One of the key elements som etimes present in UFO rases are physical traces l e f t by the
object. This ca n take many forms, such as soil changes, indentations, or e f f e c t s on vegetation. In
th e famous 1993 Australian case involving Kelly Cahill and other witnesses, traces included
magnetic e f f e c t s which corresponded to the reported shape of the object, as illustrated in the above
printout (copyright Phenomena Research Australia). Ted Phillips, the top trace researcher in
th e world, has compiled more than 3,000 trace cases from 91 countries which involve th e obser-
vation of a UFO or other anom alous phenom enon. His interim report begins on page 3 .

W e are very pleasedto announce thatDr. Edgar Mitchell will be a featured
speaker on Saturday night, July 23,2005,at the MUFON International U F OSympos ium a tthe MarriottTech CenterHotel in Den-ver, CO.
On Feb. 5,1971, Dr.
M i t c h e l l b e -came the sixthman to walk onth e Moon. lamp e r s o n a l l yproud of Dr . John SchuesslerMi t c h e l l ' s ac -complishments, an d pleased that he willshare some of his experiences with ou rsymposium audience. I considerhim afriend and one of our real space heroes.
Some interesting facts about D r.Mitchell include the following:
W hen he earnedhi s Doctorate fromMIT, his thesis described a mission toMars. Soul Travel Magazine quotes himas saying,"It is time to release the con-
straints on UFOs an d extraterrestrial
information that has been avoided orhidden by most nations, and/or inagreement with Extraterrestrials them-
selves."He has never had first-hand experi-
ences with ETs or the U FO phenom-ena. Rather,he relies on the testimonyof trustedold timers and more moderng o v e r n m e n t and mili tary personnelwhose official duties an d need to know
placed them in position to have suchexperiences.
This is your opportunityto meet andhear one of the few people who have
actually walked on another body in space-our Moon.

Physical traces associated
with unidentified flying objects

Introduction^ • jhis report presents a statisti-
I cal analysis of data presented-JL in 3,130 reports involving ob-
s e r v a t i o n s ofa n o m a l o u s p h e -nomena or objectson or n e a r theground resulting inp h y s i c a l e f f e c t sgenera ted by theobserved phenom-e n a or o b j e c t s .These observationstook place in 91
countries between1490 and 2004.
There are hundreds of additionalpossible trace sites which do not involvethe observation of a U FO . All but themost significant of these events havebeen removed from this rep ort; they arelocated in ano ther catalog.
T he data in this report are based onevents available in February, 2005.
T he analysis perm its certain regu lari-ties of these phenom ena to be broughtout, as the data indicates there is a cer-tain type of phenomenon which showsstable statistical properties.
This research began in 1968, and af-ter 36 years it is yet premature to con-
- sider th e nature of these phenomena onthe basis of the data presented to date.
The development of methods of ob-taining more reliable data, an d expan-
sion of the initial information, wiU re-sult in a database of wha t I considerth e most important piece of the UFOpuzzle—physical evidence.. .
General characteristics
This report is not based on lights inthe night sky or objects seen at greatdistance, but on unusual objects on orquite near th e ground.
Many of these events involve mul-tiple witnesses, observing ob jects undergood viewing conditions, at close range,

details visible for extended periods oft ime, and/or objec t res t ing on theground with known reference points be-hind an d around them.
Small humanoids and resulting foot-prints have been reported in a substan-tial num ber of cases.
In t e rms of size, reports indicatesmall objects ranging from less than onemeter to 3 meters in diameter, and anintermediate group of objects from 4mto 10m are often observed. Large ob -jects over 1 Om in diameter are seen at areduced percentage of the total.
There are many instances of animaland human effects, some quite severe, ranging from "sunburn" effects to seri-ous heat exposure.
Animals, especially dogs, h ave a vio-lent reaction not only to the observedobject bu t also to the resulting groundeffects left behind .
Most landing events involve obser-vations with th e unaided eye, tew withan y optical aids, and very few photo-graphs of landed or nearly landed ob-jects have been presented.
Circumstances of observationT he majority of cases involve wit-
nesses going about their daily business, often a farmer, alerted by his dogs or byelectromagnetic effects. In the highstrangeness events, on e finds the wit-nesses were skeptics prior to their ob -servation.
. These witnesses usually wan t no pub-licity, and the investigator spends a greatdeal of time just locating them. Whenthe witnesses are located, they will giveup the information, bu t usu ally only on
th e conditions that their names and thelocation will not be revealed.
Farmers an d ranchers represent th emajority of witnesses, as the observedobjects seem to prefer isolated locations.
This report will provide statistics re-lating to distribu tion of events by year, month, time, object an d site details, an dother relevant characteristics.

About the author
Ted Phillips isconsidered the topresearcher in the world on UFOtraces/effects. He worked closelywith Dr. J. Allen Hynek for a num-ber of years, and it was Dr. Hynekwho suggested to Phillips that hespecialize in landing traces.
Ted has personally investigatedmore than 500reports, an d has com-piled a research file of more than3,000 such cases.
He is the found er and director ofthe Physical T race Research Project,a former staff member of Skylook(forerunner of the M U F O N U F O
Journal), has presented seven papersat MUFON symposiums', and hasworked closely with APR Q, NICAP,
andCUFOS.His recent work includes a spe-

acquired. These events must be weldocumented, and the resulting effectsampled fo r lab orato ry analysis.
There needs to be a central repository for physical evidence cases. Currently, the data is scattered amon g manyinvestigators an d groups in many countries.
A central repository should produceinterim reports available to the genera
public and serious researchers. This wilproduce new data and a much morcomplete database.
Classification: types of objectsT he data indicates five major type
of UFOswhich land, or nearly land, andgenerate physical effects on their immediate surroundings.
TYPE ONESmall objects, less than one meter in
diameter. These represent 28% of thecases which include object dimensions

