What is AI?
In a nutshell,
AI or Artificial intelligence is the science of getting computers to do tasks that require human intelligence.

From Machine Learning to Deep Learning
Back in 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov.
It did this by studying humans and replaying prior matches.
In 2016, AlphaGo, a program created by the Google Deepmind division, defeated Lee Se-dol, one of the world’s top players in ‘GO’.
In what is since published, AlphaGo didn’t “learn” from humans. It used Deep Learning method. Humans may have taught AlphaGo the rules, but the program mastered the game by playing against itself.

Why is it advancing now?

Example: Google Assistant on 3 May 2018
Google show cased how Google Assistant can make a hair cut appointment over the phone.

Ethics Challenge

Example: the ‘trolley dilemma’The case in which you have to decide whether to sacrifice the minority to save the majority is called the ‘trolley dilemma’.

Opportunities for AI in Healthcare
• There is money.. e.g. close to 20% GDP in USA will attract innovators
• Availability of new data sets - genomics
16
Challenges for AI in Healthcare
• Who is going to take accountability for the risks
• Is the data sets suitable AI training available and complete

Digital Disruption in
Healthcare is happening..
What is the future of
General Practice..

The case for transformation
1. Transformation is not about Technology. Technology is only an enabler.
2. This is about People. This is about you, me and our Whanau.
3. We need health service transformation centred around people, that is enabled by technology. Too often we look for technology for answers.
21
“Be sure to differentiate between
legitimate digital transformation
designed to disrupt or protect
against disruption – and digital
change projects, which create a
better version of the past.”- Rob Llewellyn

Is Primary care ready for transformation?
“Primary care is our biggest opportunity to lower costs while continuously improving the quality of care – and technology happens to be a vital tool in this mission”
Paul Bernstein, MD, Medical Director Kaiser Permanente San Diego
23
Todays model of care is centred “service silos” and mostly around physical locations.
What does this mean for Digital?
How will we offer services without the need to physically visit all the time?
24
Moves to complement face to face with services like Video Consultations has to be a core part of that transformation..
25
• Further enhance the Patient Relationship – the best immunity from disruption is to build and enhance relationship with the Patient.
• Aim to increase efficiency, improve patient outcomes and improve the patient experience.
• At the same time, we need to work hard to ensure that we do not create a digital divide or forget the need for health equity.
