As we enter August, hopefully your
councils are continuing to be active in all
areas – Programming and Membership.
We have been working hard to change
the culture of some councils who “take
the summer off” by not meeting, con-
ducting programs, nor being member-
ship active. Please make sure you per-
sonally ask a Catholic gentleman to join our brotherhood at every oppor-
tunity you have.
Most District meetings have already been conducted, while some are
scheduled for this month, but whether your District has had its meeting yet
or not, we hope you are busy planning out your fraternal year. If you have
not done so yet, your District Deputy needs to conduct Officer Installations
for you. You also need to make sure you have all of the necessary
paperwork filed with Supreme (e.g. the Service Program Personnel Report
(#365) which was due on August 1, and the Council Audit (#1295) which
is due on August 15). An easy way to keep on top of this is to utilize the
“Fraternal Leader Success Planners” which were given to DDs in July.
Each DD received 5 copies for each council, and they were to be provided
to the Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Program Director, and
Membership Director and one for anyone else who would like to have it.
If you use these planners, it will be very easy to keep on top of programs
and forms needed by Supreme. Plus we strongly suggest that you add State
events to these planners as well (e.g. State Per Capita was due on August
1, orders for Tootsie Rolls are due by August 24, orders for Roses for Life
are due by September 15, etc.)
On August 4-6 the Supreme Convention will be taking place in
Philadelphia. EWTN will be televising the Opening Mass, Opening
Session, and States Dinner, all on Tuesday, so I hope you are able to tune
in and watch. I am very pleased to report that on Wednesday, a represen-
tative from Council 1270 from Martinsburg will be receiving the Supreme
Family Service Program of the Year award from Supreme Knight Carl
Anderson. After the death of one its members, this council came together
to feed his cattle, harvest his crops, and get his equipment ready for a farm
sale so his widowed mother would not need to worry about it. It is nice to
win an award, but as Brothers, that is simply what we do for one another.
I’m really looking forward to a productive year! Working together, just
like the Martinsburg council, we can all truly make a difference in our
church and in our communities.
We just completed the July Dis-
trict Deputy Meeting and were for-
tunate to have our new Supreme
Membership Program Consultant
(MPC) Dannie Harris in attendance.
Dannie covered the outline for this
year as set by Supreme. We have
goals this year of 1575 new mem-
bers, 3 new Councils and 41 Star
Councils. These are numbers that
are within our reach. Supreme has
stated many times that we do not
recruit during the summer months. I
have found this to be true! From
July to September we took in roughly
80 members per month. With one
month getting 68. From October to
Our financial goal this year for
the Religious Information Bureau
(RIB) is $285,000. We did very well
last year, finishing only about $7,500
from the all-time record. This year
we can exceed that record and meet
our goal. The first step to doing so is
being aware of the “quota letter” that
will be sent out in August to all
Councils and Auxiliaries. To reach
our goal we ask that each Knight
donate at least $7.50 to the RIB, and
that each member of the Ladies Aux-
iliary donate at least $3.75 per mem-
ber. The RIB quota for each Council
and Auxiliary is based on these
amounts multiplied by the number
of members. The quota letter will
show the amounts needed to reach
100% and 125% of quota. Reaching
these goals serve as the basis for the
various Council, Auxiliary, and Dis-
trict Deputy awards described in the
Program Manual. The quota letter
establishes the benchmarks that each
Council and Auxiliary should reach
for this year in supporting the RIB.
Please keep in mind that we are the
sole source of revenue for the RIB.
The generous donations of Knights
and Ladies to the RIB is critical
because the RIB serves to promote a
ministry of evangelization. As
Catholics it is our responsibility to
do all we can to help spread the word
of God. The RIB is a Missouri Pro-
gram that allows us to do this by
reaching people from around the
world.
Financial support is critical to the
RIB, but it is equally important that
we do what we can to promote our
Program, especially at the local level.
