can and does do it all.Gary Morris In Concert Saturday November 14!

– A Tribute to Weatherford’s Past

Grab your family and friends and head on out to the Historic

Downtown Weatherford Square, Saturday, November 7th for the Fourth Annual Hometown Heritage Stampede. This popular festival celebrates Weatherford’s historic western heritage and unique past with a variety of lively entertainment, delicious food, and fun activities. The event, hosted by the City of Weatherford Parks, Recreation, and Special Events Department, begins at 10a.m. and ends at 4p.m. and is FREE to the public!

Once again, the seven-piece Buttermilk Junction Band will be playing old-time American and Irish traditional music popular in Texas in the mid to late 1800’s on authentic instruments from the time. Also on hand to entertain will be Buffalo Bill’s Cowboy Band, providing a special concert of music from the Wild West era that thrilled crowds worldwide over a century ago. This full production, complete with skits and characters straight from the Wild West days of William F. Cody, Buffalo Bill himself, gives audience members the chance to experience the historical personalities of the time, all while listening to various compositions designed to delight with the raucous sounds of the brass, woodwinds, and percussion of the era.The Durham Family Trick Ropers, featuring rarely

performed horse catches, will thrill you as they merge great roping, talent, and lots of color into a spectacular show of skill. Kenneth and Kent Durham have entertained audiences for decades. Billed as the world’s most complete and fancy roping act, three generations of Durhams regularly perform at rodeos, wild-west shows, schools, conventions, in videos, commercials and on TV.

Along with all the exciting entertainment, visitors will enjoy a variety of food vendors, a Kiddie Korral children’s area, and pony rides. Chuck wagons and stage coaches will also be present during the festival for the public to enjoy, along with a longhorn steer photo opportunity.

Try your hand at swingin’ a lasso or just tap your boots to a good ole country band, but don’t miss what promises to be a rip-roaring good time at the 4th Annual Hometown Heritage Stampede!

– Exploring the Wonder of Texas History and the Magic of the Holidays One Step at a Time

The magic of Christmas is alive and well in Granbury, Texas this

holiday season as they welcome visitors to join them as they turn the clock back a century to experience a magical Victorian Christmas.

The holidays officially begin in Granbury on Friday, November 27th at 6p.m., when the Historic Granbury Merchants Association along with

the Granbury Ministerial Alliance presents the Granbury Country Christmas “Night of Lights” parade. Bring your lawn chairs and line up around the Downtown Historic Square, dress warm and listen to Christmas carols performed live beginning at 6p.m. Warm your

tummy with a cup of hot chocolate while you watch the “Night of Lights” parade beginning at 7p.m. Each year, local churches gather to compete in the parade, each entering lighted floats and competing to win the Best of Parade trophy. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also

be on hand to delight your children and listen to their Christmas wishes. The theme of the parade is “Those who walked in darkness have seen a great light”.

December brings us the Granbury Candlelight Tour of Homes, where each year the community bands together in an assemblage of lights, carols, Christmas treats and carriage rides. Moreover, a selected group of citizens open their private, historic homes to the public. Between volunteer docents and the

homeowners themselves, a story unfolds of each homes unique and rich history.

The Historic Granbury Merchants Association hosts the event and this year’s candlelight tour will be held on Friday, December 4th from 5 to 9p.m. and on Saturday, December 5th from 12 to 9p.m. Tickets are available for sale, through the weekend of the event, at Red on the Square. Ticket reservations can be made on the Merchants Association web www.granburysquare.com or Facebook page. Before November 30th pre-sale ticket reservations are $20 each and after the 30th they are $25 each. Children under the age of 8 receive free admission. All ticket sales are final as the tour goes on rain or shine. The tour is self-guided and though many of the homes and sites are in close proximity to the downtown square, the tour does require quite a bit of walking. So wear comfortable shoes and walk leisurely through the many beautiful homes available for viewing.

Since December 1983, the Historic Downtown Granbury Square has been the spot where the city comes to life each season with an air of the days of old and the miracle of the Christmas spirit. Make your way to Granbury for a truly magical holiday experience!

Here are the most proven ways to avoid getting sick this fall

Flu viruses kill thousands of people each year in the U.S., mostly the elderly or people with other health problems. Since 2010, the Centers for Disease Control have

recommended flu shots for everyone except infants younger than six months or people who are severely allergic to the vaccine. In healthy adults, flu vaccines can reduce illness and sick days. The effect is “very modest,” according to reviewers from the Cochrane Library, which pools medical studies and evaluates the evidence. At least 40 people need to be vaccinated to prevent one illness, the research suggests. But getting healthy people vaccinated is important to protect the more vulnerable. “The more of us that get the vaccines, the less likely all of us are to get sick,” said Donald Ford, a family physician at the Cleveland Clinic.

