Questions? Visit www.pesihealthcare.com/faqs, or call 800-844-8260AWHONN Perinatal Nursing Fourth EditionBy Kathleen R. Simpson, RNC, PHD, FAAN & Pat A. Creehan, MSN, RNC, RNAn official publication of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), Perinatal Nursing, Fourth Edition presents up-to-date information based on the most rigorous evidence and offers suggestions for best practices. This new edition of the authoritative, comprehensive text used by perinatal nurses worldwide features a wealth of new content to keep practice current.

High Risk Pregnancy & Delivery, 5th EditionBy Elizabeth Stepp GilbertTopics include assessment of fetal well-being, pregnancy loss and perinatal grief, ethical decision making, legal issues and risk management, sexually transmitted infections, substance abuse, health disorders complicating pregnancy and complications in pregnancy. New features include patient safety and risk management strategies, a chapter on Venous Thromboembolic Disease and standardized terminology and definitions.

Neonatal Pocket Guide for NICU NursesBy Pamela Ann Harris-Haman, BSN, CRNP, NNP-BC, RNC-NICA collection of quick point-of-care reference materials. Topics include: prenatal factors, cultural indicators, resuscitation methods, endotracheal tubes, thermoregulation, respiratory medications, cardiology, fluids, electrolytes & nutrition, infectious disease, pharmacology, bilirubin/neonatal lab values.

The high risk labor patient can and will arrive at any hospital at any time without regard for the level of perinatal

care offered. The registered nurse from labor and delivery has different resources available depending on her work setting to help her care for the complicated pregnancy. Once the patient needs are identified in any setting, readiness to manage these patients in a predictable way can make all the difference in the outcome, including:

• developing on-the-spot assessment skills to identify the complicated patient.

• Current protocols at your fingertips to guide your care.

• Practicing with your team to ensure effective communication principles, environmental readiness and on hand supplies.

developing the skills and critical thinking to identify and manage a high risk patient begins with a firm knowledge base of pregnancy and childbirth. diabetic ketoacidosis management, best practices for accreta, emergency steps in amniotic fluid embolism or septic shock are rare occurrences where checklists can help ensure up to date care. more familiar problems such as preeclampsia, VTe and hemorrhage may already have safety bundles developed with protocols and equipment ready for an emergent need.

Predetermined protocols are published and available but need to be adapted to your setting and your resources. Collaboration between disciplines is necessary to incorporate protocols and practice through simulation scenarios in your setting to ensure readiness for different complications. Peggy will highlight the importance of preparation through a variety of high risk patient cases based on evidence based protocols. You definitely do NOT want to be lacking in preparation when the next high risk ob case comes through the door. Allow Peggy to share her respected insights throughout this day of learning that is sure to offer some improvements to your own practice.

Peggy Cowling, APN, CNS, RN, is an Advanced Practice Nurse/Clinical Nurse Specialist with experience in labor and delivery, mother baby and neonatal intensive care for over 30 years. Peggy graduated from loyola University in Chicago with her mSN in maternal Child Nursing. She is certified by the National Certification Corporation in electronic Fetal monitoring, Inpatient Obstetrics, and Childbirth education and remains an active member of AWHONN, AORN, and ANA.

Peggy has a clinical nursing background in tertiary and community settings and although resources at times are different, high risk patients are a regular event in both settings. Communication skills, nursing readiness and predetermined protocols for the high risk patient are essential tools to ensure optimal outcomes for both baby and mom. Peggy has accumulated a wealth of knowledge throughout her career, including such responsibilities as: serving as an ed nurse to triage patients when outpatients exceed deliveries, lactation services, teaching baby care to families, and the very unfortunate times when special support is required for families following perinatal loss.

As a respected and requested presenter, she has organized training events for a large hospital system, co-hosted a national conference on mother-baby nursing, and has spoken at national conferences on support and care of the mother undergoing critical care.

Responsible for competency of staff for many years, Peggy provides staff with tools to apply the knowledge taught in this course, including competency records to track learning and follow up experiences.

Speaker disclosure:Financial: Peggy Cowling has an employment relationship with Advocate South Suburban Hospital. She receives a speaking honorarium from PeSI, Inc.Nonfinancial: Peggy Cowling has no relevant nonfinancial relationship to disclose.
