Scaffolding Assignments

Scaffolding, cont.

Research papers and projects can present asmonumental tasks to a student without properexperience and educational background. Aseducators, we can aid in the student research inquiryand synthesis processes through the scaffolding ofassignments. Instead of presenting students with the researchpaper guidelines as one large assignment, breakingthe assignment into smaller parts that build uponone another, otherwise known as scaffolding, is amethod in which educators can increaseinformation literacy skills and student engagementwith the material.

The LFCC Library Information LiteracyToolkit provides links and lesson plansthat will aid in the scaffolding of assignments. A research project or paper could bebroken into various stages, to include,topic selection and development activities,source evaluation, annotatedbibliographies, draft papers, peer reviewexercises and final drafts. Each stageallows the educator an opportunity toassess student learning and furtherenforce the concepts of informationliteracy. Additionally, by implementingthe scaffold approach, one may be moreeffectively able to match assignmentoutcomes with the QEP goals and studentlearning outcomes. Scaffolding can enhance students' abilities to find,understand, evaluate, apply, integrate,create, and share informationappropriately and effectively. For further information on scaffolding,visit the IL toolkit or reach out to alibrarian. The librarians can also helpreview and discuss an assignment that youare developing for a class.
