By Christy ParkerA three week old grey seal is recuperating in Kerry after being res-cued on a Youghal beach last week. Mary Mangan, fromKnockaverry was alerted to the creature by her terrier Doc whilewalking between Redbarn and Pilmore. Mary contacted theYoughal Coastguard who quickly responded in the persons of offi-cer-in-charge Michael Lee and crew members Pat McCarthy,Fiona Watson, Janette Hickey, Tony Kelly and Kieran Kavanagh. The coastguard crew threw a blanket over the disgruntled younglady’s head (the seal’s that is!) before bundling her into a fish box.Acquiring advice on what to do next proved problematic until theMarine Rescue Co-ordinating Service in Dublin advised them tocontact the Dingle Seal Rescue Sanctuary, who promptly dis-patched two young ladies of their own to retrieve the seal. AdorableMeanwhile the pup was brought to the South Abbey Coastguardstation. Cloaked in nature’s protective white fur, she quicklysparked the kind of adoring welcome for which any governmentminister would gladly eat a crate of raw fish nowadays. Localsdropped by and children from nearby BunScoil Mhuire filed ador-ingly past the fish box as if some X-Factor starlet was in residence.Occasionally an unworthy adult would touch the sleek fur, instant-ly bringing snappy defiance as the grumpy guest tried to removetheir fingers. The star from the sea passed some hours of quiet repose in thelocked station before being re-roused to the capable, cheerful pres-ence of Sarah Martin and Kate Hall from the Dingle sanctuary.Amidst her first experience of electric bulbs, she was floppedingloriously onto a blanket before receiving some rehydratingmedicine. She was christened Sammy by a visiting young boy andfound to weigh a healthy 25 kgs (60lbs) before being carted off ina comfortable crate to Kerry. Kerry careSammy’s arrival will please another seal in the sanctuary who, prior to Sammy’s encounter with Mary Mangan’s dog, was theonly Corkonian amongst a sanctuary of seven Kerry pups, most ofthem washed up, so to speak, from the Blaskets. As the worldknows, two Cork girls simultaneously gathered usually amounts toa takeover. The rescued pup is now quartered in a personal kennel equippedwith such mod cons as blankets and heat lamps.. "She’s on a fishsoup diet for a few weeks until ready for raw fish," says Sarah."She’ll be put in a bath to learn to swim and later into a big pool.Once she weighs about 45 kg, in a month or so, we’ll release herback in Youghal."According to Sarah and Kate, seals of Sammy’s age cannot yetswim and she may have been abandoned or simply washed ashorein a storm. Seal mothers stop feeding their offspring at about threeweeks, shortly before they shed their white fur. By then they haveample body fat to survive a few weeks, before learning to swimand fend for themselves. On a public beach this process could becurtailed by predators. Sammy was lucky the Doc, (himself oncean abandoned pup) got there first. See www.dinglesanctuary.com.

BABY SEAL RESCUED IN YOUGHAL

What is Bareroot? The word bareroot often confuses people as to its meaning ? Toclarify, bare root is a form of selling a hedge, plant or tree withouta pot surrounding the plants root system or just with its bareroot.Often this reduces the cost of the plant. Bareroot plants and hedging can only be bought from Novemberto March .This Winter time frame is when the plants roots are dor-mant so the root system does not dry up.Often Overlooked but Great Bareroot Hedges-Most of us know the popular and reliable bareroot hedges com-mon in the Irish garden scene. The formality of laurel , griselinia, green & purple leafed beech are all worthy of their place on thehedging pantheon .However ,an absolute corker and often overlooked hedge isCarpinus betulus or the common Hornbeam. It looks remarkably like beech, but is much easier to grow andcomes back into leaf far earlier than its look-alike. Hornbeam is atough lady and can grow in most soil types including damp heavysoil.Another little known and grown fantastic coastal hedge is a plantcalled Eleagnus ebbengii. This is a fast growing hedging plantwith fantastic glossy grey green leathery leaves, which can with-stand extreme wind & salt .Although not normally sold bare rootit can be sourced in pots and is well worth buying.Vibrant Bareroot BoxFor anyone who is trying to edge paths , herb beds , herbaceousborders or build their very own parterre or knot garden who canresist Buxus Box hedging.Although normally quiet expensive you can now buy vibrant boxplants bare root at Greenbarn and at fraction of the price they arein pots. How to plant:Prepare a loose soil bed for the plants by digging a narrowtrench(1ft) by the required hedgerow length. Allow for 2-3 plantsper metre.Add some farmyard manure to the bottom of the trench. This willgive the plants a great head start when they begin to grow nextspring especially beech plants which like rich soil.Remember you can now buy farmyard manure in bags from thegarden centreNext cover the manure with a few inches of loose soil and yourready for planting.Soak the roots in a bucket of water then plant , making sure all theroots are well covered. You can topdress the hedge with a compostor mulch.Next spring when the plants begin to grow they will need to bewatered for the first month or two until the bareroots establish &flourish .Put on the wellies & get planting !! Next week we talk Bare root trees.

Its hedging time-Bare root hedginghas arrived at Greenbarn

Bright ideas for clueless Christmas shoppers

YOU'VE left it late, very late - and you've still not got all yourChristmas presents. And you simply haven't a Scooby Doo what toget the family's resident sports nut. Well, worry yourself not, forbelow are some last-minute sporty gift ideas for the hard of think-ing that should make a mockery of the old aphorism that moneycan't buy you love.

1. Give it some juicePerhaps the gift you're looking is for a person who is not particu-larly sporty. You can still buy them into the health kick though bygiving them a juicer. These things vary greatly in price and func-tion, but all the recipient then has to do is add fruit and or vegeta-bles and they can stave off ill-health with multi-vitamin drinks theyear round. And it'll make you feel good just wrapping it up.

2. eBay away!Searching for that classic 1970s Gareth Edwards Wales strip?Desperately need a spike from Steve Ovett's Moscow runningshoe? Fancy bidding for Muhammad Ali's boxer shorts? Well thenthis online auction is the place for you: www.ebay.ie

3. Get on your bikeTraffic jams, train delays, and anger. Lots of raw, vicious, unrelent-ing anger. Sound familiar? Well, there is an alternative to yourstress-levels receiving their daily health-wrecking top-up on thejourney to work: the humble bike.

4. Book itA book is always a safe bet when all else fails. And this lot are allunder €25. Books are available in all good books shops.Perhaps the best sports book of the year is Bill Borrow's unofficialbiography of snooker loopy Alex Higgins: The Hurricane. It’s athoroughly entertaining story of how a flawed genius squanderedmillions and recently ended up in a hostel for the homeless. Andwithout most of his teeth.

It's also been a year for ghost-written 'autobiographies', withNiall Quinn's effort, Niall Quinn: The Autobiography and that ofhis Irish team-mate Roy Keane, entitled Keane, among the best. Atleast Mike Atherton bothered to pen his own: Opening Up.

5. Gym riddle'Tis the season to be jolly, we're told, which is a convenient euphe-mism for eating and drinking ourselves into oblivion until we stepinto the annual confessional of New Year's resolutions and decidewe need to do some exercise. The massive swell in our waistlinesthus sees a massive swell in gym memberships. Why not beat theJanuary scales by signing your loved one up for membership of ahealth club?6. Spa humbug!Christmas is a stressful time of year. All the family in one housearguing over what rubbish to watch on the telly. All that food toserve up, and then serve up again and again. People go to work inthe New Year for a rest. But wouldn't it be so much better to havelife's stresses and strains rubbed off at a deluxe spa hotel? Ofcourse it would. Nothing takes the strain but your credit card.

7. Toy racerAt barely the size of a matchbox, the Mini Racer is the smallestradio-controlled car in the world, so you can set up a grand prixtrack in your office. And that, ladies and gentleman, is sport. Ifnothing else, it'll make the beneficiary feel like a giant.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DONT’S:1. Avoid weekendsIf you want to avoid bumping shoulders with every other shopperthen go shopping on a weekday – preferably in the morning.Salespeople are a lot friendlier when they don’t have a crowd tohandle.

2. Don’t limit your choiceSo you’ve made a list of items to be bought, but you can’t find oneor two. What do you do? Plan for this in advance by writing a backup gift option on your list. This will save you a lot of time espe-cially if you’re shopping for a large number of people.

3. Don’t lose receiptsSave all the receipts from your Christmas shopping expedition. You may need it later, when your gift turns out to be faulty or hasa missing part. Your gift recipient will be glad you can get areplacement.

4. Don’t wrap right awayCheck your item thoroughly before you thrown on the fancy wrap-ping paper. Also remember to remove the price tag and other pur-chase particulars.

