The global gas metering market currently represents $5.1 billion in annual investment ($3.2bn ex. China), split between legacy metering (non-communicating), smart meters, and commercial meters. Driven by near-term rollouts of smart meters in Europe, annual metering investment will peak at $5.6bn in the early 2020s. This dataset of over 10,000 data points covers 57 individual countries that comprise more than 95% of the global market. It projects the evolution of this market country-by-country with concrete quantitative data.

Compiled from Primary Sources This dataset was compiled from primary sources. Northeast Group collected primary sources from each of the 57 countries in order to build a bottom-up analysis of the global gas metering market. This ensures that the data is not a top-down estimate, compiled on a regional or global basis, but rather a country-by-country and segment-by-segment analysis that provides a detailed and exhaustive picture of the global market. Data Split by Segment The data is broken down into three primary segments, including 17 total lines of data for each country:

• Residential smart meters (communicating); • Residential legacy meters (non-communicating); • Commercial meters.

Forecasts to 2028 Northeast Group has projected the gas metering market out to 2028 for each of the 57 countries and for each segment of the market. These forecasts are compiled from primary source data run through Northeast Group’s proprietary forecasting models. Excel Format Allowing for Customization The dataset is compiled in Excel, allowing for easy data manipulation and customization by clients. An executive summary 42-slide PowerPoint presentation is also included as part of the research package.

Annual meter shipments are being driven by rollouts in the EU and China, but willslow down by the early-to-mid 2020sSeveral large EU countries are completing smart gas meter rollouts as part of larger EU smartmetering plans developed this decade. A few others are expected to begin soon, but most EUcountries will only deploy smart gas meters once existing meters expire. The “lumpiness” of theserollouts means that annual shipments will peak in the next few years. This will also occur at a moreextreme level globally once China finishes deploying gas meters to all of its residents in the early2020s.
