Health and Safety Plan • Cloth face coverings will be worn by all staff and adults
entering the Art Center. It is highly recommended for chil-dren as well.
• Social distancing will be practiced during all activities. • Temperature scans will be taken upon arrival. Anyone who
scans above 100.4 will be refused admittance. • Surface sanitizing/cleaning will be done on an accelerated
schedule. • Hand sanitizer will be available and handwashing will be
encouraged. • CDC guidelines are used to implement these health and
safety measures. • Anyone who exhibits signs of illness or has been exposed
to someone exhibiting signs of illness should not attend Art Center activities.
• Signs will be posted throughout the building to remind visitors and students to follow these protective measures.
• Classes will be limited to 10 students (or less) in order to practice social distancing.
• Pottery studio classes will be capped at 6 students. Partici-pants will sit at every other wheel.
• Personal tools are recommended. Class tools will be availa-ble and cleaned after each class.

Explore oil and acrylic painting in a relaxed atmosphere. Experienced painters can work to develop their personal style or try a new technique. A-86 Paint Like Bob Ross

You know you’ve always wanted to try it! Those “happy little trees and rocks” appear like magic. Here’s your chance to give it a try. We will be painting landscapes in the style of legendary Bob Ross. You’ll be guided through the process step by step. All supplies will be provided as you create your masterpieces. A-77 Exploring Watercolors

Douglas Brown paints with a focus on controlled realism, and you can learn the secrets of his technique. Each class will start with a short demo of the subject of the week. All students will receive individual attention and will work at his or her own pace. All levels are welcome. Materials list provided.

This class will take you through the basics from what supplies you will need, what painting techniques are unique to watercolor and the step by step process of completing watercolor paintings. A-07 Acrylic Painting: Still Life, Vibrant Color
Ages 12 - Adult, Registration deadline: October 19
Learn to use acrylic paint to create a realistic still-life. We will discuss basic color theory, the color wheel, glazing, and texture. A basic understanding of drawing is a definite advantage, but not a requirement! We will do a couple of still-life setups over the course of the six weeks and instructor will demonstrate skills and techniques as well as providing continual feedback to students. A-54 Monday Night Pottery

This class for all levels of experience will incorporate aspects of both hand building and wheel throwing. Beginners through advanced students are welcome to hone their skills from building and throwing to the glazing process. Come enjoy an exciting clay-filled evening! A-05 Wheel thrown and Hand Built Pottery

Have you always wanted to learn to make pottery on the wheel? Do you like making things by hand? Do both! In this class we will use hand building techniques and the wheel to make mugs, bowls, vases and other forms of your choice. Enjoy a relaxing morning with clay! A-46 Tuesday Afternoon Pottery

If you have always wanted to try the wheel, hand build, or need a refresher, this class is for you. Students will create various clay projects of their own choice in a relaxed studio with personal attention. Stoneware and Raku clay available. The last class focuses on glazing. A-35 Teen Drawing & Skill Building
Ages 12-15, Registration deadline: September 8
This drawing class is designed for those who love to draw and paint but could use a stronger academic foun-dation. Our four sessions will focus on drawing still-life by emptying out our pockets and purses, exploring the dichotomy between manmade objects and organic forms, learning to draw a human skull and covering fa-cial anatomy, and finally, a session where students will draw themselves in a mirror. Designed to be focused yet unintimidating, this course will give important crea-tive skills while expanding creative horizons. Materials list provided.

Have you ever told yourself "I can't draw"? In that case, this class was made for you. Anyone can learn to draw, they just need the right foundation. In this course, we will explore what it means to draw using pencils, char-coals, and even an eraser. We’ll discuss composition, variety of line, mass, hatching and cross-hatching. Drawing is the foundation of all visual mediums, so whether you paint or sculpt or work in any other media, drawing is a valuable skill! This will be an encouraging and supportive environment; leave your fear at the door. Materials list provided.

Being able to draw what you "see" is the foundation for other art experiences. This class will work on building up your drawing skills through observational exercises that will improve your realistic drawings. This class is for all levels of ability especially those who say they can't draw! All materials included.

A-15 The Art of Hand Lettering
Ages 16-Adult, Registration deadline: September 17
This class covers the entire lettering process from pen-cil sketch to inked drawing to digital* finish. We'll start with the basics of drawing individual letterforms and work up to creating your own hand lettered illustrations based on briefs given in class each week. Chock full of tips and tools for creating concept-driven pieces, there will be in-class demonstrations and one-on-one instruc-tor critiques. This class is perfect for beginners wanting to learn the basics as well as intermediate students looking to dive deeper into incorporating hand lettering in their professional work. Please bring materials to work in class each week: drawing paper, graph pa-per, pencils, fine and broad tip markers/Sharpies, tracing paper and ruler.
*Digital processes will be taught, but not required to create work in this class. If desired, students should have access to a scanner or scanning app on their phone/tablet, and Pho-toshop or Illustrator.

