Ways to celebrate Advent as a family from Mrs. Amos

Begin by Blessing your Advent wreath. The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional practice which has found its placein the Church as well as in the home. The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent oron the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrated in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent oranother member of the family. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord.Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth. Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines 16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read:Reader: The Word of the Lord R/. Thanks be to God.With hands joined, the leader says:

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdomthat teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light thecandles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christs promise to bring us salvation. May he comequickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord R/. Amen. The blessing may conclude with a verse from O Come, O Come, Emmanuel: O come, desire of nations, bind in onethe hearts of humankind; and be thyself our Prince of peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Then light the first candle.

A "Jesse Tree" . . . is another tradition your family can include in your Advent observance, especially if you haveyoung children. A Jesse Tree depicts the relationship of Jesus with Jesse and other biblical figures who were theancestors of Jesus. Jesse was the father of King David and is often looked upon as the first person in the genealogy of

Jesus. For your own Jesse Tree, a branch can be placed into a pot or a large vase at the beginning of Advent andevery day a new ornament can be added to it. These ornaments represent individual figures or stories from the Old and New Testaments. As the children place the ornaments onto the branch, a parent can read an appropriate Scripture passage that talk about the given ancestor of Jesus. There are many passages that can be chosen and many symbolsthat can represent various figures. Each family can create their own list of figures and symbols.

Make or purchase an Advent calendar and open the window for the first day of the season or download the FamilyAdvent Calendar from usccb.org, and post it in your home as a reminder to take time for prayer and family every dayduring this holy season.
