Fellow Nomads,

I would like to once again thank you all for the honour bestowed upon me to represent Eastern Cape Nomads as your Captain and I look forward to the year ahead with enthusiasm. Ian has handed the club over in a great state and I sincerely hope to live up to the high standards of those that have gone before. The club is sound and I'd like to keep it on an even keel, focusing on improving communication channels and upholding the traditions that have made Eastern Cape successful.

I'd also like to welcome and thank all this year committee members for volunteering their services in the running of your club. We take leave of Marcelle Roux as PRO and our Treasurer, Alan Young, whose financial astuteness has kept us solidly afloat. We recognise the stalwarts that continue to keep the ship on course and we welcome the new members that will help guide the Eastern Cape into the future.

The first game of my Captain's year – Humewood, The Links; what a challenge!! You just know that the gentle morning breeze is going to pump and that every resolution made about rising to the challenge just vanishes in the wind. I usually wind up leaving the up-wind holes to the big hitters and concentrating what little talent is left on scoring on the down-wind ones! Then again, there's no one else to blame in setting up this year's fixture list which, by the way, is a task more difficult than it sounds given all the National, International, SAGA, EPGU, league and club fixtures that you have to skirt around. Somewhere I remember a little birdie saying “don't pick the easy courses at the beginning of the year; get in some prep for Nationals”.

My partner for the day was Ryle Lourentz, Golf Administrator at Humewood, represented Humewood on the day and, as my partner, helped to stem the flow of funds to that formidable pairing of Neil Webster and Steve Pritchard. In the end we wound up making a small contribution to their winnings on the day and I'm thankful that Ryle was in great form otherwise we could have lost a lot more.

Ken’s Korner - January 2013

Congratulations on a job well done to Stuart and Nick on their first prize-giving, to Martin for so aptly filling the cameraman role on the day and to our magnificent ladies who manage to keep us all on track despite our willingness to do otherwise. Welcome also to our newest Nomad, Stuart Reid; I hope that your association with Nomads will be long and fruitful one.

Our next monthly game is on the 17th February and I look forward to seeing you all at Port Elizabeth Golf Club. This game will also be our OMIPSA golf day, so make certain that you've got a partner and bring your a game to “The Hill”. Until then,

Yours in golf

Fellow Nomads

This is my first newsletter as your incoming Vice Captain. I

would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the

honour bestowed on me to represent the Eastern Cape

Nomads in this capacity. I pledge my full attention to the year ahead and

hope to fulfil the trust placed in me. I will always be available to all nomads

for any advice, complaints or even just to listen to someone who needs an

attentive ear. I will do everything in my power to ensure that the Nomads

ethics continue the way that they should and I encourage you all to support

our cause wherever you can.

Our first Monthly Game for 2013 was held on Sunday, 13 January (lucky for

some) at Humewood Golf Club in blustery conditions. The golf course was in

great condition as usual and we were well looked after once again by our

hosts. Well done to the winners, nice to see that the pressures of Vice

Captaincy did not affect my game too much which allowed me to pip Stuart

McLeod into top spot in the A division. I had the pleasure of hosting

prospective Nomad, Graeme de Wit, who will hopefully shortly be seen at all

our monthly games in his Nomads gear. We were joined by two true

gentlemen of the game, 80 year old Bill Anderson and his junior, John

Phillips. We had a wonderful day out on the course, despite the conditions

becoming rather tricky into the south-easter. Our game was touch and go

and ended up with us making a small donation to our opponents whilst

enjoying a cold Castle Lite after the game. Thanks gentlemen for a great

afternoon.

Well done Ken on your first prize-giving, also to Nick behind the scenes

assisting with the prizes. Congratulations and welcome to Stuart Reid who

was inducted by Ken and proposer, Stuart McLeod. It really did appear to

be the “Stuart” sideshow on Sunday, with that McLeod guy making an

absolute pig of himself with the prizes and draws. As I said earlier in this

note, the thirteenth was lucky for some!

We look forward to seeing you all at Port Elizabeth Golf Club on 17

February which is also our OMIPSA golf day, so grab a partner and give it

your best shot, it is well worth it if you manage to qualify for the next

round in this wonderful competition.

“Tales” from Long Faced JVC

Firstly, I would like to thank you all for the honour of allowing me to become the Eastern Cape JVC. It is a privilege and I will do my best to uphold the Nomadic traditions of the past.

Secondly, thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support for the first game of the year, I think it went reasonably smoothly.

Thirdly, thanks to our Humewood hosts. The course was great, and everything was set up and ready for us to go.

Now for the Tale…

Baptism of fire!!! I arrived at the gusty Humewood golf course at 10h00 and hastily put the milk out. You may have noticed there was some low fat milk, which appears was finished. If you could let me know if you would like me to continue to bring a little low fat milk, that would be great. I managed to get the Altar up with help from 'A' division winner Stuart McIver, but I ended up sweating like a race horse that had just finished the Grand National. I met my golfing partner in the bar, George Saffy, who immediately told me to tuck my shirt in !!! I knew I wouldn't be walking as he had his Silver “Classic cars” playboy golf cart, fully stocked with ale. You beaut George. As I teed off, Howard Lipman gave me trouble as I hadn't shaved and he said that the management must shave. I told him I hadn't seen that in the book. The enemy for the day was the talented Benji “Ah so” Zhang and new boy on the block Dave Koen with his bright shiny golfing attire. Benji paid graciously. Thank you. During the game I wondered if Georges “Yamaka” golf cap might blow away, but it didn't. Afterwards, it was again all hands on deck. The cards for the last 4 ball came in at 17h10, and Orion's 4 ball decided to leave the nearest the pin markers out there to try and delay the proceedings. Anyway, I called a 17h45 start for prize giving, and I hope that was appreciated. I aim to get prize giving under way as quickly as possible each month. Also, I will not be getting the tees and pins set up any differently than the normal club set up (no playing off the back). Just a heads up, Nationals is in March and then shortly afterwards on the 7th of April we have the Frontier Trophy with our Neighbours Border at the Royal Port Alfred. Please mark this in your calendars and I will be in touch soon to see who wants to come and join the party. Finally, from
