Nouns are words for people, places or things. They can be concrete or things you can see, feel or touch. They can also be abstract things like ideas or emotions. Mr. Smith's Check To check to see if a word is a noun, ask yourself:

Does it complete the phrase “the _____”?

These will help the reader imagine what you are writing about. The pirates rode the vessel through the eerie fog. In clear patches, the waves glistened from the light of the full moon. Stolen gold coins and priceless jewels filled chests in the hull. The captain watched the water as sailors scrubbed and scoured the deck. Soon the crew would reach the rocky shore.
