Dr. Vern Middleton is a Northwest alumnus (B.Div. 1963) and Professor Emeritus of Missions and Evangelism at Northwest@ACTS. We took this opportunity to connect with him and listen to his contin-ued heartbeat for global missions and for Northwest Alumni.

Vern, you have had a long and rich history here at Northwest. What year did you start teaching here? What were the highlights of your years at Northwest?

I started teaching at Northwest in August of 1976. Our family returned from India in July of that year, after serv-ing 12 years there and I joined the faculty of Northwest in August.

The years 1976 – 80 were an exciting period in the his-tory of Northwest. The synergism among the faculty, the quality of the students and the vision of Dr. Howard Anderson created a very dynamic environment in which to teach.

The 1980s was a decade of transition – in terms of loca-tion – in terms of a new vision for the creation of ACTS at Trinity Western University – in terms of my own aca-demic development and the discipline of Ph.D. studies.

Two developments at Northwest over almost three dec-ades of ministry brought great satisfaction. One was the steady stream of young men and women who graduated from Northwest with a strong determination to serve the

Lord in pastoral ministry or to serve in some missionary endeavour. What I found especially rewarding was the fact that the number of people who became ministry or missionary casualties was significantly lower from Northwest than from other Bible Colleges and Seminaries. The second factor was the large number of stu-dents who became church planters. Northwest has produced several outstanding church planters who have each planted 5 to 15 churches during their ministry life-span.

What does "retirement" consist of for you? Tell us a little about what gets this missiologist up in the morning! We hear snippets of an India connection!

Retirement is still very full of meaningful activity and ministry. I continue to serve on four mission boards. FEBInternational is our denominational mission board and I am on the executive of that board. CityTeam is based in San Jose but is global in its scope and involvement. I am energized by their vision and their creativ-ity. Missionsfest is a third mission board I serve on and I am on the telephone with the director at least once a week. I also serve on the IMTB [India Missionary Training Board] that raises funds for ministries in India. I just returned from my third trip to India in less than one year as my heart and love for that country and her peoples highly motivates me.

Since retirement I have gone high tech – in that I have purchased a lap top and an LCD projector. I have been engaged in transforming my old course notes into Power Point presentations. In the meantime the Lord has opened up several doors of opportunity to teach in places like YCLT, Yavatmal, a missionary training college in India, the Katmandu Institute of Theology, which is a graduate school in Nepal, and Union Biblical Seminary in Pune, India. The only restraint upon me for these ministries is a need for funds to travel which amounts to $2500 per round trip.

The Lord continues to provide Helen and me with good health - so as the Lord gives us days so we want to use them for the ex-tension of His Kingdom. This is what gets us up in the morning. By the way I also serve on the leadership team of our local church and I have the privilege of being a volunteer pastor.

As well, I am involved as a World Perspectives teacher. These opportunities give me much joy and satisfaction.

Still another involvement is with Northwest Alumni – I have the delight of regular contact with numerous alumni both on a formal and informal basis. I also have e-mail contact with fifteen Northwest alumni serving in various countries of the world.

As you look back on your years of teaching in missions and evangelism, and your involvement with Northwest students and alumni - how would you evaluate North-west's impact on the Kingdom of God? How have Northwest Alumni contributed in terms of vision, mobilization, cultural transformation, of understanding and grappling with the missiological issues of the day—in terms of simply taking the Gospel of Je-sus Christ to the ends of the earth?

It is hard to answer these questions in general statements so I will cite various alumni who have made significant contributions to the kingdom of God. First, in terms of vision, Carlos San Lui (Master of Ministry 1988) began the first Filipino evangelical Baptist church in greater Vancouver. Within a year he started a second church in Surrey and while planting that church, he traveled every Sunday down to Seattle to start another church. By 1983 he moved to Portland and planted three churches in that city, then he moved to the Oakland-Bay area and started three churches there. Next he moved to the Fresno – Sacramento area and started two churches there. In the early 1990s he moved to Orlando, Florida and again started several churches there when his life was taken through a terrible accident. He had a vision to plant Filipino churches in every city in North America.

In terms of mobilization, Dan Chapman (1967) has been a catalytic agent in the lives of numerous young couples who have become our church plant-ers and kingdom builders in new communities throughout BC.

In terms of cultural transformation, Rod (1979,81,96) and Donna (1979) Black come to mind as innovative people in the area of ethnomusicology and the use of ethnic music forms as a medium of entrance into the hearts and minds of people groups hardened to traditional patterns of evangelism. They will be returning to Asia this Spring and will begin to develop whole new patterns of sharing Christ. Don (1965) and Georgia Rendle and now Sharon were powerful change agents for Christ in many countries of Latin America. Certainly their ministries have made a major kingdom impact on patterns of justice, understanding of penal institutions and making a direct impact on hundreds of political prisoners with the transforming love of Christ. Don’s son Geordan (1984) has followed in his parent’s footsteps and is being used of God in many Latin American countries.

In terms of grappling with missiological issues, Mark Naylor (1984) and his e-mail publication “Cross-cultural Impact in the 21st Century” [see www.nbseminary.com for previous issues] is certainly provocative. Another grad who is making a mark in this area is Chuck Fletcher (1991) at McGill.

Finally in terms of taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth it would take several pages to mention all who are worthy for this category. I have many pictures of graduating students from Northwest who now serve in remarkably diverse places around the world. Perhaps one whole Alumni publication could be dedicated to featuring our grads in Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, Nepal, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Philippines, Maldives, Poland, Thailand, etc.

