This year marks the 75th anniversary of North Idaho College and the NIC Alumni Association is excited to be a part of the celebration. As part of the anniversary festivities, the

association will be hosting an all-class reunion this spring. Our alumni represent the past, present, and future of North Idaho College and alums are the most substantial part of the college’s history. We encourage all alums to participate in the reunion as well as other anniversary events.

In addition, on Jan. 24 the association will host its 10th annual Wild Game Feast, an annual fund-raiser with all proceeds supporting the NIC Alumni Association scholarship fund.

It is the mission of the NIC Alumni Association to stay connected with our alumni and friends. We invite you to become a member and be involved with the organization. For more information, contact the alumni office or visit our website at www.nic.edu/alumni.

NIC alum wins Really BIG Raffle houseNorth Idaho College wrote a chapter in Gus Foulk’s life when he graduated from the college in 1984. Then, more than 20 years later, a new chapter was written when he and his wife Cindy won the 2008 Really BIG Raffle grand prize $300,000 craftsman-style home in Coeur d’Alene.

This year also marked a historical milestone for the event, as the Really BIG Raffle celebrated its 15th year. Proceeds from the raffle exceeded $194,000, all of which will support student and program needs across campus.

For details about the raffle, visit www.nic.edu/foundation or call (208) 769-3271.

Two North Idaho College students were awarded scholarships through the Coeur d’Alene Garden Club.

NIC student Rose Duncan, a botany major from St. Maries, Idaho, received the Coeur d’Alene Garden Club Scholarship for $500. The award is given annually to a student seeking a degree in landscaping, horticulture, or other related fields.

Student Grey Beaudry, an art student from Hayden, Idaho, was awarded the Coeur d’Alene Garden Club Scholarship—Stephen Shortridge Award for $500. This award was named in honor of acclaimed local artist Shortridge, whose painting “My Backyard” was used for the 2007 Coeur d’Alene Garden Tour poster.

The Coeur d’Alene Garden Tour is an annual event featuring local gardens throughout the community. Proceeds benefit various local charities, including annual scholarships through the NIC Foundation.

For more information on establishing a scholarship at North Idaho College, contact the NIC Foundation/Development Department at (208) 769-5978.

Wild Game Feast: Another wild successThings get a little wild each winter when the NIC Alumni Association hosts the Wild Game Feast, an event highlighted with a five-course, gourmet meal featuring wild game cuisine. More than 125 people attended the 2008 Wild Game Feast with all proceeds providing scholarships to deserving NIC students. Over $43,000 has been awarded to 54 deserving students since 2000.

The 10th annual Wild Game Feast is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at North Idaho College. Reserve tickets by calling (208) 769-5978, emailing [email protected], or buying online at www.nic.edu/alumni.

NIC Alumni Association honors outstanding alumniThe North Idaho College Alumni Association recently named this year’s outstanding alumni award recipients.

Distinguished Alumni Achievement AwardAlumna Sarah Palin was chosen to receive the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, its most prestigious award, for her local, state, and national political achievements.

Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, but later moved to Alaska. She attended North Idaho College for two semesters as a general studies major in the spring of 1983 and the fall of 1983. She later studied journalism and political science at the University of Idaho, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1987.

Palin was elected governor of Alaska in 2006. Most recently, Palin was selected as the vice presidential candidate on the Republican ticket for the 2008 election.

“NIC has the pleasure of seeing our alums go on to successful careers in government and private industry throughout the world,” said NIC Alumni Relations Coordinator Sara Fladeland. “This is another achievement in a long list of accomplishments for Gov. Palin as well as NIC alums.”

The NIC Alumni Association Board of Directors notified Palin in June 2008 that she would be the recipient of the 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

Alumni of the Year AwardJon Parson was selected as the recipient of the 2008 Alumni of the Year Award for his commitment and dedication to North Idaho College and the NIC Athletics Department.

