Chairman’s chat

Hello Everyone,

The months seem to whiz by so quickly, Summer has arrived and will be over in a flash; we have had some

very hot weather, too hot at times for me, and have been wishing for rain just to clear the air and

refresh the gardens. However, I have been attending some wonderful WI Birthday celebrations,

enjoying the company and, of course, the food!!

I have also been feeling guilty — people using the food bank in Malton are increasing in numbers and I

understand that this is the picture throughout the county. The banks need supplies. I know that many

WIs already support food banks in their area, but if you feel able to spare some dry or tinned goods,

including female hygiene products, then bring them to the Autumn Council Meeting; I will ensure that

they are delivered to the various banks around our area. The need for food banks in a prosperous

country like ours with a pretty generous social care system is shameful. People using the banks have to

be referred by a doctor, social worker, vicar or similar person so they are in real need. They are only

allowed three vouchers, so that is three meals!! I know that some believe that these people should be

able to care for themselves but so many people are just not coping in today’s world. Now that I’ve

depressed myself and feel even guiltier eating too much, I will wish you all a good August outing. Jennie

ACWW Representative – Barbara Capaldi

As you are all aware there have been some significant changes recently in ACWW. We are very fortunate to have ACWW’s Chief Executive Officer, Tish Collins, attending our Autumn Council Meeting to deliver a presentation on ACWW’s Women Empowered Fund.

Climate Ambassador – Aynsley Halligan

A friend and I drove to Bempton cliffs. The weather conditions seemed perfect, and the cooler coastal conditions would be a welcome break from the current heatwave inland (something we may have to get more used to in our increasingly unstable climate). I had committed to a RSPB-coordinated national ‘citizen science’ project to study what puffins are currently feeding their chicks. Numerous photos from amateur photographers all over Britain have been providing valuable data about how puffins are doing, and how the fish species caught and brought back to their chicks vary from the southern coasts and islands, right up to the outer Hebrides. The shifts in feeding patterns and breeding successes have already indicated a strong link with marine water temperatures, and their associated aquatic life. The general trend for warming waters around the UK are driving the normal sand-eels and other fish prey for puffins further

5

north. Sadly, we saw only a few puffins, and not one was carrying any fish of any species back to its nest. Although it was wonderful to see, hear and smell all this marvellous bird-life, we were left feeling very concerned for the welfare and success of perhaps the UK’s favourite little seabird. Pretty much all because of manmade climate change.

Science Co-ordinator - Glenis Wedzicha

The Science of Christmas, Seamer and Irton Memorial Hall, Main Street, Seamer, Scarborough, Tuesday 27 November OR Copmanthorpe WI Hall, Station Road, Copmanthorpe Thursday 6 December,7.00pm–9.00pm.Cost: £10.00. Members Only. Our distinguished speaker will provide a light-hearted look at the science-extravaganza which is Christmas: the food, the drink, the lights, the star in the East and, of course, the near-impossible task that Father Christmas has in getting round all the houses in time for the children to wake up. The evening will comprise talks and demonstrations, some of which will involve audience participation, with a festive refreshments break. Please indicate chosen venue on the application form. Book now, closing date: Tuesday 9 October.

Claxton & Sand Hutton were delighted and very proud to be a part of Radio York’s ‘cake & a cuppa’ event at Stamford Bridge village hall. These events are hosted by Radio York as part of their ‘combatting loneliness’ campaign throughout the region. Our small team of bakers donated around 150 portions of various cakes and spent the afternoon serving refreshments and chatting to guests. The tables groaned with cakes, which was just as well since around 250 people turned up for a very sociable afternoon. One of our members even entertained with some impromptu singing of popular songs; a first at these events. Local radio presenters Adam Tomlinson & Anna Wallace, interviewed President Angela Steele and Secretary Linda Spaven live on radio and both were much taken with our WI aprons! We would encourage other WIs to get involved

in these events if they come to a place near you as we found it a most rewarding experience. Angela Steele

On being a Delegate at NFWI Annual Meeting - It was daunting to be going to the Annual Meeting in Cardiff, especially the prospect of sharing a room with a stranger and having to report back. Would we like our room-mate, would we be able to take in enough and report back successfully? We need not have worried. First, we arranged to meet up the week before for a coffee and to get to know each other. We got on really well so that was a good start. We were given a beautifully crocheted White Rose each to identify us NYEFWI members. It was a friendly group on the coach and we enjoyed getting to know people and sharing information. The conference itself was very enjoyable with lots packed into the day. The chair, Lynne Stubbings, guided and managed the meeting with good humour. There was a lively debate around the resolution and at times the comments from the floor where challenging to listen too. The two speakers were both entertaining and informative and Huw Edwards responded well to a question regarding equal pay which had caused a lot of laughter and applause. The meeting ended with the chairman calling for all women to be accepted into the WI to thrive and flourish and called for the WI to change and embrace working women. The NFWI is to lead by example. On the way back we spent the time comparing our notes so that we could be sure we had not missed anything that we would report back on. Our thanks go to Frances Langley who went as Federation Steward and did an excellent job in looking after us. Our message is: If you get the opportunity to go to the Annual Meeting and are worried about what it will be like, don’t be and go! You will have an interesting, informative and enjoyable time. We did! Janet Cromack, Ebberston & Allerston WI and Janet Semple, Carlton WI and Selby Swans WI

Worsall held a Royal Wedding themed supper. The village hall was bedecked with Union Jack bunting, table decorations with flags and red, white and blue pompom flowers. We were asked to bring our wedding dresses or wedding albums and it was delightful to see various styles of wedding gowns hung up around the hall. We were encouraged to tell tales of our day or explain about the gowns. A prize was given to the lady who had been married the longest. We had quizzes and a sumptuous supper so although none of us had been invited to the Royal Wedding we certainly celebrated the occasion in style. Jan Gibb, President

Apart from our meetings, Ingleby Greenhow are having a very busy summer, making the most of the fantastic weather. The last week in June we had our summer outing when 33 members and friends enjoyed a good day at Barnard Castle, where it was market day, followed by a visit to Raby Castle, a very impressive place, very well cared for. This week 10 members walked up to see the sculpture of "The Man On The Moors" on the North Yorkshire Moors, followed by lunch at The Hub in Fryupdale where they were joined by two of the older members. The verdict was it was a great experience with spectacular views of the area where we live. Next week we have a visit to a local five acre garden followed by afternoon tea, so we are hoping the sun keeps on shining. Celia Thompson

At the Fused Glass workshop, 15 ladies assembled; only our leader Linda Cariss knew what we were letting ourselves in for. Lots of worried faces but Emma, our tutor, was fantastic. We were talked through and mentored all the time. We made a coaster in the morning, had a lovely lunch in the tea rooms, then had free rein to produce our piece of art which will be framed for us. At the end of the day 15 very happy ladies, several of whom want to return when the next course is arranged, went home with a smile on their faces and looking forward to seeing their finished pieces.

Askham Bryan’s healthy living & wellbeing week - Members enjoyed a walk from the village to an outlying farm for coffee and cakes on a gorgeous summer’s day –this was the wellbeing part! Members who could walk further then went to inspect the various crops and wild flowers margins while others had a walk round the garden. The next evening we enjoyed a one hour chair yoga class (with the lion posture!) followed by tasting of healthy eating recipes including Asian slaw, Baharat rice, zingy salmon salad, Weetabix cake and gluten free

biscuits. We did deviate from the healthy eating a bit by having a glass of wine with the tasting! Members then swapped recipes at the end of an enjoyable evening.

The President, Kathleen Horton, said "our members were delighted to help, especially as it supported the WI campaign.”
