Not A Burst Of Fun
In the year 2015 I had my appendix surgery. It was not the most exciting thing I’ve
ever done in my life, but now I know that I never have to do it again! Many people have their
appendix out; mine was a unique one though. It was crazy!
On February 6th my stomach started hurting and I felt like vomiting. It felt like a
normal stomach bug. But it became worse and worse as the days went on. I stayed either in
bed or in the bathroom. I took naps, watched movies and played on my iPod. I couldn’t eat
that much. I could occasionally eat applesauce and saltine crackers. My mom gave me
pedialyte often, which I am not too fond of, to help my stomach and fever. On Tuesday the
10th , right when my dad got home, my appendix burst. But we did not know. So, my stomach
started feeling even worse, it was hard for me to sleep at night. I took medicine for pain and
to get my fever down. My dad aired up our air mattress and my mom put in my bedroom floor
and she slept on that. Through out this whole time my mom kept on calling the doctors and
they kept saying that it was just a stomach bug. They wanted me to come in to the office if it
didn’t get better over the weekend.
On Valentines Day I was still sick, my grandparents had come by and gave me a white,
fluffy teddy bear with a red heart on it. My breathing numbers were down so my parents
decided to take me to the Cook Children’s Urgent Care Center in Mansfield. It was about 5:30
p. m. or so when we got there. A few minutes after being signed in I was taken back and was
asked questions like, “What’s going on?”, “How long has this been happening?” and so on. I
was weighed and measured and then taken back to a patient room. The doctor came in and
talked with my parents and me and then went out and talked to other nurses and doctors.
They could not help me. I had to go to the Cook Children’s ER in Fort Worth. I waited in the
waiting room for a while then was taken to a room in the ER. I had X-Rays and a sonogram.
They gave me an IV and I had to change into a hospital gown. After waiting for three hours
they came in. Emergency surgery, that’s all I remember. I had never had surgery before.
At 1:30-2:00 A.M. I was out of my first surgery. During the surgery my grandparents
came up and sat with my parents in the waiting room. My brother was at their house with my
uncle. Right after I was done my grandparents left. I felt groggy and wanted to go back to
sleep. One of my night nurses took me to my new room. I had never had a night nurse before.
I went to sleep with my parents in the room. All through out the night I was woken up by the
nurse to see if I needed pain medicine or if the machine was beeping. The next day all of my
family came over. They brought cards, balloons, and candy. I received flowers from my dance
studio and some of my friends even came and brought me presents. I got get-well cards and
valentines cards. I collected more and more stuffed animals every day. Almost every day I had
a visitor. We went in the playroom and played foosball, made crafts, played videogames, and
played with my little cousin with the cars. I could ride down stairs and get some food. I also
got ‘room service’! I was in the hospital for eleven days. I was strong enough to go down to
the gift shop and make a Build-A-Bear in Build-A-Bear Workshop. Finally I got the news, “You
are free to go home!”. The only problem was it became icy over the night before. Some how I
made it home with my mom and dad.
I had two weeks of recovery at home and observing my dance class instead of
participating. I also had take two different, strong antibiotics to kill off any more infection.
After spring break I was back in dance! I learned everything I had missed and performed in
my recital. I am glad I do not have to do it again! I’m thankful for everyone who came to visit
me through that time. It definitely was NOT a burst of fun!
