Grand Knight’s Column I want to take this time to thank Brother Mike Agius for doing an excellent job in organizing the Evening Celebrating our Parish Priests, Past Priests, and Vocations to the priesthood. The event was held on Saturday, October 15th beginning with a Mass at 5:00 p.m. and followed by a reception in the Atonement Family Centre. It was a great evening. I would like to remind all of my Brother Knights that we are holding a membership drive on November 5th and 6th jointly with the CWL. Please ask a fellow Catholic gentleman, whether a parishioner, a neighbour, a co-worker, or a friend to become a Knight in our Council. Also please volunteer at any of the Masses that weekend to help with the liturgies. Gentlemen, please remember to pray the Hail Mary a Day that our Council is sponsoring in our parish. We are having a Corporate Communion at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, November 20th; it will be followed by a breakfast to be held in the Atonement Family Centre. It is your obligation as a Knight to attend this function. Tickets for the breakfast are only $5.00 each, and children are admitted free. See you there. On November 11th let us keep in our prayers and thoughts all of the military service men and women who gallantly gave their lives in all the past wars and conflicts so that we might enjoy the freedoms that we have today. Remember – ask a Catholic man to become a Knight. Oh come, oh come EmmanuelThe Church dedicates most of the days in the Liturgical Calendarto one or more saints or to a solemnity. The purpose is that we thefaithful would contemplate the lives of these saints and to followtheir example. So, how many saints are there? The answer isapproximately 10,000, 482 of which were canonized by Pope JohnPaul II.

So, is that it, 10,000 saints? Of course not. They are the holypeople who have been declared saints by the Church through theprocess of beatification and canonization. Saints are all those soulswho have gained admission into the Heavenly Kingdom. Sincethe dawn of creation there have been countless people who livedholy yet ordinary lives and are now in the presence of God; theytoo are saints. Among them we might count our deceased familymembers, friends, colleagues, and neighbours - the unknown saintsof everyday life. We too hope to join the ranks of the saints;admission into Heaven automatically makes you a saint.

It is for this reason that the Church celebrates All Saints Day onNovember 1st, to honour all those nameless, faceless souls who arein Heaven; the saints that we are not aware of. On November 2nd

we observe All Souls’ Day to remember in a special way thosedeparted souls who have not yet gained entry into Heaven. Weremember them especially on that day in the hope that our prayerswill speed their union with all the other saints in Heaven wherethey in turn will intercede for us.

November 11th holds a special place in the Canadian calendar –we observe Remembrance Day. On that day we might want totake a moment to remember and honour the memory of thosemembers of the military services who gave their lives in the serviceof Canada and freedom.

The feast of Christ the King falls on November20th and it marks the last Sunday in theLiturgical Year. On that day, we celebrate thefeast of Christ the King; King of Kings andLord of Lords; Lord of Heaven and Earth; thevery first martyr of our faith.

November 27th is the First Sunday of Adventmarking the first day of the new liturgical year;so we might want to wish each other a HappyNew Year. Advent is a period of four weeks ofjoyful waiting and anticipation in preparation for the celebrationof the Birth of Our Lord – Christmas. The word Advent comesfrom the Latin word advenire; a compound word from ad meaninghere and venire meaning to come. That is why we sing “Oh come,oh come Immanuel and ransom captive Israel…”

St. Andrew was a businessman, a partner in the fishingtrade with his brother St. Peter. The Gospel tells usthat he was a disciple of John the Baptist whofollowed Jesus after John the Baptist declared“Behold the Lamb of God” at the Jordan when Jesuswas baptised making him the first disciple of Jesus. It was he who brought his brother Peter to Jesus;although they both continued in the fishing trade untilJesus called them to follow Him saying “Follow me,and I will make you fishers of men.” It is believed

that St. Andrew was martyred by being tied to a cross in the shapeof an X, from where he preached for two days until he died. He isthe patron saint of Scotland - the white X cross on a blue backgroundwhich is the flag of Scotland represents the cross of St. Andrew. He is also the patron saint of Russia, and of fishermen. The Churchdedicates November 30th to St. Andrew the Apostle.

