SENIOR MINISTRIES Primetimers Senior Fraud and Scam Presentation

On Saturday, May 5, 60 people attended a luncheon presentation by four very well-informed women

regarding senior scams, both telephone and internet. Amybeth Lake was responsible for the

presentation and on behalf of Senior Ministries, a very special thank you and well done! Amybeth

works for the U.S. Attorney’s Office where she assists federal crime victims and their families.

Amybeth’s immediate supervisor, Allison Stafford, was on hand to help answer the many questions

posed by the presentation. We were very fortunate to have two seasoned Assistant United States

Attorneys, one who specializes in Cyber and Intellectual Property Fraud (Lisa Feldman) and the other

assigned to the Criminal Division, Major Fraud Section (Monica Taft), both attorneys serve in the Los

Angeles area. This amazing team took the audience through past and very current fraud activities,

especially those seeking out seniors.

This past week, one of our own members, Jo-Ann Seitzinger, was taken for several thousand dollars

by an Apple Computer “infection” scam. According to police, this is the new one on the block. Jo-

Ann used the handouts given to her from the presentation (she was unable to attend) to contact all

pertinent enforcement and reporting agencies. If in doubt, as the lawyers told us, hang up, log off,

and call authorities to verify what you are seeing or hearing. – Peggy Walters

Reminder

If you have books that you are ready to give away please take them to the $10 or Less Book Store.

It is located at Nordhoff and Tampa behind Chi Chi's in the south end of the strip mall near Big Lots.

Just tell them to credit the account for Northridge United Methodist Church. We have a credit there

that we can use when we want to get books for the North Valley Caring Services.

Save the Date

The Primetimers will be going to the Glendale Center Theater on August 25.

“Jason’s Jots” Greetings! Summer is here, and that means planning, planning, and more planning for the fall season of youth ministry! While there are some great youth events in the works for summer—and for ALL ages—I am already rolling into plans for a weekly fall youth program. I have been asked questions lately about how one can help the youth ministry program. I would like to include this answer in the newsletter here for anyone who may have been praying on this very question. The honest answer in short is volunteering as a youth program leader. I often look back on my time as a youth and what meant most to me when I was involved in similar programs. It wasn’t the games, or even the lesson, but the relationships I formed with the leaders who chose to be there simply as a presence and example of what it meant to be a Christian. I know many are praying or feel the spirit pushing them to help in youth ministry some way. For those of you feeling this way I would ask you to consider helping relationally. Contrary to many thoughts, the time-commitment is small, and you need only to lead in areas that you are comfortable in. I can promise you the return on your investment will be an everlasting one. I hope everyone enjoys a bright push into summer! Jason Obermeier, Director of Youth Ministries

Saying Goodbye

On Sunday May 27 we said goodbye to Leslie Orozco as one of our regular Children’s Sunday School teachers. Leslie is starting an accelerated BSN program for nursing at West Coast University. She will be attending classes, studying, and participating in 8-12 hours shifts of hands on training within different hospitals in a variety of departments. It will be a whole new experience for Leslie with tough challenges and great opportunities. Leslie stated “I am excited to begin my dream career and I am very grateful for being at the church all these years with love, support and understanding.” We will miss Leslie greatly and send her on to do God’s work of healing in another way and another place with gratitude for her service at NUMC. Please keep Leslie in your prayers in the days to come.

June Movie Night

On Monday, June 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kendall Building, Church and Society will screen the movie "Pray the Devil Back to Hell," a documentary which chronicles the social unrest in Liberia that tore a nation apart and left hundreds of thousands dead or displaced. The film reconstructs the way this tragedy galvanized a coalition of Christian and Muslim women to rise up and, through nonviolent tactics, put pressure on their government to pursue peace talks. Director Gini Reticker follows their grassroots moment as it leads to democratic elections and Liberia's first female president. The rebels frequented mosques, while Taylor claimed to be a devout Christian who, according to Gbowee, could "pray the devil out of Hell." It was therefore the responsibility of the women in this inter-faith coalition to pray the devil (of war) right back to Hell. This 2009 won several festival awards. It contains subtitles and is unrated. Running time: 72 minutes.

All Church Hike Las Virgenes Canyon Saturday, June 2, 2018 Meet: 8:30 am in church parking lot to car-pool Enjoy an easy 4-mile hike in Las Virgenes Canyon. This hike features valley and live oaks, sycamores, and scenic green hills (if the green can hold out just a couple of weeks.) This trail is mostly level, with a slight, gradual elevation gain followed by a long, easy downhill stroll back to the trailhead. We will follow a rarely used trail tucked between the two main trails of the former Ahmanson Ranch and Las Virgenes Canyon, while avoiding the climbs to the mesa or ridge trails. Dogs on leash are welcome. Hat, water, and sunscreen are a must. Trailhead is located at the north end of Las Virgenes Canyon Rd. From 101 West, take Las Virgenes exit and turn right, continue to the end of the road and park on the street.
