Message to the Community — from David Whitaker

I’ve always known Norman Regional Health System

offers the highest quality care, is a great place to work

and creates an enormous impact on our community.

This year, many others have taken notice as evidenced

through our national awards and recognition. The

Health System has won these honors due to the efforts

of our dedicated team who work everyday to change

how patient care is delivered, who reach out to our

community in order to improve health for all ages and

who insist on quality thinking and quality care.

Not only are we focusing on our quality care but as a team are working

to expand our Health System to care for growing communities in our

service area. Summer of 2009 will see our move to the new HealthPlex

campus. Even though the transition is several months away, we have

teams of dedicated employees and physicians reviewing and planning

the movement of multiple departments to the new HealthPlex hospital.

We’ve also added a new Metabolic Surgery unit to meet the needs of

increasing numbers of bariatric surgery patients. The newest member

of the Health System family, Moore Medical Center, has successfully

completed its first national Joint Commission survey and is seeing

increasing numbers of patients. Many of the patients are being seen

by physicians recently recruited in one of the most amazing years for

physician recruitment.

New Vice Presidents Join Executive TeamNorman Regional has welcomed four new vice presidents to our leadership team.

As the Health System grows, these dedicated professionals will provide vision and

guidance on our journey.

Meegan Carter was promoted to vice president of system access and managed

care. In her new position, Carter will oversee the Health System’s revenue cycle

departments, managed care, health information management and NRHS’s clinics.

Ken Hopkins is NRHS’s vice president of finance. In his new position, Hopkins

will provide administrative oversight to the departments of decision support,

finance, materials management and management service organization. He joins us

from Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston.

William B. McMillan, MD, CPE, is our new vice president of medical affairs.

Dr. McMillan is an accomplished physician executive with 18 years experience in the

clinical practice of internal medicine and 15 years in healthcare administration and

performance improvement. He received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh

School of Medicine.

Daryle Voss has been named vice president and chief administrative officer for

the HealthPlex campus. Voss initially will be focused on the operational planning

and preparation for the opening of the HealthPlex hospital. He joins Norman

Regional from Matagorda County Hospital District in Bay City, Texas.

Assisting in patient care is the newly implemented health information

system which was brought online just this year throughout the entire

health system. Also brought online was a secure electronic medical

record which will allow for quicker access to secure health information

by credentialed medical staff members and health system staff.

Reaching out into the community we’ve seen more than 11,000 children

in regional schools and seen a stabilization of obesity rates we believe

due in part to our community education, Fit Families program and the

summer SNAP camp. More than 1,700 regional community members

participated in our ongoing Heart and Sole walking program this past

year. Cindy Rosenthal, Norman’s mayor endorsed and participated

in this healthy walking program. We appreciate her dedication to

achieving a healthy lifestyle and supporting our ongoing community

health programs and outreach.

On behalf of the Hospital Authority, our medical staff and the 2,900

members of our healthcare team, we thank you for allowing us to serve

you.

Hospital Authority — “Vision for the Future”

Norman Regional Health System continues to advance and expand

the healthcare we provide to our community. Our mission is to

ensure every citizen in our service area has convenient, easy access

to healthcare that is delivered by state-of-the-art equipment and

compassionate individuals.

In 2004, Norman Regional Health System developed a 25-year master facility plan

which included the construction of a new medical complex located at Interstate 35

and Tecumseh Road. What was once an expanse of field and a blueprint is now taking

shape with brick, glass and steel as the HealthPlex hospital nears its completion. Set

to open in summer of 2009, the HealthPlex hospital will add 135 beds to the region.

It will house a three-story Women and Children’s Pavilion, and a five story tower

for Cardiology, Orthopedics and Neurosurgery. The hospital will also contain eight

operating rooms, with the capability for further expansion. To encourage healthy

activities and habits in our community, the HealthPlex campus will also feature a

beautiful walking trail.

“We are very excited to see the HealthPlex open to the community,” said Cheryl

A. Parsons, chair of the Norman Regional Hospital Authority. “After years of careful

planning and many hours of dedicated work from our team, the hospital will welcome

its first patients next summer. From the architects and construction workers who

helped to build it, to the physicians, nurses and employees who will run it, each

individual deserves the community’s respect for striving to bring them a state-of-

the-art facility.”

Norman Regional also has big plans for our Porter Avenue Campus, which will be

renovated once the transition of some services has been completed. Moore Medical

Center continues to offer outstanding care to its service area and has added more

surgeons, family practitioners and other healthcare experts to its facility.