From our Insurance AgentWhat is a R.R.I.F. (and How Does It Work)

A Registered Retirement Income Fund, or RRIF, is like an interest-earning account from which you receive income payments. From a tax standpoint, there are significant advantages toyou in establishing a RRIF.

You may be aware that under Revenue Canadarules, your Registered Retirement Savings Plan(RRSP) contract ends at the end of the calendar yearin which you turn age 69. If you take a lump sumdistribution, you're required by Revenue Canada to pay incometaxes on the entire sum! However, if you roll those funds into aRRIF, taxes are deferred in much the same way as they were beforeretirement. You'll owe income tax each year just on the principaland interest that's paid to you - provided you stay within certainlimits.

You can start your Knights of Columbus RRIF with a singlepremium from:

- a KofC RRSP- any other financial institution’s RRSP- another RRIF

Transfers from a registered pension plan are not allowed.Retirement has been referred to as one's "golden years". Two blond men were working for the city public works department. One was digging holes and the other followed behind him filling theholes in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day withoutrest, one guy digging holes, the other guy filling them in.An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understandwhat they were doing. So he asked the hole-digger, “I'm impressedby the effort you two are putting into your work, but I don't get it.Why are you digging holes, only to have your partner follow behindand filling them in?”The hole-digger wiped his brow and sighed, “Well, I suppose itprobably looks odd because we're normally a three-man team. Buttoday the guy who plants the trees called in sick.”

Lest We ForgetVery late in the evening of August 18th 1942, a fleet of 29 Allied military ships and 231 landing craft sailed out of severalanchorages in southern England bound for Hitler's Fortress Europe. Aboard the fleet was an attack force of about 6,100 men.It consisted of 50 U.S. Rangers, 1087 British Commandos and Marines, and 4,963 men from the 2nd Canadian Division, including 553 men from the Essex Scottish Regiment of Windsor-Essex. They were headed for the French port city ofDieppe. The raid, which was undertaken without the approval of the Combined Chiefs of Staff, was led by Lord LouisMountbatten, Chief of Combined Operations. Operation Jubilee, also known as the Dieppe Raid, was under way.

Things began to go wrong early on the morning of August 19th when elements of theraiding fleet encountered a German convoy close to the French coast. The Germanconvoy was driven off but it managed to alert the coastal defences. The element of surprise was lost. Theraid began with some success at 4:50 a.m. when the 4th Commando neutralized an artillery battery. By thetime that the Canadians landed around Dieppe at about 5:20 a.m., the opposing forces were ready for them.Heavy automatic weapons rained fire down on the Canadians from the surrounding cliffs and houses on theseafront. The Canadians were pinned down behind the seawall, and the tanks of the 14th Canadian ArmyTank Regiment could make no headway on the shale beach. Almost all of the tank crews were either killedor captured. The order to withdraw was issued at 11:00 a.m. and the entire operation was over by 1:00 p.m.By the end of the day 1,874 Canadians were taken prisoners of war,and 907 were killed or missing in action - 121 of the dead or missingwere from the Essex Scottish Regiment - and all of the 50 Canadiantanks were destroyed. Of the 2,210 Canadians who made it back toEngland, 1,974 were wounded. The Canadian forces had sustained

over 95% in casualties. Of the 1,000 Allied aircraft that provided air cover during the operation,106 were lost including 13 RCAF aircraft. It was a military disaster brought about by poorplanning and the arrogance of the operaton’s leader who could have abandoned the raid when itwas clear that the element of surprise had been compromised. Such is the folly of war.On November 11th let us all spare a moment to remember those brave men who gave their livesor spent years in POW camps in the fight against Nazi oppression so that we might enjoy thefreedom that many of us take for granted. That freedom was paid for in blood.

It is to honour the brave men of the Essex Scottish Regiment that Dieppe Gardens Park on our riverfront was named.