CASE EXAMPLE
Missouri, 1978-isolated farm in SWMO ; six adult witnesses observed a one-meter object resting on the ground from0700 to 0900.
Sunrise was at 0720, scattered thinclouds at 10,000 ft , light winds from thesouth. The field was illuminated by fullsu n from 0720 through 0900.
Until 0850 the witnesses periodicallyobserved the elliptical white object fromth e front window an d front porch ofthe house, thinking it was a piece of
metal that had blown into the field over-night. There was no apparent move-ment, an d cattle stood in the area lessthan 10 0 feet from the object.
At 0850 th e farm owner and his sonwalked to a large barn located 10 0 feetfrom the house to get a tractor to pullth e "metal" from the field. With fourmembers of the family watching from
th e front porch, the two men started th etractor. As they did so, those on the porch
began yelling as the small object startedto ascend. At that point the men at the
barn couldn't see the object, which w as12 0 feet from the opposite side of thestructure.
The object ascended slowly towardthe north on a rather lo w angle trajec-tory, and the two men at_the barn ranbeyond the building and watched theascent from the east side of its flight
path.As all six watched, they could see thatit w as rotating, showing a dark sectionat about two-second intervals. As the
object silendy increased its rate of climbit made a turn to the right, followed bya sharp turn to the left, flying across th ewind.
There were no visible wings or en-gines, and no sound w as heard as itpassed within 16 5 feet of the witnesseson the porch: As they watched it climb, they noticed a much larger cylindrical
object higher in the sky. T he smallerobject finally joined with the cylinder, which moved rapidly north.
Where the object rested in the fieldthey found a 1.5m slighdy oval areawhich was dehydrated. The grass was
crushed and discolored, and inside thatarea were tw o small circular craters.
Dust had been blowh from these cra-ters onto large-leafed plants, which werewilted, trapping th e dust in the foldedplants.
Delphos, KS, circular trace.
TYPE TWO
Objects with an estimated diameterof 2m to 4m, these objects rarely makeground contact, generally hovering oneto five feet above ground level. These
objects make up 26% of the cases withestimated object dimensions.
CASE EXAMPLE
Canada, 1974—farmer of high cred-ibility swathing his rape seed crop at
1000, weather was overcast, low cloudceiling with light showers.
As he approached a slough whichw ascovered with high, thick grass he notedwhat looked like a metal duck blind inthe high grass. He stopped his swather
some 50 feet from th e slough andwalked to the edge to investigate.
As he stepped up to the edge of thegrass he saw a metal domed objectwhich was spinning at a high rate of
speed. He could see dark "grooves" onthe surface and a wide "belt" aroundthe lower section.
T he object was five feet thick an deleven feet wide at the belt.At this pointhe became frightened an d backed awayfrom th e spinning object.
When he reached the swather heclimbed up on to the seat, and from this

higher angle he could now see four moreobjects of the same size an d shape, al lspinning, and he noted thegrass beneaththe five objects was moving violendy. The five objects were arranged in a
semi-circle around the slough. The second object from him had two
rod-like "probes" which extended fromthe base of the object into the grass. These rods were rotating and swirlingthe grass around them. He would laterfind two long disturbed areas extendingfrom ring two.
. As he watched, the five objects sud-denly ascended in a set formation yerti-'cally.
There was no sound, andunderneatheach of the five he could see two pipe-
like extensions from which a burst of"exhaust" was seen. The wind fromthese blew off his cap.
When they reached the cloud basethey stopped, formed a perfect line, an dwent into the .clouds.
At the site he found five rings, eachswirled in a clockwise pattern with the
central areas undisturbed. The ringsmeasured 3.3, 3.1, 2.4, 3.0, 3.24m indiameter.
He was so frightened he decided not

to t e l l anyone about the
event. His mother, seeing hew as disturbed about some-thing, finally pushed him intotelling his story.
He then took his father to
see the rings. His wife toldhe r sister, sh e told he r hus -band, he told his brother, and
the brother called the RCMP.There was a detailed inves-tigation by the RCMP, and thelead investigator, ConstableR on Morier, told me: "Yes, Ibelieve that he saw some-thing, and I don't see why hewould exaggera te what hesaw. There is no way this is ahoax."
He adds, "It was in, the
slough grounds, the grass wasgreen an d long, and it w as un-d i s t u r b e d e x c e p t f o r t h ecircles-and whatever was inthere, it came out of the air .and departed the same way."
One of the most signifi-cant UFO events, Delphos,KS, involved an object verys i m i l a r to the C a n a d i a nUFOs. It too was domed atthe top and flat at the bot-tom.
It was six feet thick, andeight to ten feet in diameterwith a belt or lip at the base.
The circular trace measured2.4m in diameter with thecentral area undisturbed.
TYPE THREE
19% of the cases in whichestimated dimensions weregiven are in this group. These
* s objects were estimated to be'• 3m to 6m in length, g enerally
- described as oval or egg-shaped w ith landing legs vis-ible.
T he objects often involved
smal l humanoids , and leftbehind burnt or dehydratedtraces and four imprints fromthe landing legs.
CASE EXAMPLEN ew Mexico , 1964—the
well known Socorro event inwhich police officer Zamorawitnessed the descent of abright f lame below a shinyobject.
He arrived at the site to see
MAY 2005
an oval object on four legs.He observed two small hu-manoids about 450 feet awayin daylight.
T he ob je c t qu ick ly a s -cended with a roar and
f lames, became silent, andflew away on a horizontal tra-j ec to ry . At the s i t e were
burned bushes an d four im -prints.Less than tw o days later an
identical object w as observedat close range at La Madera,NM. I t left behind a scorchedsite and four imprints w hichw e r e a l m o s t i d e n t i c a l to
Socorro.See also Valensole, France.TYPE FOUR
16% of the reports de-scribe a typical flying saucer, estimated diameter of 7m to10m. Usua l ly descr ibed ashaving a metallic su rface, sur-face deta i ls , and exte rna llights.
Landing legs are seen, us u-ally numbering three. Theseobjects make ground contact,an d humanoids ar e often re -ported.
CASE EXAMPLEAus t ra l i a , 1966-a well-
known case w i th w i tnessGeorge Pedley observing an
object at close range at 0900 .He saw a light gray non-re-flecting dull o bjec t, estimatedto be 25 feet long and 8 feetthick, rising vertically frommarshland.
It then climbed at a 45-degree angle from a height of
about 30 feet above the sur-face. T he obj ect ascended ata point 75 feet from the wit-ness.
He could hear a hissing
sound as the object climbed. He described it as two sau-cers, edge to edge.
A near circular depressionremained in the sw amp grass,th e area measuring 32 feetlong and 25 feet wide. Thegrass was flatte ned clockwiseto the surface of the water, and reeds had been u prootedfrom the mud below.
TYPE FIVE
O b j e c t s desc r ibed a slarger than 10m in diameterrepresent the smallest per-centage at 11%.
Again, these objects aredescribed as classic saucersor as cylinder or cigar shape d.They are the largest objectsobserved generating traces.
CASE EXAMPLEUzbekistan, 1984—techni-
cian Shamil Yu aihmetov andfour other workers saw a ci-gar-shaped object at 2345slowly descending at a 45-degree angle.
They estimated the lengthto be more than 80 metersand the diameter at 25 to 30meters. The object flew overthe men and descended be-hind a hill.
It emitted a slight hissingsound and appeared to bemetallic. The next day an areawas found in a vineyard withthree rounded imprin ts or
holes about 0.5m deep. They w ere in an equilateral
triangle pattern, their shapeindicating globe-like landingpads. An area of the vineyard30m x 80m was destroyed.
T he event was investigatedby S.P. Kuzionov, PhD, amember of the Geographical
Society from Leningrad. Theevent was quite close to theKatta-Kurgan tac t ica l n u -clear missile base. The mili-tary paid su bstantial attentionto the incident.

