The Alpha and the Omega – Part 4: The Fall Have you ever wondered why, given that Jesus came to reconcile us to God, to restore and renew all things, that He healed people, drove out demons, gave sight to the blind, made the paralytics walk again—if He did all these things, and this is Who He is, then why doesn’t He just fix everything that’s wrong with the world and each one of us now? Why does He permit all the bad things that happen in the world to continue? Why doesn’t the Lord just put us in paradise now?
Well, we tried that. God did put “us” in paradise. When He made Adam and Eve, he didn’t put them in a world full of hurt, brokenness and pain. He put them in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place where they had all they needed, nothing was wrong, and they both enjoyed God’s immediate presence.
You know what happened next. Evidently, God putting human beings in a world where everything is right is no guarantee that things are going to stay that way. Along with Adam and Eve, we fell from grace. Living in this fallen world, we have what we have: pain and suffering, sin and death, evil and rebellion against God. This is not to say that we know nothing good in this life. We do. We know we have received great gifts from God. Nor does it mean that we are totally depraved—if we were, we wouldn’t know what depravity was because we would have nothing with which to contrast it.
So we live in this world, which is far from perfect, but at the same time neither is it totally bad. Our relationship with God was impaired in the Fall, but it was not destroyed. We do not have immediate knowledge and access to the Father. Our knowledge of Him is not given to us through our five senses, nor through our intellect or reason. Our knowledge of God is given to us by His revelation of Himself. We have the choice either to accept Him on faith, or reject Him and live for however many years we have left in this world.
The Fall of Adam tainted everything. The entire universe, all of God’s creation is somehow dented, or twisted, or cracked and leaking because of the Fall of Adam. Things are not as they ought to be, and certainly not as God created them to be. Of course there is still great goodness and beauty in the created order. But as we all know, if we are honest with ourselves, there is something terribly wrong in the world.
We live in this world mixed with right and wrong, good and evil, sickness and health by the grace of God. Although we are fallen, He has most certainly not abandoned us. Genesis plainly tells us that it would not be good for God to leave Adam and Eve in their fallen state only for them to discover the Tree of Life and live forever fallen. Instead, our death and departure from this world are both the consequences of the Fall, and God’s mercy to us.
In His wisdom, God knows that our living in this fallen world with all its aches and pains, disappointments, and unfulfilled longings will prompt us to seek Him all the more. To be continued . . .

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Silent Lamp, The Thomas Merton Story by William H. Shannon is an excellent book about Thomas James Merton, a monk who lived in isolation for several years, and one of the most well-known Catholic writers of the twentieth century. Merton was a prolific poet, religious writer, and essayist whose diversity of work has rendered a precise definition of his life and an estimation of the significance of his difficult career. Merton was a Trappist, a member of a Roman Catholic brotherhood known for its austere lifestyle and vow of silence in which all conversation is forbidden. Merton's accomplishments as an author are even more remarkable considering that when he entered the Trappist monastery in Kentucky in 1941, monks were allowed to write only two half-page letters four times a year and nothing more. The author of Silent Lamp is Father William H. Shannon. He is an internationally known Merton Scholar and priest of the diocese of Rochester, New York. Fr. Shannon is general editor of more than 4,000 Merton letters and was the first president of the International Thomas Merton Society. “A brand new sort of book. Its unique format and an intimate approach to Merton’s personality make it a pleasure to read. The Merton Fr. Shannon writes about is one I find easy to recognize” Robert Lax, Poet and close friend of Thomas Merton. If you like reading about Merton and have not read Silent Lamp, please read this book. If you have not read a lot about Thomas Merton this would be an excellent book for you. Reviewed by Douglas Harris
