Nordic Lake Occurrene* ,.j
The Nordic Lake occurrence is situated in south central Irwin j Township 13. 5 km northeast of Beardmore and 4 km south of the i Brookbank gold deposit. The property is accessible by travelling Highway 11 to the Windigokan Lake Road and north for 4. 6 km to a point south of Nordic Lake and at the east end of the claim group. ! A flagged bulldozer trail leads approximately l km west to the main . gold occurrence. Under a 1992 Ontario Prospectors Assistant Program
*
(OPAP) grant, property owners Pentti Lassila and Frank Houghton conducted detailed prospecting, mapping, stripping, trenching and sampling along a prominent gold-bearing deformation cone. All activities were centered on a 16-claim unit, TB 1194050.
r
The earliest recorded exploration work in the area, which included stripping and trenching, was done by Nordic Sturgeon Gold Mines, Limited and the Rayner-Tyson Syndicate in 1935 (Laird 1936). In the vicinity of the present day claims Laird (1936) reports that "a prospect pit has been sunk on a band of what appears to be a brecciated cherty iron formation. The band at this point is 5V feet wide and exposed over a length of 60 feet. Both the fragments and matrix are heavily impregnated with very fine pyrite". In 1944 initial work was conducted on the Brookbank gold zone by Noranda Mines Limited 4 km north of the present day property.. In 1984 M. P. Cowan completed a detailed geological mapping and magnetometer survey centered around Nordic Lake andcovering the extreme northeast portion of the claim bl octet1 ires cap Energy Corporation conducted a combined airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and VLF survey over most of the southern half of Irwin Township in 1985 During the 1987 season, joint venture partner, (to Wescap Energy Corporation) Coulson Exploration Inc. completed a geological mapping program over a large 152-claim block known as the south Brookbank jpropertyfr This again covered the southern portion of the township. Extensive stripping and trenching was also initiated during this
runtime, primarily concentrated in the eastern portion of the Nordic ' Lake property (assessment files. Resident Geologist's office. Beardmore-Geraldton District, Thunder Bay). It should be noted that the Nordic Lake occurrence (NLO) was not found during this or any previous period of exploration activity. Considering it* (NLO) proximity to the Brookbank gold zone to the north and the concentrated exploration work conducted throughout Irwin TowbshTp, this would seem to demonstrate that numerous mineralized showings with economic potential are yet to be discovered.
Detailed geological mapping of Irwin Township, as well as adjoining Sandra and Dorothea townships to the west, was completed by W. O. Mackasey of the Ontario Division of Mines in 1967 (Mackasey 1975). The Nordic Lake property lies entirely within mafic me t a volcanic rocks of the west central portion of the main Beardmore-Geraldton belt. More specifically, it is situated just north of the Watson Lake fault primarily within pillowed metavolcanics. A shear horizon or deformation zone ranging from 100 to 150 m wide and striking 255* has been traced for at least 1000 m through the central portion of the property. .Outcrops and stripped bedrock ' windows' of highly sheared pillowed metavolcanics define the zone. The deformation zone is abruptly terminated along the northern contact, where large, l to 1. 5 m, well-formed south facing pillows were observed. The southern contact is less well defined due to limited bedrock exposure. Within and along the strike of the deformation zone, areas of prominent chlorite- ! sericite-carbonate alteration associated with quartz-filled tension fractures were noted. Some areas host stretched and deformedpillows exhibiting highly altered sericitlzed-silicified centres/ " ~T which form .knots roughly 10 cm in diameter. Crosscutting mafic and ' feldspar dikes, in addition to marker beds ctf cherty fine-banded ' metasediments up to .5 m wide, were observed at several locations along the deformation zone.
Most of this year* s field work was concentrated at the western end of the deformation zone in an area known as the Glade Trench, which hosts the main Nordic Lake occurrence. The original showing was up to 1. 5 m wide by 7. 5 m long and has since been stripped for an additional 150 m to the west. This area is characterized by a j * quartz vein and stringer system hosted in sheared chlorite-sericite !, i rich mafic metavolcanics which contain from 2 to 5% very fine j j disseminated pyrite. It is from this altered pyritic wall rock j j where the highest gold assay values have been obtained. Further i j stripping at a point 200 m east along strike of the Glade Trench ' ; uncovered a second gold bearing zone (named the Road Vein) of similar size and character. Some ankerite, trace galena and minor purple coloured fluorite were noted in outcrop at both occurrences.
Grab samples of altered pyritic mafic ne t a volcanic host'-rock l collected by the property owners and the authors from both the Glade Trench and Road' Vein assayed consistently up to O. 25 ounce Au per ton (the highest being . 267 ounce Au per ton). Samples collected from the quartz vein and stringer horizons assayed up to . 08 ounce Au per ton (Resident Geologist's files, Beardmore-Geraldton District, Thunder Bay).
POND SHEAR ZONE f NORDIC LAKE OCCURRENCE)
Work during the 1993 field season was conducted over what is known as the "Pond Shear" located approximately 400 m west of the Glade Trench. The Pond Shear lies along the western extension of the main deformation zone on the Nordic Lake property.
An intensely sheared, highly altered, rusty carbonate-rich zone has been exposed on the southern edge of a small beaver pond. The zone strikes 60* AZ and varies from 18 m wide at the pond to 10 m wide at the west end of the exposure. Shearing is well exposed along 80 m of strike length at this point. Stripped outcrop sections at the western end preserve the original pillowed nature of the mafic metavolcanics outside the shearing influence.
