LETHBRIDGE, Alta. _ With winter theo-retically approaching, drivers may want to make sure they have the all-weather capa-bility that Jeep has become legendary for. And next spring, when adventure beckons, they surely will want the off-road capability that has made Jeep a legend. And nothing says ‘capable’ more than the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

When the rede-signed Grand Cherokee was first launched two years ago, I drove the top-shelf Hemi-powered V8 Overland edition. It was a remarkable sport utility vehicle, loaded with every creature comfort imaginable while powered by a 360-horsepower, 5.7-litre V8 engine with five-speed automatic tranmission that deliv-ered fuel economy of 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Its tow-ing capacity was rated at a robust 7,200 lbs.

Not everyone needs or wants V8 power (the V8 is now mated to a six-speed transmission and gets fuel econo-my of 17/28) and not everyone can afford to spend 55 or so grand on a vehicle. But buy-ers who want Jeep performance and off-road capability don’t have to. The Grand Cherokee is available in five models includ-

ing Laredo E and X, Limited, Overland and the SRT8 ,which is powered by a mon-strous 470-hp 6.4-litre HEMI-V8.

The tester is the Laredo X, powered by a 290-horsepower, 3.6-litre Pentastar engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission that delivers fuel econ-omy of 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway while still rated to tow 5,000 lbs.

Priced in the mid-$40,000 range, this would be my choice if I were to buy. It employs Jeep’s tried-and-true Quadra Trac I system which offers full-time, on-demand four-wheel-drive with a 50-50 front to rear torque split.

As buyers move up the Grand Cherokee ladder, they have other systems to choose from, including Quadra Trac II which has a two-speed transfer case with low range and variable torque distri-bution. Quadra Drive II has a rear limited slip differential. Depending upon model, buyers can also get an air sus-pension that adjusts ride height up to four inches.

Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system lets drivers choose among five dif-ferent settings which adjust the SUV’s trac-tion control. But let’s face it, these systems really won’t be needed except in places with heavy snowfall where

remote start and uni-versal garage door opener, dual zone automatic climate con-trol, and a powerful Alpine sound system with nine speakers and a 506-watt ampli-fier. The front seats also have 12-way power adjustability.

The Laredo X also has 18-inch aluminum wheels, tire pressure monitoring system and remote starter. All Grand Cherokees have such stuff as foglamps, automatic headlights, redundant

audio controls on the steering wheel and safety systems includ-ing electronic stability control, hill start assist, traction control, brake assist and rain brake support.

The Grand Cherokee’s interior is designed for long-range comfort. With a tilt/telescoping steer-ing wheel, a com-manding driving posi-tion and an airy cabin, it’s an environment five people will enjoy for hours on end.

Fit and finish in the

unit is superb. Soft-touch surfaces abound and the gauges and controls are all models of simplicity. A nifty driver information centre provides quick access to fuel economy, tire pressure and other stuff drivers need to know. A redundant digital speedometer also is handy.

The rear bench has plenty of leg-room leggy types and enough shoulder room that three big fellas won’t want to fight after a short trip.

While the exact cargo volume isn’t available, I’d say it’s enough to haul plenty of stuff for a carload of people even with the rear seat employed.

What’s really nice about the Grand Cherokee is its size. It’s neither gargantuan nor tiny. It is perfectly sized for city parking lots. With its capability and space, this is truly a grand sport utility vehicle, one which is among the best on the market today.

Decherd, Tenn. – The eMotor that powers the Nissan LEAF has more than one mile of cop-per wiring inside. Currently those motors are assembled in Japan. Soon, however, Nissan’s eMotor will be produced in Decherd, Tenn., about 70 miles away from where Nissan will build the 2013 Nissan LEAF in Smyrna, Tenn.

Adam Reed, Nissan’s glob-ally certified trainer for eMotor production now has spent two, three-month stints at Nissan’s global headquarters in Japan learning how to sculpt these

motors.It starts with winding cop-

per wire to form the motor. The wire then conducts an electro- magnetic field to cre-ate rotational force and pull a vehicle.

“The winding takes place on a very complex piece of equip-ment,” said Reed.

