Notes from Fr. John St. Kieran Catholic Church Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 16, 2020 What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. — 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 T oday we celebrate the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today our first reading gives us a choice. Will we choose life or death. We are told that God doesn’t lead people into sin, rather it is our own choice or doing that makes us sin. So, wisdom is following God’s law. In the Gospel Jesus goes even farther and tells us that the law of Moses was good and should be followed, but as followers of Jesus we should take it even farther. Our simple acts can be light or darkness in our world. Hate hurt and anger can kill a soul as easily as a bullet or sword. Jesus also reminds us that relationships are sacred and should be guarded with the greatest care. These are tough teachings and we are called to take them to heart. Next Sunday all parishes of the Archdiocese will begin the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. The Appeal was begun by Cardinal Bernadin to help parishes and schools who struggle financially, deal with natural disasters through Catholic Relief Services, as well as provide needed training for lay and ordained ministers in the Church. Each parish was given a goal based 6% of their yearly income. As a parish we have always come in at the goal or just below. I want to thank you for your generosity. This year we have good and bad news about our goals. The Archdiocese has lowered the goal of poor parishes so that they can reach their goals. It has raised the goal of those who are not struggling as much. Well both St. Agnes and St. Kieran are not considered poor, so that is the good news. The bad news is our goals increased because they raised the percentage to 7%. I guess for me what is important is that we continue to help those in need beyond our parish boundaries. So once again thank you for your generous support over all these years. If you have given before you will have received information about the appeal in your home. You may send in your donation if you wish, all I ask is that you make sure the parish name is included in that you make sure the parish name is included in your pledge card. Either St. Agnes or St. Kieran. That way the parish gets credit for your contribu- tion. Next weekend Fr. Tom and I will be speaking at both parishes along with an announcement from Cardinal Cupich. More information to come. Last weekend we heard from the Women’s Welcome Weekend. They spoke about how just one decision, one day can change our lives. Over the years as a priest I have heard people speak of conversion experiences they had when they went on pilgrimages to Christian holy sites. Travelers to Fatima, Lourdes, the Holy Land, or Rome tell of how God touched their hearts on these trips. I often remind people that maybe it wasn’t the trip as much as the time you gave to your faith. If we took a week out of our lives and went to a retreat house in Mokena or Chicago, I believe people will experi- ence the same conversion. It is about taking time that matters and not the place. So, I encourage all the women of the parishes to consider making the time for the Welcome Retreat Weekend. It is two days, a Saturday and a Sunday that might just change your lives. It is a lot cheaper than a trip half- way around the world. God will be here waiting for you. Finally, just a quick note about the impor- tance of the upcoming United States Census. Our representation in Congress is based on Census figures. You pay taxes and how funds and grants are distributed in our local communities is based on our census numbers. Everyone needs to be counted. If you want good roads and sewers, fill out your census forms when they come in March. We are not only citizens of the City of God, we are part of a human community here on earth and we need to work together to make our country, states and communities better. More information will be coming in the next few weeks.

2020 Annual Catholic Appeal

Come, follow me… and heal our world

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you will receive when the bulletins are passed out at the end of Mass. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus” call to “Come, follow me . . . and heal the world.”

Once we reach our parish goal of $23,372 in paid pledges, any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.