We are now well into the first decade of the 21st century. What issues and opportunities do you see the church facing today and in the days ahead? - What challenge would you place before Northwest Alumni? - How would you challenge Northwest@ACTS?

It seems to me that the intensity of the battle for the Kingdom of God has greatly increased in recent years. Certainly our Lord is very active in shaking the physical realms and the spiritual realms as predicted in Haggai 2:6,7 and Hebrews 12:26-29. Globalization is having a positive impact for the Gospel – but it also introduces a lot of sinful ideas to the worldwide market. What amazes me is the economic prosperity emerging in Asia and a few parts of Africa. A new population of middle class citizens is rapidly emerging in India, Malaysia, China, Korea, and the Philippines. These globalized peoples all speak English and are very much aware of the Judeo-Christian worldview. If I had the gift of prophesy I would predict the possibility of a great spiritual harvest among the millions of middle class entrepreneurs.

In your years with Northwest you have taught in both the college and seminary. What would you say to an alumna or alumnus who was con-sidering enrolling at Northwest@ACTS in a masters or doctoral level program?

The faculty and administrators at Northwest are highly qualified in their respective areas of ministry. They combine excellence with caring, relational support and encouragement for all of the students of Northwest. These factors combined with good scholarship assistance and a support plan for those involved in our churches makes Northwest@ ACTS an unbeatable place in which to study.

1970s

Rod Wilkinson (Bachelor of Theology 1972) After graduating in 1972 with the B.Th. degree, I served as church planting pastor of Aldergrove Baptist (’70-79) and senior pastor of Ruth Morton Fellowship Baptist Church (’82-’90). When not a full time pastor, I have supported myself with my trade (plumbing/gas fitting) while serving in various pastoral roles. Since 1990 I have been a City of Vancouver Inspector. With retirement from the COV approaching, we are waiting on the Lord for his direction.

Joan and I live in Vancouver. Joan has worked for a number of years as an MOA in various medical fields. Our four married children have presented us with eleven grandchildren. Truly, the Lord has blessed us!

1980s

Dwight Geiger (Bachelor of Theology 1980) We have been working in our Fellowship Baptist Churches ever since graduation from Northwest. Fort McMurray, Ladysmith, Armstrong, Port Hardy and finally Sooke at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. I have officially been in pastoral ministry for 21 years and we have been here in Sooke for ten of those years as the pastor of a small church that is growing into a medium sized church. The new building was completed 2 years ago.

Sandra and I have three children: Stephen is now almost 26 and is currently working as the Events Coordinator at Camp Qwanoes on Vancouver Island. Sarah is 24 and married to Rob Lacey. She has completed her BA in History and will be taking her final year of Education at Simon Fraser. They live in Tsawwassen. Our youngest, Matthew, is 16 and still at home working on his Grade 10. We are very proud of all of our children. I have changed in many ways as God has walked me through the pastoral life with a variety of challenges in the rural church setting. Sooke has been the greatest challenge as I discover a people who are traditional but very post-modern all at the same time. Innovation has been a key element in the ministry at Sooke. I have also been challenged as I help Camp Qwanoes on the Board of Directors with all the growth that has been taking place there. At Sandra's insistence I have taken up model railroading in N scale in order to have a relaxing hobby.

Robert Marsh (u 1980)

Our daughters Kim Dyck & Kelly Marsh reside in Richmond and Burnaby respectively. Gael and I presently have two grandsons. Gael and I have served as pastor and wife for the past six years at Fairview Baptist Church in Calgary. The congregation has been in existence for more than forty years. The demographics of our congregation has been fifty-five plus. We have recently voted to approve an associate pastor of family ministries,l

Chris Naylor (Licentiate in Theology 1964) In 1996 I was retired by Baptist Housing from my

chaplaincy position in Victoria, but I did not retire! I am a chaplain-at-large visiting hospitals, care facilities and homes from Victoria to Sidney. I do hold a service in Victoria's Mount St. Mary's care facility once a month and for the past 6 years I have taken their Remembrance Day service. Also I care for the seniors of our church, Centennial Fellowship Baptist. The rest of the time I enjoy gardening and caring for our home in the Brentwood Bay area as well as enjoying our family. David, Mark, Tim and April all passed through N.B.T.C. Mark (Karen) brought our three oldest grandchildren back from Pakistan for us to get to know. They live close to us in Brentwood. April (Norm) lives in Surrey and also have three children that we often travel "overseas" to fuss over. David (Kathy) also lives in Surrey while Tim lives in Burnaby. The greatest supporter and joy of my life is my dear Lois. We count it a privilege to serve our Lord together. We will be celebrating our 50th this year.

Dan Chapman (Diploma in Theology 1967) & Judy Chapman [nee Bretherick] (Bachelor of Religious Education 1968) Judy and I have been serving the Fellowship Baptist Churches since the summer of 1967. The first three years we pastored in Cobble Hill, BC. The next ten years we served as church planters in Colombia with FEBInternational. We returned to B.C. to plant two churches over the next fourteen years. Over the last ten years we have had the privilege of giving direction to church planting and ethnic ministries for the B.C. Region. Our three sons are serving the Lord. Brent is pastor at Southridge in Langley, along with his wife Pam. Todd is pastor at Smithers Baptist, along with his wife Karen. Gary (and soon to be his wife, Louise) is teaching high school in Surrey. We have 7 terrific grand children!

