Mountains and valleys made travel and communication between cities difficult, and the lack of substantial rivers combined with the moist Mediterranean climate made joint irrigation projects impractical and unnecessary.

Common gods, common interests, war, sports and politics contributed to Greek unity.The first Olympic games were held in 776 B.C. It encouraged unity because they had a love for sports – cities would shut down for the games!

Greeks established colonies on islands in the Aegean Sea, north of the Aegean in Thrace and east of the Aegean in Ionia along the coast of Asia Minor

Cyrus conquered Ionia. The first Persian ruler to launch an invasion of mainland Greece was Darius

I. Xerxes I started the second Persian invasion of Greece. The Hellespont

slowed them down. Thermopylae was the narrow pass that held the Spartans off. The small Athenian fleet defeated the great Persian fleet in Salamis.

Greek cities reflected the structure of Greek families by one man was responsible for the family religion and one man was given responsibility for the worship of the city’s gods.

Sparta had oligarchy as their government. The people of Sparta who were not considered part of the ruling class

were the Helots. The ruling class spent most of their time training to fight. Spartan education was extremely harsh and almost entirely physical. Spartans were reluctant because war made it harder for the small ruling

class to control the Helots. Pericles brought Athenian democracy to its best. In a representative democracy, he people elect men to represent them in

the government. In a direct democracy, the people themselves make the big decisions of government directly. Athens used direct.

Pericles encouraged patriotism in Athens through is eloquent speeches. Athens became dependent on its empire because is was more prosperous

and continued so. Many served the government in jobs and they were provided the money for their service.
