  • Endure for a Cure

On Friday, our fabulous Endure for a Cure team (Thomas Pan, Isaac Clark , Kylie Ma, Joanna Ho, Jack Li, Rishi Israni, Lea Hartley, Ryan Lynch, Max Oldham, Isabella Lorenzo, Tasman Parnell, Daniel Duncan, Keeghan Marshall-Witte, Rory Self, Thilara De Mel and Zahra Chew) battled the wind, rain and lactic acid to cycle for five hours at Eastern Creek raceway, raising an incredible $9,525 for The Children’s Cancer Institute.

These wonderful young people challenged themselves physically and fiscally, demonstrating resilience, tenacity and resourcefulness to step outside their own lives for a day and give their time and energy to an extremely worthwhile cause. Fiona Brien (Student Engagement) was frequently stopped by the adult participants from Corporate Sydney to enquire as to which school our students were from and all commented on their impressive nature. These students are excellent ambassadors for our school community and we are extremely proud of them all. Thank you to all who sponsored the team and helped ensure that The Children’s Cancer Institute can continue their incredible and important work.

Year 10 Parent / Teacher Evening

Thank you to the parents and guardians of our Year 10 students who were able to attend Parent and Teacher Interviews at school last night. This provided a very worthwhile opportunity for our staff to meet with parents and discuss the progress of students. Please remember to contact the school at any time throughout the year if you have any questions, concerns or feedback.

    College Senior Music Day

The annual College Music day, held at Freshwater Senior Campus on Tuesday this week, involved students from all five NBSC campuses. Students participated in practical masterclasses with composers Ben Loomes and Peter Aoun, as well as being provided with one-on-one advice about their core compositions.

Presentations included managing performance anxiety from Dr Tablot and perfecting performances by ex-Manly student Connor Lambrou. Manly

students Elden Loomes and Alanna Manfredini also performed works in the performance session. In addition, sight singing and musicology sessions were held, led by Lanneke Grace and Lucienne Herft.

Special thanks go to Lucienne Herft and Andrew Herft, who organised this very worthwhile annual event.

    Project Penguin

On Thursday, forty Year 9 students spent the day at Little Manly on their first Project Penguin excursion. Project Penguin sees our Year 9 students mentor local primary students in their design of a solution to the problems facing little penguins. The excursion at Little Manly involved a beach and bush clean up, learning about how the aboriginal custodians of the land used it sustainably, investigating the little

Night of Stars – Save the Date

The annual SRC Night of Stars, will be held on Monday 20 May at the Freshwater Senior Campus auditorium - doors opening at 6:30pm. We are most grateful that this space is available for us to use, as the refurbishment of our school hall will not be completed in time for this event.

Tickets are $10 and available for purchase from the Manly Campus school office, or at the door on the night.

    Archibull

The Archibull Prize is an innovative, hands on program that sees urban and rural schools research an agricultural industry and express their findings through artwork – specifically a fibreglass cow. 2019 is the 10th year of the Archibull Prize and we are very excited that Manly Campus will be one of the 20 secondary schools participating this year. This involves researching the wool industry and creating the cow artwork, an animation and recording the learning in an online blog. The Manly Archibull Team has been formed, student members range from Year 8 to 11.

Our cow arrived this morning – meet Archie! Archie needs to be given a more apt name that is reflective of the wool industry. Please see the competition link in this newsletter to enter your ideas for a name.

    From the Deputies Making gains

I remember some words of wisdom that were once imparted to me during a challenging time early on in my life. These resonating words were ‘inch-by-inch is cinch, yard-by-yard is hard’. The idea of breaking down challenges into ‘achievable chunks’ is not new. There are many phrases such as ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and educational theories such as Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development that highlight this concept.

I was once again reminded of this concept when listening to the guest presenter, adolescent psychologist Sarah Adlington, at our Staff Development day at the beginning of this term. She was discussing strategies to address students’ anxiety. Sarah discussed the importance of providing suitable challenges within our adjustments, to ‘lean into’ the discomfort and provide incremental exposure. Whilst her strategies are supported by modern research, they are based in ancient wisdom.

Greek legend tells the tale of Milo of Croton who trained for the Olympics by carrying a calf each day. The calf grew bigger which increased the weight he carried. This triggered his body to gain strength and he became the best wrestler of his time; winning the Olympics six times. Indeed this lesson can be applied to any situation in which we want to ‘make gains’ – physical, academic, social and emotional. Gradual exposure builds our ability to deal with something we previously found challenging or even impossible.