I try to make my Christian faith the central part of everything I am and do. I am very interested in seeing that my faith impacts areas of social justice, and carries the message of the gospel of Jesus into the workplace. My family is a joy in my life. With my wife Heather, we home school our children. Our lives revolve around our faith, scouting, pony club, swimming, drama, art and music.

Brian Rapske (Master of Divinity 1983 [attended 1976-79] ) SInce graduation Brian has been involved in ministry (nearly 10 years pastoring several Baptist churches), further education (MTh, Regent College; PhD, University of Aberdeen), teaching (Northwest Baptist College and Seminary), and writing (Paul in Roman Custody [Eerdmans] plus chapters in several other volumes as well as various dictionary and journal articles and reviews). Brian continues to preach in churches on invitation month by month and has served the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists of BC and Yukon on the Advisory and Credentials Commission for a number of years. Brian, who has taught in the areas of New Testament and Hermeneutics at NBS since 1997, is currently on a six month Sabbatical leave. He is working on a book project and several articles in the area of the Book of Acts. His wife Rita works permanent part time as a medical office assistant at a doctors' office. Their eldest daughter Patricia (25) is pursuing her bachelor of arts with emphases in English, Fine Arts and Psychology. Their youngest, Jennifer (22), has taken a break from her education (Human Kinetics/Entrepreneurship) to work. This year will mark Brian's and Rita's 30th wedding anniversary.

Werner Jonas. We are calling it a rejuvenation church plant. Please join us in prayer as to the Lord's continued direction and recommend us to people relocating to Calgary. Thank you for continued prayers on our behalf.

Gordon Marchant (Bachelor of Theology 1981)

Aloha! Six years ago the Lord called our family to Hawaii to be the English Ministries pastor in a large Korean church. I know it probably doesn't sound like too great of a hardship to be called to Honolulu, but actually the ministry here is very challenging. We have 3 kids: Brett, Bryson and Catrina. Brett has just accepted the call to become a part-time youth pastor for junior high kids at another local church in Hawaii, which is so exciting for us. Aleta and I are strongly committed to assisting churches in North America to become more effective in reaching out multi-ethnically.

Gilbert Dubé (Bachelor of Theology 1982)

After graduating from NBTC, I returned to Ontario where I ministered the Word at different churches where I found a hunger for the Reformed message. During this time, I launched a new church in a mostly Catholic town. I left the ministry 20 years ago and took on a number of different jobs and occupations. My last venture was a whale cruise in Cape Breton. I did well at it and finally sold the business to a competitor in 2002. I then moved back to Ottawa. Last year I returned to Cape Breton to stay. I now captain a tour boat for the gentleman who bought my business. My season starts in May and ends in October.

There is a small witness in the community of Pleasant Bay. With the Lord's guidance and enabling, I plan to labour with love and help the saints there this coming season (I live in Sydney for the winter). And in Sydney, the Christian witness is weak. I finally stumbled on a small group of Reformed Presbyterians a few weeks ago. I hope to serve there, as the Lord leads. I have been trying to avoid a return to the ministry with every resource at my disposal but the Lord seems to have other plans for me. The Lord gave me 3 wonderful daughters. They are all grown up now. He is able!

Jack Taylor (Master of Theology 1982)

After 18 years in Kenya I returned to serve as the senior pastor at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church in Vancouver. In the past few years Faith has become the home for a Daycare for single parents and new immigrants; ESL; a French immersion pre-school; food bank; Neighbourlink; Awana; Summer camps; and now the New Hope Community Services Society running two refugee homes. Our Spanish congregation, El Rendentor, has been a valuable partner in our ministry outreach. I also worked with John Auxier at ACTS Seminaries in Langley, BC to start Smarter Families Canada. I am also involved in teaching at Northwest through the Youth Leadership Training Program and the missions program, Khidmut.

Our family is a continual whirlwind of changing chaos. Both Laura and Michelle have just been engaged to two great guys and both plan to marry next year. Michelle will finish up some leadership training at Capernwray, marry Tyler Redekkopp and head back

Mario Giraldi (Bachelor of Religious Education 1985) I have been living in Drumheller, Alberta for the past ten years. My employment includes working with mentally disabled adults as well as being the caretaker in a school. My wife Shelene is a school teacher. She is also very actively involved in the local church we attend - Fellowship Baptist Church of Drumheller. We have three children. Our son Lucas is in grade 10. He also has a part-time job at Dairy Queen and is doing great in school. Karissa, our middle child is in grade 8 and is an A+ student. She loves to read and be with her friends at church. Our youngest daughter, Chelsey, is in grade 4. She loves music and being with her friends. She also sings in the church worship team.

Joanne Shields [nee Saunders] (One-Year Certificate 1985)

Joanne is married with three children and attending Crossfield Baptist Church.

Abia Abia (Master of Christian Studies1988)

I always remember my years at Northwest with deep gratitude to God. I thoroughly enjoyed life in the dormitory as well as in classes. I know that God used those years to lay a solid foundation for my life and ministry. I can never forget the intense studies and deep friendship of those years. I was really thrilled last year when the South African Qualifications Authority evaluated my Master's degree from Northwest (1988) as equivalent to the Master of Arts degree of a South African University, on which basis I was offered admission into the doctoral program (New Testament) of a leading reformed South African University.

