The Webber Shield format is; 12 man teams, 6 x pair’s matches and 12 x singles matches. The challengers must beat the holders. The holders retain the Shield if the score is a tie.

Delegates Feedback: K Edwards (Tournament Controller) 1. Karen expressed concerns about time over-runs (size of field vs hosts table

capacity, not heeding advice regarding proven operational practise), player / supporters behaviour (speaker systems too loud). These concern were evident at the Ian McInnes Memorial and the NA Masters. Can Delegates please provide feedback to their players / supporters. Northern Area &Tournament Controller to reiterate expectations before tournaments start and as necessary.

B Kroon: 1. Baz provided feedback on Papatoetoe RSA’s hosting of the recent NA Masters

- The field should have been restricted due to the clubs table capacity, the club benefitted more from last year’s Scotch Mixed Pairs event as the overheads were less.

2. The Papatoetoe RSA will be holding their annual Harry Silva Mixed Scotch Pairs (Saturday 1 September). Baz agreed that all incumbents will hold their places as long as they pay their entries before the required date, otherwise their spots will be given to someone else.

Delegates Feedback: E Wikaira-King: Thanked everybody who supported the Mangere housie fundraiser. Dave said that it was a really good day. B Kroon: Asked if Papakura R.S.A had confirmed their intention to host the B Grade. Dave advised that there is a lot of miscommunication going on but they are still keen to host. S Robertson: Asked who sends out the invoice for the extra tables used at the Mcinnes (Northern Area or Excellence) Would like invoice to be sent to Betty at Club. She also commented that the Mcinnes Memorial ran brilliantly. B Green: Wanted to know the cost for table hirage for hosting events. Weymouth are seeking sponsors for the Open Singles event. K Tito: Asked if all events have hosts. Dave advised that at the moment they are all covered. D.Tokorangi: Has been approached again (this time by Vince Tate) about changing the B Grade date as it clashes with the North Island Snooker being hosted by Howick. We will not be changing the date. K Tito: Asked when 2nd Round draw will be done. Dave advised he was waiting for 100% confirmation from MNRSA as they were still contemplating whether to stay in or not.

Presidents Report: 2016 Reflection

NA Interclub

Congratulations to all of our various Grade / Division winners for 2016. To the teams who have clawed and scratched their successes, well done (changing of the guard NSH Premiers & Mangere Wahine). 2017 looks interesting with the addition of Swanson RSA in the Ladies).

To all of the players who have supported this year’s tournaments, well done, especially to the winners of these events. Unfortunately, our participation numbers are declining, so the NA Executive may look at restructuring some of our events as a cost savings measure (tournament impacted include Ladies Singles & NA “B Grade” bot 2 day events.

As decided in 2014, all tournament hosts will be determined by a roster (allowing all member clubs an opportunity to host events). The format will initially be trial and error.

Special thanks must go to Wayne Cameron who has supplied our tables this year and the awesome work by Karen Edwards & Sandra Mitchell.

CNZ North Island & National Events

Congratulations to the players who attended these events including the various winners, unfortunately except for the Ladies players, there wasn’t much silverware on offer as there has been in recent years. Special congratulations go to Manurewa CC for hosting this year’s Open National. The feedback received was awesome.

2017 and Beyond

The first notable change for 2017 is a new table supplier (Excellence Billiards: Matt Edwards), slightly more expensive than our current supplier, so the Executive will be looking at ways to cover the shortfall. Thanks to Frank for seeing this negotiation through to contract signing, however I expect a few initial challenges as Matt Edwards is new to tournament table supply.

The new Referee’s Advisory Group stuttered a little this year, but we now have a clear position where the National body sits regarding referee’s, so NA will be pushing ahead, doing “our thing” to ensure the quality of referee’s are the best in the country, so a busy 2 months ahead in setting up the group.

Challenges for 2017 will be the NA Championship events in terms of the rostering of hosts to run our tournaments as host clubs need time to raise funds to meet tournament costs

Special thanks go out to the Executive Committee; in particular, Karen Edwards who has been instrumental in ensuring our tournament operate efficiently. Thanks go to Suzan Gardner as results compiler in her first year under the watchful gaze of Karen and Charles. Thanks also go out to Wayne Cameron who will not be standing again as Vice President, so not only will I be missing my lieutenant, but I also lose my “lucky tables”. Thanks also go out to the Club Delegates who represent their clubs with the best of intentions. It’s certainly pleasing for me as President to see things progressed in a harmonious manner.