One way we can gauge our success in achieving our vision is by others complementing

the positive changes we are making. This year many have taken notice and Norman

Regional has been the recipient of many national and regional awards. We were

named one of the Top 100 Places to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare,

an industry publication. Norman Regional Health System was the only Oklahoma

healthcare provider on the list. Our programs such as our collaboration with Norman

Public Schools, our Healthy Community initiative and our clinical practices have all

received state and national recognition.

Norman Regional is dedicated to striving for excellence in every facet of our

organization and expanding that excellence to everyone in our community. For the

future, in every corner of our region, we will be here doing our best to be the

best.

Excitement is growing as the HealthPlex hospital nears its completion.

With a $130 million dollar budget and about 400,000 square feet,

the new hospital will offer an array of services to the region.

The HealthPlex will house the Women & Children’s Pavilion, the Heart & Vascular

Institute and the Orthopedic & Spine Center. There will also be a gift shop, cafeteria

and walking trail for our patients and visitors.

HealthPlex Highlights — Excitement is Building!

Construction Timeline

Tree Topping at the HealthPlex hospitalOn May 12, the HealthPlex hospital celebrated the

completion of its highest point with a tree topping

ceremony. A short-needled blue spruce tree was

lifted by crane to the top of the HealthPlex hospital.

The Topping Ceremony is an ancient Scandinavian

custom that honors the 300 craftsmen working on the

148–foot–tall building. The tree has since been taken

down and will be planted on the HealthPlex campus.

Norman Regional executive staff; employees and

volunteers; Flintco Construction employees; donors;

city and state leaders and members of the media

attended the ceremony.

Moore Medical Center joined the Norman Regional Health System family

in 2007, and has since become a key component to our success and a vital

healthcare provider for its community.

The Moore community relies on Moore Medical Center for general medical and surgical needs,

occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, cardiopulmonary services, obstetrical

services, 24-hour emergency services and close-to-home diagnostic imaging. Moore Medical

Center has attracted experts to the area and added 10 new physicians since joining NRHS.

Ryan Gehrig, FACHE, and chief administrative officer at

Moore Medical Center was promoted to vice president

of enterprise systems within the Health System. While

Ryan has assumed additional system responsibilities,

his goal for Moore Medical Center remains the same,

which is to provide the Moore and southwest Oklahoma

City region with the best possible patient care services,

close to home.

Committed to its community, Moore Medical Center

is also finding ways to reach out and give back. During

the city’s annual Bike to Work Day, Moore Medical

Center was a destination point and served up a healthy

breakfast to participants. Moore Medical Center is

involved in community events including the support

of the Moore Chamber of Commerce, American Red

Cross, Moore Public Schools Foundation, and the

new Southmoore High School’s team sports program.

Moore Medical Center sponsored its first free

Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic in November.

Moore Medical Center

The hospital also completed its first beautification project. Volunteers, hospital management and staff planted assorted flowers and spread 320 bags of red mulch to make Moore Medical Center an attractive member of the community.

As Norman Regional Health System continues to grow and

expand, we have remained proactive and ahead of the curve with

the implementation of Project Quest. The goal of this project is

to provide more convenient, quality care to our patients through

upgrading to a system-wide integrated computer network.

This new network, called Meditech, allows hospital physicians and clinical staff

faster, consistent access to patients’ information as it relates to their care. The new

system went live in February of 2008. NRHS implemented Meditech’s full suite

of applications, including all clinical and financial software, scheduling, registration,

laboratory, radiology, and several other applications. NRHS is the only health

system in the nation currently using every application that Meditech offers at this

release level.

Meditech aids clinicians in their day to day operations

by letting them document patient’s care in a centralized

electronic medical record. Physicians and health care

providers have secured access to a patient’s medical history,

test results, vital statistics, medications and allergies.

Project Quest also helped Norman Regional Health System

to go “wireless.” The hospital side of the wireless system is

restricted and private, but patients and visitors are able to

use their wireless devices and computers while on campus.

Complimentary wireless internet is available at the Porter

Avenue Campus, Moore Medical Center, HealthPlex and

the Hospitality House for our overnight guests.

Project Quest

We have excellent physicians,

nurses, pharmacists, therapists

and health care providers in this

institution. Now we’ve added

an electronic record built to our

specifications that match this

degree of excellence.

A new initiative by Norman Regional Health System is streamlining and

improving the way the Health System’s emergency medicine services reach

and treat those in need.

