But let us not forget that it was an unsafe world when Jesus was born in Bethlehem as well. “A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.” You know the story about the slaughter of the innocents (Matt. 2:13-23). There are two different responses to a world that is unsafe. One is to try to escape, to hide, to enter into seclusion. In a way, Joseph does this with some success. Joseph takes Mary and Jesus by night and heads to Egypt. Thirty years later, however, Jesus finds himself right back in the middle of an unsafe world. He hangs on a cross just outside of Jerusalem. Even Jesus cannot escape the unsafe world. The other strategy is more difficult, but it is one worth considering. Maybe, just maybe, this will be the way our neighborhoods, communities, and world can be safe. The prophet Isaiah had a vision of a world in which “waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert,” and where there is no threat of violence: “No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it” (Is. 35:6, 9). No Lion Shall Be There

A gunman, Man Haron Monis, held a number of people captive recently in a Sydney, Australia, café. The 16-hour hostage standoff ended with the death of the hostage-taker and with several other innocent people who just happened to be at the Lindt Chocolat Café. Shortly after this event occurred, a Taliban-led attack on a Pakistan military-run school left at least 141 people dead, mostly children and teenagers. We live in a world that many deem unsafe. It is a troubled world, so foreign to the world which many of us knew in years past. Bad things do happen. Thirty years later, however, Jesus finds himself

right back in the middle of an unsafe world. He hangs on a cross just outside of Jerusalem. Even Jesus cannot escape the unsafe world. The other strategy is more difficult, but it is one worth considering. Maybe what we should do is to live each day and incarnate in our lives the love and grace of the One who came to save the world from darkness. 35:6, 9). Hold on, my friends! God’s Kingdom is not yet, but it is unfolding right before our very eyes. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with each one of us. Bible Studies and LOGOS in the New Year

Malachi – A Love that Never Lets Go - This study by Lisa Harper will be our new women’s study starting Tuesday, January 13, at 9:30 AM in the small dining room of the Family Life Center. God won’t walk away even on our worst day; God won’t leave us. No matter how often we mess up, God loves his broken people. Please contact Jane Sparks, 843.357.5185 or [email protected] to register. Jane Bowers will be facilitating this study.

Rediscovering Our Spiritual Gifts - Bill Wening will be returning this winter to lead the study entitled “Rediscovering Our Spiritual Gifts.” This 5-week study will begin on Thursday, February 5, at 6 PM in the library of the Family Life Center. This study is a practical look at how the gifts of the Holy Spirit can renew the lives of individuals and revitalize the church’s ministry. Please contact Jane Sparks, 843.357.5185 or [email protected] to register.

Winter Session of LOGOS - Attention, all 1st through 12th graders . . . our winter session of LOGOS will begin on Tuesday, January 13, and will continue through March 10. We will continue to meet from 4:30 PM to 7 PM each week. Parents, be sure to enroll online or complete the LOGOS enrollment form found in the lobby of the Family Life Center. Tell your friends and neighbors - all are welcome to attend!

Reverend James L. Belin Birthday Celebration

You are invited to join us for a very special occasion, the 227th birth date of our benefactor, the Reverend James Lynch Belin, as well as the 90th anniversary of the founding of this church.

Reverend Belin was a man of great vision, who in 1824 owned 150 acres of land and chose the very place where we now worship (then known as Cedar Hill), to build the Waccamaw Neck Mission House to minister to the entire community. As a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church, he assigned 2-½ acres to the South Carolina Methodist Conference to forever be used to further the mission of the church.

Ninety years ago, in 1925, the church building of Oatland Plantation was moved to Murrells Inlet and became Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. Our current sanctuary was constructed in 1992, and the previous building was moved and became Joseph B. Bethea UMC.

On January 11, we celebrate these two important events, honoring the birth and vision of this man as well as the founding of our church. At 12:30 PM a lunch, prepared by some of the finest cooks in the Inlet, will be served in the Family Life Center. A dramatization, "Imagine . . . He Is Not Gone!" portraying some of the individuals who would have been residents of the Murrells Inlet community during the early 1800s will be performed. We will have a good old-fashioned "Gospel Sing" and the opportunity to share some memories.

The cost is $10 per person. Reservations and advance payment may be made through the church office, 843.651.5099, or payments may be made online (click HERE). Childcare will be available.

Please mark your calendar and plan to be with us. For further information or if you would like to help, please contact Henrietta Huff, Centennial Committee Chair: 843.357.3187.