In closing my report, I’d like to remind those present tonight to please remain after the AGM for some hospitality to help celebrate the many successes of Northern Area for 2016.

Pukekohe have decided to host the 2015 CNZ National Masters, and have requested the help of Northern Area to help support Pukekohe to run this event.

Frank mentioned that after prize giving at NA tournaments, there are generally a lot of unclaimed miniature trophies that are not collected by recipients. A suggestion was proposed that Robbie Wikaira to label the uncollected trophies so that NA knows who they belong to.

There was discussion about Interclub night ruling disagreements. It was decided that if no consensus can be reached on a particular ruling that there should be a re-rack and that frame replayed.

One of my players was unhappy with the performance of a senior referee at the Ian McInnes Memorial tournament. The senior referee had been drinking and his decision (which overruled a junior referee’s) may have had an impact on the result of the game (Steve: Expectations of referee’s needs to be consistent – to be addressed through the “to be formed” Northern Area Referee’s Association).

NA Interclub

This year has seen growth in the number of participating clubs with the inclusion of Papatoetoe RSA and Papakura RSA which has increased interclub participation. Whilst Papakura RSA fielded some players in our championship events, hopefully they will continue in 2014 along with players from Papatoetoe RSA.

2014 and Beyond

One of the aims of the Executive committee for 2013 was to make constitutional changes that would allow NA to expand the rules under which we play, alas this was not achieved, however raised concerns affecting our NI and National events have seen a dramatic change late in the year, which has seen the administration of these events removed from the current administrator (Jeff Bullus). As yet no one new has been appointed to oversee these tournaments, but it looks likely that the format for these prestigious tournaments could be returning to times of old, where these events were the pinnacle of game (not undermining the successes of those who’ve done well), but re-running the mana of their achievements.

Once again NA needs to develop a financial plan to help realise our capabilities and develop the association in all areas of Northern Area’s development.

Special thanks go out to the Executive Committee (in particular Karen Edwards who has been instrumental in ensuring our tournament operate efficiently. Thanks also go out to the Club Delegates who represent their clubs with the best of intentions. It’s certainly pleasing for me as President to see thing processed in a harmonious manner.

In closing my report, I’d like to remind those present tonight to please remain after the AGM for some hospitality to help celebrate the many successes of Northern Area for 2013.

Negative feedback was received from clubs that have played the 'Westie' ladies teams. Some of the host teams especially, have had difficulty with the change of nights. Chas Makahili endorsed Karen's comments. Roger: New Lynn RSA has 2 Ladies teams, whose matches clash with Northern Area dates, this needs to be resolved because the club is having difficulties meeting its needs.

Karen: It needs to be resolved for next year and beyond. This has been a problem for the last few years now. Results can be scanned and then emailed. Roger is happy for any suggestions to help resolve his club's dilemma.

NA Interclub This year has seen an unprecedented 50 teams participating in the Northern Area

interclub league broken into the following grades and divisions – Premier Grade (10), Grade 1, Division 1(9), Grade 1, Division 2 (9), Grade 2, Division 1 (10) and the Ladies Division (12). This represents at least 300 players participating in the Interclub league. Congratulations to the clubs that have seen some resurgence in their 8 Ball sections.

This year also saw (as a result of player feedback) the introduction of Minor semi-final trophies to recognise the teams that won their grades after 2 rounds of regulation season matches, and the winning teams this year were – Premiers (NLRSA), Grade 1- Division 1 (NZAG1), Grade 1-Division 2 (NZAG New), Grade 2-Division 1 (Otahuhu Diamonds), Ladies Division (Papatoetoe Pandas). Sadly, none of these teams eventually went on to win their respective grades.

Congratulations to the Major Grade winners; Premiers (Onehunga Blue), Grade 1 Division 1 (Howick Tigers), Grade 1 Division 2 (NLRSA Black Stix), Grade 2 Division 1(Howick Panthers), Ladies Division (NLRSA Black Catz).

In 2013, the Executive committee will be looking at the tournament calendar with a view to extending some of the 1-day events to a whole weekend.

A special mention must go to Wayne Cameron who was successful earlier in the year, in purchasing the tables and truck from our previous table supplier (Jason Kerrison), and I’m happy that Northern Area have negotiated a most reasonable rate with Wayne into the immediate future, which will allow Northern Area to keep the running of tournaments to a reasonable cost, that we have become accustomed to since Jason started supplying our tournament tables. This in itself is a coup compared with some of Wayne’s competitors out there in the market place.