5. Don’t waitChristmas shopping doesn’t need to be restricted to December.Shop when something catches your fancy. You can store it awayfor Christmas day!

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWNStay Safe in the

Kitchen this ChristmasARE you sure you know how to prepare your turkey thisChristmas? The Food Standards Agency says many of usdon't and poor preparation and cooking can lead to food poi-soning.

December is the worst month of the year for food poison-ing. One in five of all cases can be traced back to under-cooked poultry such as chicken or turkey. So here are someof the things the FSA wants to warn against: - Don't cook the stuffing inside the turkey. This can preventeither from cooking through properly, so they should becooked separately instead. - Do not wash the turkey before cooking: this can spreadbacteria around the kitchen and lead to cross-contamination.Correct cooking will kill all bacteria. - Ideally a frozen turkey should be defrosted in the fridge. Two thirds of people defrost at room temperature but againthis can cause problems. - Cook your turkey for 18 to 20 minutes per pound inweight. An undercooked turkey can result in food poisining.

Christmas dinner is the biggest meal many of us will cook. We're often preparing meals that we wouldn't normallymake - and we frequently buy more food than we can storein the fridge.

The FSA’s head of microbiology says, "The ad campaignencourages people to think about how to prepare, cook andeat safely, most food poisoning incidents are easily avoidedand with a little bit of extra thought everybody can enjoy thefestive season."

One of the problems is catering for higher numbers, theaverage Christmas cook will be serving dinner for at leastseven people. And we all seem to be guilty of buying a big-ger turkey than necessary, the average weight of theChristmas bird is 12 pounds and that's enough to feed up to18 people, but however big it is, you should use up all left-overs within 48 hours.

But the agency's advice is simple: plan a realistic amountof food, store raw meat in the bottom of your fridge, washutensils used on raw meat and make sure the bird is fullythawed and cooked thoroughly to ensure you stay healthythis Christmas.

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MEETING NOVEMBER 2010By Christy Parker

Report of the Town Clerk on Matters Arising from the MonthlyMeeting of Youghal Town Council held on 12th Oct 2010.Youghal Eco Boardwalk:Failte Ireland have approved a grant of €137,513 towards the deliv-ery of the Youghal Eco Boardwalk which represents Phase 1 of thedevelopment of a coastal walking route. It will see the constructionof a 395m walk along the sea front in front of the Claycastle dune. The existing route is already popular among recreational walkersand tourists visiting the Town. At present much of the walk is on thesand beach itself, which represents problems for users and limits thewindow of use. It is envisaged that this Project will in time formpart of a larger walk which will stretch from Youghal Town Centreto Redbarn, Youghal a total distance of 1,926m. This will providean important tourism function going forward linking a number ofkey tourism assets together such as The Quality Hotel and HolidayVillage, Beach Area, Swimming Pool and Leisure Complex, PerksAmusement Centre and the Town Centre. The Council's intention isthat, on the entire completion, this route will form part of theNational Coastal Walking Route. Youghal Railway Station: I met with Mr. A.J. Cronin of IarnroidEireann on Wednesday 30th October last to discuss solutions to anumber of issues relating to the Youghal Site. Mr. Cronin hasagreed on behalf of Iarnroid Eireann to undertake the following:- A complete clean up of the site removing litter, overgrown vege-tation etc. over the winter period. - Remedial action to repair and replace the missing wooden fenceadjacent to the public car park will be attended to without delay.(Temporary interim measure). - Replace the existing boundary wooden fence with a new palisadefence. The steps to securing necessary funding and completing theprocurement process has begun and is expected to take approxi-mately four months. - Repair the former signal cabin roof and make secure its boundarywith palisade fencing..The meeting was preceded by a presentation from Ned Brennan, chairman of Youghal Tidy Towns Committee. Mr Brennan thankedthe town council for its ongoing support and averred to the commit-tee’s achievements over the past year and its aspirations and plansfor the future. See elsewhere in this issue for a synopsis of hisreport.Cllr Barbara Murray made some critical observations regarding theexecutive of Cork County Council’s contribution towards certainaspects of town tidiness, aka approach roads, grass cutting, etc. Sheasked how the county council could in its wisdom deploy two extraworkers to the landfill at a time when its tonnage was at an all-timelow, while the entrances to the town were dilapidating through lackof manpower. Having listened attentively, Town Manager PatriciaPower said she would sit in on a meeting to be arranged early nextspring between Youghal Tidy Towns committee and the CorkCounty Council’s area office, whereby specific requirements of thecommittee could be aired. The town manager believed that the county council was makingsteady progress in resolving the problem of derelict sites, althoughthe seemingly imminent liquidation of the proprietors of the formerMurray’s Kitchen site posed a difficult challenge regarding that par-ticular eyesore.Votes of Congratulations Cllr Sandra McLellan congratulated PaO’Shea on winning a silver medal at the World Military BoxingChampionships recently. She asked that he be included in the coun-cils’ bi-annual awards night ceremony. Cllr Murray paid tribute to playwright and theatre director SeanO’Neill and the Youghal Theatre Company for the highly success-ful production of Playboy of the Western World at the WalterRaleigh Hotel. “It was absolutely superb, the set was fantastic andit was extremely well attended, “she observed. Cllr Murray alsocongratulated the town clerk and the staff of the town and countycouncils on the operation of a Youghal flood plan. Initiated througha local group in Catherine Street, the plan was given its first outingduring a recent storm warning that ultimately failed to live up to itsbilling. “It was something of a dry run,” noted Cllr Murray with

unintended irony, “but it worked very well. The lines of communi-cation were excellent, text messages went out as planned and every-one knew what was happening regarding sandbags and other mat-ters.”Mayor Mary Linehan Foley offered belated congratulations to theTeam Youghal cyclists on their successful ‘Race Around Ireland’fund raising on behalf of the Emer Casey Fund last September. Shesaid a larger exploit involving an American excursion was in thepipeline. The mayor also congratulated artist Pauline Neville for herrecent, successful exhibition in the Mall Arts Centre. She extendedplaudits to Michael Hackett on the launch of his book ‘Sars,’ addingthat he was keeping the history of Youghal alive for many people, especially younger generations, who would otherwise be unawareof the rich content. The mayor also echoed Cllr Murray’s senti-ments regarding council staff and the storm plan. Town Foreman’s report Cllr Liam Burke said light no. 133 atNorth Main Street was out. He asked if the engineer had seen theroad markings at the junction of Seafield Road and Kilcoran Road, where great danger persisted. The councillor said the path leadingto Ardan na Mara was very slippery due to algae and finished byasking whether the diving rocks report was yet available, to whichthere was no response. Cllr Eoin Coyne drew attention to illegal dumping on the Jail Steps, noting it was not the first time it had been mentioned in the cham-ber. He asked if the mobile CCTV was back in town, to which thetown clerk said he wasn’t going to comment as it could impededetections. The councillor also repeated a request from Septemberthat a tree at the graveyard be trimmed. Cllr Sammy Revins said the newly surfaced road at Raheen Parkhad “gone green” and slippery with moss and was particularly dan-gerous for elderly people.Rats Cllr McLellan described illegal dumping at the Jail Steps as“really serious,” and claimed “hundreds and hundreds” of rubbishbags had been dumped illegally over a lengthy period. She said ratinfestation was now prevalent, and three rodents had been seensimultaneously on the steps recently. “You shouldn’t see that on atourist walkway,” she pleaded. Cllr Murray asked if the bin at the greyhound track –which hadbeen burned out- was to be replaced. She drew attention to a ‘dan-gerous bend’ sign at the tennis court that was green and badly need-ed washing and also warned that the wind had turned a number ofsigns to face the wrong way, including one at Nealon’s Quay.Cllr Michael Beecher suggested a CCTV camera be placed perma-nently at the Jail Steps to counter illegal dumping. He asked thatgraffiti be cleared from a number of buildings and said dog foulingwas a persistent problem, especially at weekends when thelitter/dog warden was off duty. He requested that the owners of aproperty be asked in writing to remove ivy that was intruding intothe adjacent graveyard. Cllr Michelle Hennessy said “Fr. O’Neill is completely green” inreference to a statue in the ’98 Memorial Park, (appropriatelyknown as Green Park.) Other statues were in a similar state at thelocation, while bars in the bandstand needed replacing. The coun-cillor said the new car park byelaws had been implemented sinceNovember 1st but people remained unaware of them. She was toldthat the relevant signage had to be erected before they could beimplemented.Mayor Linehan Foley repeated that the ‘dangerous bend’ sign need-ed cleaning and a sign at Tides/McCurtainstown was facing thewrong way. Town engineer Paul Murray’s report arising from October’smeeting Town engineer Paul Murray said road repairs had takenplace at Ballyclamsey, the road liners were due in town and wouldaddress the problem at Seafield Rd. A contractor had been appoint-ed to complete footpath works at the intersection of New CatherineStreet and Grattan Street. Approximately 1,000 sandbags had beenprovided to the public prior to the previous weekend’s flood alert, with county council staff working late Friday and early Saturdaymorning. Bags were delivered when elderly people rang requestingthem. He said Cork County Council wished to point out that thepropriety flood barrier, which is placed across a doorway, is the best

