At the end of 2012, D. Eric Bookhardt of Gambit Weekly remarked, “If surging attendance, strong finances and high visibility are any gauge, NOMA may have entered a golden age.” The tremendous efforts in 2013 by NOMA’s dedicated board of trustees and passionate staff perpetuated that image with a busy year full of impactful exhibitions and memorable milestones. In 2013, the museum completed significant renovations that unveiled beautiful hardwood floors, just in time for visitors in town for Super Bowl XLVII. A redesigned pond and the installation of a major new Lichtenstein acquisition highlighted the striking facade of the museum and attracted new audiences to NOMA. The board also began the strategic plan process in 2013, laying the groundwork for its successful implementation in 2014. By focusing on a long-term strategy, proper stewardship of the infrastructure, and NOMA’s opportunities for lifelong engagement, we identified key steps to ensure the longevity and success of the institution. 2013 was also marked by several new hires that have already made great strides in their departments. Two new curators and three additions to the development team have strengthened the museum’s efforts. Speaking for the board, it has been a great pleasure to work with these professionals. NOMA broke attendance records in 2013, no doubt due to a full, provocative exhibition schedule and programs that welcome every member of the family. The creation of the Business and Director’s Councils has engaged community leaders with the museum, bringing fresh perspectives on museum priorities. Let us build on our past successes to continue to support this remarkable institution.

For the New Orleans Museum of Art, 2013 was a year of growth on many levels. Our educational, exhibition, and programming outreach all saw robust transformation, and illustrated New Orleans’ role as a source of inspiration for not only artists, but also all of us working in the arts. The first and second pilot years of Mini Masters, an innovative program developed by the museum along with several community partners, made its mark in 2013. Today, in 2014, the program continues to demonstrate sustainable outcomes; a testament to the inspired work carried out in its beginning stages. Early in 2013, NOMA expanded its partnerships with NOMA➔CAC, a curatorial collaboration between two of the city’s finest cultural institutions, NOMA and the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans. This partnership added two outstanding exhibitions to our 2013 season: Brilliant Disguise: Masks and Other Transformations and Edward Burtynsky: Water, which gained national attention in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, and was named one of the “25 Art Shows that Will Rock the World” by The Huffington Post. These exhibitions also introduced NOMA’s audiences to contemporary art in a new setting. In addition to these shows, NOMA hosted Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs, 1951-1939, a landmark exhibition that showcased some of the most beautiful, innovative decorative arts featured in the world’s fairs. As the only host city to have also hosted a world’s fair, New Orleans held a distinctive role in the exhibition’s national tour. Later in the fall, NOMA opened a provocative exhibition of works by photographer Gordon Parks. Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument, a complex assessment of Parks’ contributions to photojournalism, has toured to multiple venues around the country, and was also featured by the Google Cultural Institute. Finally, we closed the year with Photography at NOMA, a monumental exhibition of NOMA’s expansive photography collection that has been amassed since the 1970s. More than an exhibition, this presentation was a celebration of the foresight of Director Emeritus John Bullard as well as previous photography curators. NOMA’s collection of 10,000 photographs spans the history of the medium, and often points to New Orleans as a point of departure or inspiration for artists working across generations. NOMA strengthened its partnerships with foundations and our donors to make major acquisitions possible. A happy coincidence—Robert Rauschenberg’s family roots in Louisiana—was the impetus for NOMA and the Rauschenberg and Helis Foundations to work together to bring the artist’s Melic Meeting (Spread) to the museum. Other significant acquisitions of works by artist Will Ryman and photographer Debbie Fleming Caffery are the result of strong donor relationships, an essential foundation to ensure museum growth. 2013 was also a year of milestones, as NOMA celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. A lush oasis of live oaks and other flora, the garden has grown to become more than the magnificent outdoor gallery space it is—it has also proven to be a stage for dramatic performances, an outdoor movie theater, a center for wellness and a setting for festivals. A true treasure of art, the garden has also become home to over sixty sculptures by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and that number continues to grow. Thank you for your support in 2013.