In 2008, the Health System outfitted select EMSStat ambulances and crews with new equipment

and software that makes it easier to respond to calls, input and find patient information, and

reduces radio traffic — all which adds up to improved patient care. This was a very successful

pilot project that is now in the process of being implemented to all 12 of our active EMSStat

vehicles.

EMSStat worked with a local software

developer to create a program that provides

many services to EMSStat crews. The software

links to the city’s dispatch service to provide

a list of all calls, the call’s information, a map

of the exact location of every ambulance and

their status, and the location of a call.

The ambulances have been outfitted with

real-time GPS systems. Each ambulance

also contains a portable laptop that allows

paramedics to remotely access Meditech,

the Health System’s patient information and

records system.

Outfitting Ambulances A New NormanRegional.comNormanRegional.com has a brand new

look and expanded features! Norman

Regional’s Public Relations Department

and Fort Worth–based ad agency Balcom

developed and designed the new

site with our patients, employees and

community in mind. Not only does the

site boast a streamlined, sophisticated

look, it’s also been made easier to

navigate and search.

The designers hoped to connect with the community

by adding several new features. Patient to Patient

allows our guests and visitors to share information,

tips and other details of their experiences with our

Health System. For example, if a patient found our

complimentary valet parking would aid others, they

can post it to the Patient to Patient forum.

The Community Connections section tells the story

of Norman Regional’s outreach efforts. From health

screenings at local elementary schools to our

walking program, visitors to the site can not only

read about these events and programs, but share

their experiences as well through a commenting

feature.

Imagine working 24 hours straight for six years. That’s the amount of work

Norman Regional’s volunteers combined efforts have provided to the

Health System in 2008 alone. Our volunteers spent 56,128 hours last year

delivering flowers, escorting visitors and lending that extra helping hand to

patients, families and visitors. The time our volunteers dedicated saved the

Health System more than $670,000 in one year!

More than 350 adults, teens and college students make up the Norman Regional Hospital

Auxiliary and the Moore Medical Center Auxiliary.

Moore Medical CenterVolunteers at Moore Medical Center gave back to their community

through a variety of projects and causes, in addition to their daily

volunteer activities. They assisted with OBI Blood drives and the Red

Cross drive. The volunteers also gave Christmas baskets to employees

in-need during the holiday season.

Teen HeroesNorman Regional’s Teen Heroes caring service extends beyond hospital

walls. They help out at community events such as the HealthPlex 5K

Run, NRHS Fall Festival and “Butts Out” tobacco-free work day at

Reaves Park. Our Teen Heroes also provide treat bags to Meals on

Wheels clients during the holiday season and raised more than $5,550

for the United Way, American Heart Association and Norman Regional

Health Foundation.

In addition to the 12 departments our Teen Heroes work in, they also

distribute magazines throughout hospital waiting rooms, play bingo with

our patients, and deliver cards to patients.

Auxiliary and Volunteer Services —

Hours

Hospitality House

Norman Regional’s Hospitality House is an eight-room hotel for families to

stay while their loved-ones are being treated in Norman Regional Hospital.

In the last year, the Hospitality House hosted nearly 1,200 guests. Our

Auxiliary also provided 105 nights free to families in financial need through

their Adopt-A-Family services.

GrantsIn addition to giving their time, our volunteers also donate funds to

improve our Health System. Through Auxiliary grants, NRHS was able to

improve our facilities and reach out to our community. Grants worth more

than $42,373 were able to provide a laptop and projector to the Diabetes

Center, two bariatric chairs to the HealthPlex, temporal scanners to all

inpatient units, Wii gaming accessories to our Rehab patients, and much

more!

Two major projects the Auxiliary funded are the implementation of

flat screen televisions and a renovation of Norman Regional Hospital’s

Education Center. With a donation of $89,721 from the Auxiliary the Health

System purchased eleven new flat-screen TVs, hardware and software. The

TVs will serve as communication boards informing employees, visitors and

patients of important Health System events, information and news.

The Auxiliary also paid for a renovation of the Education Center. The

Center was built 14 years ago and needed a few cosmetics updates. More

than $11,000 was approved to purchase fabric and provide the labor to

recover the walls and dividers of the meeting rooms.

Celebrating Service

More than 200 adult volunteers were honored for their 41,946 hours of

service at Norman Regional’s annual awards luncheon. This year’s luncheon

had a 50’s flair!