The story of my life is wholly that of God's own faithfulness (Ps. 91:4b). God has blessed me with a lovely family of six children and given me a great ministry. Since October 2002 I have been the pastor of one of our Qua Iboe Church congregations with over two thousand members. I also continue to serve as the President of Trinity College of Nigeria, an accredited institution of North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus), South Africa. My ministry in the Church and College requires extra hours of work on a daily basis. Please pray for my family and ministry. I will be pleased to hear from my great friends of those years.

John Belanger (u 1988) & Margaret Belanger [nee Mahovlic] (Pre-School Certificate 1989)

I attended in 1986 and again in 1988 taking general studies. I drove the bus for the chorale tour in 1987 and in 1988. I am married(1991) and have two daughters Karyn('93) and Heather('96). My lovely wife Meg (nee Mahovlic) graduated from NBTC with her ECE degree in 1989. I am currently working in Law Enforcement with the RCMP. I attended training in Regina in 2000 and am currently posted in Duncan BC in the municipal traffic section. I am also

Mark Naylor (Master of Divinity 1984) & Karen Naylor [nee Braunberger] (Bachelor of Religious Education 1981) The Naylors returned to Canada in 1999 after 14 years of service in Pakistan. Mark continues to work on translating the Bible into a readable version for newly literate Sindhis and makes trips twice a year to Pakistan. He is also on staff at Northwest and FEBInternational in International Leadership Development. On the home front our 20 year old daughter, Becky is in a B.Sc. nursing program. Matthew will graduate this year from high school and Philip is in grade 8. We also have a foster son, Sean, who has been a friend of Matthew’s for over 5 years. Sports are popular in our home – all three boys play soccer and Becky and Karen train in Karate (we will be grading for our black belts in May). Matthew is keeper on the team that represents lower Vancouver Island. Philip made it on the BC Summer Games team and, as his coach said, the boys were among the best 13 year old players on the Island. Sean plays sports but prefers dirt biking and fixing anything he can get his hands on.

Rosablanca Suen [nee Tseng] (U 1984) I attended the Northwest Baptist Seminary from 1982 to 1984. I chose this Bible school mainly because it was only a 2 minute drive from my home. But this truly was the Lord's leading because the Northwest environment was very homey and provided me not only Biblical academic training, but also the spiritual family atmosphere that nurtured much spiritual growth and maturity. I got married in 1984 and moved to Toronto. In 1986 I finished my Master of Theological Studies program at Tyndale Seminary in Ontario. In 1989, my husband and I left Toronto and had a 2 year training in the Chinese Christian Gospel Disciples Church to learn pastoral work, Biblical exposition and principles of discipleship. In 1996, we both received ordination for the pastoral ministry. We have been serving in a Chinese church in Hong Kong since 1989. We are now presently serving as pastors in Christian Gospel Disciples Church of the Tsuen Wan Branch. Our current ministry is to shepherd God's church faithfully in the Lord's pattern of discipleship. We hope to build men and women of God that are able to lead God's church and also to go out in missions and evangelism to the unreached. We are also interested in the Holy Land. We are now in the process of compiling a DVD and CD ROM pictorial library to share with our church and the whole world our exploration of the significance of these places as they relate to the Bible. Another thing for which I am so thankful to the Lord, as it is related to Northwest Baptist Seminary, is that I was able to contact Dr Larry Perkins, who was my teacher at Northwest 20 years ago. Recently I have been privileged to have Dr. Perkins review the material in the Holy Land DVDs and CD ROMs and he has given me significant direction and insights so as to make my presentations better. I am most thankful and enriched by this mentoring process which has continued from Northwest. They say, a true teacher lasts for a life-time, and if you can find one, blessed you are, and indeed I have been much blessed. Thanks Dr. Perkins and may the Lord reward you abundantly for your love and labor.

75% of the time, but I also do contract work in human resources for a long term care corporation.

Stacey Contenti [nee Mellick] (Certificate in Christian Studies 1992)

Stacey and her husband Chris live in Red Deer, Alberta with their two girls Rachel (9 ½) and Sophia (7). Stacey is a Registered Nurse and has enjoyed teaching part-time in the Nursing Department at Red Deer College alternating with occasional shifts on a busy surgical unit at the hospital. Stacey feels her most important role, however, is to minister to her husband and family. The Contenti's continue to enjoy home schooling their girls and living a lifestyle of learning while growing closer to the Lord. They enjoy serving at Bethany Baptist, a FEBCAST church in Red Deer.

Jacquelyn Coe [nee Burian] (Certificate in Christian Studies 1993) My husband Michael and I have recently moved to Bend, Oregon after stints in Portland (we met at Multnomah Seminary) and California (where my husband was planting a church). I work in marketing and web design at the Oregon State University Cascades Campus and teach mathematics classes at Central Oregon Community College. We are involved in our church, Father’s House, in worship and leading a small group, although a lot of our ministry involves reaching out to our co-workers, neighbours and other friends. We’re enjoying a bit of a break from high commitment ministry for the time being to enjoy life and God’s creation (i.e. skiing, biking, hiking, climbing etc.).

Jeffrey Kwok (Master of Divinity 1993) & Ring Kwok (Master of Religious Education 1997) Jeffrey Kwok (M.Div., 1993) and Ring Kwok (M.R.E., 1997):The Kwoks left Vancouver and went to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX, for further studies in 1998. After spending seven years in the States, they are returning to Vancouver in May 2005. Jeffrey received a Th.M. in May 2000 and a Ph.D. from Southwestern in December 2004. His Ph.D. dissertation is a work on the research and integration of intercultural evangelism and pastoral care. The title of his dissertation is: "The Evangelization of New Immigrants Within the Multi-ethnic Community in America Through the Use of Intercultural Relational Evangelism." Ring received her M.A. in Theology and now is in the stage of writing her dissertation for her Ph.D. degree with a major in Missions. After moving back to Vancouver, Jeffrey will serve as the interim pastor of Surrey Chinese Baptist Church while Ring is writing her dissertation.