August is typically the time in which
many parishes begin child and adult
education and faith formation pro-
grams. Let your parish know of the
availability of the RIB materials as a
resource for these programs. To ob-
tain free informational pamphlets
and leaflets describing the free
courses available through the Catho-
lic Home Study Service, please see
the RIB section of the Program
Manual, visit www.morib.org, or call
the Catholic Home Study Service at
573-547-4084. Consider taking a set
of the Catholic Home Study Service
course books to your priest or CFP
program coordinator. If I may be of
any assistance, please call me at 816
305-5957.
August is a very important time
of year for councils to be planning
our state community activities.
At this time I hope most councils
already have a chairman and dates
for their October Drive for Persons
with Developmental Disabilities
(Tootsie Roll Drive). If not, please do so immediately. Tootsie
Roll orders should be placed by August 24, 2015. If you order 33
cases or more, shipping is free, so check with your district deputy
about combining orders if needed. Plans are being made for
kickoff events at the end of August and early September in several
areas of the state. Your district deputy will have more information.
If you need help, contact Dave Bramman, East Chairman or
Roland Cretel, Jr., West Chairman. It is important that every
council participate in the 3D Drive. This is the single biggest
statewide activity of the Knights of Columbus, and it supports the
Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon
Children’s Hospital. This is the only freestanding center of its kind
and it bears our name. Let’s work together and support this
program.
This is also a good time to be planning your support for Special
Olympics. We would love Councils to hold some kind of fundraiser
to support this program in Missouri. An easy way to do this is to
designate part of your turnaround funds from the 3D Drive to go
to Special Olympics. A breakfast or a dinner is also a good option.
Even more importantly, invite a Special Olympian to take part in
your 3D Drive. Almost every county in Missouri has Special
Olympic athletes. Chairman Jim O’Fallon can help you make this
happen.
Chairman Cliff Miller is looking for councils and parishes to
host Wheelchair Sundays. August is a good time to contact your
parish priest about an available Sunday later in the year.
Chairman Tom Caffrey is heading up Food for Families and
our new Coats for Kids Program. If your Council contributes $500
or 1,000 pounds of food to a local food pantry, you are eligible for
a rebate from the Supreme Council. Consider a district activity for
our Coats for Kids Program. Tom is ready and willing to help.
Chairman Teak Phillips heads up a new program helping the
Knights become second responders in case of a disaster. Teak is
compiling a list of Knights of Columbus resources to be available
in case of a disaster. If he contacts your council please help.
Chairman Dennis Buchheit continues to do a great job helping
Councils with publicity. He is also our liaison to the Missouri
Catholic Conference and keeps the state of Missouri informed on
legislation of interest to Catholics.
July we averaged 145 new mem-
bers. As our former MPC Tom
Ciborski stated “It’s hard to win a
football game when you only show
up for 3 quarters”.
The Supreme Council asks that
we still hold One 1st Degree per
District per month. We have also
started a vigorous campaign of 1st,
2nd & 3rd Degrees during the sum-
mer months and will follow that up
with major regional degrees quar-
terly. No area is out of range for
conferring the honor of Knight-
hood in our order. The other topic
that was covered was the October
Church Drive. All Councils are
asked to hold a Church Drive in
October. Reporting is required for
all Church Drives and will be going
out. The first report will ask which
Councils are hosting a drive. The
other will be a follow up on how the
drive went. They will be looking
for how many Form 100’s were
given out, 1st Degree held etc. It is
not too early to start booking your
churches.
Together we can attain the cov-
eted “Circle of Honor Award” for
the 1st time in 6 years.
It was great to see all the DD’s,
Chairmen, Directors, and Officers
once again at the July meeting. I hope
that you did learn something and are
fired up and energized to begin an-
other fraternal year leading your dis-
tricts. I know I’m excited to begin
another year under the guidance of
our State Deputy Keith Milson and as
Family Life Activities Director. I hope
all the councils have officers in place
and are fired up as well.
First of all here are a few dates to
write down on your calendars.