Brazil ha s experienced ma ny types of UFO sightings and encounters, including debr
reportedly dropped from a UF O. This photo shows w h a t observers described as a "sauc
nest" over a small pond in Gnarat ingueta, Sao Paulo, in December, 1996. UFOs ha
been reported hovering over th e area tiro days before th e "nest" was discovered. Th e Bra^i
ian Air Force reportedly videotaped th e area fo r eight days.
Brazilian doctor says she was
told to cover up UFO injuriesBy Carlos Mendes
Translated by Paulo Santos,
Brazilian UFO M agazine www.ufo.com.br
"I've been compelled by the Brazil-ian Air Force to convince the locals thatthe lights attacking them were ma ss hal-lucinations, an d that what they saw hasnever happened."
This is the statement by Dr. W ellaideCecim Carvalhothe, M.D. in publ ichealth and psych iatry, in discussing herrole in the so-called "suck-suck" phe-nomenon, a weird episode that terrifiedmany communities at Colares, Vigia,Santo Antonio do Taua, Mosqueiro e
Baia do Sol, Brazil, at the end of 1977and beginning of 1978.
The victims called the encounters"suck-suck" bec ause the lights seemedto suck blood f rom their bodies.
Dr. Wellaide w as responsible for ahealth care unit at Colares at that time, and treated abou t 80 victims of the mys-terious lights.
"I was the first one to make contactwith the victims of the suck-su ck phe-nomena," she says. "In spite of being

22 years old at that time and being completely skeptical , I started to notic
changes the medicine failed to explainSh e notes, "The burns on the victim
skin w ere almost always on the neck anthe breast, with two small and paralleholes, as if it was a little bite, but wasn't."
Dr. W ellaide Cecim says that after 6days of daily records covering more tha120 cases, she started to report thescases to her superiors. But she wasnprepared fo r their reaction: She was fobidden to admit something strange w ahappening.
"But, being faithful to what I see, noto what I hear, I kept on speaking," shexplains. "Even under th e risk of beinfired." seethe phenomena, but even seeing they
wouldn't believe...
Wellaide—They didn't even pay me
a visit. I had to discover that the vic-
tims lost erythrocytes all by myself. I've
always tried to do my best in my job. I
noticed because of the research I made
to find out why these people had giddi-
ness, sluggishness, could hardly walk,
and had lost blood. I sent several re-ports to the health secretary.
Question — And who was the
health secretary?
Wellaide — Dr. Manoel Ayres. My
immediate superior was Dr. Luiz Flavio
Figueiredo. He forbade me to talk, make
suggestions, or even agree with the lo-
cals. But you don't need medical knowl-
edge to know. Necrosis occurs only 96
hours after a burn. The victims' burns
had necrosis immediately, j u s t five min-
utes af ter the attack.
Question — What's the explanation
fo r this?
Wellaide — That's when it all be-
gins: they (the f lying objects pilots)
couldn't be Russians because it doesn't
match their technology at that time, and
nobody could make burns in that way.
Question — As a psychiatrist, do
you believe these people could be vic-
tims of a mass hysteria?
Wellaide — This is what the Air
Force always askedme to say. Therewas
not any kind of mass hysteria or visual
hallucinations. The psychiatry proves it
didn't happen. It may happen whenpeople commit mass suicide. But no-
body can have the same delirium, the
same visual, sonic, and synesthetic hal-
lucination at the same time and in dif-
ferent places.
Question — Who asked the Air
Force to investigate the case?
Wellaide — Once nobody helped,
much the opposite, and they told me to
shut up; the Colares mayor at that time,
Mr. Alfredo Ribeiro Bastos, called the
Brazilian Air Force. And from Parana
came the president of the ufology soci-ety of that state, the philosopher,
ufologist, and biomedical Daniel
Rebisso Giese.
We wrote the first book on this sub-
ject: Vampires a n d extraterrestrials in
Amazonia. The priest of C9lares and
also a doctor, Alfredo de la 6, now de-
ceased, also called for help.
Question — What hurt you most?
Wellaide — It was the fac t that, 22
years old and responsible for a health
care unit, I had a lot of people needing
research to find out why they were im-
mobilized. Why they couldn't walk ortalk. And when I looked at the hemo-
gram to compare the last records, I've
learned theyhad very low ratesof eryth-
rocytes and hemoglobin.
The fac t is, no object can bring out
skin necrosis after a burn so fast. A third
factor is the alopecia, the fall of hairfrom the skin, in a way it will never grow
again. The victims have never had hair
on the burned skin again.
Question — And when did the Air
Force appear?
Wellaide — 90 days af ter our re-
quests. When Colares was empty and
scared, they came. Because of the dic-
tatorship we were under, they used to
call me every day to ask me to speak to
the people, to try to convince them they
were having mass hallucination, but I
always refused.Question — Under all this pressure
from the military, what did you do?
Wellaide — I always told them I
wouldn't obey. I disagreed with them
when they said I was afraid of being
considered a fool. I really don't mind. I
gave interviews to several TVs from
Brazil, EUA, and Europe, even under
the risk of being fired. Besides being a
skeptic, I'm totally sure of what I saw.I
don't know what it is, but I know it's
real.
Question — Did you, as did the cap-
tain Uyrange Hollanda, the investigationcommander, see beings from space?
Wellaide — Yes I did. It was 5 PM
in the afternoon at Colares. There was
a ship at 50 meters of altitude, above
the city's main street. Inside of this ship
there was a being, 1.20 or 1.30 meter
high.
This happened when I was drivingto help a child with a broken clavicle. I
wasgoing to immobilize her. They were
flying so low that I was completely un-
able to react. I could see the UFO's
bright metal, and it wasn't a dish-likeobject, but much more like a cone or a
cylinder. Its course was elliptical.
At 5 o'clock in the afternoon your
eyes can't play tricks on you. You may
havevisions, hallucinate, but besidesme,
many others would have to.
Question — Did someone die afterbeing sucked by the lights?
Wellaide — Two persons I took to
the hospital in the capital, Belem, died.
I took them in my car. And when they