“It has two parts at a time traversing inside the equipment going in different directions. So it’s very hard to keep up with sometimes.”

Reed supports a team in Decherd that is conducting pro-duction trials on the eMotor.

Those motors will go in the 2013 Nissan LEAF, soon to be produced in Smyrna, Tenn.

It does take more time for an electric motor to be assem-bled compared to a gas engine; and, Nissan says it takes about 25 people per shift to ensure an electric motor is made properly.

“It’s very exciting to get it started and knowing that when that first one (Nissan LEAF) comes off the line in Smyrna, we’re going to have our name somewhere on the motor that’s inside,” said Reed.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON – More than 80 of Canada’s leading automotive journalists have concluded four inten-sive days of real-world testing of 180 new 2013 model year vehicles to deter-mine the ‘Best New’ winners in eleven different categories as part of AJAC’s annual Canadian Car of the Year pro-gram.

The journalists are all members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), with the potential to reach every Canadian consumer with their message, in print, audio and video broadcast, web and social media.

The results were compiled by the international accounting firm of KPMG and kept confidential even from AJAC until the announcements.

Before submitting their ballots, the AJAC journalists completed almost 2,000 individual road tests during TestFest, comparing vehicles back to back on the same roads under the same conditions.

These tests were conducted as part of AJAC’S mission to serve consumers by providing them with factual, objec-

tive information beyond just personal opinion.

“Once again, a wide array of Canada’s most experienced and respected automo-tive journalists have wrung out the full slate of new vehicles offered to Canadian consumers”, observed Richard Russell, chair, 2013 Canadian Car of the Year Awards.

“The week-long process results in unbiased and accurate information that equips Canadian consumers with read-ily accessible, objective data that can be used as a reliable resource when shop-ping for a new vehicle. The process and program have evolved over more than two decades and each year becomes more exacting and informative”.

AJAC Car of the Year category winners announced

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Automobile.com has discovered that the sales of compact and subcompact cars are on the rise.

More than 20 percent of the cars sold last month were small models, which is the highest percentage of small car sales since 1993. Even in the first nine months of 2012, the sale of compact and subcom-pact cars have increased by 50 percent from 2011.

While the survey does demonstrate that the popularity of small cars contin-ues to rise, the survey does not deter-mine whether the rising cost of gas is the driving force behind this trend.

However, Automobile.com does highlight which three small models are the most popular. The survey found that the three most popular models this year are the Honda Civic, the Ford Fiesta and

the Chevrolet Cruze. Honda Civic sales have increased by 56 percent from last year, and Chevrolet Cruze sales have increased by 36 percent from last year.

Andrew Evans, an Automobile.com columnist, explains why the survey went beyond simply discovering which cars were the most popular: “Whether consumers are looking to save money on gas or are attracted to the MSRPs, we wanted to get a better understanding of the insurance cost trends to inform readers.”

The Automobile.com survey also compares insurance premiums between this year’s three most popular small cars. The survey found that a Honda Civic costs, on average, $887.63 a year to insure. The Ford Fiesta costs an aver-age of $924.00 a year to insure, while the Chevrolet Cruze was found to be the most expensive to insure, costing

Interest in small cars continues to rise: survey

ST. LOUIS, MO - Car rental customers now have 24/7 access to a virtual travel guide that can steer them to everything from local attractions to vehicle infor-mation, thanks to ONRAMP Concierge -- a new mobile-optimized website launched by Enterprise Holdings.

The company -- which owns and oper-ates the Alamo Rent A Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental brands -- is adding unique Quick Response (QR) codes to nearly 1 million rental vehicles by the end of December to give renters on-the-go access to the www.onramp.ehi.comsite.

Enterprise Holdings is building on the success and innovation of its industry-

first QR code pilot program last year, as recently noted in Bloomberg: “3 QR Codes People Actually Scan.”

The company is now adding QR codes, as part of the ONRAMP Concierge program, to its entire rental fleet in the U.S. and Canada -- the largest fleet in North America.

Car rental customers will use their smartphones to scan the QR codes, located on vehicle windows and key tags, to launch the ONRAMP Concierge site.