The Pond Shear zone is characterized by areas of narrow discontinuous parallel boudined vuggy quartz veins and veinlets throughout. Very fine disseminated pyrite averaging l to 2% was noted associated with the highly altered rusty portions of the shear horizon. At the east end and within the zone adjacent to the pond, a series of undeformed 2 to 15 cm wide dark grey green porphyry dikes were also noted. All contain l * pervasive very fine pyrite. Also observed at the extreme western end of the stripped area within the less deformed pillowed met a volcanic*, were up to l m wide light green felsic dikes. Rusty pyritic rich areas were noted within these dikes. In addition to the overall intense shearing, certain areas within the Pond Shear zone exhibit a high degree of folding.
Gold assay results for a suite of nine channel and chip samples from the Pond Shear zone taken during a field visit (October 1993) ranged from ^.01 oz/ton to O. 02 oz/ton and as high as O. 51 oz/ton Au.

INTRODUCTION
The exploration program described in this report was
conducted between June and November 1993 by P. Lassila and F.
Houghton, co-owners of the Nordic Lake Property, claim TB 1194050
[16 units]. In consideration of good results, five additional
claims [8 units] were staked in 1993 at the west and southwest
end of claim 1194050.
The 1993 program consisted of detailed prospecting,
handstripping, sampling, diamond saw cut channel sampling,
bulldoser stipping and power washing. Thirty six samples were
collected for assay returning results up to 0.49 oz\t gold t
Sampling by Gerry White, M.N.R. geologist, returned 0.51 oz\t
gold from the Pond Zone (a new 1993 discovery).

TOPOGRAPHY AND OUTCROP EXPOSURE
Topographic relief reaches about 50 feet (15 m) along east-
vest trending rocky ridges that form hill and gully terrain north-
south across the geological structure. Much of the area is rock
and swamp with some parts covered by poplar-timbered shallow sand-
clay overburden. The whole area was timber cut some thirty years
ago and is now covered by remanents of overmature timber and thick
scrubby overgrowth. Old brush covered timber roads provide
reasonably good access for heavy equipment movement at some
locations.
WORK PROGRAM
The main 1993 effort was directed at extending westward the
1992 gold discoveries as well as providing additional detail in
areas of the 1992 work. Concentrated detailed prospecting was
carried out over virtually all of the western half of claim TB
1194053. During this prospecting a total of 36 assay samples were
collected and a total of 38 locations were bulldozer stripped.
PROPERTY GEOLOGY
The property is underlain by a 2 km thick section of westerly
trending mafic flows and pillow lavas, minor dacitlc flows and
locally narrow (up to 5 m) dacitlc to cherty commonly pyritic dikes
or interflows. Centrally, along the property, a 100 m vide
deformation system containing veil foliated to schistose,
chloritic, sericitic, carbonatized mafic pillov lavas, trends vest
southvest for at least 3 km. Associated vith this deformation
system are numerous subparallel feldspar porphyry dikes, locally
quartz veins (some vith gold enrichment) and pyritization.
Significant (over 0.20 oz/ton) gold values have nov been
discovered in pyritic silicification at three locations: the Road
Zone, the Glade Zone, and the Pond Zone. This indicates that gold
enrichment has occurred at several locations over a distance of
least 900 metres.
The deformation system exhibits considerable variation along
strike. Pinch and svell and echelon shear systems are clearly
evident. A svarm of feldspar porphyry dikes follovs along or is
close to the main shear system.
Alteration products associated vith the deformation include
moderate to intense chloritization, carbonitization, minor (locally*
substantial) sericitization, introduction of calcite and quartz
flooding and, locally, pyrite enrichment. Best gold values have
been obtained from locations containing both quartz flooding and
pyritization.
Just north of the Glade shoving and Pond shoving a 30 m thick
massive carbonatized mafic volcanic unit flanks the north side of
the shear system.
Within the deformation system the mafic to intermediate
pillows exhibit varying degrees of flattening from ratios of 3 to l
to linear schistose streaks in the most intensely sheared
locations. The known gold-bearing quartz veined zones all occur at
locations of intense shearing.
The total strike length of the deformation system has now been
defined for at least 3 km and it appears to continue veil beyond
that distance.
SIGNIFICANT MTMRRXr.T7.ATTQN DISCOVERED
During the 1992 - 1993 prospecting, significant gold-bearing
mineralization was discovered at three locations on the property
within the Nordic Lake Deformation System:
1) Glade Zone, discovered in 1992, best assay 0.238 oz/t gold,
grab sample;
2) Road Zone, discovered in 1992, best assay 0.494 oz/t gold,
diamond saw cut channel sample, 23 cm;
3) Pond Zone, discovered in 1993, best assay 0.51 oz/t gold, grab
sample (Jerry White, M.H.R);
In each case the gold is associated with pyrite and quartz
flooding in sheared altered volcanics, over a distance of some
900 m from the Pond Zone to the Road Zone, along the deformation
system.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The major surface exploration problem here Is overburden
cover. The showings are located In shallow overburden areas that
have considerable overburden cover on strike. Therefore drilling
will be required to test for values at depth as a veil as along
strike of the gold-bearing showings. This would require a program
beyond the funding available through OPAP Grants.
However, the 1993 staked 8 unit area on strike vest of claim
1194050 has not been explored. This area should also be prospected
in detail, followed by bulldozer stripping in the same fashion as a
has been completed on claim 1194050. A budget of $10 000 should be
sufficient to cover costs of this prospecting - bulldozer stripping
program.