gave me the death certificate, I could
read "unknown reason." The victims
had the burns, the tiny holes, die ex-
amination. I mean, it's very easy to hide
things in this country.

Operation Saucer collected reportsfrom the people who saw the lights.
Fishermen, rural workers, simple and
ordinary people hit by the lights were
interviewed by the Brazilian Air Force's
personnel between November of 1977
and the beginning of 1978.What they told is written in a report
called Operation Saucer. The Air Force's
document was signed by Capt. Uyrange

Also a numb feeling started to risethrough her body, coming from the feet,an d a strong heat appeared, spreadingfrom the right shoulder to the head. She
thinks she had been hit on the right sideof the body by a beam of reddish light.
Case 3 — Maria Francisca Fu rtado,30 years old, prim ary school educationonly. She told what happened in thenight of Oct. 18,1977, about 21:30.Shelives close to a village called Vila Novado Ubintuba.
As the attacks were becoming morecommon, she and her husband used tocome every night to Mr. M ig u e lArcangelo Scares' house in order tosleep together with several families. On

It was about 1.5 meters and moved.at very lo w altitude, about five or tenmeters over the ground. T he object w asemitting a light beam, as a flash lamp, very strong an d bluish colored, towardshim.
Very scared, Raimundo gathered his
strength and ran to his friend's house, crying for help . Looking back, hewatched the object rise in the sky, be-tween the trees, leaving bright an d mu l-ticolored sparks behind.
He complained of shivering, head-ache, and numb ness in the region of thebody hit by the light beam. He did notreport s y m p t o m s of b u r n i n g . Heshowed what the object looked like bydrawing on the ground.
He represented the bright sparks us-ing three vertical lines with ab out 20 de-

Case 6 — Five men told themilitarythey could see two beings inside the ship.An enc ounter o f the first kind with fivemen of Colares and a ship with extra-ter res t r ia l beings inside would havetaken place on Oct. 12 , 1977, at 23:30.
In the report th e farmer, ManoelEspirito Santo, 20 years old, primaryschool education, told the military that
he was in front of his house with hisfriends, Julio, Paulo, Deca, and Carlito,w hen he noticed a yellow light movingin the sun set direction.
It slowed down, almost stopping bythem, about 20 meters away. Manoelsaid he could see the light had two "pi-lots." They seemed to be human. The"man" was at the left side, and the"woman" at the right side.
Both were wearing something simi-lar to glasses on their eyes, and had com-munication equipment. The man on theleft raised his "glasses," as if staring atthe witnesses, and at this ve ry mom entthe other pilot, using a lateral pipe, senta red light beam to-them.
The mom ent he w as hit by the l ight,Manoel felt a strong shock, as if it wasan electric shock. The sensation startedon the feet and rose to his head. Thenhe got his legs and arm s paralyzed andalmost lost consciousness.
The ship went away slowly, thenspeeded up. Manoel could move again, but felt numbness fo r several minutes.

From far away, the ship looked likered and yellow-colored star.
It changed its color from bright ylow to red and, when it was closer, could see a bluish light on the fronupper part.
It was cylinder-shaped, like a barrand had a frontal smaller pipe, reddicolored, and a thinner one on its sid

ELEVEN: The contactees
While some U FO researchers wouldprefer to forget this strange chapter ofU FO history, there is no denying its pro-found influence on the U FO movement.
T he contactee movement began insouthern California in the early 1950s
w h e n a m a t e u r a s t r o n o m e r GeorgeAdamski claimed to have seen, photo-graphed, an d been taken onboard a f ly-ing saucer piloted by friendly human-looking extraterrestrials.
H is story touch ed a nerve, and elec-trified the public. Adam ski became aninstan t celeb rity, w riting books , givinglectures, and attracting w ide audiences.
Before long, many other contacteesconverged on so uthern California, allwith similar claims. California becamethe place to be if you were interested inU FO s. Daniel Fry, Orpheo Angelucci,George Van Tassel, Frank Stranges, andothers al l claimed to have made contactwith ETs.
They also all wrote books and lec-tured widely. Each of the stories ha dthe same theme—warnings from the ex-traterrestrials that humans are too war-like, that nuclear weapons are danger-ous, that w e m us t no t pol lute.our envi-ronment, an d other philosophical m es-sages—all of which today remains aprominent theme in modern abductionaccounts.
The ETs were usually described ashuman-looking, attractive, an d originat-ing from various planets in our solarsystem. Of ten th e stories seemed tocontain information that is believed bymainstream science to be false (for ex -ample: life existing on the moon an dother planets in our solar system.)
And yet, the cases also have consid-erable corroborating evidence, includ-ing photos or mu ltiple eyew itness testi-monies.