Kenton Anderson (Master of Divinity 1994) We currently live in Langley where I (Kent) serve as Dean of Northwest. It's hard to believe, but we've been here now for nine years. We recently returned from a six month sabbatical in London, England which was a great opportunity for us to enjoy a great adventure together. Karen has worked at the Walnut Grove Save-On-Foods for nine years. Our kids are all active in school, church, and in the neighborhood. Walter Fast (Master of Divinity 1988) After graduation in 1987 I worked as associate pastor in my home church in Vancouver for 3 years. Upon invitation I moved to Germany with my family in 1990, where I taught New Testament and homiletics for 8 years at a German Bible college (Bibelschule Brake). In 1999 we were called to pastor a 300 member Mennonite Brethren Church 10 kilometers from the Bible college. Since then I have juggled the pastorate

with some adjunct teaching at the school. My wife Anne and I enjoy our 5 children between 11 and 18 years of age, all of whom are participating in church life, each in his or her own way - one of our greatest joys! We thank God for the ministry he has given us, though the last 6 months have been amongst the most difficult since beginning ministry in 1987.

Lloyd Douglas (Master of Divinity 1990) Lloyd and Martha Douglas have been living in Victoria since 2001. Lloyd is teaching in the public school system in Nanaimo as a teacher-librarian. He plans to retire, Lord willing, this June. Their two daughters, Jennifer Douglas lives in Victoria studying for full time Christian service, and Leanne Garnett and husband John with their first child, Olivia, live close enough for a regular visit. With Olivia's arrival in June, 2004 they are thankful for the Lord's provision of their first grandchild. At present Lloyd is involved with the discipleship training ministry called Discipleship International. He leads one Equip to Serve group in Victoria which utilizes the Navigators 2:7 resource. Also, he is setting up an outreach Bible study on the book of John in Nanaimo. He is the pastor-teacher for a new church, Charis Community Church, which is meeting in their home at present. The focus for ministry is the systematic and expositional teaching of the Word of God. Together with Martha's gift of serving and hospitality they are able to foster the fellowship that is important for building a local church. With Discipleship International he and Martha have had the opportunity to minister in Mexico and Cuba. As the Lord brings to a close his occupation for the last twenty-seven plus years and begins to open the door for a focus on

Christian ministry Lloyd is excited about the Lord's work through His Word by His Spirit.

Rajpal Bhatkar (Master of Theological Studies 1996) Rajpal joined Yavatmal College for Leadership Training, Yavatmal (India) in June 2004. This is the school of Missiology where Dr. Vern Middleton taught when he, along with his family, was in India. Rajpal is in charge of the Field Ministry Department, sending teams of students to various villages in the radius of 30 km around Yavatmal. These students go on Friday noon and come back on Saturday night; they preach the Gospel among the villagers, little children and women included. He visits each team alternately. Rajpal is also heavily involved in church planting ministry with Siyon Ministries in and around Amravati District. This place is 100 km away from Yavatmal. Apart from that he is also a consultant for the ministry of Siyon. This is an indigenous church planting ministry. There are four churches that sprang up in a span of four years. They are in Wagholi, Gourkheda, Sawarkhed and Amravati. These churches are all house churches with congregations of about 26-30 adults and 60 children. God has been blessing this ministry by bringing simple people from all walks of life into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Praise be unto the Lord. By the Grace of God Rajpal has been trying to teach them the Bible in a systematic way, but over the past year has only been able to finish the first Epistle of John. They have a great vision to reach out to the other villages as well but time does not permit. Rajpal requests, “Do pray for us that He will grant us needed time and resources to care for these people. We enjoy ministering to these congregations very much.”

Alvin Jordan (Bachelor of Religious Education 1997) Within 3 months, in 2001, Alvin Jordan graduated from ACTS Seminaries with an MRE, got married to Sarah, and started in full-time ministry in a local church in Richmond. Sarah works as a manager in the pharmaceutical industry. Alvin has worked in diverse denominations, including Evangelical Free, Pentecostal, Mennonite Brethren, Reform, and Fellowship Baptist. Alvin would like to thank some people for shaping his life: Dr. Kent Anderson and of course, his own wonderful wife and loving parents.

Loren Warkentin (Master of Theological Studies 1995) My family and I were home from missionary assignment in Indonesia on an extended leave when I enrolled in studies at Northwest. After graduation, Becky and I were unable to return to our previous assignment due to visa restrictions. Within a few days of resigning ourselves to that fact, the Lord opened an opportunity for me to work here at Northwest and I have been here ever since. I started as college registrar in 1996 and have added several other hats since then. The latest is to work with our Northwest Alumni and to publish our Northwest Alumni Connections. I count it a special privilege to be able to connect with other alumni and hear your stories. My hope is that this publication will be an encouragement to each of you and a means re-establishing ties with old friends and classmates.

My family is all grown and in various stages of leaving the nest. Becky and I are enjoying ministry in our home church in various capacities. It is a great joy and comfort to know that the Lord guides our steps - to which so many stories from you our alumni give testimony. God bless you and do keep in touch.