Community Service and Outreach — “Reaching Out, Giving Back”

Norman Regional is dedicated to reaching out and giving back to the community we

serve. We’re committed to this concept; community outreach is a key component

of our organization’s master plan. We strive to identify health and social needs in

our community. In 2008, Norman Regional provided a total contribution of more

than $2.7 million to the community. Our staff also volunteered their time, serving

more than 496,500 people.

A few of our programs include:

Norman Public School Health Service Program

Norman Public Schools entered into a groundbreaking collaboration with Norman Regional Health

System to financially support the establishment of School Health Services for the district. Previously,

the district only had two school nurses and two part time health assistants to serve 13,720 students.

This program has made it possible for the school district to provide health services at each school site.

Norman Regional and the school district agreed to share the costs of establishing the Health Services

Program, with Norman Regional supplying the majority of the funds for the first year.

Students now have access to five school nurses, five licensed practical nurses and fifteen trained health

assistants. In one year, there were more than 48,500 student visits which ranged from dispensing

medicine to blood sugar checks to first aid. The program’s uniqueness has caught the attention of others

as well, winning several awards including the Barbara Lynch Community Partner Award from Oklahoma

State School Boards Association, the Pinnacle Award from the Association of School Business Officials

and being named Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma’s Champion of Children’s Health.

Drive-Thru Flu Shot ClinicEvery November, Norman Regional Health System and Norman Regional Health

Foundation offers free flu vaccines for community members, 18 years and older.

This unique program provides people a quick and convenient way to get their

annual flu shot. Last year about 1,100 vaccines are administered.

Page 11: NORMAN REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM 2008 Lifesource ......new Southmoore High School’s team sports program. Moore Medical Center sponsored its first free Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic in

Healthy YouthHealthy Youth is a health screening program for regional elementary school children in public

and private schools. In the 2007 — 2008, school year Norman Regional staff and volunteers

screened more than 11,000 children to identify potential health problems.

Fit Families

An extension of Healthy Youth, Fit Families is an award-winning program that teaches families how

to live healthier lives by educating them about proper dietary habits, ideal levels of physical activity,

coping with stress and building self esteem.

Fit Families is based on the concept that involving the entire family creates a supportive environment

and encourages all members of the family to become more active and make positive lifestyle changes.

Children at risk for being overweight or obese are identified through BMI results obtained at the

Healthy Youth screenings. Physicians may also refer families to the program.

Fit Families is so successful it grew to include SNAP

Camp, a summer refresher course for Fit Families

participants. The camp invited 18 children this year to

participate in exercise, do arts and crafts, and learn to

make healthy meals and snacks.

HealthPlex RunMore than 200 runners participated in the second

annual HealthPlex Run. The 5K run and one mile walk

took place in front of the construction site of the new

HealthPlex hospital. Both the female and male winners

set course records!

Healthy CommunityNorman Regional was honored that Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal has

been a dedicated partner with us on improving the health and wellness

of our community. With a busy schedule, Mayor Rosenthal has made

the commitment to meet her citizens and encourage healthy behaviors.

The Walk ‘N Talk with the Mayor series highlights different walking areas

around Norman each month. The walks throughout the series are family-

friendly, free and open to the public.

This unique program is just one of the many implemented by Healthy

Community. Sponsored by Norman Regional Health System, Healthy

Community is a growing team of businesses, individuals, organizations, and

health care professionals working towards creating a healthier Norman

by focusing on four nationally recognized health concerns: hypertension,

obesity/overweight, smoking and lack of physical exercise.

Leadership CommitmentAt Norman Regional our executive staff, directors, managers and supervisors have volunteered

2,149 hours to 77 social and service organizations. They’ve also dedicated 1,568 hours to

community and business organizations and more than 1,130 hours to professional and business

associations. From ringing bells for the Salvation Army to raising money for the March of Dimes

to lending their expertise as a community board member, our management team is dedicated

to giving back to the community that supports them.

Norman Regional Health System believes in continuous innovation of

healthcare that rises above the rest. We are proud to share that we are

Norman Regional Health Foundation “We Enhance Excellent Healthcare”

All of the generous donors to the Foundation’s Highway to Health capital

campaign had the opportunity to attend a traditional “tree-topping”

ceremony on the site of the HealthPlex Hospital, watching as the tree was

lifted to the completed roofline. A few short months later, donors were

back, in hard hats this time, checking on their “investment,” as the new

hospital construction progresses.