A-31 Landscape Weaving Ages 16-Adult Registration deadlines: 9/22 & 10/13 This class explores a new way of creating landscapes by using various weaving techniques. Students begin by drilling and warping a picture frame, then learn ways of weaving and working with fiber to create unique pictures. Please bring: 8x10 or 10x12 wooden picture frame-1”-2” wide (see sample; remove glass), drill, 1/8” drill bit, assorted yarns. Instructor: Ruthann Farinacci Tuesdays, 4 sessions each

In this workshop, artist Olga Brindar will demonstrate the basics of facial proportions, how the skull relates to the facial features, and demonstrate a portrait drawing from start to finish. In the second half of this workshop, students will work from life at their easels, with hands-on feedback from the instructor, followed by a positive and supportive end-of-workshop critique with instructor & peers. WS-34 Clay Pumpkins & Gourds Ages 12-Adult, Registration deadline: September 21 Fall is here and you need some new decorations! Using some hand building techniques (no experience needed), you will create clay pumpkins and gourds for your fall decor. We will have the real thing to look at for inspiration as we form our pieces. Once the pieces have been bisque fired, you will return to add the finishing touches as you apply the ceramic glazes. The pieces will be fired again and will be ready for you to pick up before Halloween! All materials included. Instructor: Diane Pontoriero Dates: Mondays 9/28 & 10/12 2 sessions Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Member: $50 Nonmember: $70 WS-91 Portrait Painting in Any Medium - from Photo Ages Teen-Adult Registration deadline: September 26 Using the fundamentals of how to construct a portrait using shapes, values, lighting, problem solving and more will be the first part of class one, the remainder of time will be spent on your project. The second class will focus on your portrait project. Demos will be done in oils, student should have knowledge of how to use their medium (no instruction on medium given). WS-74 Creating Your Designs & Patterns Ages Teen-Adult Two workshops to choose from! Learn how to create a good design/pattern using basic drawing elements from start to finish. This class will help those who want to use their art for mandala, paper, pottery, quilting, zentangle© or any other project that requires an organized or free flowing design or pattern. WS-33 Make a Clay Tiki Mug Ages 11-Adult Registration deadline: October 29 What's your Tiki character? Take this fun workshop to design a one-of-kind Tiki mug with your own unique character. It can be a traditional Tiki face, an animal or whatever you design. You will be carving your design on a wheel thrown stoneware cylinder and picking a colorful glaze to finish the piece. (No clay experience needed-cylinders are pre-thrown.) Mugs will be food/drink & dishwasher safe. All materials included. WS-71 Fused Glass Ornament Workshop
Ages 10-Adult, Registration deadline: October 31
Add some special handmade glass ornaments to your Christmas tree, use them as window decorations or give them as a gift. You will create 2-3 ornaments in the workshop using a variety of glass colors, frits and stringers. All materials included.

WS-04 Pysanky for the Holidays
Ages 10-Adult, Registration deadline: November 7
So you thought Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) were just for the spring! Well, in this workshop we will be using Pysanky (Batik Egg Writing) technique to create unique Holiday ornaments. You will use the traditional wax resist method on the eggs to create winter/holiday themed eggs that can be used as tree ornaments or gift giving. All materials included.

This workshop gives an information-packed, interactive look into how artists use color, from the importance of complementaries, to why purple isn't a real color. All materials included. WSC-16 How to Draw Clouds Ages 10-12 or Teen (see below) This is a very simple but informative lesson on how to draw clouds. We'll cover cumulus clouds and sunsets, and why they look and work the way they do. All materials included. WSC-21 Clay Gifts for Holiday Giving Ages 7-12 Registration deadline: November 21 With the Holidays approaching, now is the time to create one of a kind hand made gifts to give to special people in your life. You will be working with clay using the slab building technique to create a special lidded box and a decorated mug. You will come back for a second session to put the finishing touches on your pieces with a large selection of bright, colorful glazes. The pieces will be food, microwave, and dishwasher safe. The North Hills Art Center (NHAC) has successfully provided art and arts enrichment to our community for 58 years. We have not done this alone. It has been made possible by countless volunteer hours. Help us keep this great local asset going. Volunteer. Every hour counts!
Ways you can be involved at the NHAC:
Event Planning- decorating, set up, planning, and participating to insure the smooth operation of events
Fundraising - brainstorming, planning, and implementation of new ideas
Gallery/Traveling Art Shows - assist with drop off, pick up, hanging of artwork; clean up or set up of receptions
Garden - cleanup & planting (spring & fall), general maintenance and weeding
Maintenance - General help around the center: painting, handiwork, etc.
Office Coverage - assist with vacations and/or lend an extra hand
Outreach - assist with our outreach programs
Artisan Markets - assist with drop off, pick up, set up, inventory and/or break down