CNZ North Island & National Events The results achieved this year aren’t as impressive as past year’s, however there are

Northern Area players who are popping up all over the country. Outstanding results for 2012 are dominated by our ladies with results that include;

North Island Ladies - Pairs winners C Billington & N O’Donnell (MTM). Singles –

Winner: Robyn Harris (PAT) Runner-up: Rosie Rawiri (MAN). Ladies Nationals – No standout results although Nita Clarkson was a beaten finalist in the Ladies singles event.

Outstanding results in the Open events: NI Open Singles: Runner-up - Jonathan Parker (NSH). National Open Pairs: Runners-up Les Nailor & Mike Herlihy (NSH), Open Singles: Runner-up – Matt Edwards (NSH)

2013 and Beyond More fine tuning of the Interclub format (We have had interest from non-NA affiliated

clubs specifically Papakura RSA and Henderson RSA). Plus we can’t determine next year’s format until we know the exact number of teams entering next year.

President’s Report: Personnel Changes

There have been no changes to the Executive Committee this year which is ideal for creating a stable platform to develop and review any initiatives that the association may wish to pursue. I would like to acknowledge the current executive committee, who include Wayne Cameron (Vice President), Wayne took up the president’s role at North Shore Cosmopolitan Club, so I know it has been challenging for him. Charlie Makahili (Secretary), Charlie is on the executive committee for the Manurewa RSA and on occasion their meetings have clashed with our monthly meetings. Frank Edwards (Treasurer), Frank has been supportive in providing monthly updates on the association’s expenditure and income. Lastly Karen Edwards (Results Compiler/ Tournament Controller), without her contributions and commitment the association would surely struggle to achieve what we have over the last year.

2011 Reflection NA Interclub This year was the first year that we saw results of promotion/relegation that was rolled out last year. This year we saw two new teams compete in the Premier Division (New Lynn RSA and Papatoetoe Pirates) sadly one of those teams didn’t quite meet the tough demands of the Premier Division consequently they roll back to the First Division. Congratulations to Onehunga Gold for securing a spot in the Premier Division for 2012, also congratulations go to Pukekohe for retaining their Premier Division Status for 2012. Congratulations to the different grade winner; Premiers – Papatoetoe CC, 1st Division – Onehunga Gold 2nd Division – Manurewa RSA Ladies – Papatoetoe Pandas. NA Championships (Ian McInnes Memorial, Ladies – Singles / Pairs, B Grade, Masters, Open Singles, Open & Mixed Pairs) All tournaments were well attended, the Ian McInnes Memorial numbers stabilised this year, there was growth in the Ladies championships, the B Grade championship showed a huge increase in player numbers with the Masters still with potential for growth. Our Open and Mixed Pairs events showed a small increase and our final tournament of the year was the Open Singles championship which was six players down on last year’s record setting numbers. Winner; Ian McInnes Memorial (Andrew Bosman - Onehunga), Ladies Singles (Ramona Belmont – New Lynn), Ladies Pairs (Nita Clarkson / Maria Haturini – Mangere CC 2nd year), B Grade (Trevor Higginson - North Shore), Masters (Glen Robust – New Lynn), Open Singles (Jimmy Henry – Glen Eden), Open Pairs (Bruce Anderson / Rod Buck – Manurewa CC), Mixed Pairs (Duane Hapimana / Michelle Martin – Manurewa CC). Congratulations all.

CNZ North Island & National Events The results achieved this year aren’t as impressive as last year’s results, however they do indicate the depth of skill level in Northern Area is closing in on the National Standard. Outstanding results for 2011 are dominated by our ladies with results that include; North Island Ladies - Pairs – R Toamau / S Wikaira-King (MAN) = 3rd. Singles – Ramona Belmont (NLRSA) = 3rd, Kay Anderson (PAK) = 3rd. Ladies Nationals – Pairs Winners – Sharon Wikaira-King & Rita Toamau (Mangere). Sadly no Northern Area players featured in the NI Open and National events.

2011 and Beyond More fine tuning of the Interclub format (Sadly we can only tweak what we have once we know our team numbers for 2012 and this won’t happen until the new year). Sort out our Trophy situation – where have all the Main trophies gone? Improve our resourcing especially at the tournaments we host e.g. Data projector and screen, digital camera to record a visual history of our player achievements (upload to our website) Develop a financial plan to help realise our capabilities and develop the association in all areas of Northern Area’s development.

A club card must be presented at Registration time OR written proof from Secretary/ Manager that he/she is a current financial member of that club.

