The month of November brings interesting and exciting

times. As we begin to prepare for Christmas at the

beginning of Advent hopefully we will find ourselves

preparing for a new Vicar of Finedon. Neil and I will be

interviewing applicants for a new Priest with the Bishop of

Peterborough during the month.

Over the past 18 months we have fallen into a comfort zone

with our visiting priests. They have served us very well.

We have been privileged to have had their help. If we are

able to appoint a new Vicar of Finedon we are not going to

find the Angel Gabriel, there is no such thing as a perfect

priest. What Neil and I ask is for your prayers to help us

find the right person for the parish of Finedon.

On the subject of the Chilean Miners nobody mentioned in

the press that the miners had asked for a crucifix, rosary,

statue of Mary and other saints into be sent down to them.

Or that the 9th miner rescued was appointed as their

spiritual leader during their time underground. Shortly

after the 33 miners were trapped a statue of the patron

saint of miners, Saint Lawrence, was taken to the accident

site complete with miner’s lamp and helmet. That is why

the rescue was named San Lorenzo. Honest to goodness

faith, love and prayers within the mine and around t he

world must have gone some way to save those miners.

Remembrance Evensong

On 7th November we will be remembering all those loved ones we have lost over the past 12 months. We invite back all the relatives who have had a funeral service in Church to a special Evensong. Any families who have lost a dear one over the past year and did not have a funeral in Church but who would like to join our special service please contact Jane on 680522 or Pat Peet on 680773.

Flower Festival committee

We would like to thank all who supported our Flower Festival in any way. It was a very enjoyable weekend even though it was a bit chilly on the Sunday. We rely on the help of many to put up tents and to prepare the church for the arrangers, whose flowers received many compliments this year. Thank you to Mhairi our May Queen for drawing the raffle. Refreshments were again very popular, thank you to Jean and Tracey and Helpers. We had a wonderful concert on Saturday evening, thank you to

Jonathon Reynolds and all who entertained us. It was good to see Canon Beaumont and Alison for our 9.30am service. Thank you to all young and not so young for all your help and support. We hope to be able to donate approximately £3,000 to Church funds

St Marys Thursday Club

Peterborough Choral Festival On Saturday 9th October, members of Finedon St Mary’s Church choir joined with choirs from churches all around the diocese for the annual Choral Festival at Peterborough Cathedral. Thanks to Bryan and Christine a coach had been arranged to get us to Peterborough in good time for lunch and for the final afternoon rehearsal. What a wonderful experience it was to sing in the cathedral along with the cathedral choir and so many other choirs from the diocese - we were actually singing that anthem which had seemed to be impossible the night before. It’s amazing what you can do with a couple of hundred others. During the ceremony, awards were presented and Gill Dunn was presented with her Bishop’s Award - congratulation Gill. It was good to see Finedon so well represented - many thanks to everyone who came along to support.

Harvest Boxes

Thank you to all who filled their harvest boxes with change for the Pakistan children appeal. The children at Finedon Mulso Church of England Junior School just managed to make their little boxes that they had made survive the journey to Church. It took four of us about an hour to count and bag all pennies. We were able to send £282.34 to World Vision. The fruit and vegetables donated towards the harvest were distributed with the Infant School‘s gifts to the elderly housebound in Finedon. The School Harvest service was the first to be held with the two schools

together which was an joyous occasion despite discovering we did not have enough room to seat children and parents from both schools. We had to scramble around to put out more chairs but eventually managed to find a seat for everyone. Next time we will be prepared. Thank you to Janet and Bet who provided tea and biscuits for the parents afterwards.

Remembrance Day 2010

Once again the annual Remembrance Day Service will be held at the War Memorial on Sunday 14th November 2010 at 11.00 am. For those groups wishing to take part in the parade, it will again assemble at the Mulso School and be ready to march off at 10.40am. On Thursday 11th November some of the children from the Mulso Junior School will be placing crosses at the War Memorial as part of the ceremony of the ‘Two Minutes Silence’. All are welcome to attend both ceremony’s. There will be a Remembrance service in the Wesleyan Chapel on Sunday 14th November at 6.00 pm - all welcome

Mothers Union Our diocesan worldwide representative Sue Tringham, came to our last meeting and enrolled two new members to our branch. We then gave her a cheque for £120, being the profit from our strawberry tea, to help with the work of the Mothers Union Worldwide. Our next meeting will be a Bring and Buy Sale and raffle with “The Guilded Bells” providing entertainment. All are invited to join us at the Mission Room on Tuesday 2nd

November at 2.30pm for a cup of tea and a fun afternoon with all of the proceeds going to

church funds.

