Welcome to Country We respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional custodians of this land we are meeting on , the Bindjareb and people. It is a privilege to be competing in Bibbulmun country. Welcome from the Mayor of the City of Mandurah I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Mandurah to all King of the Cut competitors. This exciting event will showcase our city’s amazing waterways and coastline to local, national and international visitors, and we hope you are able to enjoy more of what Mandurah has to offer while you’re here. Good luck to all the competitors, and I’d encourage everyone to get down to the beach and show their support for King of the Cut. Mayor Rhys Williams Welcome from the Mayor of the City of Rockingham We are delighted to welcome back King of The Cut in 2019 and it is fantastic to see so many people participating in this iconic event. Our city is home to 37 km of pristine coastline and is blessed with ideal downwind conditions that make Rockingham one of the best places in Australia for water sports. There’s plenty to do here so once your race is finished I encourage you to hang around and rediscover Rockingham. We have award winning restaurants, bars and cafes and the iconic Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is only a few minutes down the road. Whatever you decide to do we’re sure you’ll soon understand why Rockingham is known as the place where the coast comes to life. Regards, Mayor Barry Sammels

Mandatory Safety Equipment Safety equipment is mandatory for all competitors and will be checked at Registration. SUP

• PFD Type 1 (including inflatable type 1 with Level 100 or greater 150, 275) or Type 2 PFD (Level 50). PFDs can be from outside Australia as long as they comply to the minimum floatation level described for Personal flotation device standard here: https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/life-jackets.asp. PFD Type 3 are not acceptable.

• Orange smoke flare

• Leg rope in good condition

Prone Paddleboards

• Leg rope in good condition OC

• As per AOCRA rules

• Non-inflating PFD Type 1 or Type 2 PFD to be worn.

• Covers for OC6 Competitor Safety Tracking At Registration all competitors will be issued with a wrist band that must be worn until after the finish of the race. At registration all competitors will be issued with, and required to carry during the race, a small Track Me Live tracking unit. The trackers are GPS units which use satellites to locate competitors’ position then send this information to a live map on the web using the mobile phone network. This enables the race organisers to see your position on the course in real time. The trackers have an SOS function for emergency situations where any competitor needs assistance from the safety boats. To activate the SOS function press and hold the large button on the front of the tracker for approximately 3 seconds until you feel a small vibration which means the SOS feature has been activated. The tracker will already be turned on, so no need to do anything but secure it to yourself. The trackers are in waterproof bags with no strings or ties. They will be best placed either in a pocket or taped to a shoulder strap - there are some suggestions in the photos below.

Page 7: Notice of Race - supwa.com.ausupwa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/KOTC_Notice-of-Race_17N… · The 2019 King of The Cut (KOTC) has a two-day window to select the optimal conditions

Things to remember are:

• The trackers need access to phone signal so don’t bury them deep.

• The SOS button on each tracker will alert the safety crew if you need assistance while paddling so make sure you can get to it!

• They’re costly, so PLEASE don’t lose it!

• There will be tape at the registration desk if you want to tape the tracker to a shoulder strap (preferred option signal and ease of SOS operation)

• At the end of the race, please don’t leave the finish area until you’ve returned your tracker. If you lose or fail to return your tracker we will expect you to pay for it.

Page 9: Notice of Race - supwa.com.ausupwa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/KOTC_Notice-of-Race_17N… · The 2019 King of The Cut (KOTC) has a two-day window to select the optimal conditions

The start line will be between two buoys with the starting boat anchored one third to windward up the line, making a short and long start line.

There will be two starts with the approximate start times being:

1330 Race Start KOTC24 and KOTC12, all SUPs and prone paddle boards

1340 Race Start KOTC24 and KOTC12, foil boards, wing foils and OCs classes

Starting Sequence

• 1 minute warning: multiple whistles – green flag goes up. Competitors must be sitting or kneeling once the 1 minute warning sounds. Competitors must remain one board/boat length behind the line.

• Approximately 10 seconds to go: The starter calls “racers to the line”. SUP competitors may stand up.

• Start: 1 long horn – green flag comes down. The start can occur any time within 10 seconds after the call of ‘racers to the line’ when the starter can see a good and fair line is formed.

Competitors bodies, or the forward-most paddler of an OC, must stay behind the line until the start. If your body is in front of the line at the start you will be penalised 2 minutes. The start will be filmed.

On the Course • A lead boat, clearly identified by Stand Up Surf Shop flags, will make a direct course

from the start to the finish of the KOTC24 at Secret Harbour.

• KOTC24 competitors who have not reached Roberts Point (Doddies Beach, Halls Head) within 1 hr and 30 minutes from their start time will be directed to go ashore to Doddies Beach (see the map below), the finish point of the KOTC12, and will not be permitted to continue the race.

Page 10: Notice of Race - supwa.com.ausupwa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/KOTC_Notice-of-Race_17N… · The 2019 King of The Cut (KOTC) has a two-day window to select the optimal conditions

• For safety and logistical reasons, there is a 3 hour 30 minute overall cut-off time for KOTC24 competitors to finish at Secret Harbour. Competitors must follow safety staff directions and competitors will be pulled from the water or directed to shore if outside this time limit.

• A sweeper boat will remain behind the final paddler at all times.

• Other safety boats will be on the course, including a high-speed jet ski. All safety boats are in contact with the race and safety organisers ashore.

• In the event a competitor is injured or is retiring from the race; o If able to, paddle to shore and activate the Track Me Live tracker SOS button. A

recovery vehicle will be directed to your location and will convey competitors and equipment back to Secret Harbour.

o If unable to paddle to shore, a competitor who is in distress or in an emergency situation should activate the Track Me Live tracker SOS button and then remain with their board. Emergency assistance will be directed from the shore and the closest safety vessel will be directed to the competitor’s location.

o Competitors in distress should remain seated on the board and assist visual location by waving one hand or paddle in the air.

o It is the duty of the closest competitor to render assistance to any competitor that indicates that they require assistance.

o In the event competitors are unable to draw the attention or safety vessels, let off you smoke flare as a last resort and, ideally, when a safety vessel is within 200 metres.

• In the event a shark sighting, the closest safety vessel will monitor the shark and shadow its position with respect to competitors, keeping the vessel between the shark and the competitor. In the unlikely event that a shark becomes aggressive or remains in the area carry out the following;

o Sit down on your board to lower your centre of gravity o Activate your Track Me Live tracker SOS button o Get the attention of the closest competitor and place your upright hand on your

head indicating a fin. Try to raft up together and wait until the shark moves on.

• Please be aware of reef breaks along the course, particularly east of the start location and at the finish line of the KOTC12.
