FROM THE RABBI’S STUDYDear Friends,

The end of February, we celebrate the arrival of the Hebrew month of Adar, the month of Purim, andwith it a period of hope, joy, and the glimmers of redemption they bring to our lives. Throughout theMediterranean basin, the Near East, North Africa, and much of the European continent, the period ofAdar (and Nissan, the Hebrew month that follows) signals the arrival of spring, the lengthening andwarming of days, and nature’s annual regeneration. At the same time, the months of Adar and Nissanand their celebrations offer us important reminders of the evolution or unfolding of our approachesto redemption and an opportunity to evaluate our practices during the happiest and most liberatingmoments of the Jewish liturgical calendar.

One of the hallmarks of our celebrations of Purim and Passover is the association between the salvation of our proto-Jewish ancestors on the one hand, and the overcoming of anti-Hebrew and Judean oppression and persecutionon the other. Thus, part and parcel of our traditional Purim joy is the vilification of Haman, descendant of our Biblicalarch-enemy Amalek and pre-cursor of state-sponsored anti-Judaism, and the boisterous merry-making associated withhis humiliation, downfall, and demise. In fact, the festivity associated with Purim has included religious encouragementto consume alcohol to the point of confusion between friend and foe (B. Talmud Megillah 7b.) Further, the sense ofelation with this ancient victory over our enemies would bear upon other, non-ritual, aspects of Jewish life in the diaspora. For example, it reinforced the Talmudic Sages’ sense that Adar is a better time than most to litigate against non-Jews, forit was thought the timing may increase the likelihood of a favorable outcome to the Jewish party (B. Talmud Ta’anit 29b.)Adar came to be seen as an auspicious period in our calendar, unlike others that included our memories of loss and defeat. It is not difficult to understand why non-Jews would experience uneasiness with Purim and its celebrations. In time, mis-translations of Haman’s hanging as a crucifixion enhanced Christian concerns regarding the identificationof Haman with their Christ and added to suspicion and fear.

Already in the 5th century C.E., the Romans (in Theodosius’ Code) sought to regulate the Jewish celebration of Purim.Later, in the High Middle-Ages, the fear and hatred of Jews and Judaism would occasionally lead to friction and violenceon and around Purim. Conversely, on at least one occasion, the intervention of a 13th century local ruler to secure theJewish community of Narbonne (in the south of France) from violent rioting and looting was quickly associated with thePurim miracle. In the 16th century, Martin Luther, the father of Christian Protestantism, also critiqued the observance ofPurim, and Jews’ perceived eagerness for violence and wish for vengeance against their antagonists. In short, throughoutour history Adar and Purim would become flashpoints of misunderstanding, seasonally stoking fear and insecurity andincreasing the animosity, especially between Christians and Jews.

Purim represents a set of challenges to us as contemporary Reform Jews. One such challenge is to learn about andopenly discuss Adar, Purim, and their observances and rituals, and to consider and reflect upon our tradition with a critical eye, while creating and promoting a fun-filled, joyous, and hopeful celebration of our holiday. Another is to fullyappreciate the narrative of threat, deliverance, and survival of the Jewish people while not turning this holiday into aninsular and uncomfortable moment for the large number of our non-Jews relatives, friends, and neighbors. Yet anotherchallenge is to come to terms with the rise of anti-Judaism in our society at this time, and to confront the undiminishedtension in our quest to live full Jewish lives and advance Jewish identity among our children and grandchildren whilewholeheartedly integrating into our American society and living without fear of exclusion or marginalization.

Perhaps it is time for us to re-learn Purim and transform the month of Adar. Let us imagine Adar as a future month of interfaith outreach, community-building, and partnership. Let us re-focus our energies on the promotion of civil discourseand the bridging of our social and religious divides. Let us consider how to engage in learning about Adar and Purimad invite others to join our effort. Both sadly and happily, the Purim narrative remains full of meaning and relevance in our day. Let us muster the courage and will to address it in all its richness and complexity, and let us make the best of it. I send you my warmest wishes for a heathy, happy, peaceful, and fulfilling month of Adar and a wonderfulPurim holiday.

– Rabbi Jonathan Cohen

EXCELLENCE IN ACTION:MAZEL TOV TO DR. EDWARD MAGISTE!Saturday afternoons and Sundaymornings when you walk intoroom one, you might be surprisedat what you see. The room isbursting with energy emanatingfrom the small groups of studentsworking together collaborating, brainstorming, problem solvingand co-creating.

