Courage & Compassionthe Legacy of the bielski brothers July 15 – November 4

Beginning on July 15, the Holocaust Memorial Center will bring you the exhibit, Courage & Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski

Brothers. In 1941, the Nazis initiated their campaign against the Jews of Belarus. Brothers Tuvia, Zus and Asael Bielski refused to become victims and committed themselves to rescue and resistance. They escaped to the forest and recruited relatives, friends and complete strangers. The brothers welcomed all who chose to fight back, even if they could not engage in combat. Ultimately 1,200 Jews were saved from certain death. This exhibit begins with life in Belarus, accounts of escape, and the formation of probably the most famous partisan detachment. Through panels, artifacts and interactives, the exhibit shows us the courage and commitment of this intrepid band of rebels. The exhibit will open on July 15 with a presentation by Tuvia Bielski’s granddaughter, Sharon Rennert, and a special tour of the exhibit. educating the Next GenerationYour Generosity at work

Each year, nearly 50,000 students visit the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus. Their

token admission fees do not cover the cost of operating the center. Your gifts are what make their visits possible. Thank you!The geographic diversity of our visitors is astounding! Just since the beginning of March 2012, groups have visited from these Michigan cities, including some you may not even have known existed. A

building a Lasting Legacy As our Holocaust Memorial Center

Zekelman Family Campus touches ever greater numbers of lives, it becomes even more important to assure its future. The value of the museum and its programs is inestimable, but the lights must stay on, the bills must be paid and educational outreach must continue.I know that many of you would like to make a significant gift so that the Center can continue to deliver its critical message to the next generation, but your generosity must be tempered by financial responsibility for yourselves and your families. There are ways to make a significant gift without jeopardizing your ability to meet current and future personal obligations. You needn’t be a millionaire to be a generous donor while meeting your responsibilities to your heirs.Outright bequests You can direct in your will that the Center receive a certain sum, property, stock or percentage of your estate. Providing income for Family Members If your financial responsibilities to family members extend beyond your lifetime, testamentary charitable remainder trusts or gift annuities can provide both a gift to help the Center and a stream of income to your beneficiaries. You can play a major role in the future of Holocaust education in Michigan through your estate plan. The impact of your planned gift will be felt for years to come. A

Dear Holocaust Memorial Center,I want to let you know that Birmingham Covington’s 7th and 8th grade students were so moved by our field trips to the Holocaust Memorial Center. Every tour guide and survivor was incredible with our

students. I can’t imagine that our students

could have had a better complement to our

study of genocides and more specifically the

Holocaust and The Diary of Anne Frank. Thank you for helping us to arrange our field trips and such an incredible experience

for our students.

irrefutable, Mind-Numbing evidence...Photographs from the Concentration Camps

Hitler’s goal to exterminate the Jewish people was his “top secret” plan and it is well known that taking pictures in the concentration camps was strictly

forbidden. Not well known was the existence of administrative offices within the camps called Erkennungsdienst, Identification Services, which took and developed photos, produced films of camp “happenings,” documented medical experiments and arranged special albums for camp commanders. Most of this evidence was purposely destroyed at the end of the war, although some did survive and continue to surface. Camps such as Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Stutthof and Mauthausen all had these types of “services.” Extermination camps did not, as the prisoners were murdered shortly after arrival. The largest collection of concentration camp photos we have today comes from the photos taken by the liberators and soldiers who entered the camps. Our Library Archive has become a repository for hundreds of these photos. We regularly receive photos found in attics, basements, old albums or even walls of homes. Donors feel obligated to share them as contributions to history. Many donors are uncomfortable even having them in their homes. By donating them to our Center, donors do something positive with something so utterly evil.

The most well known among concentration camp photos is the “Signal Corps Photos” taken by groups of U.S. Army cameramen. General Eisenhower was enraged by the horrific scenes he encountered, and he ordered the Signal Corps to take photos. This operation became a model of efficiency with photos made available to the public within 24 hours, a great

accomplishment at the time. He also ordered all civilian news media and military camera units to visit the camps, record their observations in print, pictures and film and to send their reports back home. Soldiers were encouraged to take their own photos. These raw images flooded the cinema newsreels, newspapers and magazines of the day, and had a far greater effect than any anti-Nazi propaganda the Allies could ever produce. This pictorial evidence defies

description. As gruesome and heartbreaking as these photos are, it is our duty to preserve them for posterity. When photos arrive, we carefully enclose them in acid-free sleeves, catalog and store them in a humidity controlled environment. They are used for educational purposes only, such as in our permanent exhibits, for loan to other institutions and for training. This is our mission and we are prepared to accept as many photographs as are brought to us. A

Remembering Rabbi Rosenzveig z”l With summer upon us, the Holocaust Memorial Center

continues to expand its message of hope, remembrance and tolerance to people in all of our surrounding communities.None of this would have been possible without the vision and tireless efforts our founder, Rabbi Charles H. Rosenzveig z’’l. With the help of the Shaarit Haplaytah and others too numerous to mention, Rabbi Rosenzveig made the dream of this institution a reality. He was relentlessly determined and resilient in overcoming the many hurdles he faced, first in opening the doors to the HMC and then nurturing it into an acclaimed institution of remarkable sophistication.

It is in this spirit, and in recognition of the HMC’s roots, that we recently put the final touches on a permanent dedication to Rabbi Rosenzveig on the wall adjacent to the building’s main entrance. Rabbi Rosenzveig inspired many of us to continue his formidable work. It is his legacy that enables the HMC to educate and touch nearly 50,000 middle and high school students annually. These students, often knowing little about the Holocaust prior to their visit, are consistently moved by the docent-led tours which are then culminated by the experiences related in person by our precious survivors.
