ARCC NEWS ABBEY ROAD CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) Volume 44, Issue 34 August 21, 2019 Notes from the Road My school is celebrating its 125 th anniversary this year with the theme, “Grateful for What Is to Come.” That may puzzle at first; we’re used to finding grati- tude for what has happened. But how can we be grateful for what is not-yet in the may -be of the future? Nevertheless, it is a state familiar to people of faith. Goodness and mercy have followed us through the days of our lives, we are at a table where cups overflow, and we trust that, in what is to come, all shall be well. I have watched, counseled, and cheered as you and your search committee have taken the steps of a substantial process. Committee members were prayerfully appointed and accepted their responsibilities. Your Regional Minister, the Rev. Dr. Penny Ross-Corona, oriented them and charged them with weighty tasks. On paper and in person, you surveyed yourselves about your understandings of the call of this congregation and qualities to seek in a servant-leader. Your answers were distilled into a lengthy congregational profile that was provided to candidates. The committee read and discussed many pages of minister’s profiles. They watched hours of sermon vid- eos. They conducted long interviews, by telephone and then in person. They held all this in prayer. Now they have come to a recommendation of someone to install in min- istry with Abbey Road Christian Church. Now it is time for your discernment. Your candidate will be here this weekend for you to meet, touch and hear. You will have a congregational meeting to receive the recommendation and vote upon it. I can’t see the future. But I trust what your search committee and you have done. I see that you have done well. So I am grateful for what is to come. What I’m listening to: with thanks to David Dickey for the point-out, Molly Tut- tle’s “Take the Journey” ( https://youtu.be/ADiwd_AjjEA ). Wow, this gal can pick. Watch her right hand while her words are sinking in; they are as rousing a call to our Call as I’ve heard in awhile. Doug We don’t need a crystal ball to foresee that this Sunday after worship may be a bit bus- tling. But the Green Room Sunday School class still hopes to gather. Notes from the Road My school is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year with the theme, “Grateful for What Is to Come.” That may puzzle at first; we’re used to finding grati-tude for what has happened. But how can we be grateful for what is not-yet in the may-be of the future?

We don’t need a crystal ball to foresee that this Sunday after worship may be a bit bus-tling. But the Green Room Sunday School class still hopes to gather. We’re reading chapter 4 of The Women in the Gospel of John: The Divine Feminine, in which we’ll grieve with Mary and Martha upon their loss of their brother Lazarus—and puzzle about Je-sus’ apparent unconcern.

Season of Creation in September In September 2017, Abbey Road Christian Church celebrated its first “Season of Crea-tion.” We decorated the sanctuary to evoke the earth and cosmos, and spent five Sun-days in grateful awe of our Creator’s gifts to us. Again this year we’ll take part in this world-wide movement to give thanks for and consider our care of creation. We look forward to:

Ocean Sunday on September 1, David Dickey preaching

Fauna & Flora Sunday on September 8, Mary Ann Heinsman preaching

Storm Sunday on September 15, Karen Piker preaching

Cosmos Sunday on September 22, David Dickey preaching

Blessing of the Animals Sunday on September 29, Doug Job preaching

Also, at noon on Tuesday, September 10, we’ll host a Green Chalice webinar on go-ing carbon-neutral in our church theater. On September 23, we’ll celebrate the Fall Equinox in the Labyrinth with prayers and a walk. Watch our newsletter for more infor-mation about these green gatherings!

Note from the Search Committee

We’d like to share some additional information about our pastoral candidate with you. She at-tended Pacific School of Religion where she obtained her M.Div. degree and was subsequently ordained into ministry by the Disciples of Christ. She has been in the DOC ministry for 32 years. She has served in a variety of types of congregations over the years, having done transitional/interim ministry for the past several years. We have found her to have a warm and welcoming personality, to be a compassionate and empathetic person, and to have a great sense of humor. Her spiritual practices consist of prayer, scripture reading, study, meditation, breath and centering prayer, loving-kindness and mindfulness meditation, labyrinth walking, creating sacred space, and weav-ing. She believes in and practices collaborative leadership and encourages lay participation in all areas. She sees herself not as a manager, but as a leader. She believes that change comes organically from within the congregation, not imposed by the minister. She may make suggestions, and she is a creative person who thinks outside the box, so we look forward to ideas and suggestions that she may have, but she said if there is not congregational interest in her ideas she would not pursue them. She loves worship and seeing a group develop and strengthen community. She feels called to journey toward healing with those who suffer the effects of trauma and shame, and she believes that shaming and bullying cannot be tolerated in the church. She states, “Another area of ministry which has begun tugging at my spirit is end of life ministries,” and she will begin end of life doula training this fall. She also states, “I thrive in congregations where diversity is celebrated and folk with a broad spectrum of ideas may share lovingly in worship, build deep friendships, explore scripture, and where all are warmly celebrated at Christ’s table.” She strongly believes that we may embrace our differences and dis-agree with respect and love. Her hobbies include historical reenactment, glass art and metal clay jewelry making, growing food, foraging for edible plants, reading, and spending time with family and pets. She is a dog lover, but enjoys all animals and nature. We, the pastoral search committee, believe that the candidate we will present to the congrega-tion this weekend is a very good fit for ARCC! Search Committee Members:

Karen Piker, Chair; Judy Cureton, David Dickey, Marge Main, Anne McDonough, Leslee Pollina

A “meet & greet” reception for the candidate will be held on Saturday, August 24, 3:00-5:00pm at the church. We hope you will take this opportunity to meet our candidate. She will bring the message on Sun-day, August 25. Immediately following worship service, a Congregational Meeting will be held for the pur-pose of receiving the nomination of the Search Committee for this candidate for Settled Pastor.

Quilt Display this Sunday

This Sunday, August 25, the quilts which have been prepared for Backpacks for Youth will be on dis-play in the sanctuary on both the north and south sides. This year we have 10 quilts to send to Festival of Sharing. This number is greater than usual because Leslee Pollina contributed 5 completed quilts that she had made. Over the winter months I assembled 5 quilt tops from my stash of quilt scraps. Several ladies met in the “former green room” on July 23 to tie the 5 quilt tops I had made. After I trimmed the quilts and attached the bindings, others stitched down the bindings by hand. The people involved in either the ty-ing or binding (and some did both) are Lavetta Bratton, Linda Burns, Deanna Easley, Felicia Fox, Leslee Pollina, Anne McDonough, Carolyn Taylor, Glenda Zink, Jamie Koehler, Linda Hill, Edna Ruth Fischer, and Joetta Giles.

I hope you take time to look at these creations. And I want to say again, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, to everyone who helped. You are appreciated!

Thanks,

Darla Snider

Painted Lady leave Never heard of “Painted Lady” leave? Good; we just made it up. Our board of elders has kindly granted Doug Job a month of leave so he and Angela can complete the exterior painting of their house in Athens, Georgia. They’re turning it into a teal, raspberry and grey Painted Lady. Doug will be away from Monday, August 26 to Tuesday, September 24. Our elders and Associate Minister David Dickey will be available for pastoral care. Please contact chair Steven Piker ([email protected] and 573-380-2218) if needs arise.