Each table is facilitated by aknowledgeable and dedicatedmadrich/a (teen aide). Theirteacher, Ed Magiste, can be foundmaking his way around the roomguiding and supporting quietly inthe background.

Several years ago we launched a brand new curriculum for our 6th grade(5th & 6th for Shabbaton) which requires a deep and intensive knowledgeof a wide range of topics. Perhaps even more important, it requires ateacher who is dedicated to working closely with our madrichim as a mentor in order to build their capacity as facilitators.

Ed Magiste has worked tirelessly with his team of madrichim to helpstrengthen their confidence and raw skills. He is dedicated to supportingthem to be successful role models and facilitators in order to create moremeaningful learning experiences for our children. Watching him work withthe teens and students together is like watching art unfold before youreyes. It is truly beautiful to witness.

We are seeing a rise in emailspoofing that appears to come from Temple clergy and execu-tives. Email “spoofing” happenswhen scammers forge the sendingdetails on an email message. Themessage may appear to come fromRabbi Cohen but isn’t really.

Please know that clergy and staffof The Temple would never emailyou directly and ask you to buyany kind of gift card. It is a goodrule of thumb to never complywith emails asking you to buy giftcards or send money.

It is unfortunate that scammersaren’t using all of that clevernessfor good. We must be on alert andnever take for granted what seemslike a sincere appeal for a favor.

Here are a few ways to check if theemail you receive is spoofed:

• For Gmail, open the email andclick on the three vertical dotsnext to the reply arrow andselect “Show Original”

• For Outlook, open the emailand go to File – Properties and view the “Internet Header”

• For most email types, clickForward which will then show the “To” and “From” emailaddresses from the original email

LEAVE A LEGACY AT TTTISince 1850, The Temple-Tifereth Israel (TTTI) has been the center of Jewish life in theCleveland area, providing a sustaining source from which individuals and families –young and old – can nourish their spirits and enrich their lives. TTTI truly is a family:a family that works together to foster an inclusive, connected, innovative, and inspirational spiritual home. We provide Jewish education and activities for all ages.

We are proud of our Shabbaton program for young families, Ganon Gil and our Temple Learning Center – as well as our adult education offerings, which include adultlearning classes, Torah Study, Adult B’nai Mitzvah, and guest speakers who are experts in their fields. Together, we have built a vibrant Jewish community and established long-lasting relationships that support us throughout our lives.

As Jews, we are called upon to preserve and strengthen what past generations have built in our community. As our ancestors taught, we are obligated to plant seeds for the generations that come after. We invite you to join us in assuringthat TTTI continues to flourish for future generations. It is up to us to help ensure that our children and grandchildrenwill have a vibrant community in which to learn about Judaism and Jewish values, develop a personal commitment toJudaism, and become part of the Jewish people.

Including The Temple-Tifereth Israel in your estate planning can be a meaningful way to create a legacy for these futuregenerations. There are many different ways to make such gifts, including:

• Adding a bequest provision to your will or trust• Adding TTTI as a beneficiary to your retirement plan, life insurance policy, or donor advised fund residual • Donating a gift of real estate

KESHER PURIM!HONORING & CONNECTING WITH SENIOR TEMPLE MEMBERS

Sunday, March 8 at NoonIf you are seeking a wonderful individual or family experience, please join usto help pack and deliver Purim (Mishloach Manot) bags to our senior Templemembers who don’t regularly get out and about. Each volunteer or family maydeliver 2 or 3 bags filled with holiday goodies and beautiful Purim cards (courtesyof Ganon Gil children). We ask that you provide both transportation and smiles forthis heartwarming experience.

BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAMDid you know that household batteries are responsible for 50 to 70% of all heavymaterial found in landfills? We are offering an easy way to help! Bring your old batteriesto the reception desk where a bin is available for proper disposal. A recycling businesswill extract 61% of the battery components: zinc, manganese, steel and even the paperand plastic on the outside jacket. These materials will be sent to manufacturers for reuse.

GARDEN PREVIEWWe’re starting a Garden! Check out the construction in process on the way intothe Wald Outdoor Chapel. Details to follow come Spring!
