Loving God and Loving Your Neighbor – Part 3 of 3

Early in Matthew’s Gospel in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us that he has not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. It is Jesus himself who has fulfilled the Law. And that, according to Paul, means that it is Jesus who has loved God with His whole heart and loved his neighbors as Himself. We fail to keep the Lord’s commandments. But Jesus has kept them perfectly. And so when we do the work of God and believe in His Son whom he sent, who has fulfilled the Law by keeping God’s commandments perfectly, when we pick up our cross and follow Him, and die and rise with Him, we share in His fulfillment of the law, in His loving God with everything He’s got and in His loving neighbor as self. We are enabled to love God and our neighbor because we believe in Christ and because He first loved us. And yet it is these two commandments, upon which hang all the Law and the Prophets, that the Lord calls us to obey and keep every day and every moment of our lives. One of the most influential books I’ve read in my life is a book called “What Color Is Your Parachute?” by Richard Bolles, who happens to be an Episcopal priest. The book is about finding your mission in life, or you might say, about career choices. Bolles says that everyone has a mission in life that has three parts. Part one is establish or reestablish our relationship with God. The third part is to discern our particular gifts and talents and use them in a career that brings joy both to ourselves, others and to God. It’s the second part of our mission as Bolles sees it that applies to keeping the second great commandment. We can begin to love our neighbors as ourselves first by recognizing them as creatures and children of God, just like we are. Both we and our neighbors are created in the image and likeness of God. If we see others that way, we are on our way to loving them as the Lord commands. Secondly, being created in the image and likeness of God means that we are free to make choices, choices about all sorts of things, but especially about how we will behave and how we relate to others. Richard Bolles says we have many such moments of decision every day. When someone hurts us, or cuts us off on the highway, or interrupts us at our work, when we’ve sinned against someone, or when someone is kind to us – all of these are moments of decision about which way we will go. It’s as if we are standing at a crossroads. There are two ways before us. One way will lead to less gratitude, less kindness, less forgiveness, less honesty and generally less love in the world. And the other will lead to more gratitude, more forgiveness, more honesty, and generally more love in the world. Our mission, according to Bolles, which I believe is probably not much more than a rewording of Jesus’ second great commandment, is that we choose the latter rather than the former every time. If we can make that choice every time, and believe in Jesus Christ, there will be our evidence that we are loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves. And both we and God will know it’s true. Amen

(What Color Is Your Parachute?) 2017 Archbishop’s Appeal Prayer

Merciful God, You call us to be your disciples to proclaim the Good

News to all we meet. You sent us your Holy Spirit to guide us as we carry

out your sacred work. Help us to respond to your people in need through

the Archbishop’s Appeal, Use our ready hearts and our willing hands to show

them the face of your Son Jesus. Unite us as one in mind and heart as we work

together to build your kingdom. Bless us as shepherds of your good will and fill us

with your Spirit’s gifts. Help us to remember that, like Peter and Andrew,

James, John, Mary Magdalen, and like the mother of your Son Jesus,

we too are called to be your Disciples, Sent by the Spirit! Amen.

On behalf of Archbishop Gustavo and Father, we invite you and your family to serve our brothers and sisters through the Archbishop's Appeal. Your prayers and monetary gift to the 2017 Archbishop’s Appeal are essential in serving homeless children and mothers, bringing spiritual support to the hospitalized, forming young men for the priesthood and deaconate vocation, and preparing our families in the sacraments. If you have already responded to the Archbishop’s letter sent to your home, thank you! If you have not had an opportunity, we invite you to pray and consider how you and your family can make a gift to this year’s Appeal. Pledge cards, envelopes, and pencils are available in the pews (and or in the vestibule) of the Church. Once completed, place your Appeal pledge card in the offertory during Mass. Gifts can also be made online at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or over the phone with the Appeal Office at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your generosity.

Calling all friends of Notre Dame's St. Vincent de Paul. We are having a shopping cart round-up. About 4 carts recently have wondered off and need help finding their way home to Vinnie's Food Pantry. They are silvertone with blue seats and handles and have SVdP stamped on them. When we started 17-years-ago, we had 20. 2-years-ago, we had 17. Now we have 10 and will need to order more. We have checked nearby apartment complexes and ditches with no finds. If you spot one, please leave its location in a message to 830-896-6898. New ones will run around $165 each. The carts are needed to carry food from the pantry to cars in the parking lot. But if our neighbor is walking, it maybe is being used to carry the food home. The cart just needs returned immediately, not next month. Our next mobile food pantry is March 14 at Schreiner. That happens to be Spring Break for the University and KISD. Needless to say, we need extra help. It should be sunny and not too warm that time of year with a gentle breeze floating across the field. 10:30-12:30 for sorting and bagging and distributing. Wear a hat and bring sunscreen. Because of an increasing number of newcomers to the pantry, shelves were bear the Wednesday night before the next Food Bank delivery. That day Walmart retail rescue program had netted us 4 boxes of dinned can goods still usable. As fast as we unpacked, the pantry helpers were than bagging for the next person in line to get food. The rescued desserts lasted until the next to last neighbor. The last in line ask for a substitution of grits. We were able to oblige.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available

in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower

door.

Now that we are in ordinary time, albeit

briefly before the season of Lent and Easter, we

are taking Fr. David's suggestion to focus on the

Year of Grace. There will be several titles in the

Narthex that will address this beautiful theme.

Frequently Asked Questions about Christian

Meditation: The Path of Contemplative Prayer,

by Paul T. Harris. The title of this book asks for the attention

of the internet-savvy reader, who has delved into

FAQs, or “frequently asked questions” when

researching a new program or organization. It is

certainly a fresh approach to this subject by the

Canadian author for his fifth book on

contemplative prayer. He uses the Benedictine

monk John Main as the pre-eminent authority,

though there are extensive summaries from other

mystics – the index gives 150 different names.

The 56 questions are an effective or-

ganizing principle, and the breakdown into

individually-titled subjects makes it even more a

book that can be devoured one bite at a time. For

instance, Question 20, concerning not having the

time to meditate, includes a sub-section with this

advice:

“There’s a saying that meditators have 25-hour

days. The hour we devote to silence and stillness in

prayer is returned to us in the form of spiritual

energy and vitality in our daily life.” And the

answer to Question 13:

“Should I feel guilty if I miss one of my daily

meditation periods?” begins with this sage advice:

“The only thing to feel guilty about is feeling

guilty! There is enough religious guilt among

Christians without adding to the burden of guilt.”
