Delwood Hall RenovationsSpecial General Meeting September 19

We are having a Special General Meeting on September 19, 2014 at 7:00pm coffee and donuts will be served.

We are asking all Delwood Community Members over 18 years of age to attend. Memberships will be available to purchase at the meeting.

The Special General Meeting is to discuss our options for the hall renovations on a design and then to make a decision by majority vote.

If you would like to view the designs before the meeting, we have them on the Delwood website or you can see them in the hall foyer at the Fall Festival (September 13, 2014).

As with all General Meetings we require Quorum to hold a vote. This is a big decision that will affect the Community for years to come. This decision must be made by the General Membership of Delwood and not the Executive Board. So please come to the Special General Meeting Friday, September 19, 2014.

August 2014

U12 Girls: Coach – Kris Bernstrom, Ass’t Coaches – Brianna Clark, Joe Caputo and Jon Phair, Manager – Chantal Chinni• The U12 girls team this year had a majority of first-year players for their

age group. They finished 4th over all in their tier and also competed in the summer sizzler. Good job girls.

U14 Girls: Coach – Chris Spielmann, Ass’t Coach – Tom Banks, Manager – Valeska Spielmann• After an outstanding indoor season, the U14 girls continued to excel during

this outdoor season. They played in the top tier all season finishing in 2nd place to advance to the city championships.

• City championships were held here in Edmonton. The girls began the tournament winning their first 3 games which earned them a spot in the gold medal game. The gold medal game ended in a tie, which meant doing penalty kicks to determine a winner. The girls were victorious – coming home with gold and earning them a spot in the Provincial Championships. Awesome job!

• Provincial Championships – The weather did not cooperate for the start of provincials. The first 2 games were cancelled due to rain and a shoot out was done to determine the winners. After the shoot outs, all 3 teams in the group were tied. This meant yet another shootout to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the group. The girls came out on top winning the final shootout earning them a birth in the gold medal game (to be played on Sunday). The competition in Sundays game was tough and despite their best effort, the girls came home with a very respectable Silver medal. Congatulations girls.

U16 Boys: Coach – Willie Chung, Ass’t Coaches – Bob Lemmen, Curtis Gribble and Pasquale Laporta, Manager – Katrina Huhtala• The U16 boys entered the Summer Sizzler Tournament. They posted a 2-1-0

record finishing in 2nd place – earning a Silver Medal. Way to go boys!• The boys finished in 2nd place overall for the season in the top tier which

qualified them to advance to the City Championships. • City Championships – the boys played extremely well at cities and won silver

after posting a 2-1-0 record. The 2nd place finish qualified them to go to the Provincial Championships held in Calgary.

• Provincials – The boys began the tournament with a nail biting back and forth game where they prevailed with a last minute game-winning goal. The celebration was short lived however as they lost the next 2 games finishing in 4th place overall. Congratulations on an exciting season.

50th Anniversary

SAVE THE DATE! June 19 & 20, 2015

As a newly married couple with plans for having a family, Ed and Victoria Gartner chose to purchase their first home in the up and coming neighbourhood of Delwood. It was 1964, and the developers had plotted land for two school grounds and plenty of park space – a great place for a young family to thrive.

The Gartner’s home just south of Delwood Park was soon very busy with three children: Claudette, Christie and Gary. The family developed close ties with their neighbours; Ed served as Treasurer of Delwood Community League; and the kids were encouraged to take part in local events and activities. In fact, Claudette and Christie each represented the community as Miss Delwood, featuring baton twirling as their talent.

When Christie married Dan Mattiussi in 1988, they knew they wanted to live in Delwood. They purchased a home just down the alley from the Gartners so that the Mattiussi girls, Lindsay, Danica and Kaylie, could be close to their grandparents. The girls were very active in sports, such as fastball, and grew up feeling like they knew everyone in the neighbourhood and often lent a hand to others.

Lindsay married Matt Abrahart in 2004, right about the time her grandparent’s next door neighbour was ready to sell. Buying the house was an obvious choice for the young couple: the adjoining yards meant the families would be close by to help each other when needed, and the Abrahart children would grow up in a familiar community. “Delwood is so good for families,” says Lindsay. “The schools and playgrounds are great, and because Matt and I are very involved in coaching soccer, our kids know a lot of people and that helps us all feel safe and comfortable.”

Delwood 50th:The GartnersDelwood is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a community in 2015! Every newsletter until the end of 2015 will feature a couple, family or individuals who have chosen Delwood as their home.

The Mattiussis recently purchased the home next door to the Gartners and Abraharts, and plan on keeping itin the family.

Back to school safety

Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students about some basic road safety tips, as streets become more congested, with the return of the school year. Pedestrians and motorists both have an important role to play – road safety is a shared responsibility.

Around school buses • Flashing amber lights mean a bus is

slowing down to stop. Motorists should do likewise.

• No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP, when approaching a school bus with activated flashing red lights – unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway from you.

• Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.

Motorists • Avoid talking on cell phones, texting,

or any other behavior that diverts your attention away from driving.

• Give right of way to pedestrians who have activated overhead crossing lights, or who are waiting to cross from a street corner.

• Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles - other than those that are parked - in school zones or playground zones, during posted hours.

Pedestrians • Cross only at marked crosswalks, or

street corners that have clear visibility from all directions.

• Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the street.

• When activating overhead crossing lights, pause before stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions have come to a complete stop.

• Stay within the crosswalk lines until fully clear of the roadway.

• Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop.

• If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing.

• Remember: children learn by observing. By demonstrating safe crossing habits, you can reduce the chances of your child being involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.

Home Security PartnershipWe have a new pilot project here at Delwood with the purpose of protecting our homes and property from crime. One of our residents brought forward this proposal to the Executive Board after a lot of legwork

on his part.

Delwood Residents, with a current Community Membership, will be able to purchase a cellular camera (Game Camera) from Wholesale Sports at a reduced price. This mounted camera can be used on your

property for home surveillance. The pictures will then be sent to your cell phone or email in “real time”.

It’s important to note that these cameras are only to be used on your property and only to view your property.

“Due to privacy legislation which govern the City, you are NOT authorized to place any surveillance cameras in locations which would film public space.” This is a direct quote from the Law Branch of the City of Edmonton.

To take advantage of this project, you will need to contact the Delwood President, Greg Sorenson at [email protected] or call (780) 472-7864.