Page 18: nov2510

that the propriety flood barrier, which is placed across a doorway, isthe best option. The Youghal water reservoir is currently beingcleaned out, using underwater robotic cleaning system, he proceed-ed, while work was ongoing at replacing filter sand at Boola water-works. The road contractor was expected to fix a hole at RaheenRoad. Mr. Murray then said that it may have appeared fromOctober’s meeting that access to private land at the front strand wasproblematic. “We have set up a communication system with thelandowner to gain access to the main sewer when required and thisis working satisfactorily,” explained. County Council Items: Cllr Revins said “lethal” potholes nearCopperally needed filling, while “a mighty crater” was evident atSummerdale Lawn. Cllr McLellan asked that the town engineer“touch base” with councillors when the road liners come to town asthey each had their own issues. Mr Murray advised submitting awritten list to him. Bins, dogs and waterCllr Murray asked that a ‘stop’ or ‘yield’ sign be erected temporari-ly at the Seafield junction until the road liners arrived. She had metsomeone who had very narrowly avoided an accident and it wouldbe “a fright to God” if one occurred in the interim. The engineeragreed to install a few bollards. Cllr Murray advocated removing thebins at Claycastle car park (due to misuse and abuse) and wanted thepoop bins emptied twice weekly on behalf of dog owners. She won-dered if Cork County Council might employ the same CCTV oper-ator as was serving the town council and was informed it was beingconsidered. Cllr Murray said the heather at the Bretton Road round-about needed trimming before asking if anything could be done toalleviate ponding near Claycastle caravan park. “There is no foot-path and people have to go on the road but with excessive rainfallthe water meets in the middle. I know it’s a difficult problem, withthe levels and the drains filling up quickly on either side,” sheexplained.Cllr Beecher said a low grate at Cock and Bull fills with leaves etc, causing flooding in heavy rain and he sought a better system. Theengineer said it was on his list. In a humorous aside, the mayorasked whether the address Cock and Bull was named after CllrBeecher, prompting Cllr Revins to inquire as to which one he repre-sented. When the laughter had subsided and Cllr Beecher’s com-plexion had returned to normal, the councillor proceeded with hispolitical objectives, insisting that he wanted “action not justanswers” in regard to the ongoing foul odours emanating from thelandfill vicinity.Cllr Hennessy asked when the footpath at Raheen Road would becompleted. The town clerk said it would have to be re-tendered asthe contractor was emigrating. The councillor requested a solutionto severe ponding at the entrance to Springfield Court.Outfall pipe debacle Cllr Burke had a notion that the new valverecently installed at the front strand outfall pipe was proving inade-quate as he had seen a JCB working there to remove blockage. Hewas correct. The town engineer revealed he was meeting a seniorcolleague from Cork County Council that very afternoon to discussthe issue. Cue a mini-debate in which the lengthy saga of Cork CountyCouncil’s struggles with various valves and stop-gap measuresacross several years. “How much is it costing?” asked Cllr Beecherin vain. “There was supposed to be a report on that,” reminded CllrMurray, without response. “Surely the time has come for CountyHall to admit that the only solution, as recommended some time ago,is to extend the outfall,” demanded Cllr Burke. Mr. Murray conced-ed that the county council senior executive engineer was now of thesame opinion.Town Manager Patricia Power said the county council had been try-ing to having to apply for a foreshore licence and that the mostrecent failed valve initiative had worked in many other situations.Extension would now be seriously considered. Cllr Murray won-dered if the extension was not part of the plan for the town’s maindrainage scheme and she also advised that the council workers onthe ground who knew and dealt with the issue be consulted. Thetown engineer said this was normal practice.Groyns Cllr Murray then cited concerns that the extension wouldprevent the surplus water from being fully emitted due to its prox-

imity to incoming tides. Furthermore, a lack of adequate groyneswas causing a strong movement of sands and one or two groyneswould have to be installed to prevent this. The council said it wouldawait a report from the engineer at December’s meeting. “Thesestop gap solutions are a huge waste of public money,” concludedCllr Burke accurately, in what might be termed parting kick in thegroyne to Cork County Council. Cllr Coyne wondered if it was pointless to ask whither the brokenfootpaths at Dr Kennedy’s Place, given that Cllr Burke had beenraising the issue since he (Cllr Coyne) was a schoolboy (which wasnot too long ago in fairness). He had seen an elderly person trip thererecently. “It will be included in a survey he is conducting,” CllrMcLellan interceded. Mayor Linehan Foley warned that some of thegroynes in the strand were sharp “like teeth and deadly dangerous”and she asked that the engineer have a look at them. Mayor’s Business The mayor said she was going to be away for aweek and would delegate her duties to her deputy Cllr Eoin Coyne. She also referred to a ‘Race Across America’ project being plannedfor next summer by Team Youghal cyclists on behalf of the EmerCasey Foundation. Further and detailed information was containedin brochure distributed to the members. The mayor said the group’sincreasing profile was “putting Youghal on the map” and urged thecouncil to offer whatever financial or other support that could beapportioned. There was general consensus that what could be donein testing times would be done. “Some of them are not spring chick-ens and this is a stamina test so fair play to them,” observed themayor admiringly. Heritage Island Marketing and Promotional Plan 2011 TownClerk Liam Ryan explained that Youghal’s membership of HeritageIsland meant the town would be promoted through the followingchannels: Inclusion in Ireland Visitor Attractions Guide, inclusion inthe Group Organisers Manual, promotion via web and email strate-gy, inclusion in Heritage Island online booking engine, promotion at20 tourism and lifestyle shows, Heritage Island iPhone app &mobile marketing, inclusion in Heritage Island Social & Mediachannels and party to Heritage Island’s tourism partners, seminars, media and familiarisation trips. In a secondary report, Mr. Ryan revealed that two grant applicationshad been made to the Heritage Council for (a) St. Mary’s CollegiateChurch Graveyard Trail –Final Phase and (b) Conservation andManagement Plan for St. Mary’s Graveyard, Youghal: Cork County Council Draft Beach Bye laws for PublicConsultation The town clerk explained that this document erro-neously includes Youghal’s front strand in its jurisdiction whereasYoughal Town Council has its own beach bye-law legislation. Thenew laws will be applicable to Claycastle, Redbarn and Pilmorehowever. Submissions are being accepted up to December 10th nextat the Secretary of the Coastal Management Committee at CorkCounty Council. Cork County Council -Corporate Plan 2010-2014 Of note in ref-erence to this item is the inclusion of the government’s impendingwhite paper to abolish town councils. Cllr Revins said that such amove would be challenged on the ground being anti-EU policy. “Itflies in the face of democracy,” observed the town clerk. “As aFianna Fail councillor I think it’s time this government stepped backand let someone else run the country. It’s a disgrace what they aredoing and I’m sick of them,” commented Cllr Revins unexpectedly. Notice of Proposed Amendments to the Draft Waterford CountyDevelopment Plan 2011-2017 Copies of this document are avail-able at Youghal Town Council’s offices. Draft Anti-Social Behaviour Strategy There was widespread wel-come for the county council produced document, which focusesstrongly on anti-social behaviour in accordance with Section 35 ofthe Housing Act 2009. Cllr McLellan said it was badly needed andhelped define whether an issue was a council or a Garda matter, etc.She said it was “good that all complaints will be investigated.” Themayor stressed that people should be aware that complaints or con-cerns put in writing are regarded and treated confidentially by therecipients. The town clerk advised that while the policy is very wel-come, the reality was that the number working hours available to thecouncil on any given week a year ago had been reduced by 28%from 315 to 231. Consequently, issues would be investigated as ‘pri-ority’ or ‘non-priority’ complaints. Commencement of Taking in Charge Procedure for Gort

