Our Parish Vision Notre Dame of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic

community of faith called to be missionary disciples of Jesus Christ, for the purpose of bringing about the

Kingdom.

Our Parish Mission Formed by the Word, fed at the Table, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, we INVITE, WELCOME and GUIDE each

other into relationship with Christ, to GO OUT and MAKE missionary disciples.

NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, "Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God" (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Iaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation.

A S W H

While we continue to nurture our spirit of welcome and hospitality, let us be especially mindful that in this season of Advent and Christmas, our community will be hosting many people – relatives and friends of parishioners, folks we may not see regularly on the weekends, as well as visitors seeking a church to call home. All of them want to feel welcomed and included. To make that a reality, it will be

up to all of us to extend a sense of belonging to God’s family as we see that blessing so beautifully manifested in our ND spiritual space!

Join us as we intentionally seek out someone we may not know, introduce ourselves, offer room in our pew, invite back for a visit or a future event. What we do to extend that spirit could, in fact, be the very thing that launches an individual or a family into a journey of faith. Christ is sending them our way – let us respond by making their visit a positive and fruitful experience!

For The Journey...

MINISTRY CONNECTION

On Tuesday evening, November 28, ministry co-chairs Linda Baratte and Ann Bono created an exceptionally fruitful evening for the Lector Annual Meeting, which drew a good segment of the ministry. The gathering was a blend of inspiration, procedural reminders, and strong affirmation of these valued ministers. Newly recruited lectors were introduced and warmly welcomed by all, and there was a palpable sense of community throughout the evening. Importantly, lectors were reminded that their role was closely aligned with our parish Vision and Mission (“FORMED by the Word, FED at the table…etc.”).

The highlight of the evening was personal testimony given by Father Jhon. It combined scripture-based inspiration and the sharing of his own story of journeying as a young man from darkness into the light. It was appreciated by all as a reminder of the lector’s role in bringing Christ’s light to hearers of the Word.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR  WOMEN OF CHRIST ADVENT RETREAT

Over 55 participants came together for the “Chilled but Filled” Women’s Retreat offered last Saturday, Dec. 2nd. Ann McLoughlin and Patty Migliore-Torres led the participants through a journey of discovery and reflection on the lives of our Blessed Mother and other Marys in the history of our faith. The retreat was complemented by a guided meditation by Gail Mertz. In all, a wonderful morning of faith and fellowship!

Special thanks to Ministry Chair Kelli Schanz and all those who in any way collaborated to extend such a wonderful opportunity for women in our community to welcome the season of Advent!

Missionary Discipleship

we conducted our 4th Road to Emmaus retreat at St. Mary’s Abbey Retreat Center in Morristown.  It was a very powerful weekend as were the first 3 retreats.  Emmaus V is scheduled for October 5 –7, 2018.

We have also created an ongoing Men’s Group mee ng that meets on the 4th Saturday of each month, 8am—10am, in the Resource Rm. These mee ngs are open to all men of the parish (and in the community beyond) and provide a regular opportunity to gather for fellowship, personal sharing and conversa on on ma ers of faith.

Looking to the future, we will con nue to develop programs in‐house and to take advantage of exis ng programs beyond the parish to help men to deepen their faith and develop a more in mate rela onship with God.

As we see our Men’s ministry grow, we take no ce of a renewed spirit and culture; one where many par cipants are taking an interest in and even some responsibility for each other’s spiritual journey.  Men are invi ng other men to “Come and See” what it’s like to have a rela onship with God; to be willing to go deeper, to trust and surrender more, to assume leadership roles.  In short, we are seeing men mentoring other men and accompanying each other on the journey.  The change is subtle but unmistakable.  We believe that what is happening is the essence of being missionary disciples. †

For more informa on on our Men’s Ministry, please contact Ed Newlands at

[email protected], or Paul Cocco at [email protected]

We needed to create mul ple opportuni es for men to be in the company of other men and to be able to have these conversa ons—opportuni es that were numerous and flexible enough to fit any schedule, to

allow for the other demands and responsibili es of our busy lives.  We recognize that each spiritual journey is unique and has its own rhythm and pace.  We needed to create a culture in which men didn’t have to choose between their secular lives and their faith,

where it wasn’t an “either/or” choice but a “both/and.”

We also recognized that there are men in other places who were asking the same ques ons.  Thus, we have embarked on a  journey of collabora on with local parishes and faith organiza ons where par cipants are invited and welcomed to par cipate, regardless of parish affilia on.

For our part, we created a new retreat to build on and deepen the Cornerstone experience.  We call it The Road to Emmaus, as it is all about con nuing our spiritual journey.  In October 2017,

I n January, the men of our parish will conduct the 18th

itera on of Men’s Cornerstone.   For 18 years, this program has brought together men of all ages, and from all walks of life, for 26 hours to consider the ways God is ac ve in their lives.  They listened as other men, men just like them, shared their stories about their spiritual journey, grace, and reconcilia on.  They ate together,  prayed together and, in many cases, were transformed together.  One of the most consistent ques ons remained: “What’s next?”

Clearly, there is a deep hunger for many of these men to lead lives of significance, to deepen their rela onship with God, and to more closely follow the example of Jesus.  But there is very li le support for this kind of thinking in our culture, especially among men.

We asked ourselves, “What does it mean to be a man of faith in our  me?”  For that ma er, “What does it mean to be a man, a husband, father, brother, son, boss or employee?”  “How does our rela onship with God inform all the other roles we assume?”  And, from a more prac cal perspec ve, “Where can I go for help in sor ng through all these ques ons?”  The secular world certainly doesn’t offer many opportuni es for men to have these conversa ons.

We determined that what was needed was much more than another “event” as a follow‐up to Cornerstone.  We needed to meet men wherever they are and to welcome them into the quest for a connec on to their Creator without qualifica on or  prerequisite.
