University of Minnesota Display & Trial Garden 2018 Flower Trial Summary North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) – Grand Rapids, MN

Cultivars This year, 230 unique cultivars were evaluated in field plots, baskets and containers. In addition to the field plot, there were 24 shade plots, 122 hanging baskets and 67 containers included in the evaluation. Greenhouse Growing Summary Both seed and vegetative materials were received this year. Vegetative plants were in exceptionally good condition; however, aphids were received with a shipment of plugs. Vegetative materials received were kept physically isolated from all other plantings and therefore prevented the spread of aphids. Greenhouse growth and development were both excellent this year, with a near 100 percent success rate. Only one cultivar did not successfully germinate. All begonias were successfully germinated and trialed this year due to a new germination process that had great success. A new overhead watering system and an updated shade cloth in the greenhouse made a positive difference for successful germination as well as positively affecting plant growth and overall health. Grow lights were not used this season. Water-soluble 20-10-20 fertilizer was used to promote growth and Malathion was sprayed to help control aphids. Planting Date All seedlings were transplanted to the field during the 23rd and 24th week, starting June 7th. Seedlings were transplanted into rows 4 feet apart, with 10 plants per plot on 1-foot centers. Hanging baskets (12” x 7”) and containers (large: 20” x 18” and small: 18” x 10”) were potted in late May and late June, respectively, with 3-5 plugs per basket or container. Hanging baskets were set out in early June, while containers were put out the third week of June. Weather Conditions and Frost Date The 2018 growing season started with cooler than average temperatures and below normal moisture. The month of May had close to average precipitation with slightly warmer temperatures. Temperatures were above normal going into June with highs in the upper 80s. Both June and July were average for temperatures and precipitation, while August had average temperatures but well below average for moisture. In August, there was no measurable rainfall for 23 days straight. September was back to normal for both temperature and precipitation, with the growing season officially ending due to frost on September 29.

Fertilization For the field flowers, fertilizer was broadcast at planting (40 pounds of N per acre of 20-5-10) as well as applied in a liquid starter drench (10-52-10). In early July, 20-5-10 was broadcast at the rate of 40 pounds of N per acre. For containers and baskets, Osmocote, a slow-release fertilizer, was added to the soil mix. Liquid fertilizer (20-10-20) was applied at half-strength in the greenhouse and then increased to 1x once they were set outside. Hanging baskets and containers were fertilized once a week through August 2, with no additional fertilizer applied after that date. Irrigation Overhead irrigation was done as needed for the main field planting. Drip emitter irrigation was used for all hanging baskets and containers with timers set to water three times per day for a designated time frame. Baskets and containers were monitored closely for proper moisture levels throughout the season and watering timeframes were adjusted as needed. Weed Control XL2G (surflan) herbicide was applied just after planting in the main field plot for pre-emergent weed control. Rototilling between rows was performed later in the season to augment the herbicide. Hand weeding was used to control weeds between plants throughout the season. Disease Problems/Pest Control Overall, disease was minimal in all three locations. Aster yellows was less of an issue than previous years and therefore Aria was not needed to control leaf hoppers; instead, affected plants were manually removed from the field. Aphids were an issue in the greenhouse and affected some of the calibrachoa varieties, essentially stunting their growth. Once these varieties were set outside, natural predators helped eliminate the infestation and they subsequently recovered and flourished. Deadheading Baskets and containers were deadheaded on a regular basis, as needed. Field plantings were deadheaded in mid-August in preparation for Visitor’s Day. In addition to deadheading, petunia hanging baskets were trimmed back in late July. Explanation of Flower Evaluation Plant performance was evaluated by current and former staff of the NCROC and Itasca County Master Gardeners. Plants were evaluated twice during the growing season; an early rating was given during August 1- 15 and a late rating during August 16 – 31. Ratings were based on a scale of 0 – 5, with 5 being the highest score and indicating excellent performance. The scores given by the evaluators are compiled and averaged. This average score is the final result reported. Plants are rated for a number of criteria such as uniformity of growth, health/vigor, flower production, insect/disease resistance and uniqueness. The top 10 flowers are based on the early plant rating only.

General Performance Summary This season was a vast improvement for all flower cultivars in comparison to the previous year. The rate of fertilizer applied to both baskets and containers was lowered significantly from the previous season, resulting in improved performance. Some flower varieties performed better in containers or baskets than in the field due to the dry conditions during the month of August. Although overhead irrigation was used in the field to supplement moisture, it was not sufficient enough to compensate for the lack of rainfall. Moisture levels in both containers and baskets were more controlled and therefore performed better than in the field. The shade flowers this year were especially impressive with the begonia and coleus cultivars being highly rated. In particular, the coleus ColorBlaze® Chocolate Drop and ColorBlaze® Golden Dreams™ performed well late into the season. Euphorbia Diamond Mountain™ was outstanding in both the field and basket locations with near perfect uniformity. Celosia varieties also did very well in both the field and containers, with First Flame™ Purple being particularly favored by our evaluators for the stunning color. Zinnias performed well in containers, with Elegance Scarlet and Swizzle™ Scarlet & Yellow both producing many flowers late into the season. Events Events at the North Central Research and Outreach Center included Visitor’s Day on Thursday, August 23 and several field tours during the season for garden groups and visitors. Petunia - Supertunia

Vista® Bubblegum®

This variety was a top pick due to its resilience for being both

heat and drought tolerant. The flower color varies slightly with

a darker center to give a nice depth to the bloom. While the

blooms appear stunning as ground cover in your beds, they can

also add a nice cascade in a hanging basket.

Verbena

EnduraScape™ Pink Bicolor

A great plant for a spectacular

look in your landscape. The dark

foliage make the blooms appear

bright and vibrant, while direct-

ing the eye to the subtle striations

within the petal. This canna will

add both height and unique color

to your flower bed or containers

with minimal maintenance.

For the second year in a row,

this petunia has made our top 10 list. Known for both durabil-

ity and dependability, this low maintenance petunia will give

you a long lasting splash of pink in your flower beds, baskets

and containers.

Canna - Cannova®

Bronze Scarlet

Annual flower trials are hosted at the North

Central Research and Outreach Center.

These trials are an evaluation of specific flower varieties and how well they perform in

a field environment, a hanging basket and/or a

container. Companies such as All-America

Selections, Proven Winners, Syngenta,

Floranova, and many others host their annual

trials here at the NCROC. We grade the flowers for such criteria as color, uniformity,

uniqueness, drought tolerance and insect/

disease resistance. This information is made

available in our annual report to the flower

companies and is available on our website:
