SAGNIAW HERITAGE INVITE

BOYS SWIMMING CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

The Notre Dame Prep Fighting Irish Boys Swimming is riding a serious wave. Tuesday night’s victory over Auburn Hills Avondale was their fourth in a row, moving the team’s record to 5-2 on the year. Career best times were turned in up and down the Irish lineup. Highlights came from Peter McNelis in the 200 IM as he set a school record time of 2:16.67, Ben Lytle coming from behind to steal points for the team in the 100 backstroke, and Dominic Tatum, Matt LaMothe, and JP Stapleton sweeping the 500 freestyle to seal the victory for NDP. The Irish swim again next Tuesday at Hazel Park.

WARRIORS PIN IRISH WRESTLING IN DUAL MEET

On Wednesday the Fighting Irish traveled down to Lutheran Westland High School for a dual meet. NDP wrestled tough and continued to show improvement but again failed to clinch a win, dropping the dual 52-21. Individual winners for Notre Dame were Brenden Fraser, Josh Stanczak (by pin), Joey Agro (by pin), and Stephen Romero. The Irish hope to turn their losing streak of late around this weekend when they host the first ever Fighting Irish Duals featuring 6 teams that should provide a solid day of wrestling.

GIRLS BASKETBALL SWEEPS HOME TRIPLE-HEADER

It was a successful night for all 3 NDP Girls Basketball teams as they took to the court for a home triple-header. The Freshman Girls began the evening by defeating Almont 27-22 to improve their record to 6-3 in 2014-15. Destiney Sandle barely missed a double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds and Maddie Scherle also led the Irish offense with 8 points. The JV team followed up with a 33-25 win over Allen Park Cabrini to jump over the .500 mark on the year at 4-3. Nadia Burbank (11 points) and Gretel Keller (10 points) set the pace for Notre Dame. The Varsity Girls completed the triple-header sweep with a thrilling 27-25 victory over Cabrini in CHSL league play. Megan Kraus had 8 points for the Irish and Katie Swartz had 5 of her own to help the Irish hold on for the win.

MARIST GREEN TEAM STAYS UNBEATEN IN CYO PLAY

The Marist Green Basketball team defeated Everest Academy 32-17 to remain unbeaten in league play. Ethan Johnson led all scorers with 17 points while Josh Edmonds added 5 points along with tough, tenacious defense. The Irish will head to The Academy of Sacred Heart and St. Stephen for a pair of non-league games this weekend.

EVEREST CLIMBS OVER GIRLS 7/8 GRADE TEAM

The Irish Girls 7/8 Basketball team fell to 2-2 on the season, losing 26-12 to Everest Academy. Mary Bonema led the way with 5 points, and Julia Mistretta notched 4. The Irish played the game with only 5 players. “Despite the score, I thought we played well. We missed some good looks, but playing with no substitutes is very difficult to do, especially against a full court press” said Coach Fields. “We just ran out of gas in the second half. I am happy with our effort.”

EVEREST TOPS 5/6 GIRLS

The Marist 5/6 Girls lost a tough game to league rival Everest Academy, 21-14 as they played a fantastic overall game on both ends of the floor but the shots just were not falling. The girls now sit at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in CYO league play. Ingrid Keller (4 points), Kendall Lance (4 ), Lexi Fraser (2), Abby Stowe (2) and Carissa Hodges (2) led the way in scoring. The 5/6 team will look to get back to their winning ways this Saturday at Lakes.

VARSITY BASKETBALL OPENS CHSL PLAY WITH COMEBACK

WIN OVER FOLEY

Notre Dame Prep opened up its 2014-15 CHSL schedule with an impressive come from behind 57-54 win over Bishop Foley. The Irish used a 13-0 scoring run late in the 3rd quarter to take the lead heading into the final frame and Zach Shango hit a huge 3-point shot to put the Irish up with 1:45 to play, a lead that they would not relinquish. “It’s a huge win for us to get,” Notre Dame Prep coach Whitney Robinson said. “You always want to start conference play with a win, and to get one on the road against Foley who has beaten us at their place the last two years, it’s nice. We beat a good team today.” Shango (11 points) and Sophomore Tariq Derrickson (25 points) led the way for NDP. “Needless to say, Tariq was phenomenal for us tonight,” Robinson said of Derrickson. “He’s a great player, and he lives for games like this. He’d rather be in a game like tonight’s, with every possession meaning something, than in a 20-point blowout.” The Irish are back in action tonight as they take on CHSL rival Divine Child.

Freshman defensemen Matt Knill and Tommy Below each chipped in an assist for the Irish and Michael Conroy turned aside 26 shots.