4 Annual Report 2013
The ambitious, wide-ranging exhibitions and programs presented during 2013 showcased the talents and scholarship of our curators, the ambitions of our institution, and NOMA’s ties to the national and regional museum community. The staff itself increased through the appointment of two curators: Mel Buchanan as the RosaMary curator of decorative arts, and Lucia Abramovich as the curatorial fellow for Spanish Colonial art. The decorative arts, one of the most significant aspects of the permanent collection, will be re-installed in newly configured galleries over the course of the next few years. NOMA’s collection of Spanish Colonial art has not had a systematic examination for decades, and will now be the focus of curatorial activity, in
of scholars and visitors to the masterworks in the collection, this exhibition underscored the importance of New Orleans’ role in the history of photography. The city, its artists and history served as the touch-point for many of the exhibitions throughout the year, notably Portrait of Faith: John Paul II in Life and Art; Rashaad Newsome: King of Arms; Camille Henrot: Cities of Ys; Woven Histories: Houma Basketry; and Lin Emery: In Motion. The reinstallation of our permanent collection galleries resulted in a new area being designated for the display of photographs. Through the generosity of Joshua Mann Pailet, an endowment for photography exhibitions and programs has been established and the gallery named: the
anticipation of a 2016 reinstallation. During the calendar year fifteen exhibitions were presented at NOMA and five outside the museum’s walls, including two at the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans: Brilliant Disguise: Masks and Other Transformations and Edward Burtynsky: Water. Our major spring exhibition, Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs, served as the catalyst for three related exhibitions of objects—historic and modern—that were featured at these international expositions. The year closed with Photography at NOMA, the first comprehensive display of works from NOMA’s nationally significant collection of photographs since the 1970s. Introducing a new generation
A. Charlotte Mann and Joshua Mann Pailet Gallery. Extraordinary works of art were brought into the collection in 2013. Melic Meeting by Robert Rauschenberg, Five Brushstrokes by Roy Lichtenstein, America by Will Ryman, and 181 photographs by Debbie Fleming Caffery are among the nearly 300 works accessioned. Additionally, the significant collection of gallerist Arthur Roger became a promised gift in 2013, with the entire collection expected to be gifted by 2018. The activities of the curatorial department expanded the museum’s reach and created new opportunities for local and regional engagement with the visual arts.

6 Annual Report 2013
In 2013, NOMA built on programming strengths in early childhood education, literary connections, and the performing arts.
Early ChildhoodMini Masters, which debuted in the 2012-2013 school year, provides pre-K students with high quality, developmentally appropriate visual art experiences, in the classroom and at the museum. The number of students in the program nearly doubled from the 2012-2013 school to the 2013-2014 school year. NOMA fosters connections between the visual and literary arts through the Language & Arts School Partnership, underwritten by the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation. Programs like StoryQuest and Poets for Art are designed to inspire a love of art, while increasing academic skills in communication, language arts, and critical thinking. StoryQuest, designed for families with children ages 2 – 8, sparks imagination and a love of reading, along with a sense of adventure and discovery. In 2013,
regularly collaborate on productions, and in 2013, the group performed the Shakespearean classic Much Ado About Nothing. NOMA was also presented with the Business Recognition Award at the 2013 Big Easy Theater Awards, an honor given for the museum’s theater partnership and its contribution to the local theater community. A highlight of the 2013 Friday Nights at NOMA programming included the Donna Perret Rosen Lecture, which featured artist Frank Stella, who discussed his decades-long career as an abstract painter. Other notable speakers that year include Linda Yablonsky, art critic and journalist for Artforum and The New York Times, among others; Lisa Dennison, Chairman of Sotheby’s North and South America; and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, the Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A partnership with the Historic New Orleans
professional authors, actors and artists from The NOLA Project, Cripple Creek Theatre Company, The New Movement, and others brought the world of children’s literature to NOMA, as they read aloud a selection of books that highlight a unique theme. The Poets for Art program provides high school poetry students with a master class by the Louisiana Poet Laureate. Students select works of art from NOMA’s permanent collection, write an original poem inspired by the piece, and recite their poem at the museum. In 2013, students worked with Louisiana State Poet Laureate Julie Kane.
Community PerspectivesNOMA is one of only a handful of art museums expanding the scope of public programming to include the performing arts. NOMA is an ideal setting for dramatic performances, and has established a successful partnership with local theater company The NOLA Project. NOMA and The NOLA Project
Collection resulted in a dynamic selection of programs in conjunction with the exhibition Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs, 1851-1939. Judith H. Bonner, Senior Curator at the HNOC, along with John H. Lawrence, director of HNOC programs both gave informative lectures on subjects such as “The 1984 World’s Fair, William Woodward, and Women’s Education” and “A Moment in Time: The Creole Exhibit of the 1884 World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition.” Youth & FamilyNOMA offers a wide variety of opportunities for families and children to enjoy the museum. In celebration of Inventing the Modern World, NOMA held “Meet Me at the Fair” Family Day, which included kid-friendly activities such as musical performances, art activities, tours of the exhibition, StoryQuest, and demonstrations by the Holy Cross Robotics Club, Bike Easy, and jewelry artist Vitrice McMurry. NOMA’s festivals celebrate distinct cultures in New Orleans. On May 11, NOMA presented its first annual India Fest in partnership with the Indian Arts Circle of New Orleans. Traditional art and music of India were spotlighted in this colorful cultural celebration. Activities included a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, wedding procession, dance