Saturday September 5th is the
Family day at the ballpark St. Louis
Cardinals will be hosting the Pittsburg
Pirates for a 3:05 game. We have
moved the seating this year to the
right field side in sections 228 and
229. We have several tickets left so
PLEASE call Bill Schulte and re-
serve yours today. Tickets are $23.00
with $5.00 going to Cardinal Glennon
Knight’s wing. That day we will also
host an open house at the hospital. So
take the day and see what the Knights
do for the kids in YOUR wing then
enjoy the game.
Recognition Chairman Bobby Abney
is waiting for your submissions for
youth, knight, and family of the
month. Here are the deadlines for the
next submittals:
• Family - September 15th
• Knight - July 31st and Septem-
ber 30th
• Youth – September 1st
Please consider honoring a knight,
family, or youth by sending in an
application. They can be found on the
website mokofc.org under programs/
family involvement/ then click on the
submission you want. Either submit
on line or print off and mail it.
Lastly Family Involvement West
Chairman has set up a date for a night
with the Mavericks. Stay tuned for
further information on this as well.
Here are some suggested Building
the Domestic Church activities for
August
• Invite another family member or
someone you know who may be alone
to join your family for Mass, a social
event, or another activity. Council
activities revolve around bringing
families together and may include:
Cleaning, painting, or repairing a
house of an elderly person
• Hold a banquet to honor all the
Family of the month and family of the
year recipients
• Sponsor a family picnic or sports
competition
Good Luck!!

I hope you are all settled into what
role you hold in your Council or Ladies
Auxiliary and have made plans for a
great successful fraternal year. The slo-
gan that I used last year was “Do More -
Strengthen the Church” and I think it is so
appropriate this year as well as the Church
is getting attacked in so many ways. I
know that the Knights of Columbus will
rise up and defend what we know is right!
One of the primary Church Activities that I hope you establish in your
Council first is the support of Vocations. I see vocations in three distinct
areas and not in any particular order as all aspects are important. One area
is Awareness and Prayer, another is the Refund Support Vocations Pro-
gram (RSVP) along with the Adopt-a-Seminarian and the last but not least
is the Missouri Religious Vocations Fund (MRVF) which supports Future
Vocations.
Awareness and Prayer should be a natural for your Council, Ladies
Auxiliary or Assembly. Is Vocations encouraged in the Parishes you
support? Have you established a Vocations awareness program? Have you
asked your Parish Priest what you can do to help when it comes to
Vocations? Do you encourage Prayer for Vocations to your members and
Parish? The Supreme card that you can order, item #4200, is a nice prayer
card to hand out to your Parish and Council.
Many Missouri Councils and Assemblies utilize the Supreme Refund
Support Vocations Program (RSVP). This $500 donation goes directly
to a Seminarian or Postulate to help him or her with their expenses. This
money does not go to the Diocese or to the Seminary or Convent they are
attending. Once you file the appropriate Supreme paperwork, your Council
or Assembly will receive a $100 refund. Along with the financial support,
you also need to provide moral support. This can be in the form of cards or
letters or an email of support. I have heard directly from new Religious that
this really makes a difference as they go through discernment to know that
there is a group of men and women supporting them. Include the Seminar-
ian or Postulate in your newsletters and make sure they are mentioned.
Your Diocesan Chairman, that supports the Diocese you are in, will be the
one to assign you a Seminarian or Postulate. He works closely with each
Diocese to provide you this information. Be sure to let him know if you are
supporting a particular Seminarian or Postulate now so he can make sure
it is recorded and the Diocese is informed. Copy him in on your RSVP form
when it is filled out. The bottom of the Supreme form has you send a copy
to the State Vocations Chairman, which is the Diocesan Chairman! Fill out
the area of Moral Support as well. The Supreme Council may send the form
back to you or not send you the $100 refund. Some Councils cannot afford
to support a Seminarian or Postulate with $500. Consider one of two
options. You can offer support through the Adopt-a-Seminarian State
Program or save up the monies $50 a month. The Adopt-a-Seminarian
state program will give your Council a chance to morally support a
particular Seminarian or Postulate. That sometimes is more important than
the financial support. Again, contact your Diocesan Chairman to get
someone assigned to you and you can find the Diocesan Chairman for your
area in the new Program Guide. The goal of each Diocesan Chairman is to
support 100% of the available Seminarians or Postulates in each Diocese.
