A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and a former military officer, Ashli has been working in the Northern Kentucky area for the past several years. She focuses heavily on
additions and renovations to existing homes and custom homes. Her tag line, Homes that Live Well, can be used to define her as an architect.
Ashli focuses heavily on creating homes that respond to the unique lifestyle and goals of each of her clients. She anticipates their needs and translates their goals into quality living spaces. Her projects embody excellent character, spatial organization, energy efficiency and durability enhancing the occupants’ quality of life.
Ashli recently had three projects on the Fall 2011 Tour of Remodeled Homes: The Tower Place Expansion built by Corbin Custom Remodelers, Lasting Impressions (master suite renovation) built by Cornerstone and Annie’s Entertainment (great room renovation and out door entertaining area) built by Grosser and Company Remodeling.

Ashli is looking forward to working with the builders and remodelers at the home builders association in 2012. She will be giving several seminars/ working sessions addressing issues architects and builder face today.
Ashley will be presenting as part of the HBA Winter Continuing Education Series for 2012. She will be presenting multiple topics listed on our winter schedule. We welcome Ashley Slawter to the HBA and look forward to working with her!

Lately cloud computing has been garnering notoriety as more and more businesses take advantage of its various benefits. Cloud computing is a type of computing
that relies on sharing computing resources rather than using local servers or personal devices to handle applications. Cloud computing allows a business to outsource various applications historically maintained on hardware housed internally.
Cloud computing is changing the way many industries do business. The construction industry is no different. Cloud computing impacts various aspects of the construction industry including architecture design, bidding, project management
and control, procurement, and project accounting. However, before moving any critical applications to the cloud, it is important to examine the benefits and drawbacks of this computing model.
Benefit – Flexibility. The cloud allows you to access applications from any computer, not just the computer in your office. If a construction manager needs to access an application from the site, all he needs is a computer and an Internet connection. This flexibility helps increase productivity and efficiency.
Drawback – Security. With the flexibility to access the software from any computer, security becomes paramount. Investigating each cloud provider’s security policy must be a part of your due diligence process.
Benefit – Costs. The costs of accessing software through a cloud are generally lower than the costs associated with purchasing and hosting software internally. Many hardware costs can be avoided.
Drawback – Uptime Issues. For any business, it is crucial that employees have, for the most part, uninterrupted access to the various applications they need to do their jobs. 99.9% availability and promised response times within a few hours for mission critical applications are standard.
Benefit – Storage Capacity. The cloud boasts significantly larger capacity for data storage than most in-house services. Essentially, the cloud provides for the online storage of information.
Drawback – Return of Information. When you leave one cloud provider and move to another, you will need to transfer all of your information. Be sure to negotiate obligations on the part of the cloud provider so there can be a seamless transition without the loss of data.

Congratulations to the Tour of Remodeled Homes People’s Choice Winner, T&J Home Specialists!
Special Thanks to laFarge GypsumSince 2002, Lafarge Gypsum has operated a state-of-the-art plant producing drywall and joint compound in Silver Grove, Kentucky. For the past two years, Lafarge has partnered with the Evening Trades Program to provide tours of their plant for all of our classes.
Students are given a two hour tour of the facility, which uses 99% recycled content by weight, in the production of drywall. The plant uses synthetic gypsum (calcium sulfate) to produce the drywall. This synthetic gypsum is a by-product of the desulfurization process to improve air emissions at the Moscow and North Bend power plants. This by-product would normally be removed and disposed of in a landfill, but Lafarge has turned that by-product into something valuable and useful, as well as not harmful to the environment!
Besides being seeing motor control centers, properties of drywall products and industrial HVAC equipment, the students get to see a plant that has embraced a Green philosophy of sustainability. Lafarge is listed in the “100 Global Most Sustainable Corporations in the world” and has received the CCL honor awarded by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
We, at the Enzweiler Trade Program, would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Lafarge for sharing with our students this great experience and a model for the future of Industry.

Pella Impervia Dual-Color Option NOW AVAILABLE!
Neither wind nor rain nor sleet or snow stops determined mail carriers. Nor do those elements and other climate extremes phase Pella Corporation’s energy-efficient Pella Impervia line, expanding in the Summer of 2011 to include White interior option for all units.
Pella Impervia windows and patio doors offer more style and design flexibility for your customers. With the new dual-color option, Pella Impervia products can have a White interior with the choice of White, Tan or Brown exterior.
Pella Impervia windows and patio doors arrive pre-finished with a powder-coat paint finish on both interior and exterior. This durable finish stays looking great for years with little care.
“We’re pleased to offer more innovative solutions to builders and homeowners living in areas where a stronger, more durable window is a must,” said Duane Putz, director of sales and marketing for Pella Impervia. “This product is made for hot, cold, wet or windy climates and now it’s available in more styles.”
Pella Impervia can withstand the forces of Mother Nature without cracking, shrinking or warping in extreme weather conditions. The sleek-profiled innovative products made from Duracast®, the strongest most durable material in windows and doors, are virtually maintenance-free and well-suited to today’s busy lifestyles and balanced budgets for home and business owners.* Builders, remodelers and homeowners may choose from convenient factory prefinished brown, white or tan color options and now have a White interior!
For more information, please contact your local Pella representative or call 513-936-5240.

tour of Remodeled Homes: The Tour was held on October 1st and 2nd with a total of 19 entries in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and was a huge success! I hope you had a chance to attend the TORH and see the wonderful projects that were entered. Attendance at the show was great and many of the consumers attending were interested in remodeling their homes. The Remodelers in the TORH are already busy following up on leads from the show. Start planning your entries for next year’s TORH!!
Congratulations to the 2011 tour of Remodeled Homes People’s Choice Winner – T & J Home Specialists!
Home & Remodeling Showcase: The H & R Showcase will be held February 10 – 12, 2012 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Remodeler’s Council Meeting: Plan to attend the next Remodeler’s Council Meeting on January 5 at noon at the HBA Office. The meeting is sponsored by Tri-State Wholesale Building Supply.