Parson was an All-American and Academic All-American when he wrestled for NIC in the heavyweight/275 pound division. He earned an associate’s degree from NIC in 1993 and continued his wrestling career at the University of Wyoming.

He has been on the NIC Booster Club Board of Directors for more than 10 years and has served as president since 2007.

“The family atmosphere of NIC’s athletics programs keeps me coming back year after year,” Parson said.

Honorary Alumni of the Year AwardSheila Wood was selected as the 2008 Honorary Alumni of the Year for her commitment and dedication to North Idaho College.

Wood worked in the NIC Tutoring Center for two years before serving as an English instructor for 14 years. Wood served as a member of the NIC Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2004, as a volunteer for the NIC Foundation’s Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign from 2004 to 2006, and is currently serving as a committee member for NIC’s 75th anniversary Diamond Jubilee Committee.

While serving as a trustee, Wood proposed that a college history be written to preserve historical facts and valuable stories that were in danger of being lost. For the past nine years, Wood has supported the project by chairing the NIC History Committee and working closely with author Fran Bahr. The project came to fruition in the fall of 2008 when the book “The Gathering Place: A History of North Idaho College” was published.

“Wood’s dedication to NIC will live forever through her vision and commitment to this history book,” Fladeland said.

Scholarships open doors for studentsThe North Idaho College Foundation awarded a record number of scholarships during the 2007-2008 school year. A total of $472,747 in scholarships was awarded to 537 students. These scholarships were made possible through contributions from literally hundreds of donors wishing to make dreams come true for students who may not otherwise have been able to afford the cost of education.

To donate to existing scholarships or to establish a new scholarship, call (208) 769-5978 or go to www.nic.edu/foundation.

Scholarship recipients, donors connect

“The scholarships I received allowed me to obtain a higher education and better myself through life learning lessons. My scholarships have opened doors that before, I did not even know existed. A scholarship donation is an investment. What better to invest in than the future leaders, workers, and investors of tomorrow.”

Elizabeth Bell, Sandpoint NIC psychology graduate and recipient of the Earl and Eva Ogg Memorial Scholarship and the Roy and Leona Nelson Foundation Scholarship

Scholarship HighlightsDonors can establish scholarships or contribute to existing funds. The North Idaho College Foundation works with each donor to set up the criteria for which the fund is distributed. The NIC Foundation is privileged to steward the following newly established, permanently endowed funds:

Jesse and June Clay Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Sheila Wood in memory of her parents, Jesse and June Clay. Jesse and June, who both came of age during the Great Depression, always believed in the value of education and extending to others opportunities that were not available to them. The scholarship supports students who are motivated to succeed, but lack the opportunity to pursue higher education due to obstacles in life including, but not limited to, financial barriers, family responsibilities, medical conditions, and other obstacles.

Charles and Joanne Sutton Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Charles and Joanne Sutton to support students from Latah County who are enrolled in academic programs at NIC. The Suttons met while attending North Idaho College in the fall of 1952. Joanne graduated from high school in Coeur d’Alene and decided to attend NIC because of its location. Charles, who moved to the area from New Jersey, was attending NIC on a basketball scholarship. The couple

later married in 1953. As alums and former educators, the Suttons believe NIC offers high caliber instruction, which is why they decided to establish a scholarship. The Suttons currently reside in Moscow, Idaho.

Raymond Vaudreuil, Sr., Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Raymond Vaudreuil, Sr., by his colleagues at Hope Realty. Vaudreuil, who passed away on Nov. 6, 2005, was the founder of Hope Realty. He supported those who experienced hardships. His colleagues remember that Vaudreuil’s help was never offered for personal gain or for his business—he gave because he cared about the wellbeing of others. The scholarship supports students facing financial hardships.

Scholarship recipients gather for a group photo during the 2007 NIC Foundation Fall Scholarship Celebration.

Each November, the North Idaho College Foundation brings together donors and the many deserving students who benefit from their philanthropy for the annual Fall Scholarship Celebration as a way for both groups to learn more about each other.

Enrollment up 4.4 percent for Fall 2008 North Idaho College posted a 4.4 percent increase in credit enrollment for Fall Semester 2008 with an increase of 206 students from last year’s enrollment of 4,650, bringing the total headcount this year to a record 4,856.

In turn, the number of students applying at NIC was up and an increased availability of scholarship funds likely helped provide the means necessary to bring new students in, said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson.

“We provided 116 new scholarships to students in the 2007-2008 school year, accounting for more than $470,000—a record amount,” Anderson said. “Thanks to our generous donors, those figures will most likely increase again this year.”

Board approves five-year strategic planThe North Idaho College Board of Trustees approved the 2008-2013 NIC Strategic Plan, a set of goals and objectives that will guide the course of the college over the next five years.

Community members, NIC employees and students, and the general public were involved in each phase of the planning.

“This plan requires the investment of resources, human, physical, and financial, from within the college as well as from its community,” said Vice President for Student Services Eric Murray. “NIC believes that the success of this plan equates to success in enhancing the quality of life for the people of North Idaho.”

Themes of the plan include programs, student support, college communications and climate, finance and funding, college image and relations, diversity and human rights, and physical resources.

The 2008-2013 NIC Strategic Plan is available online at http://www.nic.edu/planning/strategicplan/.

“A record number of students continue to enroll at North Idaho College, taking the skills, training, and education they’ve gained back into the community as members of our workforce. Higher numbers at North Idaho College ultimately translate to a stronger local economy. We are proud to fulfill this crucial role in our community.”

Priscilla Bell, president North Idaho College

Annual Cost of Education 2007-2008

North Idaho College

Average of all Idaho public four-year universities

National average of public four-year universities

National average of four-year private schools

Tuition $2,110 $4,329 $6,185 $23,712

Figures comprise annual tuition and fees costs for full-time residents. National averages provided by collegeboard.com.

Although NIC provides wonderful educational opportunities at a reasonable price, the reality is that the majority of students would be unable to attend college without the assistance of scholarships, grants and student loans. As the population of the college increases, so does the need for additional scholarship support.

North Idaho College makes an important contribution to the social, cultural, and economic quality of life in the community. Like public institutions everywhere, NIC must look beyond its traditional sources of support. Property taxes, state appropriations, and student tuition must be supplemented with private donations if the college is to maintain the level of educational excellence the people of North Idaho deserve.

Thank you for your investment through the north Idaho College Foundation, which helps nIC students in their pursuit of a quality education and brighter future.

Post Falls businesswoman touches generations by naming NIC in her will

Edith Polston knew the meaning of the word community. She was a successful businesswoman, having owned Post Falls Hardware with her husband Charles “Poly” Polston for 27 years.

But to Polston, giving back was what being a member of the community was really about.

Polston was a member of the charities Royal Neighbors of America and the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years. She also supported organizations such as Shriners of North America and Children’s Village.

Friends and family say Polston believed it was important to support organizations that helped people better themselves, such as North Idaho College. A savvy businesswoman, Polston believed in the value of an education and therefore named the college in her will. She passed away in January 2008, but continues to help and inspire others through her gift.

“By simply naming the NIC Foundation as a beneficiary in her will, Edith has left a legacy that will live on forever,” said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson. “The proceeds of her gift will be managed in perpetuity and will generate earnings that will annually be directed to fund student and program needs. What an honorable way to reach out and help the community.”

To designate the NIC Foundation as a beneficiary in your will, retirement plan, or life insurance call (208) 769-5978.

“The Trades and Industry Scholarship has made it possible for me to be able to return to school after 15 years and gain the education I need in order to compete in a demanding job market. Raising my daughter by myself and going to school is difficult and I would have never been able to afford to pay for school and take care of her at the same time without a scholarship. I cannot thank the donors enough for their generosity. ”

David Coker, Coeur d’Alene Diesel Technology student