O ne e x a m p l e is the case of SidPadrick of Watsonville, who reportedlyexperienced a contact with friendly hu -man-like ETs on Jan. 30,1965. Padricksaid he was taken inside a craft an d toldthat the ETs had a U topian-like societywith no illness or crime.
While Padrick's claims were incred-ible, he was well known in his com mu -nity. Also, at the time of his experiencethe m a y o r of Mo n t e r e y , George
Clemens, and num erous park rangers inthe area rep orted UFOs.
Padrick was eventually contacted bythe Air Force, w ho interviewed him andreportedly asked him to not talk pub-licly about his encounter. Says Padrick,"There w ere certain details they askedme not to talk abou t publicly, but I think
MUFON UFO Journa l
in telling it tha t everything shoul d be dis-closed."
While the contactee enigma is con-troversial a nd has divided inv estigators, the movement was extremely popularand is responsible for introducing count-less people to the subject of U F O s .
T he annual Giant Rock conferenceheld annually throughou t the 1950s and1960s in the southern California desertstill holds the record for the largest gath-ering of UFO enthusiasts, attracting atone point more than 5,000 people.
Whi le many people consider thecontactee movem ent to be a product of,/the 1950s, it continues today. A good'example is Los Angeles reporter PhilipKrap f , who has writ ten tw o recentbooks about his own experiences with
friendly ETs.
TEN: The Topanga Canyon waveOn J un e 14,1992, the small commu -
nity of Topanga Canyon experienced anenormous wave of UFO activity involv-in g h u n d r e d s o f objec t s . O n t h a tevening, at least 17 independent adultwitnesses reported incredible encoun-ters throughout the canyon.
Ten witnesses in five different ve-hicles driving along th e boulevard that

evening were all"buzzed" or "tail-gated
from above" by large glowing objects. One driver pulled over and observed
dozens of objects coming out of a larger
mother ship. Another one of the ve-
hicles w as picked up inside a beam oflight, causing a period of missing time.
The witnesses called the police andreported their encounters. As the driver
said, "I'm telling you, I've never beenmore frightened in my life."
Other witnesses were inside their
homes where they observed bright
beams of light coming from above, or
oval-shaped glowing objects darting
back and forth across the sky.
One couple was awakened from a
sound sleep when an object hovered low
over their home and lit up the entire
interior. Another couple living high in
the canyon observed more than 200
objects over a period of three hours.
This particular wave was one of thestrongest to ever hit California, and itremained strong for at least two more
years, producing more than 50 addi-
tional reports of all kinds, including
sightings, landings, UFO-car chases,UFO-helicopter chases, face-to-face
encounters, missing time abductions,
onboard experiences, possible animal
mutilations, cryptozoological creatures,
and more. •
While the main wave was from 1992-
1994, the area has a long history of en-
counters, starting in 1942. From that
point, the cases increased quickly, withtwo casesin the 1950s, two in the 1960s,
15 in the 1970s, 14 in the 1980s, and at
least 47 in the 1990s. A June 14, 1992,
encounter waslisted in Timothy Good'sbook Alien Update as one of the best
reports for the year.
Today the area continues to be one
\ of California's few m a j o r UFO"hotspots, with sightings as recent as
2004.
NINE: California airships
In late 1896, northern California ex-perienced its first recorded UFO wave.In fact, as researcher Richard Dolanwrites, it "represented the first UFO
wave—though it would be 55 years be-fore anyone used the term."
From October to December, 1896,
thousands of residents of the cities ofSan Francisco, Sacramento, Stockton,
and Oakland observed one or more
zeppelin-like objects that glided at lowelevations over the city, sending down

powerfu l beams of lights. Several of
the witnesses reported seeing human-
looking figures on board. Others heard
distinct voices.
As one witness, Charles Ellis, said,
"It hovered effortlessly and looked like
a strange bird with four rotor wings, traveling about 20 miles an hour...I
didn't want to believe it .was an airship.
I had always regarded such reports as a
joke. But now I have no choice but tobelieve them."
The airship mystery is important be-
cause people had never been confronted
with the idea of extraterrestrials. As
Dolan writes, "The idea of spaceships
from another world wasn't popularly
considered, and would not be until the
late 1940s...Most thought they were
merely seeing a man-made object."While the sightings originated in Cali-
fornia, they soon spread across the
United States. The strange objects be-
came front-page news and caused a
media sensation. Interestingly, zeppe-lins were invented only a few years later.
These initial reports, however, remaina mystery. While they have many simi-
larities to modern reports, many inves-
tigators are baffled by the dirigible-like
appearance of the objects.
Some researchers (ie: Jacques Vallee,
Jerome Clark) have pointed to the air-ship wave as evidence that UFOs"track" cultures, and have an explana-
tion other than extraterrestrial. What-
ever the case, the sightings marked thebeginning of California's involvement
with the UFO phenomenon.

most famous and best-verified UFOphotographs were taken by Los Ange-

SEVEN: UFO destroys missileOn Sept. 15, 1964, a crew of 12
military personnel at Vandenburg AF
prepared for the launch of an Adas missile. The launch took place as sche
uled, but at about 60 miles of altitud
the missile mysteriously malfunctioneand plunged into the Pacific Ocean.
Dr. Robert Jacobs (then a lieutenan
was in charge of filming the missi
launch with a telescopic camera hooke