Vitamin C doesn’t prevent colds, according to evidence from dozens of trials involving more than 11,000 people. There’s some evidence that people who were already taking C supplements had slightly shorter colds when they got sick. But waiting until your cold starts to take vitamin C doesn’t seem to do anything, though researchers note that more studies are needed. Limited evidence suggests zinc may slightly reduce the length of colds, and zinc supplements are widely marketed as remedies. But doctors don’t recommend zinc for colds. It can have side effects, sometimes serious ones: The Food and Drug Administration warned about zinc nasal sprays in 2009 after 130 people reported they lost the sense of smell.

Antibiotics can kill bacteria, not viruses. They’re useless against the common cold or flu. Doctors sometimes prescribe them anyway, particularly if patients badger them. Don’t. Unless you have another, bacterial infection, antibiotics won’t help. They will increase the risk of side effects such as diarrhea, though. And misuse of antibiotics contributes to the rise of drug-resistant superbugs in the population as a whole.

While the value of garlic in the kitchen isn’t disputed, the evidence for keeping it in your medicine cabinet is thin. Reviewers found one trial with 146 people that reported that three months of garlic supplements seemed to reduce the frequency of colds compared with a placebo. More studies are needed to validate that finding. Most of garlic’s health claims “rely largely on poor-quality evidence,” Cochrane reviewers wrote. Possible side effects: rash, and smelling like garlic. The case for using echinacea to treat a cold is shaky. “It is possible there is a weak benefit,” according to the Cochrane review. Trials for prevention indicated “small preventive effects,” though patients experienced more side effects than patients taking a placebo, including allergic reactions.

Eating well, exercising, and managing other medical conditions can help you stay healthy, said Pritish Tosh, an infectious-

disease doctor at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Sleep and peace of mind help, too. “In general, we find that when people have a lot of stress or have sleep deprivation, there’s a lot of health problems that result,” Tosh said. “That can include becoming more susceptible to infections.”

“The single most effective prevention for the spread of viruses is hand hygiene,” said the Cleveland Clinic’s Ford. Viruses expelled when people sneeze, cough, or talk can linger on desks, doorknobs, elevator buttons, and other surfaces. Practice the vampire sneeze into the crook of your arm.

If you do get sick, get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids. It’s the best way you can help your body clear an infection that will go away on its own.

When people try to power through an illness, “they actually make it worse for the people around them, and they make it worse for themselves,” Tosh said. (Doctors and nurses are bad at following this advice.) People are often most contagious during the early stages of a viral infection. Staying home when you first get sick can protect your co-workers and give your body more rest. It’s a tricky calculation for some. “Many people in this country don’t get paid if they don’t go to work,” Ford noted. If you can afford to, do everyone a favor and take a sick day.

At 2535 W. Hwy 377, on the far west side of

town, across the bridge, you will discover the Outlaws Trading Post. There you can find everything under the sun, feed, hay, animal health products, saddles, tack, home decor, antiques, furniture, lawn/garden decor, metal roses, guns with ammo, conches and more, oh, so much more.

On November 21, they will have the first of many to come, Gun Sale and Live Auction. The activities begin at 1 pm with a live auction of farm and ranch home décor. Throughout the day

they will be cooking some of the awesome ranch-raised Texas beef from Deep Rock Cattle Company. Then, at 6 pm, over 300 guns new & used will be available for sale and during the live auction.

Owners Lisa Guthrie and her husband, Glen, have always worked together. They started their first business a couple of years after they married, about 25 years ago. They first ventured into Dollar Stores in the 1990’s. By 2003, the store became Iron Works/Cheapo Depot, which included western décor. Earlier this year, they sold the Cheapo Depot, a wholesale import business, closed the Fort Worth location and moved it all to Granbury.

The warehouse behind the Outlaws Trading Post

still houses the Dollar Plus Liquidators, but they are strictly wholesale and sell by appointment only. Outlaws Trading Post is the culmination of all their years of retail/wholesale business experience.

Glen and Lisa raised a family on their retail businesses, one son, who is 18 attending Junior college and a daughter, 21 who is already working at a pediatric dentist’s office. “Me and the kids took little vacations while Glen stayed behind and held down the fort.” Lisa says, now, “…we work, eat dinner and sleep.”

They enjoy other activities, Glen is a licensed auctioneer, “…and we hold auctions once a month at Canton Trade Days. Glen likes to team rope steer, too,” Lisa told me. Their love of the retail industry shows in how well they blend all the different merchandise they offer, and how well they treat customers. Comments like the ones below are common on their Facebook page:

Carol Brock Cox-5 stars. This store has really cute decor, is laid out really well, has great prices and the people are very friendly. This will be my “go to” store for gifts.January 2, 2015

David Salzbrenner-5 stars. New to the Granbury area. Has your animal health needs, large and small. Something for everyone. From antiques to home Decor. Great store and location. September 10, 2014

Outlaws Trading Post will extend hours after Black Friday, staying open till 7 p.m. and will be open on Sundays, 12-5. Regular hours are, Mon-Fri 9-6, Sat 9-5 and they can be reached at (817) 579-9635. https://www.facebook.com/OutlawsTradingPost Website: www.cheapodepot.com