The Missouri Religious Vocations Program (MRVF) is different
than the RSVP. The monies from the MRVF go directly to one of the four
Dioceses in our State. There has been a lot of confusion in this area as
Councils think that if they support a Seminarian or Postulate through the
RSVP that they have made the commitment to the MRVF. Each program
is different and we encourage you to support both! The “suggested”
donation to the MRVF is $.50 per member. Those Councils, Auxiliaries or
Assemblies that want to make a “real” commitment to Future Vocations
give $1.00 per member. In the scheme of things this is a very small
donation. If we can get every Council, Auxiliary or Assembly in the State
to make the $1.00 donation per member, we would go a long ways to
making our goal of $15,000 per year. Last year we fell short of our goal by
around $2,000. Chairman Joe Stoverink will be contacting the leaders in
your Council, Auxiliary or Assembly to encourage you to make a donation
this year. Those that contributed last year, thank you so much, and please
be sure to contribute this year. Each one of our Dioceses uses these monies
the best they can in support of Vocations. Some use it directly to help out
Seminarians; others use it in vocation support programs. I think of it as
Faith Insurance as we invest in Future Vocations!

Well I hope after reading the
opening paragraph you did get a
little excited. You have to remem-
ber Council Activities has programs
that help your councils and auxilia-
ries to attract potential members to
join.
Let’s start with our Sports Pro-
gram, we have 5 fabulous sporting
events each year. Beginning with
our annual Softball Tournament.
This year it was held at the Ozzie
Smith Sports Complex in O’Fallon,
Missouri. 18 teams competed, it was
a very successful event. They were
able to raise $650 for the “Meet
Life” program. The tournament will
return to the same facility next year.
So mark your calendars for June
25th and 26th 2016, for the State
Softball Tournament. If your coun-
cil does not currently have a team,
consider forming one, see if you can
attract new Knight members who
would love to play softball, and join
the team!
Moving onto golf, we just com-
pleted the 2015 State Golf Tourna-
ment in Union, Missouri on July
18th 2015. The numbers are not in
for this year at the time of this writ-
ing, but if it was like last year it was
very successful. We are excited to
announce the 2016 Golf Tourna-
ment will be in the Kansas City area.
I know there are a lot of Catholic
men and women who love to play
golf. Have you considered starting
your own golf club within your coun-
cils or auxiliaries?
One of my favorite sports will be
coming up later in August. Our State
Horseshoe Tournament, this year
being held in Bloomsdale, Missouri,
August 15th and 16th. This is a
sport both men and women can do
and enjoy. My own Council has
practices with the men and ladies on
Wednesday evenings at the hall.
Everyone has a great time as we
practice to compete in the State
Tournament. Another great oppor-
tunity to invite potential new mem-
bers to see we can have fun too. You
may want to start practicing now for
next year’s tournament in Scott City.
Finally we have a couple more
sporting events this year that are
great opportunities for you to gener-
ate new members to the Knights of
Columbus. Our State Sporting Clay/
Trap Shoot will be held September
19th in Old Monroe, at the
Blackhawk Valley Hunting Club.
Bowling is still a popular sport I am
sure that potential nonmembers in
your parishes participate in leagues.
Why not start a local Council league,
it may just spark interest to become
a member of your council so they
can participate in the fun. Our State
Tournament will be weekends of
October 17th and 18th and continue
on October 24th and 25th. For ques-
tions about any of these sporting
events, please call our Sporting
Events Chairman, Ennis Wm
Hinkebein II at 573-243-3367.