The next day, his superiors called

Jacobs to view the film. To his shock,he observed "a round object" hoveringnext to the missile. Says Jacobs, "I t flewright up to our missile an d emitted avivid flash of light.
'Then it altered course an d hoveredbriefly over our missile.. .and then therecame a second vivid flash of light. Thenthe UFO f lew around th e missile twice
and set off two more vivid flashes fromdifferent angles, and then it vanished.A few seconds later, our missile w asmalfunctioning an d tumbling out ofcontrol."
Jacobs was ordered to remain silentabout what he saw. He dutifully keptsilent for 17 years before he finally wentpublic with his story. Despite his ster-ling reputation, he was immediately at-tacked by arch skeptics/debunkers PhilKlass and James Oberg.
He also received numerous death
threats, lost his employment, and hismailbox w as destroyed with skyrocketsfollowing another threat. Investigators, however, located Jacobs' superior, Ma-jor Mansmann, who, on multiple occa-sions, confirmed the details of Jacobsaccount.
This account is one of several inwhich UFOs have shown their capabil-ity to affect even our most advancedtechnology. It also shows evidence ofthe UFO cover-up.
SIX: Cororiado mass encounter
This case w as originally uncoveredan d inves'tigated by UFO researcherYv onne Smith. In mid-March, 1994, theTRIAD UFO conference was held inCoronado, featuring several leaders inUFO research.
A fe w hundred people were in atten-dance. Seven of the attendees w ere stay-
N
ing at the nearby Village Inn in threeadjacent rooms.
As UFO researchers know, it is veryunusual to uncover an abduction caseinvolving more than one or two people.
However, in the middle of the night ofMarch 15, these seven witnesses simul-taneously experienced a visitation byseveral gray-type ETs who came intotheir hotel room and abducted at leasttwo of the witnesses.
What makes this case unique is notonly the large number of independentw itnesses (all of w hom have providedextensive interviews), but the medicalevidence.
All of the witnesses have a lifelong
12
history of UFO encounters, and eachof them has experienced a wide varietyof physical symptoms, including p unc-ture wounds, cuts, bruises, scratches,flu-like symptoms, high-blood p ressureattacks, multiple infections, scoop-likescars, and more.
One of the witnesses ha s undergonean operation by Dr. Roger Leir, DPM,
to have an apparent implant removed.T he im plant was placed in her leg du r-ing the ir Coronado encounter . Ananalysis of the object has shown it tocontain m any unu sual properties.
Two of the other witnesses, LaurieAngelone an d Mike Evans, have gonepublic with their experiences. Evans hasundergone extensive medical examina-tions, including X-rays and MRIs, whichshow evidence of several foreign bod-ies in his head and legs.
Says Evans, "I have one [foreign
body] around my left ear. One aroundthe pituitary, sitting on top of the lim-bic system. And the other one is in theoccipital.. .I've ha d doctors an d radiolo-gists tell me that they don't know wha tit is.. .1 have things in my head— thingswhich nobody seems to be able to
explain.. .which I can't get rid of with-ou t major brain surgery. Where doesthat leave me?"
Dr. Leir has examined Evans andverified hi s post-abduction symptoms.Says Leir, "I have known Mike for manyyears now and can personally attest to
the physical finding.s such as bruises andscratches on his skin."
W hile this case has not yet been pu b-lished, it has accumu lated an impressiveamount of evidence. Says Dr Leir, "Thenumber of mass abductions are sparsein the literature, and this case will beranked high on the scale of importance."
T he case is also the subject of a full-length book by Mike Evans and me,soon to be released by Galde Press.FIVE: Tujunga Canyon abductions

be professionally researched and writ-ten about are the 1953 Tujunga Can-yon contacts.
T he case involved tw o southern Cali-fornia ladies, Sara Shaw and Jan Whit-ley, w ho experienced a missing timeepisode while staying in their remotecabin in Tu junga Canyon.
They later located sou thern Califor-nia investigator Ann Druffel , who, alongwith D. Scott Rogo, Dr Bill McCall, andothers, conducted an extensive investi-
MUFON UFO Journa l
gation into the case. Today, most of thedetails of the case are commonly re-ported, such as the medical examina-tion, star maps, highly technologicale q u i p m e n t , t e l e p a t h i c h a i r l e s sentities...and so on.
At the time, however, UFO abduc-tions were considered to be extremelyrare events, with only a few recorded
cases. Investigators were impressed bythe m any details that corresponded withother cases that had not been published, such as that of Betty Andreasson.
So m e of these deta i ls inc lude astrange stillness preceding the encoun-ter, levitation of entities, movementthrough solid objects, telepathic com-munication, the medical examination, the appearance of the ETs, and manyother details.
As Druffe l and Rogo write, "Thesimilarities are even m ore striking whe n
one realizes that these two abductionsoccurred so far apart in time and locale."Ano ther detail that was first revealed
in the T ujunga Canyon case is the factthat encounters can be contagious.
As Druffe l and Rogo wrote in 1980,"We know of no other case in the ar-chives of ufology typified by the odd'contagion' phenomenon that seems tohave spread from Sara and Jan to Emily, and then to Lori and Jo. This fact tendsto make the vastly complicated Shaw-Whitley case even more important toour eventual understanding of the UFO
mystery."Today, the m any details first revealed
in the Tu junga Canyon case and the fewothers that preceded it have been con-firmed numerous times in the hundredsof cases that followed.
FOUR: Red Bluff encounter
On Aug. 13, 1960, and for the next'five days, California experienced one ofthe most intense U FO waves ever re -corded.
The wave was centered over the
northern California town of Red Bluff,bu t actually encompassed W illow Creek,Concord, Corning, Eureka, PleasantHill, Healdsburg, Santa R osa, R oseville,Mineral , Dunsmuir , Honeydew, andRedlands.
It all began at 10:05 PM on Aug. 13when Deputy Sheriff Clarence Fry ofR ed Bluf f observed a large glowing ob -ject over the Red Bluff prison. T w ohours later, two other patrol officersobserved a large glowing object hover-

enact a cover-up, stating thatno objects were seen. Theythen said that balloons wereresponsible. The incident,however, was witnessed bys e v e r a l t h o u s a n d p e o p l e ,
making it the most widelyviewed UFO sighting in Cali-fornia history.
It eventually caused thefirst congressional investiga-t i o n into the s u b j e c t ofUFOs. A later de-classified

While the "planes" were suspected to
officers alerted neighboring sheriff's sta-tions and took off chasing th e object .
Meanwhile, law enforcement officers
in numerous other cities also observedthe same or different objects. At thesame time, hundreds of calls poured in
from citizens.Researcher Paris Flammonde calls
this wave, "One of the most impres-sive multiple sightings."
R esearcher Jam es Harder, Ph.D, was
so impressed by the case that on July29, 1968, he delivered an official paperin support of the case to the Commit-teeon Science and Astronautics, Houseof Representatives, United States Con-gress.
Incredibly, Air Force Blue Book of-ficials labeled the case as "atmosphericinversion" without any investigation.Still, this case remains one of the mostintense waves in California history.
THREE: Battle of Los Angeles
In February of 1942, only a fewmonths after thebombingof Pearl Har-bor, Los Angeles experienced a visita-tion by dozens of unknown objects, onelarge one which hovered over the cityfor a period of at least six hours.
The incident caused an enforced to-tal blackou t, and the military was calledin to fire upon the strange object. Byo r d e r of Genera l Mars ha l l , 1 ,430rounds of amm unition were fired at theobject, which apparently sustained nodamage.
Numerous searchlights were trainedon the craft, which was also photo-graphed. Six people died of heart at-tacks, car-accidents, or falling debris. The next day, the LA Times printed a

