AVOID CANCELLATIONS— REGISTER EARLYCourses that don’t meet the minimum number of participants get the Game of Thrones treatment: they get chopped. Cancelled. Terminated. That’s why we encourage you to register early. Course cancellation decisions are usually made two weeks before the course starts, so it’s a good idea to register before then.

WHERE DO YOU PICTURE YOUR CAREER IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?Do you need new skills to advance in your current career? Are you thinking of switching careers? Do you feel your professional path has hit a wall? If so, our networking, social media and professional development courses could be just the thing to help you refocus and recalibrate. Check out our Careers & Vocational section, page five.

FLASHES OF BRILLIANCE START WITH CREATIVE INSPIRATIONAre you the next F. Stop Fitzgerald? Take a writing course and find out. Or a photography course. You can even take a shot at mixed media or drawing. See Arts & Languages to see more creative courses, page 17.

LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE—SEE THE WORLD THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENSWhen you learn a new language you learn more than a new language. You gain unique insight into and appreciation of different cultures. As a bonus, you can put your new language skills to work when you travel. Our experienced language teachers share tips, secrets and handy things to know to get the most out of your travels. See Languages, page 19.

GOOD LIVING … IT’S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVETo be a happy human, you shouldn’t work all the time. Once in a while you should do something for you. Like enjoy a glass of wine. Or whisky. Beer also works. As does yoga. You can even learn to raise chickens and honeybees. You’ll be the hit of the neighbourhood. Our Good Living courses, beginning on page 20, can get you started.

SOFTWARE IN A SNAPYou see a lot of fun technology—like WhatsApp and Snapchat—being used in coffee shops, on transit, at the zoo, at birthday parties and giggle fests. But you don’t see them being used much in the workplace, do you? That’s because productivity software, such as MS Word or MS Excel, rule the office. So those two are probably good ones to learn. Just sayin’. See Computers & Technology on page 15 to check out all our computer courses.

COMPOSE YOURSELF: STUDY MUSICIt’s never too late to take up music. We have music lessons for babies, toddlers, kids and adults on a variety of instruments. We also have private and group lessons available. See CapU Community Music School starting on page 25 for all our offerings.

YOU CALL THE SHOTS WITH CUSTOMIZED TRAININGWhether your organization needs a workshop, a seminar, an intensive course or a longer, in-depth training program, we can provide a custom solution to meet your specific needs. See page 9 for details.

Beyond the First Draft:  Revising Your Work According to Ernest Hemingway, the first draft of anything is, well, we can’t politely print what he said, but we can tell you it rhymes with “quit” (which is something you should never do after your first draft). To ensure you never give up, this class, through a combination of lectures, in-class exercises, discussions and homework, takes a draft of your manuscript (either fiction or narrative non-fiction) through a recursive rewriting process. You’ll refine and improve such elements as points of view, narrative con-sistency, and structural design. The result will be a better first draft, and you’ll have the knowledge to effectively critique your own writing.

A brief history of each type is covered, followed by techniques on how to write each. Experiment with each genre through writing prompts and work-shopping. This exploration is designed to help you discover the genre that suits your writing voice the best, as well as touch upon next steps--self-publishing or traditional publishing.