Next time your goals feel overwhelming, remember to ‘lean into it’ add just that ‘little bit of weight to

  • the bar’ and you will be ‘lifting’ more than you did yesterday.

Between Tuesday 14 May and Tuesday 21 May, students in Year 7 and 9 will participate in NAPLAN Online. The schedule will be:

    Term 2 - Week 3

    Tuesday 14 May – Writing

    Thursday 16 May – Reading

Friday 17 May – Conventions of Language

    Term 2 - Week 3

    Tuesday 21 May – Numeracy

*Note: If a student is away, catch-up sessions can be arranged up until Friday 24 May.

Students will be advised on session times the week prior to the tests so that they know what lessons to prepare for.

Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum,

Individual Student Health Care Plans If you are a parent of a child who has a severe allergy, asthma or another kind of ongoing medical condition you should have recently received a letter from the school. This letter requested that you update the school on your child’s medical details and provide relevant documents, if required. In some cases we have asked for a completed Individual Health Care Plan signed by a doctor. We are asking that this completed information be returned to the school by Friday 17 May, either to the front office or via email to [email protected].

We are currently in the process of updating all our student medical details. This compulsory Department of Education wellbeing procedure is an annual requirement, aimed to keep our students safe and well supported.

  • Night of Stars Night of Stars is the annual Manly Campus talent show organised by the SRC. This year, we are trying something new and exciting – the event will be in the Freshwater Senior Campus auditorium.

It is also very purposeful and close to our hearts as we have decided that the proceeds will go towards supporting Mrs Colby and the Cancer Council. Ms Colby has been an inspiration, using her own fight with cancer to raise awareness on the issue, and we look forward to having her as a guest judge and performer at the Night of Stars!

Night of Stars will be held at the Freshwater Senior Campus auditorium on Monday 20 May. Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets are $10 and on sale at Manly Campus school office, or can be purchased at the door on the night.

    Europe History Tour Student Report

The 2019 History Tour was an amazing action packed adventure, where we saw new sights, ate new food, drank new drinks and had fun through it all. From the moment we touched down in the frost air of Munich we were rearing to go, so we dropped our bags on the bus and headed to the city centre, where we got our first taste of authentic German cuisine - Currywurst sausages. We met our guide and he gave us some history of the town, 800 years old, and he called it young! We saw Hitler's Office, where his first protest took place, a beerhall and an amazing gothic town hall with a carousel on its spire. Our second day was a bit more grim, as we visited the concentration camp Dachau. It was a depressing site, but it was interesting to walk through and see all the horrors of the Nazis, as a good reminder of the past. After a quick bus ride we arrived in the sweet town of Nuremberg, and toured where they held the Nuremberg trials. Luckily, the actual courtroom was open and we got a peek inside!

The real gem of Nuremberg was the heart of the city, which felt almost like time-travel to a medieval village with the cobblestone streets, a snaking river crossed by wooden bridges, a bustling marketplace, and an old castle on the hill to complete the look! We toured the rally grounds where Hitler famously held his speeches, and they were enormous. The scale of them was imposing, it was like we had been shrunk down. We finished off Nuremberg with a tour of Kaiserburg Castle, where we saw classic medieval armor, swords and shields, and one of the deepest wells in Europe, over 50 metres straight down. Our final stop in Germany was Berlin, which was another change in scenery. The medieval cobblestone, suburbs and plains were replaced with big buildings and city streets. The city was grand, and we got the best view from the glass dome in the Reichstag, where you could see the full skyline. It went on for miles, it would be very easy to get lost. We went on a tour to the Brandenburg gate (and again at night, it was an amazing photo opportunity), the German museum, Checkpoint Charlie and most interestingly the Berlin wall. It was interesting to see the difference between east and west, with the

architecture and the traffic lights (which were equally bad on both sides), and the East Side gallery had some amazing artworks on a remaining segment of the wall.