Inch Rovers Meet Carnacon of MayoIn Tesco All Ireland Ladies Football

Senior Club Championship FinalSunday Next at Bannagher - 2pm

John Cashman Looks Ahead

All associated with Inch Rovers Ladies Football Club will be dear-ly hoping that old clichés come to fruition next weekend. It's oftensaid a team has to lose a final before winning one and in the caseof Inch if they succeed it will be third time lucky, having lost inboth 2007 and 2008 to their immediate opponents Mayo champi-ons Carnacon.Already 2010 has been a year of redemption for the Inch ladies.Twelve months ago they lost their hold on the county champi-onship when old adversaries Donoughmore rediscovered the win-ning formula and recorded an impressive win over the East Corkside, In a recent past that sparkles with silverware, that set backwas a defining day. Would and could Inch rediscover the magicformula? Would those who had been there for some time both onand off the field have the appetite for another major onslaught?Legendary team boos Noel O'Connor traces back to a Februarymeeting when the cards were put on the table and everybody wasre-energised for another tilt at the championship. What transpiredsince has been a successful story all the way and now onlyCarnacon, - yes only Carnacon stand in the way of Inch Roversand their greatest ever day.But first things first and back to the start of the season NoelO'Connor picks up the story."When we decided where we were going, the motivation was hugebecause of last year's defeat. A lot of girls felt they had let them-selves down last year in the final and they wanted to banish thosememories."At the beginning of the season it was very difficult to build upany momentum as many of our players are involved in camogiewith Killeagh and Imokilly, some were also playing football withCork and some were involved in college. We tried to work togeth-er as much as possible and work out what was best for the players. At times some of them were under real pressure having to play acouple of very important games within 24 hours of each other. Inrecent weeks with Killeagh winning the camogie and Imokilly get-ting to the senior final there has been a great buzz overall about theplace", said Noel.Reflecting on the county championship winning campaign forInch Rovers, Noel feels that his side were made work very hardagainst Mourneabbbey despite the opposition being short a fewplayers.

"We have a bunch of young players coming through now who arevery determined to work really hard for one another. We hadanother another hard match against Liscarroll but came out at theright end. The hunger and the hurt from the year was a big factorin our eventual final win against Donoughmore".The Munster championship which followed was to produce twovery different performances. In the drawn match againstBallymacarbery it was a strangely subdued Inch performance asmany of the side looked a bit leaden footed. However, the replaywas to provide a huge contrast."There was a sombre feeling after the drawn match", admits Noel."We asked ourselves was this it, were we coming to the end of theroad? It was difficult for many of the girls who played withKilleagh just the week before in the camogie final to readjustquickly. We opted for an easy week before the rematch withBallymacarbery and tried to factor in as much rest as possible. Webattled on and then went on to win the replay in Dungarvan".As winter approached an away game at the other end of the coun-try would hardly be classed as a prize gig for the Munster winners. An away match in Donegal is about as difficult as it comes at thistime of year for a team from the south."Our luck with home matches on the previous years and homedraws had run out. It took a massive effort form everybody withTom Goggin and Agnes Fitzgerald doing wonderful work inorganising the trip. We travelled up the day before and preparedproperly. As expected it was a huge battle and a demanding matchphysically, but luckily we came out on the right side and Carnaconawait again"

Noel knows what is in store and respects their quality."There are an outstanding team. It is very unusual to meet thesame team for a third time in an All Ireland final. Talk of deserv-ing to get the break is not relevant. We now we get what wedeserve. It's an extra challenge for us because we have new play-ers coming in and obviously the younger generation from a fewyears back are now a bit older. But we are playing Carnacon,Cora Staunton one of the greatest players ever in the game, andother players that can break your heart. But that's the challengethat awaits. We hope lessons have been learned from before andthe fact we have changed our team quite a lot unlike Carnaconmight be a factor".Sunday's final venue - Bannagher county Offaly is hardly a mar-quee sporting stop, but it has developed into a big favourite withthe fixtures secretary. Noel O'Connor has major reservationsabout it."We went there before and obviously and lost, but that's not themajor point. It's off the beaten track in terms of a location, butcrucially there is a distinct slope on the pitch. I've been there withthe inter county team and seen two Cork players get very seriousinjuries - is there a factor with the slope? - one would have to askseriously. When we said we are going to Bannagher, a lot of peo-ple said - not that place again.

"That said there is great buzz about the match - a lot of support isevident around the area. We have been around to the schools andthere is a great awareness of the match. We expect to have a big fol-lowing on the day", Noel said.To win would be everything - the icing on the cake for Noel andthe girls themselves, who include an incredible player, Noel's sis-ter Mary a camogie of gaelic footballer who has been at the high-est level for so long - one of the greatest female sports stars in theland. There is no shortage of admiration."She is unbelievable - I just don't know how she does it. Everyweek she keeps going playing both games at the highest level. There are very few players male or female who could keep goingat that rate, without a complaint. She has a great love of both andthe way she looks after her self through out the course entire sea-son is one of the reasons that all players respect her so much" con-cluded Noel.Noel has played an unrivalled role in the sport of gaelic footballover a long number of years, his commitment to the Inch team hasbeen remarkable. A win would carve an indelible memory in a cat-alogue of magic moments. Like any team boss and unlike previ-ous years, he will hope that somewhere along the line Inch will getthat lucky break to propel them on their way. They have class and quality plenty on the field. Amy O'Shea isback in full training and her return to fitness has been a massiveboost. In Angela Walshe and Mary O'Connor this side have two ofthe finest footballers in the land, whilst the emerging talents ofsuch players as Jessica O'Shea could prove to be a major factor.Throw in is at 2pm in Bannagher on Sunday next. It will be anearly start for all involved but a club which began in humble sur-rounds with such characters as Willie O'Neill pointing the waymight be about to achieve their cherished goal in the unlikely sur-rounds of a county Offaly town. It may not be Croke Park orParnell Park but nobody from East Cork will care if Inch can final-ly make the break through their efforts deserve.Best of luck to all concerned!

A Brief Semi Final Review

Cora Staunton scored 1-14 as Carnacon enjoyed a 2-16 to 2-6victory away to Timahoe of Laois. The Mayo champions, All-Ireland winners in 2007 and '08were always in control of this game and led by 0-11 to 1-2 athalf-time, with Mary Casey scoring Timahoe's goal. WithStaunton and Martha Carter getting goals for Carnacon the out-come was decided long before the end, though the home sidedid pull a goal back late on through Maggie Murphy.Inch Rovers, defeated by Carnacon in both of those previous

deciders, also won despite having to make the journey toTermon of Donegal. Inch led by 0-9 to 1-3 after playing withthe wind in the first half, Mary O'Connor scoring the bulk oftheir points, though Roisin Friel's penalty ensured that Termonwere still in contention.

A Sarah Harrington goal for Inch gave them a six-point leadearly in the second half and though Termon, aided by a goalfrom Geraldine McLoughlin, did cut that gap to two, a late JillHoran green flag eased any nerves Inch had as they won by 2-12 to 2-9.

CD RESTORES MEMORIES OF THE VOICE OF YOUGHALBy Christy Parker

It's noticeable that the current recession is so disheartening thatmany people deem the decade of prosperity that produced it as'guilty by association' and yearn more for the 'normal' stagnationof the 1980's. Nostalgia is selective and many recall that prior tothe roar of the Selfish Tiger, sweeter voices rent the air. Some ofthose voices entered the Voice of Youghal.Last Sunday night, at Youghal GAA's Club Aras, such voicesagain resounded in a special event commemorating the timeswhen the Voice of Youghal joyfully filled the town's hearts andpubs. The night revolved round the launch of Memories of theVoice of Youghal, a CD collection compiled by Youghal musicianMark Ansbro who, as a teenager, played backing to some of thefeatured performers. Vintage entertainmentThe Voice of Youghal was established in 1981 by CommunityRadio Youghal (CRY), which had began broadcasting as a piratestation two years previously. It ran consecutively until 1983 andevery second year thereafter until 1997. A vintage home brew inbar entertainment, it spilt into hostelries as far east as Dungarvanand west towards Midleton. The night's recordings were airedtwice weekly on CRY. Making comparison in concept between the Voice of Youghal andX-Factor is unavoidable. "They are identical in the nature of thedebates they engineer," agrees Mark. However the Youghal ver-sion was original and focused entirely on the singers, with adjudi-cators that were neither pretentious nor self-promoting. Youghal'spioneering project didn't have a pot of gold budget either but wasably and reliably sponsored throughout by Youghal auctioneerCon Keogh. Amongst other donations, he provided "proper tro-phies, about 4' high, to the winners," remembers Mark. Each season started in February, culminated in a September finaleand averaged 84 singers per year @ six per host pub. The songswere inevitably popular pop tunes or classic ballads, sang by soloperformers. It became so popular that patrons started drinking at 8pm! On Monday nights!! An estimated 700 people attended -ortried to attend- one early final in the Ocean Lounge. Some, marooned nearer the car park than the counter, were obliged toferry refreshment from a nearby bar. NoocheThe Voice of Youghal developed from Pa and Nooche on Tour, anoutside broadcast initiative that saw Pa Cooney and William'Nooche' Kenefick invade bars to provide a radio platform forlocal talent. Nooche, a man blessed with the gift of seeing funwithout losing sight of sincerity, became the Voice of the Voice ofYoughal. It made local legends of them both. Nooche attributesthe shows' success, originally at least, to the novelty and the wideexpression of community radio. "People were a bit hesitant thefirst season but after that they were queuing up," he recalls."Everyone loved to hear their family, friends or themselves onradio."CharityThe competitive edge added to the allure but it is widely under-stood that the contests were far more about competing than con-quering. "Without doubt, everyone was a winner," Nooche stress-es, "because it brought out the best in everyone. There was neverbitterness or begrudgery." The benevolence was extensive, as thecompetition focused strongly on raising funds for local charitiesand -through Youghal nun Sr. Rosa Cashman, foreign missions. It all ended in 1997 through 'repetitive strain' and the inexorablemarch of time and change. It left in its wake a trail of tales forgedby a compendium of characters. Nooche rubs his jaw and smiles;"One night there was a power cut in the Half Way bar and theybrought a tractor to a back door to light up the stage, but the restof the bar was in pitch darkness. Brendan Morrison said he never'sold' so many pint bottles but got no money for them!" On anoth-er occasion the three adjudicators were advised not to award onecontestant a place in the next round, no matter how well he sang,