Jason Karsgaard (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 1998)

I am working at Biola University in La Mirada CA, in the development department. I attend Circle Church in the city of Orange, and live with my wife Joy in Anaheim. Joy and I were married this past August in Los Angeles.

Tanya Steinhilber (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 1998) Since graduating from Northwest, I continued my education at TWU and served as a TWU President's Intern in 2000/01. Since my first year at Northwest (in 1994), I have been leading the DRIME ministry and in 2001, it became my full-time career (a dream job)! We've had the chance to train teams all over North America, and have recently taken DRIME mission teams to Kenya and Greece. We celebrated 10 years of ministry this year and are continually thankful for all the Lord has done over the years. I continue to remember the formative and life-changing years I spent at Northwest! Our drime website is www.drime.com.

Jeremy vanDierman (TREK 1998) & Dana vanDierman [nee Barker] (TREK 1998)

Jeremy and I have been married for over three and a half wonderful years. We have been together since we met in the Trek program in 1997/98. We have no children, but we're looking forward to having them eventually. We live in North Delta and are members of Surrey Alliance Church.

Jeremy is a small group leader, a men's ministry coordinator and a drummer with the church worship team. Jeremy is preparing to enter studies at BCIT in Human Resource Management fall 2005. He currently works as an Inside Sales Representative for Convoy Supply (construction materials) in Burnaby. I'm a missions committee member, updating the church on the status of the workers and works we support. I am also involved in various 'helps' ministries. I work for Alderwoods Group in Burnaby as a Data Control Administrator, maintaining sub ledgers & trust account information for the Trust department.

Bob vanTol (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 1998)

I have been the seminary student intern at Emmanuel Baptist church in Vernon, BC for the past two years. My wife and I moved here from Port McNeill, BC after finishing 5 years of youth ministry there. I have been blessed by the opportunity to take a short break from full time ministry in order to study at Northwest@ACTS. It has been a challenging but rewarding process.

My wife and I have accepted a call to full time youth ministry at Emmanuel Baptist church that will begin in May of this year. We are excited about the opportunities to be used by God in Vernon and are glad we can continue on with the friendships we have already developed. We have been continually

Discipleship. My greatest joy in ministry is seeing people grow in their faith, their love for the Lord and their passion for evangelism and making disciples.

One of the highlights of my year is our summer camp ministry. This year we are offering 7 weeks of full-day summer camps. Two years ago we restructured our summer ministry and transformed it into a tool which provides jobs for youth who are trained and equipped for ministry, as well as opportunities for volunteers to grow in their faith and see God at work as those who do not know Jesus (90% of the kids that participate in the camps) are challenged to put their faith in Jesus. The first year (’03) we restructured our ministry we saw 54 kids come to Christ, this past year (’04) we saw 100 kids put their faith in Jesus. When I see these youth and young adults at work in the summer, sharing their testimonies, giving Gospel presentations and the kids responding, the joy is incredible. I praise God for the great work he is doing and thank him for letting me be a part.

Lawrence Cheung (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 1998)

The thought of participating in pastor care ministry has always been there, but I never envisioned working overseas. After graduating from the college in ‘98, I began my pastoral ministry at my home church in Vancouver. It was certainly a "baptism of fire" as I struggled through the realities of being a wounded healer. The Lord has his plans! Phoebe and I both sensed God wanted us to spend some time in Hong Kong. So in the midst of uncertainties we began our journey to the Far East. Lawrence served as a chaplain at the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital while Phoebe taught at the University of Hong Kong. We learned so much by discovering how our developmental selves affect our ministry styles. The abundance of God's love was so obvious! After nearly 5 years in Asia, we have decided to come back to beautiful BC so Lawrence can study at Northwest again (the seminary) while Phoebe becomes the sole breadwinner of the house! Nikki Lanigan [nee Siemens] (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 1998)

I married Brent on October 11, 2003 and we enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon in the Mayan Riviera. I have served on the Children’s Ministry staff at Northview Community Church in Abbotsford, BC since 1998. Currently, I am serving as the Interim Director of Children’s Ministry while a search is made for a new Children’s Pastor. I love creatively teaching children the truths of God’s Word, as well as leading worship and working with the numerous volunteers. I truly value the Biblical instruction I received while at Northwest. My husband Brent is a student at ACTS Seminaries working on his Masters in Christian Studies and is thoroughly enjoying his studies. He hopes to one day work with college students in Student Life in a campus setting.

Peter Rytkonen (Master of Divinity 1998)

Danny Ferguson (U 2000) After finishing up at Northwest I transferred to Columbia Bible College. I met a girl (April), graduated, got married...the typical bible college experience. It was when we faced a family tragedy that God called me to a

specific ministry. I became a youth pastor (part time) at Good News Calvary Chapel in Pitt Meadows. Sensing a need to be full time, I prayed. God answered by bringing Youth For Christ into the picture. I was able to go on with YFC and set up a partnership that brought me into ministry full time. Now I am excited that I am pioneering a YFC area in Langley and I love being married to April.

Jason Kovacs (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 2000) After graduation in 2000 I spent an exciting summer at Camp Qwanoes serving as Head Counselor. I then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where I was a pastoral apprentice at Bethlehem Baptist Church for 2 years serving and learning under Dr. John Piper. I also served part-time as a College Minister at the church and completed a year of seminary credit. I also met my wife Shawnda at Bethlehem where she served on staff and with Teen Challenge. We married in April 2003 and spent a year in Texas. God then led us to join the staff of Bethlehem's first church plant in Charlotte, N.C. (www.desiringGODchurch.org). We have been here since June '04 and I am serving as a pastor for outreach while also finishing my M.Div at Reformed Theological Seminary. My wife and I have a passion for church planting and look forward to where Lord will lead us. We are also in the process of adoption, waiting on the Lord for our first child.