Just in time for the new school year’s round

of Healthy Youth screenings — over 13,000

students to be screened in 28 schools in Norman

and surrounding communities — the Foundation,

using some of your generous donations, was able

to provide a larger truck to transport all of the

equipment needed at each site. The truck does

double duty, transporting equipment to Healthy

Community Roadshow events, allowing Norman

Regional to provide blood pressure checks and

other health information to community members

on a regular basis. More than 30,000 people

participated this past year!

Supporting the Foundation’s inaugural gala, you worked with us to provide

seed money for a much needed new emergency modality — a Mobile

Intensive Care Unit, or MICU. This ambulance will accommodate highly

specialized intensive care while in transit by providing more space inside

the unit and more equipment, such as ventilator or neonatal incubator.

This project will continue until, with your help, Norman Regional offers this

unique capability not presently available elsewhere in our state.

Your gifts have accomplished wonderful things for healthcare

in central Oklahoma this past year. These pages cannot contain

stories about all the good that has happened because of your

generosity. Just a few examples stand as testament to the benefit

your donations provide to so many in our health system and in the

communities it serves.

EMSStat, the emergency medical service owned and operated by Norman Regional,

moved Station #3 into brand new quarters south of Highway 9 — made possible

through a generous donation of land from Astellas Pharma Technologies, and carried

out with the help of other Foundation donors.

Funds from the Foundation allowed new specially equipped Cannondale EMS

Response Bicycles to be added to EMSStat’s “vehicle” fleet, so that paramedics can

respond promptly to medical emergencies that happen at

crowded local events, like OU football games and Norman

Day on July 4th.

And, speaking of bicycles, employees and visitors to

Norman Regional have an additional rack on which to park

their bikes, thanks to the request of employee Tim Hare,

a regular bike-to-work guy, and to funds made available

through donations to the Foundation.

Page 16: NORMAN REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM 2008 Lifesource ......new Southmoore High School’s team sports program. Moore Medical Center sponsored its first free Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic in

One of the Foundation’s most popular projects enjoyed another year of success.

The Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic at the HealthPlex allowed 1,100 citizens of Norman

Regional’s service area to be inoculated against the flu, just by driving under the tent

and putting arms out of their car windows. The very efficient Norman Regional staff

delivered all those shots in about two hours! And the compassionate Foundation

volunteers followed up the inoculations with a Tylenol — and a lollipop.

The Foundation multiplied its resources by applying for a grant

from the Federal Emergency Management Administration and using

the funds to purchase over 1,000 smoke detectors for five area

fire departments. The fire departments — Norman, Moore, Noble,

Lexington and Slaughterville — distribute and install the detectors for

people who need them in the respective jurisdictions.

Your gifts to Norman Regional Health Foundation have helped

nineteen deserving students of health care professions with their

training, have supported forty departments in the health system with

requests for items that improve the patient experience in some way,

and are playing a vital role in providing quality health care right here

at home.

After accepting one of the many awards earned by Norman Regional

in the past year, CEO David Whitaker wrote a moving message to the

team that makes NRHS so special.

“Last night I had the privilege of representing the best Health Care

System in Oklahoma at the Modern Healthcare Top 100 Best Places

to Work award ceremony!!,” he reported. “As I sat there waiting for our

name to be called I reflected on the many faces, hands and hearts that

working together make us who we are and change people’s lives — not

just our patients and their families but the care we extend to each

other.”

You — our generous donors — are an integral part of that team. Thank you!

NRH Foundation is fortunate to be served

by an exceptionally able volunteer Board

of Directors.

Our current board includes Chris Graves, Chair,

Susan Gladhill, Chair-elect, Doane Harrison,

Secretary/Treasurer, Jim Wade, Immediate Past

Chair, Scott Bauman, Maureen Bynum, Pam Clinton,

Sherri Durica, Beverly Harkness, James Harp,

Charles Hollingsworth, Judy Jimerson, Dianne

Kittinger, Randy Laffoon, Lori Lindsey, Pat Martin,

Ann Nuttle, Andy Paden, Margaret Pape, Rainey

Powell, Judy Simpkins, Jeff Waltner, Lynn Weber

and Paul Wilson.

The staff of NRH Foundation looks forward to

opportunities to be of service to you. Please call

on us: Marilyn M. Geiger, CPA, Executive Director;

Jeff Alexander, Development Officer; Amber Pape

Cole, Grant writer; and Trish Crow, Foundation

Coordinator.

to provide expert care to our regional community. In 2008, five employees

were chosen from a group of outstanding NRHS employees for their stellar

performance and commitment to quality.

This year’s honorees are:

• Tim Putnam, Help Desk Support, Health Information Technology