Karen, as Tournament controller should have the discretion of decision at registration time... The Executive Committee will come up with the final ruling however on this matter.

Could someone not in the “field” be allowed to play in a tournament after the 1st Round has started? One player at the “B” Grade tournament was able to. Karen used her discretionary power to allow this player in. Rights and wrongs of this issue were further discussed.

Refereeing at the CNZ North Islands was poor (drinking alcohol while refereeing)

At the Ian McInnes‟ the refs were not cleaning the whites. They were instructed not to do so unless they were asked. A referee was having a beer during his lunch break before coming back on duty. Northern Area standards of refereeing have dropped.

Some Onehunga teams are getting little play due to lengthy breaks. This year seems to be dragging.

Roy Garrett (WEY) asked if a venue had been secured for this year‟s NA Masters Champs & B Grade Champs. To be discussed during general business.

Finance: Financial Report No financial report was submitted for PE 31 March 2011 to the meeting as it was prepared but forgotten at home. Frank apologised to the meeting.

Correspondence: 1. Letter received from Suzan Gardner regarding Interclub fixtures and the host teams responsibilities regarding tables used. It was iterated to the delegates present that the host club determines the tables used and the order of play. General Business: Interclub

Karen informed the meeting that results are being received in a timely manner, which allows up-to-date results being placed on our website within 5 days timeframe.

Boy Ormsby raised a concern regarding players taking phone calls during matches as was experience by Papakura vs. NZAG (Divison1). Diane Sloper (NZAG) confirmed the player concerned was her husband who was on call for his work at the time of the match, and apologised to the meeting for what happened, and that there was very little her husband could do, due to the nature of his employment.

Karen also received a call from Pukekohe asking whether non-members could be utilised as fill-ins. Pukekohe were advised they can use fill-ins but if they weren‟t members, the points would be forfeit. This question was posed by Pukekohe to help provide matches for their visitors who has travelled a great distance.

As a result of the recent earthquake, the 2011 Nationals will not be hosted by Cashmere Club. Papakura have put their club up to re-host this year‟s Nationals.

Papakura are running another 1 day tournament on Good Friday (Fri 22/4/11). First 40 paid entries only. Entries can be paid over the bar at Papakura. Entry $35.

Frank reassured everyone that a financial plan was moved at that meeting to be pursued as to how to best use the profit that the Association has accumulated.

J Haslam (OTA): A Good long year. The final seemed to flatten out however due to the demeaning nature of the name „Social Grade‟ which implied that the games played were not very serious in the „Open‟ Division (Karen apologised for her unintended

„insult‟ to the player in the grade). Needs to be addressed next year, so a worthy name (2

nd Division) will be given to the grade.

K Edwards (Points Compiler): The year has been great except for the hiccup of calling a grade „Social‟. Thanked Jason Rook for his help during the Pairs weekend and all the clubs for their cooperation in getting results in on time. The website format will need checking about document sizing.

A Rawiri commented on home clashes with their Premier and 1st Division team. This is

unavoidable at time due to table requirements and number of teams entered.

Ross was after feedback on how the ladies interclub are coping with matches best of 5 frames. The feedback has been neutral. No complaints have been received.

John gave the meeting an update on the status of the Otahuhu WC, and that they are operating on a month to month basis. No future directions are secured in concrete at this time. It‟s a very trying time for members and staff alike.

C.Makahili: Appreciated the efficient organisation of this year‟s start of the competitions, the prompt arrival of the draws and the general organisation. Apologised for being unable to attend the previous meeting and wished that all would be well for everyone concerned this season.

C.Gardner (PUKE): Nil.

W.Cameron: The Northern Area Association has come a long way since he last sat at the Chairman‟s place 30 odd years prior. The current Executive Committee and Delegates are doing a great job. This season has started off very well. The website has been a mighty asset. We need to look at our National Body: nothing, e.g. correspondence, has been received from it. Better communication needs to be developed and organisation needs to be updated so that we may have a better representation and be more involved. The Northern Area referees should be aligned with the National ones and have badges etc, as in the past , to recognise this. W.Cameron moved and Seconded by C. Makahili : To consult with Trevor Higginson, if he is interested in organising „Referees Training Sessions‟ for Northern Area Clubs members to the level of „Starter‟s badge‟ at least, and the Northern Area Executive Committee to sort out any financial commitments. Accepted.

2. MYOB – It has been decided that the MYOB programme is too complex for Northern Area‟s simple needs; therefore we won‟t be purchasing it.