as he was barred from every other pub in the region and would beunable to meet his commitments. It is known too that one per-former had to be subtly but physically supported while singing, having celebrated too much in advance. CD launchSome of the participants have gone from this world now -alongwith several of the pubs they enlivened- but there were at least adozen of them in Club Aras on Sunday night. From a list drawnfrom Nooche's memory bank, Mark had invited a dozen singers tohis home, where they each recorded "one of the songs that madethem famous.' He added two vintage tracks from the competition'sfirst winner, Kathleen Twomey and from the last winner, the lateSean O'Neill. Tracks paying tribute to Nooche, Con Keogh and ahumorous, bonus number titled fictitiously, 'The Night Me Fatherwon the Voice of Youghal' complete a 17-track set. "It's basicallyan attempt to capture a little of the magic of the time," explainsMark, adding that "each singer also comments briefly on whatmade it so special for them personally." Sunday night's event, compered by Jimmy Flanagan, saw live re-enactments and a crowd of over 200 who relived the preciousmemories that helped bind a community and sustain its spirit indifficult times. The occasion also paid tribute to Nooche for hisservices to The Voice of Youghal, to CRY and to Youghal itself.Presentations were made to him and his wife Agnes on behalf ofCRY, while Voice of Youghal singers present also made a presen-tation to their former host. Con Keogh was also presented with atoken of appreciation from CRY. If the dire future is half as goodas the past, we'll be ok…Mark thanks CRY, Warren Tivy/Claycastle Studios, TonyIrwin/Stoneybuckets Media, Jimmy Flanagan, Michael Sheehanand photographer Tommy Bulman. Memories of the Voice of Youghal cost €10. In the spirit of its her-itage, proceeds, after production costs, go to Youghal Hospice.

The minutes wereread by the secretary Pat Trihy and the financial report was givenby Pat Hannon. It was decided at our meeting to take part in thesinging and acting competiton which will be coming up in the NewYear. Our meeting was followed by a very friendly, efficient and interest-ing guest. Grace O' Brien who works with Mary Daly Associatesshowed us through a power point demonstration some of the workthis company offers. Grace told us about calling to hotels and nurs-ing homes to provide professional accredited food safety trainingand why and how hotels and restaurants can be closed downbecause of poor hygiene etc. This is only one of the many aspectsof this company and Grace assured us that hotels, restaurants andnursing homes are inspected by the Departments on a regularbasis,Fourteen of of our guild went on a night out recently to the grey-hound track in Curaheen Park Cork. A fantastic night was had byall, the four course meal was superb, table service brilliant theyeven came to take our "big" bets at the tables. Most of the wait-ers/waitresses were a bunch of friendly students who made us feelso welcome and they were very helpful with the betting. G.I.Y Youghal

South and East Cork Area Development (SECAD) started a newprogramme in Youghal in October. The programme is called Timeto Change and runs until the start of December. Eighteen partici-pants from Youghal attend each Wednesday morning in Cumannna daoine. The course focuses on the positive and on exploringwhat opportunities are available in Youghal. There is so muchdoom and gloom in the media, sometimes it can be hard to moti-vate ourselves and feel good about the future. The Time to Change programme is about creating a space for peo-ple to explore what they want in their lives. Many people have losttheir jobs in recent times, industries that they worked in for manyyears have literally gone overnight. This can be very hard on ourself-confidence and how we feel about ourselves. This courseallows people to build their confidence and focus on what theywant in their lives. Participants are exploring what it is they want to do next. For

some it is about returning to education and getting a qualificationin an area they are interested in. For others it is about figuring outhow to set up a new business. Others want to get a job and regainself-confidence. Losing our jobs can be an isolating experienceand it can be hard to face the outside world. The benefit of Time toChange is that you can meet like minded people and get supportand encouragement for this period in your life. This course is fully funded by SECAD and is free to participants. There will be more courses next February 2011. Open days willbe held on February 2nd and 9th next year. If you are interestedmore information can be obtained from Christine in SECAD at021 4613432 or [email protected] the mid-term review of the programme the following commentswere made by the participants: "The programme opens your eyesto the future.""I think it is brilliant - shows me what I can achieve.""It has helped me to look at my abilities and identify my strengthsand weaknesses and how I can change.""It is motivating me and changing my attitudes, I'm learning what'sout there.""It has made me clarify in my head more I what I want to do in thefuture and start organising.""It has been an education itself, positive, thoughtful and enlighten-ing."The only suggestion to improve the programme was to have 2classes in a week - very positive feedback indeed to get from thegroup! All in all a great start to this new and exciting initiativefrom SECAD.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME

In 1878, Richard Caulfield published the 'Council Book of theCorporation of Youghal,' a record of corporation meetings andminutes from 1610 onwards. One striking aspect of the book is thelist of grievances that are common to both the medieval and themodern town, despite the centuries which have passed in between.Today's list of grievances with the town are well known and cropup at most council meetings - illegal dumping, dog fouling, roads, footpaths, public order and vandalism being amongst the mostcommon issues raised.Yet, we can easily trace the same issues back to a time whenRichard Boyle was busy garrisoning the town with English settlersor Cromwell's cavalry were quartered here on his bloody cam-paign. For instance, if people are exasperated at the problem ofdogs fouling the town, they should spare a thought for theirmedieval ancestors. In July 1627, complaints were made about thenumber of hogs and pigs which were roaming free along themedieval streets, even finding their way into the sacrosanctChurchyard (St. Mary's Collegiate Church). As a solution, six dayswarning was to be given 'by the drum'* warning people that thewarden could kill or destroy the animals in question if found there.Yet this wasn't the end of the matter. A whole fifteen years later, the issue of swine within the town was still causing complaints. Ina more extreme move, in 1642 (in the midst of the 1641 Irishrebellion), it was decided that 'the great number of hogs, pigs andswine is so noisome (annoying) to all the town by the filth and dirt'that it was allowable to either kill or seize the animal on the spotif it was found roaming loose about the town. Whether the presenttown council will eventually be proclaiming such measures forloose or fouling dogs remains unknown! But concern was also shown in the medieval town over litteringand illegal dumping. Named and shamed in the corporation min-utes in October 1646 are Thomas Pouncy, Abraham Elliot andPhilip Massey for 'laying dirt in the street' whilst the WidowSheffield was blamed for blocking the gutter under Mrs. Tynt'sCastle, causing the street to flood.Public order concerns can also be traced back to these medievalminutes. In 1617, the corporation was demanding that alehousesenter into recognizances for the keeping of good order whilst oncea fortnight, 'the Bailiffs for the better restraining of disorder'would inspect taverns and alehouses and fine any they found thereon Sundays during 'divine service.'In 1646 however, the corporation was seeking to protect the town'simbibers, accusing innkeepers of selling unregulated measures ofbeer and requiring that they henceforth be sold by the 'pottle, quartand pint,' a pottle containing four full pints for those who think aGermanbeer stein (two pint beer mug) is a handful. The number of alehouses was also regulated. In 1616, it was pro-posed to limit the number of alehouses to 20 but by 1656, the num-ber proposed was increased to 30 who were to 'give security tokeep good order.' In comparison, the modern town of Youghalwith its expanded area and larger population has less than twentylicensed premises to its name. Concerns raised by Councillors recently over the state of roadsand pavements are also a repetition of times past. In June 1616, asurvey of paving was undertaken in 'Broad Street' and the town atlarge with repairs to be conveniently carried out by the inhabitantsrather than the corporation. This problem is to be constantly foundthroughout the records, in May 1729 for example, 'the streetsbeing very much out of repair' that 'every person be obliged topave before their holdings to the gutter.'The state of the roads were also a concern. Again it was on theinhabitants that the labour fell, with one person out of everydwelling house expected to undertake work with roads leading tothe Nunnery, Killcoran (Bohurr-Coranne as it was labelled in therecords for April 1615), the Windmill Lane, the 'Corke' Highwayand Two Mile Bridge all targeted for repairs in 1653.Vandalism also caused controversy. The Mall House (or AssemblyRooms as it was then known) was built on reclaimed land around