Dedication of the Father Michael McGivney Memorial

It is finally here. The long anticipated dedication of thestatue of our founder, Fr. Michael McGivney, took place at Heavenly Rest Cemetery on Saturday,

September 25th. His Excellency Bishop Anthony Daniels presided over the colourful yet simple ceremony attended by many BrotherKnights and their wives. Adding colour and circumstance to the dedication was the presence of a 14-man strong 4th Degree HonourGuard. The ceremony was followed by a small reception. Our Council can be justifiably proud of our contribution of $2,000 to fund thisvery worthwhile project. Our Council’s name is engraved on the left granite stone of the sponsor section of the memorial. The pictureson this page are some of the ones taken on the occasion.

who is in hospital or shut-in.2. On occasion, volunteer your services to assist in visiting these

members.3. Make an effort to attend prayers or funerals in memory of any

Brother Knight or a family member.4. Our Executive Meetings and General Meetings are held on

Tuesday nights. There is always a Mass on Tuesday nights at6:30 pm. I think that as Catholic gentlemen it would really besetting the example of our principles if all Knights made aneffort, wherever possible, to attend Mass before our meetings.

Please feel free to call me at any time if you hear of a BrotherKnight or one of his family members who is ill so we can pay themthe proper respect. My phone number is 735-4933.

Fraternally yours,

Deputy Grand Knight’s ColumnOn a flight from Johannesburg South Africa, a middle-aged, well-offwhite South African woman found herself sitting next to a black man.She called the cabin crew attendant over to complain about her seating.“What seems to be the problem Madam?” asked the attendant. “Can’tyou see?” she said, “You’ve sat me next to a kafir. I can’t possibly sitnext to this disgusting person. Find me another seat!””Please calm down, Madam.” the stewardess replied, “The flight isvery full today, but I’ll tell you what I can do; I’ll go and check to seeif we have any seats available in club or first class.”

The woman cocked a snooty look at the outraged black man besideher and at many of the surrounding passengers. A few minutes laterthe stewardess returned with the good news, which she delivered tothe woman, who could not help but look at the people around herwith a smug and self-satisfied grin. “Madam, unfortunately, as Isuspected, economy is full. I’ve spoken to the cabin services director, and club is also full. However, we do have one seat in first class.”

Before the woman had a chance to answer, the stewardess continued...“It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, however, andI had to get special permission from the captain. But, given thecircumstances, the captain felt that it was outrageous that someoneshould be forced to sit next such an obnoxious person.

Having said that, the stewardess turned to the black man sitting nextto the woman, and said “So if you’d like to get your things, Sir, I haveyour seat ready for you...”

At which point, the surrounding passengers stood and gave a standingovation while the black man was escorted up to the front of the plane.

Paul De.Ruyter, Deputy Grand KnightA Celebration In Honour of the PriesthoodThe plans and hard work of Brother Mike Agius finally came tocompletion on Saturday, October 15th with a celebration honouringour priests, past and present, and the institution of the priesthood.

The occasion began with the 5:00 p.m. Mass concelebrated byBishop Anthony Daniels, Fr. Clare Coleman, Fr. Mike Graham, and Fr. Pascal Breau who came especially from Toronto for theoccasion. Our Council’s Choir sang harmoniously during thecelebration.

Following the Mass, many parishioners attended a dinner in ourFamily Centre to honour our priests. As Bishop Daniels and thereverend fathers entered the hall, they were welcomed with astanding ovation. Fr. Matt Bedard, was also welcomed with astanding ovation when he arrived for the dinner after celebratingMass at St. Anne’s in Tecumseh.

The MC for the evening was Brother John Barron who very ablyconducted the proceedings periodically injecting some humour withan occasional joke. Bishop Daniels led the gathering in sayinggrace which was followed by a delicious dinner. As is customaryon such occasions a number of people gave short speeches. Thehighlight of the evening was the presentation of certificates ofappreciation to reverend fathers in attendance and theannouncement that, since Fr. Clare and Fr. Mike declined acceptinggifts, our Council will give a special gift to our church by fundingthe cost of a multimedia system to be installed in the church. Asanticipated, Fr. Pascal entertained the gathering with severalhumourous stories.

It was a great evening, and Brother Mike Agius should be proud ofhaving been the primary force in making it a reality.

Please turn to page 8 for some photos taken at this event.