Lynae Igel [nee Moser] (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 2001)

Following Graduation in April 2000, I received a call to return to my home church as a Part-time Programming Director at Trinity Baptist Church. Since then I have gone to Full-time staff and am now the Gr. 4 to 6 Program Director. My role is overseeing our music, teaching, small group leaders and technical needs on a weekly basis.

The biggest highlight in my life has been meeting the love of my life and getting married this past fall on Oct 10th 2004, to Terry Igel. (Corrie vanTol (’99) and Natasha Hok (’96) were among the wedding party). Terry works for The Leadership Center, Willow Creek Canada, in the MIS Department (Management & Information Systems). We met through the Leadership Center in 2003 while I was speaking at a Children’s Conference.

God has really blessed me through being back in Kelowna where I get to do life with my husband, my parents and both my sisters and their families.

blessed by God as he directs our lives and we are confident that he will continue to do so in our future.

James Warkentin (TREK 1998 & Associate in Religious Education 2000)

James Warkentin and Carolanne Wall were happily married on Dec. 27, 2003. They've now enjoyed almost one and a half great years of marriage and are “lovin' it!” James is currently raising support and working as a missionary on the Internet with Campus Crusade for Christ, while Carolanne is working at AllDrive Canada RV Rentals. They don't have any kids yet, but have adopted a very cute golden retriever puppy named Rusty and are having a blast raising him. You can check out their website at www.jamesandcarolanne.com

Andy Steiger (Outdoor Leadership Certificate 1999) & Nancy Steiger [nee Schellenberg] (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 1999)

We just spent the past year doing missions work and traveling the world throughout South America, Asia, South East Asia and the Middle East. Adventure has taken hold and we can’t help but dream and plan for the next trip. For the moment however, God is leading Andy back into youth ministry and we are excited to begin. After graduating, Nancy worked at Youth for Christ in Richmond for three years and Andy worked as a Youth Pastor at Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship in Coquitlam for two. We have been married now for over three years. We love ministry, being married and going on adventures together. Maybe someday we will settle down, but most likely not! Right now we are living in Richmond. Andy is studying at ACTS Seminaries and is starting as the Youth Pastor for Immanuel Fellowship Baptist, and Nancy is working as an office manager.

Donna Williams (Master of Applied Linguistics and Exegesis 1999) I am still single and aunt to my two nephews Seth and Zachary. I am the director of Audio Esperanza, a project recording New Testaments for non-readers worldwide. I also teach Sunday School and run the sound board at church.

2000s

Shawn Barden (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 2000) Shawn [92-97] and Kimberley Barden have been busy over the last number of years. Shawn had been pastoring in the prairies, and Kimberley, a physician, starting her medical practice. They consider the two weeks they spent

alone in the wilds of the Northwest Territories canoeing the Nahanni River as a highlight. They live in Langley with their dog Daisy while Shawn finishes up full-time studies at ACTS this semester. They are excited about what the future holds for their ministry! Lynae & Terry Igel

They stay connected with other NBC grads through periodic visits to the Island, by hosting Amazing Race parties at their home in Walnut Grove, and by being immersed in the world of church planting.

Ka Shing Alan Au (Master of Applied Linguistics and Exegesis 2001)

Margaret and I have been married for 35 years. Our only son Timothy is getting married in June this year (2005). I am the City Coordinator of VANCOUVER FOCUS, a city-reaching initiative in partnership with the Capilano Southern Baptist Association, the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists, and the North American Mission Board.

Dyan Mouland (Master of Arts in Christian Studies 2001)

Chad Vankoughnett (my husband) and I have an adorable 1 year old named Noah. Chad is currently a police officer in Moose Jaw. I am working as a youth pastor with the Free Methodist church. Church keeps us busy. I love working with my teens and have many meaningful friendships here too.

Daniel Meyer (Master of Religious Education 2001) My wife, Jenn and I have three teenage daughters, keeping us in direct contact with friends' activities and community. We are thankful for the challenges and rewards and opportunities they provide us. We are enjoying ministry at Auguston Neighborhood Church. God is blessing our church at every turn.

Rick Chase (Master of Arts in Christian Studies 2002)

Gerda and I have two children, Petra who was born while I was still in seminary, and Parker who was born the summer after I graduated. I am pastoring an inner city Southern Baptist church called Gateway Baptist Church (www.gate2surrey.com) in Whalley, British Columbia. Gateway has been a real challenge, but we have seen attendance grow from 15 to over 60 in two years. We have grown tremendously as a result of the challenges of transforming a dying church into a vibrant outreach oriented church. We keep in close contact with Dan Chapman and when God releases us from Gateway we hope to church plant with the Fellowship. Until then we are enjoying God in the ministry to which He has led us here.