1779 after much effort by the Corporation. In an attempt to dressup this new streetscape, trees were even planted outside the Mallwhich was a novelty for the town itself owing to the traditional nar-rowness of Youghal's medieval streets. Yet in 1780, so affrontedwas the Corporation by vandalism along this stretch of prosperousYoughal that it offered a 10 guinea reward 'to any person who shallconvict those who lately destroyed the trees growing on the Mallor hereafter shall do so.'Thus, whilst Youghal Councillors and townspeople alike maystruggle with the constant lists of broken paving, poor roads, pub-lic order and littering that constantly crop up in Council meetings, they can take some comfort from the fact that they are neither thefirst nor likely the last generation to struggle with these issues.* - 'By the Drum' - essentially a person beating a drum to garnerattention and announce news to the public.

The night went off with out a hitch, withfantastic food and great music.Joan O’Flynn, president of Camogie was the honoree guest of thenight and gave a fantastic speech on what Camogie means to thecommunity and what a fantastic achievement it was to win the dou-ble. She also said some very nice words about our ownChairperson Kelly McCarthy whom along with Secretary KelmaMcCarthy has done Trojan work in the background to get theYoughal Camogie team back on its feet. The work sometimes goes unnoticed in the background, but notwith this team as we are sure that the 2 girls have made themselvesknown through out the town, as well as the County board in orderto get support and sponsorship for the club.It has been a fantastic year also for the club as 2 of our team matesShona Cunningham and Siobhan Downing represented the club atsenior level with Imokilly. Shona Cunningham has had a wonder-ful year and was awarded Junior Player of the year.Niamh Quillwas awarded Minor Player of the year.Kelma McCarthy was giventhe award of Club person of the year. Good luck to some of ourminor girls who are in the middle of Cork trials. The girls are taking a well deserved break for a few weeks andtalking to people at the Dinner Saturday night everyone is verypositive for the year ahead and looking forward to taking on JuniorB and hopefully next year will be as successful.

U-12 Hurling in Mid-WinterWe have been travelling to Kilkenny over the past few weekendsplaying the qualifying rounds in this hugely successful 10-a-sideall-weather invitational hurling tournament in Carrigeen, CoKilkenny. The best clubs from all over Ireland are invited to thistournament and it is an honour alone to be playing against suchfamous clubs. We came through the qualifiers after some great bat-tles. Our game against St John's from Belfast was a game we willnever forget. This was a very physical encounter, and it took us awhile to get to grips with a very well trained St John's team. Withfive minutes remaining we were five points down, but this teamand management does not like losing and had to dig very deep into the reserves to get two goals and win the game by one point, ona scoreline of Killeagh-Ita's 7 - 1; St John's 4 - 9. One can't butmention the brilliance of Aaron Walsh in goals, this was Aaron'sfirst time playing in goals, but he looked like he played there allhis life.Semi Final :Killeagh Itas 8 - 4 O'Loughlin Gaels 3 - 8 (Kilkenny) This weekend we faced none other than the mighty O'LoughlinGaels from Kilkenny in the semi-final. Our opponents were fastout of starting blocks and had two points on the score board in thefirst five minutes. Cathal Deane had to be withdrawn after six min-utes due to illness, which was a huge blow to the Killeagh-Ita'steam. Our captain Killian Treacy pounced to score a great goal oneight minutes. Killian was nursing a knee injury for the last twoweeks and deserves great credit for playing. Once we got ournoses in front we never looked back. Killian added another pointand then the mighty Andrew Leahy struck for the first of his fivegoals on the twelfth minute. O'Loughlin Gaels struck back with agoal and two points. Daniel Hickey got a great goal on the eigh-teenth minute. Daniel is one of our two eleven year olds on thepanel (the other being Keane Budds), Daniel may be small but hehas the heart of a lion, the bigger the opponent the better forDaniel. Killian hit a free straight to the net and Andrew buried hissecond goal just before half time. Aaron Wash was again excellentin goal, Kevin Murphy was a rock at full back and Luke was excel-lent at corner back. Christy Coughlan, Eoin Fitzgibbon, FergalSmiddy and Keane Budds all worked hard in turn in midfield.Emmett Barron was very effective at full forward, breaking theball for sharp shooters Killian and Andrew. At half time we led by5 - 1 to 1 - 4.O'Loughlin Gaels came storming back at us in the second half, scoring a goal and two points. Jack O' Rourke was now excellingat corner back , while Aaron again stood tall in goals as O'LoughlinGaels threw everything at us. Andrew again popped up for us onthe eighth minute knocking over a point followed by a crackinggoal. Killian fired over a point twelve minutes in, while Cathalovercame his illness and came back on with fifteen minutes to go.This was a huge lift to the team and he played a blinder for the restof the game. Eoin Treacy shifted some great balls to our forwardsand Andrew hit home another goal twenty minutes in. Killian wasnow in real pain and limping badly and had to be withdrawn.Killian was a huge loss but he had played his part in scoring 2 - 3. O'Loughlin Gaels never gave up and scored another goal and twopoints before Cathal hit over a sweet point. Andrew banged in hisfifth goal at the death for a great victory. Our game against StJohn's really stood to us on the night as we were much better pre-pared than we had been in the earlier rounds. This team hasimproved all season and have really toughened up together as ateam and are now proving very hard to beat. Team: Aaron Walsh, Luke Fogarty, Kevin Murphy, Jack ORourke, Christy Coughlan, Cathal Deane 0 - 1, Eoin Fitzgibbon,Andrew Leahy 5 - 1, Emmett Barron, Killian Treacy (capt) 2 -3,Eoin Treacy, Fergal Smiddy, Keane Budds, and Daniel Hickey 1-0. We are now in the final against James Stephens from Kilkenny, another powerhouse in hurling, and we just can't wait to have acrack off them.Sam visits Killeagh On Tuesday last Sam Maguire paid a visit to