Christmas Parcels

This year’s house-to-house collection raised £2,248. The top three collectors were Mrs Maureen Church (£190.11), Mesdames Mary Skellington and Vi Waller (£167.05) and myself (£119). This month’s meeting will take place on Monday 8th November at 7.30 pm. Our speaker will be Donna Smith who will tell us about Indigo Jewellery and Accessories. As usual there will be refreshments, a raffle and a bring and buy stall. All are welcome, members free. visitors £2.50 We welcome guests and prospective new members, so of you would like to find out more about your local WI, please do not hesitate to come along on the 8th and ask any committee member.

Race Night

A big thank you Malcolm Harris, the Friends of St. Mary's and everyone who supported the Race Night in October and helped to make it such a success. The total amount raised on the evening for church funds was an amazing £1328.00.

Finedon Local History Society

The Annual General Meeting of the History Society will be held on Monday 22nd November in the Mission Room, Well Street at 7.30pm. This will be followed by a presentation of slides from the societies own photo archive. Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided.

Carol Singing Around the Streets of Finedon

As on previous years, Finedon Local History Society will be organising carol singing around the streets of Finedon. This will take place on the evening of Monday December 20tht and everyone is invited to join in. This is a community event and not for fund raising. No collection will be sought. Full details will be given in the December Magazine

Candles at Christmas

After the success of the Candles lit for loved ones on Christmas Eve last year we will be repeating it again this year. The candles may be different, in a coloured glass candle holder, and you will be able to take them home afterwards. The cost will be £2.00. We have to test them first in the dark. Denise will be taking orders and labels for messages will be available in December.

Townswomen’s Guild

Mike Neville from Rushden will be our speaker this month. His talk is entitled Trust me - I was an Estate Agent! The meeting will be at 7.30pm on November 4th in the Town Hall. The Social Half Hour will be lead by the Scrabble Group and the competition will be for ‘an unusual house’.

Dog Fouling, Finedon

As the nights have started to draw in, areas of Finedon village that had previously been almost free from dog fouling are now being affected due to irresponsible dog ownership. Examples brought to my attention include the areas of Hayden Road, Mulso Road and Avenue Road and the pavement near the school on Orchard Road. One or two anti social dog owners not picking up dogs fouling will soon result in an area becoming unsightly and unpleasant and raising public health concerns. If you notice this problem and feel able to do so speak politely to the person concerned at the time as this may be sufficient to improve the owner’s behaviour. If this is not possible or is not successful, please report the details to either the Dog Warden or the Environmental Wardens at the Council. Information on the description/breed of the dog, the time, date and location of the incident, the frequency it occurs and information on the dog owner will be useful to us in investigating the problem. Please note that if a dog is witnessed by an authorised officer of the Council fouling in a public area and you do not clear up the faeces forthwith, the dogs owner could be issued with a £75.00 fixed penalty notice or could be taken to court with a fine of up to £1000. In my day it was about this time of year that there was a huge kafuffle when the Laurence Wood Drama Group tried to put on a production of Tennessee Williams Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Star Hall. The RSPCA and Cat’s Protection League got called in. It was all a bit sensitive because at the time they was building the A6 which meant the cat crossing at the top of the Burton Road was being paved over. And of course it meant the poor little pussies had nowhere safe to cross. I expect many of you remember the road being built. We had dozens of Irish and Scottish Navvies staying in the town. It was a big boost for local businesses. But they did bring some of their own catering. The main contractors were Wimpey and they had a lot of ex-McAlpine blokes working for them, so a lot had come down from Scotland. The site foreman was from Skye; Dougal McDougal. Mean as Greenwich, he was. He wouldn’t even pay for a haircut. He’d let his hair grow all long and shaggy like an Afghan. He brought his own cook with him. What an interesting chap he was. He went by the name of Hamish MacDuff. He was only about 19 years old, thin as a rake and tall as something very tall. He could whip up a substantial three course meal out of almost nothing. He turned up with a load of minced Highland Beef and proceeded to make all beef patties that he called beef burgers. They were delicious. Dougal quickly cottoned on to selling these burgers to us locals. We loved them. The only problem for Dougal was that the men had to stop working to eat them. As you know it would be very messy to eat a burger without the bun to keep it in check. Now Finedon had several bakers at the time, and a chap called Doughy Hood came up with the idea of shoving the burger in one of his floury baps. Dougal was delighted, soon he had his men eating and working at the same time. You’ll have noticed

that to this day, parts of the A6 have got patches with the consistency of stale breadcrumbs. Wimpey were very happy and went on to open their own chain of burger bars. Hamish emigrated to the USA and took his idea with him. Course the Americans changed the name , first to Hamish Burgers, before they shortened it and confused everyone human on the planet and frightened one or two pigs. Oh and old Laurence Wood got a local playwright; Pharmacy Williams to write a play about Hamish and the buns.. It wasn’t very successful. They called it; Baps of a Scot Thin Youth.
