North Queensland Stadium February 2017 The $250 million North Queensland Stadium project will deliver an iconic, 25,000 seat regional stadium in Townsville in time for the 2020 NRL season. With a vision to become an internationally-recognised venue with world-class sustainable architecture and urban design, the stadium will celebrate what is great about North Queensland. Principal consultant, Cox Architecture and their team of specialist consultancies, including firms with Townsville offices such as 9Point9 Architects, Arup and RPS will continue to liaise with local stakeholders including Townsville City Council, the NRL and the North Queensland Cowboys to develop the stadium design ahead of works on site commencing in late 2017. The North Queensland Stadium is expected to generate up to 750 jobs through the design and construction phases, upskill local workers and engage local industry. In addition to jobs and industry training, the project will deliver a range of benefits to the region including: ∙ revitalisation of the CBD ∙ promotion of Townsville as an events city a catalyst for broader investment in the priority development area, the city and the region ∙ improved stadium facilities for athletes, staff and spectators ∙ social cohesion and community pride.

LocationThe North Queensland Stadium site will be located within the Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area adjacent to the Townsville Central Business District, between Ross Creek and Saunders Street.

Project fundingWith a total project budget of $250 million, North Queensland Stadium is a joint project of:∙ Queensland Government ($140 million) ∙ Australian Government ($100 million) ∙ Townsville City Council (land and enabling infrastructure)∙ National Rugby League ($10 million).

The stadium forms part of the Townsville City Deal signed in December 2016.

Project timeframes

Concept designThe North Queensland Stadium concept design features:∙ responsive tropical architecture and engagement

with the city ∙ a roof design inspired by the native Pandanus tree∙ a roof that covers 80 percent of the seating and is

designed to resist cyclonic wind conditions∙ an open grassed terrace at the northern end to allow

views to the city and Magnetic Island∙ generous arrival plazas, landscaped greens and

on-site parking∙ sports lighting incorporated into the stand roo�ng,

eliminating the need for light towers∙ stormwater run-o� management to protect water

quality of Ross Creek ∙ environmental sustainability initiatives∙ incorporation of locally-sourced materials where

possible∙ options for future further development on the site.

including a Field Club∙ Permanent stands including premium seating∙ Excellent expansion ability to 30,000 capacity∙ Permanent food and beverage concessions and

amenities throughout.

Proximity to CBDLess than 1 kilometre.

CapacitySeating for 25,000 and the potential to be expanded to 30,000 seats in future.

OperationStadiums Queensland will operate the stadium on behalf of the Queensland Government.

The stadium will be home to the North Queensland Cowboys and also used for a variety of events to attract visitors and investment to the region.

Managing contractorThe managing contractor will be appointed by mid-2017.