Lancy Siu (Master of Arts in Christian Studies 2002) I have three children, a daughter and two sons. My three children became Christians when they were very young and today are walking with God and serving him in different ministries with their various spiritual gifts. My son-in-law is Japanese. My children are gifted in singing. I am also a choir member of the Vancouver Oratorio Society. My husband, William, and I were baptized as Christians on the same day in 1972. Now we are living in North Vancouver with our two sons. God called me to serve as Director of Chinese Ministries at Marpole Baptist Church one and a half years ago. Many Chinese people are living in the Marpole area. We

Mark Russell (TREK 2000) After the TREK program in 2000, the last year it was at NBC, I was in college for Visual Communication/Design and Photography, with one semester at Trinity Western University in Linguistics. During and after college I pursued God's will for me in ministry. I am now in fulltime ministry in Colorado at Camp Redcloud, which is a Christian mountain adventure camp for all ages. I am Redcloud's photographer and media guy. As fulltime staff I have the opportunity to involve many other people in our ministry through support raising (we need many prayer and financial partners).

Finally, I saved the best for last; I will be married in November to Robin Hansen.

Hugh Stewart (Master of Divinity 2000) Greetings in the Lord: Since graduating from Northwest, my family and I have been involved in three churches in BC. The first summer out found us joining a work in Victoria. The good news was that we found the people to be extremely warm and giving. The bad news was that we weren’t able to find a way for the church to survive. The numbers were down, and without a building the challenge was overwhelming.

Not knowing what to do, we moved back to the Okanagan Valley. I was asked to preach in a Lumby church and within months had agreed to pastor the church on an interim basis. Over an issue of discipline, the leadership board was asked to step down, and with them I gave my resignation. Sometimes, church splits can be a gift from God. Working with this same group of people, an instant leadership board and a solid following, we decided to continue doing what we were doing, but this time as our own, distinct work. We had our first meeting just over a year ago with 18 in attendance. It was unanimous that we begin a Baptist work in our beloved village. From the initial 18, we now regularly see numbers in the mid-thirties. We have been blessed to see two husbands who rarely set foot inside the church attending regularly. Praise God for his many blessings.

We are now awaiting our official inclusion into the FEBBC/Y later this month. We are excited in what God is doing in our village and in our valley. We have been given a renewed vision for prayer and desire to be a praying church, rather than just a church that prays. Our main prayer is for revival, of our selves, our church(es), our hometowns, our province and our country.

Brad Sumner (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 2000) & Meghan Sumner [nee Hall] (Bachelor of Arts in Religion 2000) Brad and Meghan Sumner (knee Hall) began pastoral ministry right after graduation from Northwest at their home church, North Langley Community Church, in the area of Discipleship Ministries. Brad has been working on his masters degree at MBBS-ACTS and will graduate this April with a MA in Church Ministries with a focus on Church Planting. This Easter, they also began a brand new phase of ministry as they launched North Langley’s first satellite campus, Jericho Ridge Community Church, in the Willoughby area of Langley. They are excited to see what God

working at Milliman, an actuarial consulting firm. Our lives have been quite busy since the adoption of Samantha. It’s very strange for Marty to be called “Reverend” and even stranger for Lynn and Marty to be called Mom and Dad… yikes!

Bernard Loong (Master of Divinity 2003) I have been serving God at Port Moody Pacific Grace MB Church since I graduated from Northwest@ACTS in 2003. The church has about 450 members, around 300 are in the Chinese congregation and the remaining in the English congregation. I am now the leader of the Chinese ministry. Although the ministry is challenging and sometimes exhausting, God’s blessing is always with the church and my family. After these two years of ministry, I deeply feel that without God, nothing can be done. Angelina Kwan (Wife), Charis Loong (13), Dorothy Loong (9), Elijah Loong (8).

have a burden to reach and to serve them with the love of God. By the guidance and leading of God, the support of leaders, the ethnic ministries commission of FEBBC and the support of my husband and family I have started a Chinese ministry for the church. This includes an English conversation class, a Chinese Bible study group, Joy Fellowship (Cantonese), a women's Cantonese class and a Mandarin speaking fellowship. In Luke 19:10 Jesus said, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." This is what we are endeavoring to do.

Martin Dong (Master of Divinity 2003) & Lynn Dong (Diploma in Christian Studies 2003)

2004 was a whirlwind year for the Dong family. Highlights include: • Marty's ministerial ordination in the American

Baptist Church in October • Lynn's completion of her actuarial certification • A mission vision tour spanning eight countries in

Eastern Europe led by a former Bible Smuggler. Alas, no sign of Dracula.

• The adoption of our daughter, Samantha, in November (born 1/17/04 in China). Amazingly, people comment that she looks like Marty! (too bad for her…)

Marty recently accepted an associate pastor position at Renton First Baptist Church in a suburb of Seattle. His responsibilities include starting a Gen-X ministry and ministering to young families. Lynn continues

A note from the President—Dr. Larry Perkins

As I have read the news from our alumni, I have no doubt that Northwest has and continues to make a strong contribution to Kingdom ministry around the world. Praise God for the vision of those who have sacrificed to establish and accomplish our mission. We enter our sixty-fifth year of ministry this fall (2005), with over 2000 alumni. So many churches planted, so many people introduced to Jesus, so many people encouraged and helped, so many communities enriched – and the stories continue.

Your stories encourage us to excellence in our ministry training, to pursuing new, better, but still biblically-faithful ways of equipping God’s people to pursue fully their calling in Christ.

We are so appreciative of those who stand with us in prayer and financial gifts. You are an incredible part of all of these stories. Without your involvement with us, none of this would be happening today.

Our prayer as people who continue to lead the Northwest journey is simply this – may God keep you all strong in the faith, may He give you all joy in your service, and may He make you all a rich blessing among the people whose lives you touch.
