CHAIRMAN’S CHAT - NOVEMBER 2013

Hi everyone, happy November!

We have the AGM and Xmas social coming up on Sat 7th December at the Scout Hut on Oakhill Crescent, just off Kings Gate above the Atholl Hotel. Bring a dish of food to share. I would encourage as many members as possible to come along and promise not to get you involved in anything you don’t want to be.

We are coming to the end of our Wednesday Street Series, moving into Wednesday Night O next with an introductory event at Hazlehead on the 20th November, before the Deeside Night Cup (DNC) proper begins at Bellwood Aboyne on the 27th Nov. The Hazlehead introductory event is a chance to try a slightly easier course at a friendly nearby location, or just to dust off and test out your head torches and remember what it’s all about. If you have not done Night O before, this is the year to start; surprisingly, it is great fun and it’s addictive, ask Lesley.

The future of Telegramp is in question as Rachel stands down. I know you all like it, just as I do. However my own view is that Telegramp has come to the end of its useful life, the effort to prepare it is difficult to justify in terms of benefit it provides, since we all get the info we need from the web and a blog or Facebook page can/could provide other ways for us to share our stories and news. Times have changed since Telegramp was the only way to check out what was on and share news. If you have views on this let me know and if you feel strongly enough then volunteer to take over as editor.

See you at the AGM and in a dark forest soon, Sam

To Aberdeen University Orienteering Club who are now officially up and running (pun intended) after a fashion all thanks to Alistair Murgatroyd’s vision and enthusiasm to regenerate the club. Great to see you all at the Urban O events at the start of term, even in that foul weather for the Abz Uni event, and we look forward to seeing you at some more soon.

Adrian (an AUOC ‘OP’) and Jess/GRAMP committee have been helping out with the official side of things to get AUOC registered with SOA and other club members have helped with access to maps, Condes etc etc to help the studes put on their own events. Low key stuff so far but we look forward to the invite to a “proper” event soon – no pressure guys!

By the time you read this, AUOC will have taken part in another rejuvenation – the Scottish Students’ Orienteering Champs being organised by EUOC 9th/10th Nov. Sounds like it will be a great weekend whether they manage to win anything or not with talk of a curry party in between the O stuff. (Think I might defect - room for a mature student or two? Ed.)

GRAMP CHRISTMAS AGM AND SOCIAL7pm - Saturday 7th Dec

Same venue as last year in the Scout Hut on Oakhill Crescent at 7pm prompt (and we may have a running around game beforehand to warm you all up as it takes a while for the heaters to kick in!)

Short AGM followed by Gramp Champs prizegiving, supper and games afterwards. Bring a dish to share for the supper please and your favourite tipple.

Everyone welcome – Juniors as well as Seniors – and we want to hear your views, ideas, gripes, suggestions on anything to do with GRAMP events and activities so don’t hold back!

Any queries or items you’d like putting on the agenda? Contact Ian Hamilton. We're looking for a couple of new committee members for next year BTW – contact Sam to discuss.

Bear in mind that things may change by the time the events happen so don’t take this list as gospel truth and check on the relevant club’s website for details or ask a fellow Gramp to do so if you don’t have access.

DEESIDE NIGHT CUP 2013/14

It’s coming to a wood near you very soon, starting Wednesday 20th Nov with a training event at Hazlehead Park then straight into the serious stuff at Bellwood on 27th.

For a full list of dates, venues, travel maps and chat take a look at the DNC Blog http://dncchat.wordpress.com/

Starts 6-7pm. Courses close 7:30-8pm depending on weather/area/organiser. Seniors £4, Juniors/Students £2.50.

There are 2 courses of about 5k for the DNC and 3k for the DN(mini)C, both TD5 or Green standard so if you’re a beginner not yet confident of doing a Green alone then we’ll have to try and find you an experienced running partner (it’s only fair on the planners not to have to wait for hours trying to decide whether to call out the Rescue for you!)

LAST EVER TELEGRAMP?

This will certainly be my last issue as Editor and, as nobody has expressed an interest in taking over, this may well be the last issue ever.

Personally, I think it’s time for a seachange as the immediacy of email/website/Facebook etc makes newsletters seem rather old hat these days. It certainly seems that fewer and fewer folk enjoy crafting articles but more and more are quite happy to send me a link to something interesting they’ve spotted online or listened to on the radio. Seems pointless me then doing their ‘dirty work’ and summarising it all into a somewhat static article in black and white when you can have the full interactive, technicolour version with one click.

I also suspect that GRAMPs are generally better at chatting than writing and because we put on so many events it seems that you’ve already told each other all your news in a car park somewhere face-to-face and so don’t see the need to put it into writing as well.

So many thanks to all those who’ve contributed over the past few years, both unbidden and browbeaten, and if you feel the urge in the future and TG is still in limbo then we can always publish on the website instead.

Rachel

SOL 2013 Final Rankings for GRAMPsBest 4 of 7 scores count but as many GRAMPs didn’t manage to get to rack up 4 events I’ve indulged in a little statistical daydreaming…. had you managed 4 events at your average score then you’d have potentially finished in the position shown in brackets after your name.Very flaky logic, I know, but it might just spur some of you on to make the effort to get to more SOLs next year?

Anyway, congratulations go to the winners of course – 6 GRAMPs this year or 7 if you count Katrina too - but also to the likes of Foss and Erik who quietly did themselves proud and both got 3rd place through consistent runs all year.

Well done guys – Scotland won all 5 trophies again this year’s Junior Inter-Regional Cup and Sasha, Karen and Calum were there to help the team to victory, putting ScotJOS up at the top of the regional squads!!

Meanwhile, over in Ireland, Jack Gomersall and Katrina McLeod both came 3rd M/W20 to help Scotland clean up in the Senior Home Internationals too. Wow! What a week for Scottish orienteering!

Sonia Armitage, Ali Robertson and Rob Hickling were part of a somewhat depleted Scottish Vets team that travelled to Norfolk for the Veteran Home Internationals. The team was plagued by injuries and dropouts in the fortnight leading up to the event and despite Rob’s best efforts at twisting the arm of everyone over 35 at Crathes to answer the call for runners ScotVOS didn’t manage to field a full team in the end. They finished third overall as England won everything bar the Ireland vs Wales Trophy.

That was Rob’s last event as Scottish Vets Manager after 7 years service and a big thankyou to him for his input and commitment over the years. No doubt if he keeps up his current level of fitness and O skills he’ll be answering the call to run for his country from the other side of things in 2014 and many years to come.

GRAMP JUNIOR NEWS issue 29

Junior Inter-Area Competition success for North

Patrick Lang, Josie Gomersall , Keith Yardley, Ailsa Anderson, Sasha Chepelin, Calum McLeod, Naomi Lang, Paul Caffyn, Lachlan Kirk, Alex Lang, Struan Kirk, Laura Barraclough, Isobel Anderson and Jack Gomersall all took part in the JIA held at Scolty and did Team North and themselves proud. Some ran exceptionally well. Some, like Struan, ran a Yellow for the good of the relay team even if they felt they were capable of much more. Some quietly accepted that their brikke had failed – sorry Naomi! Everyone had great fun taking part.

Never has that little triangle junction in the heart of Scolty been soooo noisy! Amazingly, after pegging round their relay courses and cheering each other on, many of the GJOs and other Juniors still had enough energy to have a stormer of a race at SOUL 5 in Banchory and then did it all again at SOL 6.

Well done everyone!
