It’s tempting to think of Yitzchak Avi-nu as a bridge between the more exciting and eventful careers of Avraham and Yaakov. In fact, many commentators have observed that Yitzchak spends his life simply repeating the exploits of his father. He experiences infertility that is miraculously cured (Gen 25); a famine
forces him to relocate to another locale where he resorts to a ruse designed to deflect the mal-ice of the local ruler who covets his wife (Gen 26); he digs wells and concludes a treaty with
the antagonists of the previous incident (Gen 26). Even the one event that should rightfully have distinguished Yitzchak from his peers among the Patriarchs – the Akedah – is tradi-tionally discussed in the context of Avraham’s righteousness. And although the subtle contrasts between the narrative iterations of events in Av-raham’s life and Yitzchak’s life are interesting, there is little, from a purely literary standpoint, to recommend the saga of Yitzchak. For person-al and cosmic drama, the critic would be far better off studying the life and times of Av-raham and Yaakov. How, then, is the believing Jew to con-ceptualize Yitzchak’s greatness? In one of his lesser-known fictional novels, The Ball and the Cross, G.K. Chesterton wrote, “It is the one great weakness of journal-ism as a picture of our modern existence, that it must be a picture made up entirely of excep-tions. We announce on flaring posters that a man has fallen off a scaffolding. We do not an-

fallen off a scaffolding.” Indeed, the reading public gobbles up sensationalism, and worships at the altar of momentary heroism. The newspa-per that featured the headline, “Man Quietly Continues to Live His Life in Conformity to the Almighty’s Wishes,” would not long remain in business. Yet, perhaps this is precisely what makes Yitzchak an object of admiration. Yitzchak is the first person born into the Abra-hamic covenant. Given the great expectations attending his birth, and the monumental respon-sibilities imposed upon him merely by virtue of his genetics, it would have been eminently un-derstandable – if tragic – had Yitzchak rebelled against his upbringing. Even short of outright recalcitrance, one would expect at the very least that Yitzchak’s observance would be infused with a lesser passion than his father’s – after all, he hadn’t chosen this life! Instead, Yitzchak diligently and with calm dignity lives up to his father’s lofty stand-ards, retracing Avraham’s steps through the rough, often-lonely desert of faith. His father’s values were always his guiding principles – and in our day, where autonomy of the self is prized above all else, this is an exceedingly rare phe-nomenon indeed. Ultimately, then, Yitzchak’s profound greatness lay in his remarkable capacity to live unremarkably – a quiet life of spiritual growth unsullied by theological melodrama.
