The Invitation

I texted all of the guests that I invited in a group chat and gave a list of what they could bring.

Invited (bolded went to the party): Kellyn, Sarah, Emmanne, Abby, Selina, Lydia

Food list: Chips, salsa, Kashi, ginnybakes, Boom Chicka Pow, Skinnypop, Clifbars, Honest Tea, water, granola, and anything else that you can find in the organic section of the store!

The Documentary

We watched The Seeds of Death: Unveiling the Lies of GMO’S at the study party. This documentary goes into detail of the corrupt Monsanto business and the role it is playing in the destruction of the environment and local farmers. It is about an hour and a half long and is a very thought-provoking documentary.

What each person brought

Apple chips and banana chips from Fresh Market because she “likes chips”. She would buy the banana chips again but not the apples ones.

Blue corn tortilla chips from the organic section of Harvest Market because she knew that I was bringing chips and salsa and wanted chips she’s like. She said she would definitely buy them again because they tasted exactly the same.

Kashi cookies, green tea, and puffed apple cinnamon corn from Fresh Market because she likes tea, cookies, and thought that the puffs looked “super yummy”. She wants to buy the puffs again.

What each person brought (continued)

Sarah brought Snackimals and a couple Honest Teas from her local grocery store Nature’s Green Grocer. She chose to bring these items because the Snackimals were similar to animal crackers, which she has a lot, and she always drinks Honest Tea at school. She says that she will definitely eat the Snackimals and continue drinking the Honest Tea.

I decided to bring chips and salsa from Vista because they are always a classic party dish and I thought it would be interesting to see how easy it is to find an easy but delicious snack. I am definitely going to eat these again because, not only are they healthier, but the chips and salsa were super good.

All the snacks and the group

The ResponsesLydia: as the daughter of a local farmer, Lydia knew a lot of the information regarding small businesses and the small farmers, saying that she was annoyed how they could “silence the local farmers” and “control what was being planted.

Sarah: she was pretty horrified by the corrupted studies done on GMOs by Monsanto and was confused about how the corporations were able to get by with clearly flawed research. “I was really surprised by how they controlled the studies to make it seem like they were good. When really they weren’t”

Abby: she is very close to Lydia, so she was also pretty angry by how Monsanto treated the small time farmers. She was also annoyed by the control they hold over seed sales, pesticide, and the effect that both of these aspects have on the environment. “They’re hurting the farmers and the environment” even going on to say that “it sucks”.

Selina: she was especially freaked out by how much the food is changed when they genetically modified it. She was also surprised during the shopping by how hard it was to find a product that didn’t have GMOs. “I didn’t realize how many GMOs there were… I want to know what is in my food.”

Plans to raise awareness

When asked about how to raise awareness, Sarah’s immediate response was: “Let’s just make a bunch of posters!” And, building on that, we decided that we will make posters and then, during the weekly assembly, give a quick speech about GMO’s and their effect on the environment and community.