the four schools of the parish, and got a great reception in eachschool. Thanks to Ursula, Paudie and Sean for chaperoning Sam,and we hope that he will return, along with his friend Liam, to allour schools again this time next year!Juvenile AGM Thursday 25th 8.00 p.m. The AGM of Killeagh-Ita's Juevenile GAA Club will take place on this ThursdayNovember 25th at 8.00p.m., upstairs in our new pavilion in PáircUí Chinnéide. We are asking all parents of young players to attendthis AGM if possible to hear about our activities of the past year, and to plan for an even better 2011. Bígí ann, gach éinne!Help! In 2008, our Under 12 hurlers won the prestigious JackLynch Cup, a replica of the Liam McCarthy Cup, in the annual NaPiarsaigh tournament. So what, you ask? Well, the cup is missing, last seen in Killeagh Hall sometime around the end of 2008.Someone, somewhere, may be able to delve into their grey matterand recall something about this cup. If you can throw any light onthe mystery, please contact Ursula, Ray or any other committeemember.Juvenile End of Year PartyOn Saturday December 4th, we hold our End of Year party in ournew pavilion in Páirc Uí Chinnéide, from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.This is for all boys from Under 12 down who played with us thisyear. Winter Training in full motion with Youghal C.C. - Sunday 21stNovemberAnother fine fresh Sunday morning greated members of YoughalC.C. last weekend when a group of 10 gathered at Moby Dicks forour weekly spin. The group departed at 9.00am sharp out theDungarvan road for Clashmore and Aglish where we turned up leftfor the Mast and the long drag. All climbed well to the top wherewe traveled on towards the Shanachie and then dropped down intoRing for re-fuelling. On arrival, I noticed that I had punctured andit was pay back time for all the lads as they watched with GLEE asI suffered through the process of changing the flat. As I stood there, they all circled round me like a bunch on Indians circling as poordefenseless wagon out in the Wild West, passing comment as towhat I was doing wrong, when all along I was doing it all right. And to top it off, the Big Chief himself, AKA Magnum P.I. or assome people are calling him " the cyclist formally known as theSecretary " didn't even offer to help me, even though he changedeveryone else's punctures last winter !!!. Moving on, as I finallymanaged to drink my Tea while watching the rest of the groupdeparting, I pondered over the payback I was receiving for all mylovely comments in the papers that were made during the yearabout most of the lads in the Club. Well Have I got NEWS for yeboys, ye might think that ye have softened my cough, but I'm thetype that performs best when under pressure. There is a long win-ter ahead and I'm going to have some fun talking about ye all overthe coming months. Be afraid, be very afraid. On a more seriousnote, we left Ring fully refreshed and took the coast road toArdmore. From there we rode down to Ferry Point and took in thesurprise climb up the back road behind Monatray. We re-groupedat the top and rode steady back to Piltown and Youghal for ourusual all out assault on the Bye-Pass. Spin complete, we arrivedback in Youghal for 12.30 with a refreshing 80km completed on afantastic morning. Concern was again expressed over the where-abouts of Cav O' Mahoney last week. It was decided that we wouldget some "Missing" posters printed up and we would all meet nextTuesday evening, after spinning class, to stick them up locally. Ifthat fails then we will move on to the milk cartons and cerealboxes.A fine group of 11 also gathered at Moby Dicks for the 10 0' clockgroups weekly spin. They also decided to head in the Waterforddirection via Piltown, Ardmore and the Shanachie. From their theyrolled back down into Youghal where they arrived for 12:30 with atesting 35km completed. So testing in fact that Alan and Jim head-ed straight for the café at the Clock Gate for a well deservedCappuccino and all you can eat breakfast. Nice one lads !Club Website Information about the club, cycling in the area andcycling in general, can be viewed at our club website. It has to beseen by all at www.youghalcyclingclub.com.Weekend Spins. As you are all well aware by now, there is a week-ly spin every Sunday morning at 9.00 am sharp leaving from MobyDicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on variousroutes every week usually takes between 2 to 3 hours ( weatherpermitting ) and covers on average between 40 to 50km. The paceis comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a coffee ortea.A second group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morningat 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takesaround 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to40km. The pace is again very comfortable. This is an ideal groupfor anyone interested in taking up the sport.A ladies group spin has also being orgainised for Saturday morn-ings at 9.00am. Anyone interested in attending should contact theclub Secretary for details. New members or visitors to the area are always welcome. If youhave any questions about the club or attending one of our weekendspins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292for details. See you all Sunday Morning !!. By Christy ParkerPrior to November's town council meeting, Youghal Tidy Townschairman Ned Brennan made a brief presentation to the chamber. He began by explaining where Youghal stood in a national andregional context. For the first time ever the town finished abronze-medalled fourth in Category E (population 5,000-10,000)with 279 points, behind Dungarvan( 287), Trim (286) and Dalkey(281). Mr. Brennan reasoned that Youghal could close the gap onthe three leaders by virtue that its showing a greater rate ofimprovement than they are showing. This momentum was reflect-ed in a two mark improvement in 2006/7, by 10 marks in 2007/8,five marks in 2008/9 and by seven marks in 2009/10. "Third placein 2010/11 is achievable," he proclaimed. Regionally, within the South Cork division, Youghal's 279 marksalso held fourth place this year, behind Kinsale (297),Macroom(287) and Ballincollig (283). Again improvement to third place atleast to third place was achievable here, he said.Other 2009/10 achievements included winning the Co. CorkCounty Council Litter League B1 Category. "It's significant thatthere were only 18 national medals awarded in the Cork/Kerryregion and only five bronze awards," he explained, adding that, "atlast we're starting to get into the medal winning areas. "Tidy plansThe past may be tidy but the chairman was keen to focus on afuture littered, so to speak, with aspiration. He pinpointed six areasof prominence: Approach Roads: "We have prioritised for the coming year the approach roads to thetown," he stated. He proceeded that eastern side from theRhincrew roundabout to Greencloyne has issues that needaddressing such as dead trees, truck-mangled grass verges, foot-paths at Foxhole and general grass cutting requirements. On the western approach, he said the flower beds at Kilcoran Placeon the Killeagh Road would be cleared this month and new shrubsinstalled. He hoped the flower beds near the new boat on the lefton the approach to Summerfield would be extended, with a threelarge flower boxes installed to engineer a stronger visual impact.Grass cutting, he proceeded, was the biggest challenge in that areaand he hoped the town and county councils could assist with thataspect. . Dereliction:Derelict sites, unsurprisingly, came in for unavoidable mention. Ifthey couldn't or wouldn't be abolished in some way, perhaps theireffect could be hidden, with painted or embellished adornedhoardings of some sort erected to make the areas more eye-pleas-ing. Perhaps the owners of the Mill Road site might be prevailedupon to do this, he suggested, displaying an optimism that only theholder of a bronze medal, at least, could apply to a firm headinginto liquidation. Equally optimistic, he wondered whether the CIE site atMcCurtainstown could be similarly treated, although it wouldemerge later that the State body has promised to clean up the placein the coming months. The view of the old Hilltop hotel reflectedgraffiti, he said, while "derelict buildings on the quayside alsoneed attention," if not a downright tidal wave! Landscaping:The committee hope to hang more baskets than previous on theLighthouse Hill, with plans for extra flower beds also. Wildlife and Natural Amenities: Mr. Brennan said the committee was working with another volun-tary group to promote this agenda through the distribution ofinformation pamphlets. Sign boards, such as those used to informon local marine life some years ago, were also being considered. Waste Minimisation: The chairman said they were working and progressing withschools towards attaining a green flag award. Tidiness: The word itself reflected ambitions to eradicate dog fouling, con-

duct kerbside weeding, and promote signage cleaning. He againhoped that the town council and other associated bodies such astenants associations could contribute towards improvement inthese areas. Cllr Barbara Murray said the imminent liquidation of GalvinBrothers, proprietors of the Mill Road site, compromised efforts tocombat dereliction at the site. However, she added, the Hilltopgraffiti and associated issues were being addressed by the owners. She felt the town clerk was doing "very well in regards to townissues" but that the county council had a long ways to go to catchup. "The county areas are the ones that always need the most atten-tion," she attested, before advocating "more cooperation betweenthe county council and the tidy towns committee, with the countycouncil pulling their weight and working more closely in coordi-nating with the town council and the committee." Cllr Murray wondered how Cork County Council could deploytwo extra workers to the landfill at a time when tonnage at that sitewas at an all-time low and town's approach roads were dilapidat-ed. Yet they are "screaming out for more workmen," she saidincredulously. Addressing the town manager Patricia Power, the councillor askedwhether she could initiate a move to re-deploy workers to tend tothe periphery areas of Youghal and indeed other towns if need be.Ms Power began that "each area has its own budget…" but CllrMurray interceded that the budget was there, but the workforcewas not. One worker in Youghal had been deceased and notreplaced due to the recruitment embargo, while an opportunity toreplace him through deployment had been lost. The town manager then suggested that a spring meeting bearranged between the tidy towns committee and Cork CountyCouncil, which she would attend. She believed if specific areaswere to be targeted and "a confluence of effort," applied, thenways might be found to bring significant improvement.

This day I will always remember, with heartache and regret, It's the day you were taken from us, how could I ever forget.

The winds of love blow softly, just enough for you to hear,But I still love and miss you, and wish that you were here.

You made the world a better place, in your own special way,And you're still loved so very much, and missed more everyday.

Your leaving caused a lot of tears, and so much grieving too,It was the hardest thing of all to say goodbye to you.

You gave your love until one day, you heard the angels call,And above us now in heaven lives the best Dad of them all.

Sadly missed by your daughter Pearl, son in law Mike, grand-children Pearl, Michael, Emma, Adam, Ann and Family.

this time.

Place them in Dads arm and tell him they’re from me.

Tell him I love and miss him,

And when he turns to smile place a kiss upon his check

And hold him for awhile.

Remembering him is easy, I do it everyday,

But there is an ache within my heart that will never go away.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY

DAVIE O'BRIEN

Should you go first and I remain, to walk the road alone, I'll live in memories garden, dear, with happy days we've known.

In spring I'll wait for roses red, when faded, the lilacs blue.In early fall when brown leaves fall, I'll catch a glimpse of you.

I'll hear your voice, I'll see your smile, though blindly I may grope, the memory of your helping hand will buoy me on with hope. Should you go first and I remain, one thing I'll have you do:

walk slowly down that long long path, for soon I'll follow you. I want to know each step you take, so I may take the same.

For someday down that lonely road, you'll hear me call your name.

Sadly missed by your loving wife, Ena

3rd AnniversaryIn Loving Memory of a darling Baby Son

Fionn O'SheaWhose second Anniversary occurs on17th Nov., 2009.