After a week in the cold air of Germany, we were excited to get back into the sun, and after our 20 hours of travel getting to Europe, the 2-hour flight felt like time travel. We arrived in the Bay of Naples around midday and hopped onto the bus, but it wasn’t like Germany. The traffic was crazy, no lines, no rules. I don’t think we saw one car without a dent. However, the Italian streets were beautiful because they were so full of life. It felt as if everything had a story to tell, it was like looking at a postcard wherever you went. Just driving through the city was scenic enough, but luckily we were accompanied by Estelle Lazer, an amazing Australian archaeologist working at Pompeii, who had some fascinating history about the city. The view from the hotel was breathtaking. Across the bay, Mt Vesuvius rose from the horizon, and nearer the mountain was dotted with houses. You could spend hours just sitting on the roof taking it all in. We had researched the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum but to be walking in amongst them was another story altogether. It was walking through history, we even did our own performance in the amphitheatre. The final challenge of Naples was the ascent of Mt Vesuvius. Without my friends’ help I don’t think I could have made it up, but it was worth it once we got there. We took one last look at the view of Naples, before trekking back down, ready to head to our final destination.

All roads lead to Rome, and that’s where we were to ended our tour. We walked amongst grandiose buildings, flung coins into the Trevi fountain, toured the Colosseum, walked up the Spanish steps. We came for the history, but we wanted to stay because of the food. Pizza, pasta, calzones, street food. Everything just made your mouth water. It was always fun to sit down in a restaurant on the street, watching people walk by as we shared some pizza and talked about the day. On our last day in Rome we went to Vatican City, and walked through the museum, the Sistine Chapel, but most impressively St Peter's Basilica. The artwork, architecture, and size of it was stunning, especially after we learnt it

took 120 years to complete. We did some final souvenir shopping, had one last meal, and then it was time to go. Honestly, the History tour was an amazing and educational 2 weeks, I had fun with friends and had some completely new experiences, yet none of it would have been possible without the amazing teachers who came along for the ride (and to make sure we were having fun).

    Ripley Voeten (Year 12)

  • Youth Ambassador Exchange From 13 - 18 April, 3 Manly Campus students; Luka (Year 11), Eliza (Year 10) and Noah (Year 10) were selected for the Youth Ambassador Exchange to a predominantly Aboriginal North-West NSW town called Brewarrina, with Northern Beaches Council. Below are extracts from a student report by Eliza Lo Russo, of the experience.

In ones life, there are a handful of personal experiences that shape, change and cultivate an individual's perspective and values. For me, the Northern Beaches Sister City Youth Exchange is one of them. The experience was indescribably educational, eye opening and full of fun. I learnt so much, not just about the community and its history but about the generosity and kindness of its people themselves.

Brewarrina, an area so rich in culture and diversity, has so much to offer even in times of hardship and difficulty. Our short stay there was made so memorable as a result of the giving and welcoming nature of Danielle and Jen from the Shire Council and the kids who gave up their time to spend with us.

One of the biggest highlights of the trip was our visit to Gundabooka, a protected national park to the south-west of Brewarrina, where we spent a couple of hours listening to an elder, Uncle Phillip speak to us about the land and importance of culture in the area. Uncle Philip's main message he wanted to impart on us was of how what we saw in the land was important but things we could not see were the most important.

The next day was jam packed full of fun and games at Boat Ramp to celebrate Youth Week. It was super cool to see how the whole community came together and were able to solidify the friendships that we’d established the day before and meet a bunch of new people too.

We also participated in an interesting Sexual Health workshop run by Mission Australia and by us participating, it positively encouraged a lot of the local kids to do so too. That night we invited all the

kids over to Beds on the Barwon for fun, games and a fire. This was my favourite part of the trip and we had an absolute ball.

Our fourth day was super jam packed but lots of fun. We were up nice and early to get a head start on the drive to Lightning Ridge to visit the opal mines.

Our final day in Bre was a sad one. Having to say bye to a town that had given us so much as well as finally witnessing in person the effects of drought on the community in the dry riverbed made for an emotional one for me. We started out with a tour of the local museum learning about the area’s rich history and significance, getting to hold many artefacts and hear more about the historical oppression of Indigenous Australians.

One of the biggest facts that stood out to me was that upstream, a cotton mill lay which stores 16x the amount of water in Sydney harbour for cotton production and manufacture, yet the riverbed for the towns alongside it runs dry. It was really confronting but so eye opening, providing many takeaways for me and my knowledge of rural and remote communities.

Just like Uncle Phillip had said, the things we had seen with our eyes were so important, the effects of drought, the beautiful landscape, the mines, paintings, wildlife etc, but the aspects that we couldn’t see but rather felt, such as the warmth and kindness from all the people we met, were the ones that stood out strongest.