TWO: Implant removal surgeries
On Aug. 19, 1995, one of the mostimportant events in UFO history tookplace in a d octor's office in Ventura, CA.At 5 PM on that day, Dr Roger Leir,
DPM, perform ed three surgeries to re-move alleged "alien implants" from the
bodies of three abductees. The surgeries were successful, and
the three "implants" were recovered andsent off for scientific analysis.
This, however, was only the begin-ning. Further successful surgeries fo l-lowed. By 2003, Leir and his team hadperf orm ed nearly a dozen surgeries. Ineach case, the procedures were success-ful and the implants were recovered.
Here's where the story gets incred-ibly interesting. The studies of the im-
plants are showing rem arkable featuresthat may eventually provide conclusiveproof of extraterrestrial intervention.
Some of the unusual features includea similar or identical appearance of im-plant from patient to patient, the pres-ence of an electromagnetic field com-ing from the implants, strong magneticproperties, fluorescen ce, a com positionthat is elementally similar to meteorites,a lack of inflammatory or foreign body

response in surrounding hum an tissues,an d more.
The complete s tory is told in Leir'sgroundbreaking book, The Aliens and The
Scalpel, though the research is still on-going.
The surgeries have rocked the UFOcommunity. Bu dd Hopkins w rites, "Dr.Roger Leir ha s finally an d dramatically
laid his cards on the table. His carefullydocum ented surgical removal of pos-sible alien implants can no longer be
ignored. It may well turn out to be of
extraordinary importance."R aymond Fowler writes, "Dr. Leir is
to be praised for his pioneering researchinto the removal and analysis of sus-pected alien implants. Only peer reviewand acceptance separate his findingsfrom the proverbial 'smoking gun' ofphysical evidence for the abduction phe-nomenon."
Whitley Strieber writes, "Sometimesthe whole world knows w hen a historyfigure makes his history...Dr. RogerLeir is such a historical figure. The timewill comewhen the extraordinary break-through that he has made is noted ine v e r y textbook...the e v i d e n c e is
here... so overwhelmingly pow erful thata sane person cannot easily deny that itis real."
Dr. Leir himself writes, "If these sci-en t i f i ca l l y der ived r es u l t s are notdisproven by subseq uent analysis, thenwe can safely conclude that some indi-
viduals w ith abduction h istories have ar-tificially manufactured objects in theirbodies of a demonstrably extraterres-trial origin. In short, we now have the'smoking gun' of ufology— the hardphysical evidence of a continuing alienpresence on Earth!"
ONE: Edwards AFB visitations
Many C alifornia m ilitary bases havebeen associated with UFOs, includingGeorge, Hamilton, Norton, Miramar,Castle, Alameda, and others. Of all of
them, however, EdwardsAir Force Base(formerly Muroc) tops the list.Located in the vast Mojave Desert,
this area has attracted an incredibleamount and variety of UFO activityfrom 1947 to the present day. In fact, the events at Edw ards AFB are of sucha magnitude that they may rival even theRoswell incident.
The story begins onJu ly 7,1947. Onthat day, the base experienced a seriesof seven fly-overs by UFOs as wit-

nessed by dozens of military officersand pilots. Listed as Bl ue Bo ok casenumber 50 (unidentified), this encoun-ter changed the way the Air Forcehandled UFOs.
As researcher Michael David Hallwri tes , "Those disc s ight ings overMuroc on the seventh and eight reallyshook up the Pentagon, [and] were th e
pivotal event which sprung the UnitedStates military into serious action on thesaucer mystery. . . the incident led theU nited States Arm y Air Force to issueclassified orders requiring reports of any'saucer-like' objects to be given to theTechnical Intelligence Division of theAir Materiel Command."
Researcher Richard Dolan writes,"The Mu roc incident continues to pro-vide evidence fo r military knowledge, interest, and secrecy regarding UFOs."
This, however, was only the firstsighting. O ver the next 50 years the basewould be visited again and again byUFOs, including in 1952, 1954, 1958,1965, 1967, 1978, 1995, 1998, andmore.
Several of these sightings w ere madeby extremely repu table witnesses, in -cluding Air Force base officers, and onone occasion, astronaut Gordon Coo-per. In 1958, Cooper was at the basewhen a U FO landed on the dry lake bed.
Base personnel filmed the incident, and Cooper viewed the developed film.A s he says, "Good c lose-up shots .
Nothing like I had ever seen...doubleinverted saucer shape. It didn't have anywings on it or anything.. .There was nodoubt in my mind that it was madesomeplace other than Earth."
Another noteworthy inc ident oc-curred on Oct. 7, 1965, during whichseveral jets were scrambled to interceptUFOs which were hovering over thebase.
As researcher Steven Greer writes,'This extreme ly imp ortant case involvesa seasoned Air Force traffic controller,
an official TJFO officer,' four separateradar stations, lock-on from onboardradar on a jet interceptor, many hours,an d many objects over several hours.
"The debunkers and those whowould ridicule the UFO matter need tobe able to explain away all of these ele-ments—and the voice tape of the actualevent."
While the sightings, UFO-airplanechases, and landings are enough to place
Edwards at the top of this list, the storydoesn't en d there. At this point, thingsbecome very controversial.
According to a growing number ofsources, on Feb. 20 , 1954, PresidentEisenhower v is i ted Edwards AFB,where he and other high-ranking offi-cials had an alleged face-to-face diplo-matic meeting with extraterrestrials.
Numerous researchers have lookedinto the story. At this point, however,th e whole truth remains obscured.
Beyond that (if that isn't enough)there are also claims of crashed UFOs,reverse engineering of UFO hardware, and even actual live aliens working atthe base along with humans. W hile
these stories remain.on the fringe ofUFO research, the stories continue to
circulate.A few conclusions
As with any list, there are other en-counters/events that could jus t as eas-ily have included, and another investi-gator would probably come up witii adifferent and equally valid list.
All of the above cases, an d m a n ymore, are presented in my book in de-tail. Although I've been investigatingUFOs fo r years, I am still shocked byhow many cases there are.
My other big surprise w as just ho wmuch evidence there is in support ofU FO s .
Minnesota women encounter
strange entities on highwayBy William I. McNeff
Minnesota State Director
Location: near Duluth, MNDate: Aug. 7, 1979Witnesses: tw oT he primary witness w as referred to
me by her cousin, a form er missionary, who is a friend of mine arid of my wife.O ur friend vouched for the honesty ofthe witness.
O ur friend and her husband told methat the details of her account nevervaried over the years. I can confirm theconsistency between my interview ofthe witness and her journal account of1979. The witness is now retired.
At the time of the encounter, the wit-ness ("Liz") w as about 50 years old andemployed by a well-known company. Agroup of her co-workers were planningto hold an evening bridal, shower foranother co-worker at their manager'shom e at Caribou Lake.
The w itness' house ha d needed paint-ing, so she and her husb and had taken a
week of vacation time to work on theproject. The w eather during the day was."perfect," and after hours of work shepicked up a co-worker, "Ruth," and theydrove to the shower at Caribou Lake.
Liz recorded the details in a journalthe next day.
Liz and R u t h left th e party at about9:10 PM. She repor ts , "It was darkenough by this time that I drove withthe lights on from the lake to the black-