When God calls little children to dwell with him above, We mortals sometime question the wisdom of his love,

For no heartache compares with the death of one small child, Who does so much to make our world, seem wonderful and mild,

Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to his fold, So He picks a rosebud, before they can grow old.

God knows how much we need them, and so he takes but a few, To make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view.

Believing this is difficult still somehow we must try,But the saddest word mankind knows will always be "Goodbye."So when a little child departs we who are left behind must realize

God loves children as Angels are hard to find

Love you always and forever Mum and Dad

It has been a week of highs and lows for the club. Highs werereached when our Senior girls were crowned County SeniorLeague Champions and a particularly low ebb when with the blowof the referees whistle our girls were on the Imokilly team weredenied the County Senior A Championship title for 2010. Despiteplaying to the best of their abilities it was not to be, well done andhard luck.Senior League Final: Wednesday 10th saw our Senior girls trav-el to Riverstick for the 8pm throw in under lights againstClonakilty. Clonakilty opened the scoring and worked very hardfrom the outset. Despite this pressure Eanna ,Mary O Connor,Noelle and Kate all managed to score and to have us 6 points upat half time. Conscious of the time slipping away our girlsincreased the pressure, and goals from Kate and Angela followedby points from Annie and Mary secured our position. Clonakiltydidn’t score in the second half and the result was truly in ourfavour. We were crowned County League Champions 2010 to addto our Championship title for the year. Many thanks to all the girlsfor being present on the night, particularly those who had to trav-el long distances mid-week to play. Thanks indeed to Kevin, J.P.and Tadgh who have been involved in training the girls during theseason. We look forward to the slide show of all the photos takenby Martin to be presented at our Annual Dinner Dance (moredetails later). The changes will particularly affect car park usage, takeresident parking permit holders off the main street, but give hack-ney operators cause to grumble.Car Parks: The council has opted to avoid introducing paid parking in carparks but has imposed time limits where previously none existed. The new laws impose a three hour parking limit "during normalbusiness hours" (9 am-6 pm)at Dolphin Square, Fairfield, Dunne’sPark, Nealons Quay and De Valera Street (with the exception ofnos. 22-37, which are for resident’s parkin permit holders only.) No time restraints will apply in the car parks at New CatherineStreet, Front Strand (2), McCurtainstown and Priory Court. It’s perhaps worth mentioning also that "a person shall not over-haul or carry out repairs to a vehicle while it is parked in a car parksave where it is necessary to do so in order to enable the vehicle tobe removed from the car park." Neither can a person park a vehi-cle there for the purpose of selling it, while trailers used solely forthe purpose of boating, sailing, fishing and water sports maybeparked in Nealon’s Quay, but not overnight. Residents Parking Permits: Residents Parking Permits can be obtained for €40 per annum, subject to the usual conditions of being resident in a disc parkingarea, and either being on the Register of Electors or hold proof oth-erwise of being legitimately entitled to the Permit, alongside a sig-nature by a Peace Commissioner, Solicitor or Commissioner ofOaths. Residents Parking Permits are valid until the 28th ofFebruary each year. Resident Parking Permit holders on the North Main Street cannotpark on that street between 11.00 am and 4.30 pm Monday toSaturday but may park for free in any car park. Additionally, aNorth Main Street resident may opt to hold a Residents ParkingPermit in respect of the next available street when making anapplication. This means that a person on night shift work, forexample, may acquire a permit allowing them to park in an alter-native street to avoid penalties. On street parking: A parking fee of €1 per hour will apply during business hours, witha minimum fee of 20c. Additionally, Bye Law 8(f) stipulates thatwhen the maximum parking period has elapsed, the vehicle mustleave that specific disc parking street for one hour before it canreturn to the same disc parking area. They can meantime park inanother street. Free on-street parking from 1-2 pm will remain. Hackney Operators: The new bye-laws state that hackney vehicles i) cannot park in theSouth Main Street/North Main Street areas except to setdown/pickup customers in the three designated points on thosestreets; ii) cannot be parked for longer than 30 minutes in any carpark; iii) the set down/pick up areas are to operate on a 24 hourbasis excusive to hackneys licensed by the TaxiRegulation/Commission for Taxi Regulation; iv) The maximumset down/pick up time in areas where Construction ParkingPermits are in operation (Bye law 18) is five minutes; v) wherehackney spaces are provided, hackney drivers/operators are sub-ject to the same pay parking restrictions as al other motorists andmust pay the relevant pay parking charges that apply to the area inwhich they park. Effectively the laws mean that hackney driverscannot sit and wait within the town centre during business hoursbut will operate on the basis of responding to calls when required.Doctors Parking Permits: The applicant must be a practising doctor within the town councilarea, permits cost €40 per annum and the stipulations are much thesame as those applying to Resident Permit holders. Construction Parking Permit:The owner or occupier of property adjoining or near a public roadand who intends to carry out construction or refurbishment work

to such property may apply for a Construction Parking Permit.Conditions attached are numerous and detailed and supplied withthe permit no doubt. Authorised Personnel: Bye-law 19 states: "A person shall give on demand to an officer oremployee of the Council (authorised for the purpose of these bye-laws by the Council) his or her name and address. They shall nei-ther resist or obstruct nor aid or incite any person to resist orobstruct an officer or servant of the Council in the execution of hisor her duty or lawful exercise of his or her authority Promoting economyTown Clerk Liam Ryan says the new bye lawswill help to ensure a regular flow of traffic on the street, to the ben-efit of traders and the wider economy. He says "a car parkingspace costs approximately €15,000 to develop" and that it’s impor-tant to have a turnover of car parking spaces to promote commer-cial activity. "Every time a car park space turns over its worthapproximately €25 to the local economy," he states. The town clerk says the argument in favour of three hour parkinglimits in the Fairfield and Dolphin’s Square centres around com-muters parking in those areas before taking the bus to Cork to dotheir shopping, "with no benefit to the local economy at all." Heconcludes, that, "like everything else, we’ll review the bye-lawsregularly and if something is seen not to be working, we’ll endeav-our to correct it."Copies of Road Traffic and Car Park Bye-Laws 2010 are availablefrom the town council offices at the Mall Arts Centre for €2.

RAAM BY THE NUMBERS Total distance is more than 3000 Miles. Collectively, the Solo and Team finishers will travel a

combined distance equivalent to circling the Earth at the equator seven times.

In the 29 year history of the race, Solo finishers have ridden more than one million miles - that's two round trips to the moon.

Lowest elevation is 170 feet below sea level. Highest elevation is more than 10,000 feet high above sea level. This elevation range exceeds two vertical miles.

Each Solo and Team will climb more than 100,000 feet. This is roughly the distance from the ground to the edge of space, more than three times the altitude flown by commercial jetliners and almost four times the altitude of Mt. Everest.

Less than 200 solo and tandem racers have officially finishedsolo RAAM earning the title of RAAM Finisher, compared with over 2000 individuals who have summated Mt. Everest and 200 racers every year compete in the Tour de France.

Racers have come from 5 continents - North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe. More than 25 countrieshave been represented in the Race Across America.

RAAM crosses the five longest rivers that are entirely in the US: the Mississippi, Missouri, Rio Grande, Arkansas and the Ohio.

The RAAM staff during the race is more than 50 people. More than 200 people staff Time Stations. Racers are supported by more than 800 people. More than 200 vehicles are part of the RAAM caravan across the country.

In the last four years, RAAM racers have raised more than$4,000,000 for charities.

Why RAAM?"Because it's there" was George Mallory's answer, as to why climbMt. Everest.RAAM has a similar draw. At the very least, it's the honor ofadding their name to the prestigious roll call of RAAM Finishersand Team RAAM Finishers.RAAM is more than a bike race. It is about ordinary people beinggreat. It's about realising dreams, a journey of the heart and soul. It's about being the toughest of the tough. It's about camaraderie, teamwork, and the incredible RAAM family. It's about taking thestage for a charity or cause that matters, to raise awareness andfunds. It's about the vastness, richness, beauty, and generosity ofthe United States of America and the people who live here. It's alifetime experience never to be repeated. The Race Across America endures due to its amazing effect on thehuman consciousness and for its incredible feats of willpower, inspiration, and heart. The Race Across America is one of the most respected and longestrunning annual endurance events holding legendary stature theworld over. It is one of the pinnacles of sporting accomplishment, globally seen as the highest rung of the endurance sports ladder.Since 1982, RAAM has a rich and storied history standing as amonument to human endeavours. The Race Across America is an event so staggering that merely tofinish is, for most, the accomplishment of a lifetime. RAAMinspires everyone that it touches. A monumental race contestedwith the utmost of sportsmanship and zeal. Truly, RAAM is larg-er than life. A breeding ground for champions, a testing
