  • His LifeHe was born on Feb. 3 1894 in New York City.At age 14 he transferred from high school to the Chase Art School. He transferred to 2 more art schools before during this time he did artwork for St. Nicholas magazine and Boys Life magazine.His first big break came when at age 19 he illustrated the book Tell Me Why.

  • His CareerAt age 19 he became the Art Editor for Boys Life.During WWI he tried to enlist in the Navy but he was rejected due to be underweight. He instead was given the commission to be a military artist.In 1916 he got his first painting published as the cover for the Saturday Evening Post. This would start a 40 year career with this magazine.

  • Personal LifeRockwell was married three times. His second wife Mary Barstow(a school teacher) he had 3 children with and they remained married until her death in 1959. He remarried (another teacher) in 1961to Mary Punderson. It was Mary that help found the Norman Rockwell Museum.

  • His WorkRockwell did most of his most famous work while he work for the Saturday Evening Post. The Four Freedoms which was also done to help the war effort and help sell war bonds. He also did work for Popular Science and illustrated over 40 books. He was commissioned to do portraits of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. In 1977 Rockwell received the the Presidential medal of Freedom.

  • More RockwellAfter leaving Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell worked for Look Magazine. It was at look that he created some of his most controversial images. He dealt with what controversial topics as well as major historical events (i.e.segregation) that were taking place during that time. (i.e. man landing on the moon)

  • A Full LifeNorman Rockwell worked up until his death. His images gave so much to the fabric of our country. Its truly chronicles the our society, history, and memories that generations far after ours will enjoy. Rockwell passed away on Nov. 8th 1978 at age 84 of Emphysema.

  • As A Side NoteRockwells work is impart exhibited at Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge. Rockwell produced over 4,000 works. Many of them were destroyed by fire at his studio. The remaining works, which are many are held either in museums or private collections.During his life and even after may art historians have been dismissive of Rockwell's work due to the fact he was an illustrator. However, his artwork has had a major impact on other artist as well popular culture.If the art critics are correct about Rockwells importance in Art History then he work titled Breaking Home Ties should not have sold for $15.4 million at a 2006 Sothebys auction.