To continue the fun have you
considered being a “Clown”? The
Missouri Knights have Clown clubs
around the State, they are always
looking for more folks to join and
participate. A club can be started
with just two people. What is really
nice about a Clown Club they can be
any age, men, women, child, grand-
child and do not have to be members
of the Knights. The club can be
sponsored by a Council, District or
a Chapter. Another great way to
attract a new member.
A brand new program to is our
Knights on Bikes, they are new to
our State program but they are not
new to the Knights of Columbus.
Started in 2005 they consist of mem-
bers who are motorcycle riders.
What is nice about this group you
can start one in your council, they
collect no dues, it’s a great way of
establishing a fraternal brotherhood
among other Knights locally, re-
gionally, and nationally. Qualifica-
tions for being a member is easy,
members must be a 1st degree Knight
own a motorcycle or have a motor-
cycle within 6 months of joining the
club. If you have questions about
our Clown Clubs, Knights on Bikes
please contact our new Events/
Activities Chairman Ron Stuppy
at 573-883-6782.
These are just a few of the pro-
grams we offer in Council Activi-
ties that can potentially help your
Council or District grow member-
ship. If you are interested in what is
going on in Council Activities,
please check out our pages in the
State Directory and Program
Manual. Until next time! Vivat Jesus
By now most of you should have
attended your District Meetings and
met with your DD and Brother
Knights who are council leaders in
your area. Did you place your Roses
for Life order with your District
Deputy? Has your council sched-
uled a Baby Bottle Campaign for
the fraternal year? Do you have a
plan for reaching or exceeding your
goal for the Meet Life Campaign if
you have not already? Now is the
time of year to be making these
plans for the fraternal year.
Sunday, August 9th is the start of
the Silver Rose Run throughout
Missouri. This year’s run will start
at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica
in St. Louis and will run across the
northern part of the state then down
through Central Missouri before
heading to Sedalia and the Lake.
From there it will go down to Spring-
field and work its way back up 44 to
South County, St. Louis and back
down 55. The run will conclude on
Sunday, August 31st in Sikeston
before crossing the river over to
Kentucky. There is a complete itin-
erary on the state website along with
contact names, locations and dates
of the various events. Chairman Tom
Mattingly has been busy putting the
run together and is also working
with the Knights on Bikes and Run-
ners for Life to help escort the Rose
along its journey through Missouri.
If you have any questions or would
like to help escort the Rose please
contact Brother Mattingly.
If you did not turn in your Roses
for Life order at your District Meet-
ing, now is the time to take an inven-
tory of your Roses and determine
how many your council will need to
order. Make sure you give your or-
der to your DD before September 15
so that he can get his order turned
into Chairman Tom Mattingly by
October 1. Don’t forget, you can
also order Roses without the em-
blem of the order if your council
supplies Roses to other organiza-
tions or churches in your commu-
nity.
Now is the time to start planning
your events, activities and
fundraisers for the fraternal year.
Contact Meet Life Chairman Lou
Holtmann with your schedule for
fundraisers, dinners, baby bottle
campaign or any other activity you
want him to attend and provide any
support materials, displays or even
to speak. Of course before you start
planning any event or activity, make
sure you talk to your parish priest. A
fundraiser can be as simple as re-
questing to have a second collection
taken up for the Meet Life Cam-
paign during mass one weekend.
One of the easiest and most ef-
fective ways to help your council
meet this goal is by conducting a
Baby Bottle Campaign. The State
Council has an inventory of Baby
Bottles for your use strategically
located throughout the state along
with a Baby Bottle Board for each of
the four Diocese to assist you. If
your council is ready to conduct a
Baby Bottle Campaign or would
like further information regarding
how they work please contact Chair-
man Ed Spence. Brother Ed will
coordinate the efforts of the four
Baby Bottle Boards in order to pro-
vide you with all of the information,
guidance and support that you will
need to conduct a successful cam-
paign.
I ask each of you to end all of
your meetings and gatherings with
three Hail Mary’s for the end of
abortions and remember to Celebrate
Everything!
Ladies, as we get to the end of summer,
we hope all have been able to get to a
District Deputy meeting. Your District
Deputy has your Program Directory for
this 2015-2016 year. We also hope all have
had their Installation of Officers. If you are
not sure how to do this, give us a call and
we can get you the information, or you can
get it from the Ladies Auxiliary website.
Installation of Officers is a perfect way to
start a new year, even if you have the same
office. The Installation process reminds
you of your duties and will get you motivated for this next year.
We are also excited to let you all know we have another Auxiliary in
Missouri. Ste. Genevieve Council Ladies Auxiliary #1037 had their first
officers installed July 12, 2015. Welcome Ladies!
Reminders:
The Horseshoe Tournament is Aug 14-16 and we have many Ladies
LADIES AUXILIARY CHAIRPERSON
JOHN & JULIE CLARKE SAYS . . .
participating in this event. Good luck
to you all. We plan to be there Aug
14 to cheer you all on.
Area meetings will be starting in
Sept. Watch for additional info to be
coming your way. We are finalizing
the date and time for both the South-
east and Central MO regions.
Ideas for your auxiliary this Fall:
Host a paddle party as a fundraiser;
sponsor a baby bottle campaign for
Meet Life; host a Mass to honor law
enforcement, firefighters, and emer-
gency personnel; each ask one lady
to join you at a Ladies Auxiliary
meeting or function.

It’s Soccer Time!! At the July

how many DD’s new the mechanics
of a Soccer Challenge. Many did
and that’s wonderful but some didn’t
realize that it is NOT a complicated

to run a Free Throw contest, you can
definitely conduct a Soccer Chal-

the same. That being said, it would
sure be great to see more of our
councils feeling the same way about
the Soccer Challenge as it’s another
great way to support our youth in
your communities. It’s not too late
to schedule and conduct your local
council competition. The council
level is held in September followed
by the District in the first part of
YOUTH ACTIVITIES DIR.
ROCKY GAMBON
October, Regionals are typically at
the end of October and the State
Championship is in early Novem-
ber.
If you haven’t done so, you need
to order a Soccer-Kick kit from Su-
preme (SC-Kit) or if it’s too late
contact our Soccer Chairman Aaron
Wood as he may have some spare
kits on hand. Make sure you contact
the local schools and youth soccer
leagues to help generate interest and
avoid a scheduling conflict with their
games. You might have better atten-
dance if you are able to hold the
competition during one of their prac-
tices as opposed to having them
make a “special” trip after practice
or a game.
Please make sure the score sheet
is completely filled out including
hosting council #, phone number,
address and all signatures required.
Make sure your District Deputy
knows you are hosting a council
competition so that he can schedule
his District competition without
missing or conflicting with your
council schedule. DD’s it is impera-
tive that make contact with all of
your councils when scheduling your
district competition. It is also the
DD’s responsibility to make sure all
of their district winners know when
and where the Regional competi-
tion will be held. The Regional dates,
locations and district assignments
can be found on the mokofc.org
website under the Youth activities.
I’m going to focus each newslet-
ter article on the most current Youth
Activity taking place or having a
submission due date during the cur-
rent month. This doesn’t diminish
the fact that you should still be or-
dering your kits from Supreme for
the other activities. You also need to
contact your schools in order to help
them schedule the essay, poster and
even free-throw contest for the
school year and even make sure you
give the counselor all of the needed
paperwork for the scholarship ap-
plications. Lastly, but certainly not
the least, is recruiting and develop-
ing new circles for the Squires and
Columbus Girls. This is the perfect
time of the year to make sure your
parish and schools know about this
wonderful youth leadership oppor-
tunity.
Finally, if you have a Facebook
account, please like the new Mis-
souri Knights of Columbus State
Youth Page at “MO KofC Youth
Page” to stay on top of news and
information. Thanks for all that you
are doing for our Youth!