"We both noticed three f i gu re szig-zagging over the center line straightahead—in my judgement maybe 11/2mile. Ruth said, What in the world isgoing on down there?' I said, 'It lookslike three little ones on bikes, bu t they'dbetter move, cause here I come.'
"Stepping on the gas, I switched thelo w to high beam s, an d they did not getof f the road. As we came upon them, one [and then ap parently the other] jus tzoomed [did not walk] off to the left, across th e ditch, and as I switched tothe low beam I had one dead center withth e right front headlight.
"We both kep t saying, 'My God wha tis it?' A hu ge head, no hair, no ears, hug eeyes set in deep hollows, wrinkles orfolds, but no protruding nose, a smallslit for a mouth."
W hen interviewed, the w itness said,"They looked so odd, almost a luminous

"We knew we could not hit the "be-ing,' and the thought of backing upnever occurred to us. After about 8 to10 minutes, I decided to put the car ingear and cramp th e wheels to the leftand see if the movement would alert

"She said, 'Yes, lets get out of here!'W e managed to bypass it, but in doingso, it naturally stood closer to her sideof the car, and wh en it got alongside ofthe right lower windshield, shecouldn'tstand it. She yelled and quickly moved
almost on top of me."When I was sure we had it cleared,I took off fast, and being so upset, Itook a wrong turn dow n the old road intotal darkness. I knew immediately themistake, as we could see the cars goingby on the m ain highway.
"In haste I ground a few gears to findreverse and got to the stop sign by thehighway. Now a car had approached thestop, coming from the same area we hadleft, an d took off (to their right).
"We looked at them carefully, hop-ing it was some of our friends from the
shower. But they were not, and thereare no other known Minnesota reportsfo r that night."
The two women continued on theirway hom e, discussing the encounter "fu-riously." They could not come up withan answer as to what this being was, butdecided it was not a human, not an ani-mal, not a trick or ma sked being.
They thought of the possibility of"an ou ter space being," but agreed theydidn't know anything about them and
had dou bted their existence. R uth was
very happy to see her home, saying, "I'lltalk to you at work," and hurriedly en-tering the house. Liz found out later thatRuth's husband ridiculed her story.
Liz also was most anxious to gethome, and scrambled fearfully into thehouse. There sh e found that after a longhot day of painting, her husband hadshowered and gone to bed.
She writes, "My niece had droppedin to visit and needed a ride home (ap-proximately 3miles). I couldn't convince

"I couldn't think of anything exceptthis horribl e exp erience, and related thewhole thing to Jean [her niece], and inturn she was almost afraid to get out ofthe car and go to her apartment.
"When I came home to a quiet houseand prepared for bed, I fell apart. I criedand begged my husband to wake up andlisten to me. I had to tell him, and it
couldn't wait till tomorrow as he re-quested.
"He did listen, bu t could offer nocomforting solution as to what we hadseen. He did say Why didn't you hit itan d throw it in the trunk and it could

abou t the encounter. Also, she and Ru thboth told theoffice crew, who suggestedthey report it to the authorities. They, however, did not. They had a fear ofreporting it more widely an d possiblybeing laughed at or considered mentallyill.
Liz writes, "It was the most terrify-ing experience either one of us had gonethrough."
When on occasion .she meets her
co-witness, they mention the event, butdo not discuss it. Her co-witness doesnot want to drink about th e event an drefused my request for an interview. Sh edid not rule this ou t completely fo r sometime in the future, however.
T he dash lights, which had gone offwhen they stopped for the creature, re -mained inoperative. Liz' husband is amechanic, but he couldn't make the dashlights work again.
They took it to another mechanic's

garage (Johnson's Auto Electric), andthey couldn't fix the lights either.
W hy only the dash lights failed, andnone of the rest of the electrical sys-tem, is an interesting question. No craftwhich might have contained mecha-nisms to cause the dash light failure w asobserved.
T he fact of the irreparable dash lightsadds to the women's credibility. The
detail of the creatu res "floating," "zig-zagging," and "zooming" rather thanwalking or running, while seeming fan-tastic to persons unfamiliar with ac-counts of ETs, is a fairly common oc-currence in accounts of the beings as-sociated w ith UFOs.
This investigator can construct nonull hypotheses that can account for thefacts, other than that of simultaneoushallucinations and coincidental failureof the dash lights. The probability ofthis is obviously infinitesimal.
T he prime witness, although she hadgone semi-public at the time of theevent, understandabl y does not w ant anyadditional publicity at this time. She isin her 70s and experiencing medicalproblems.
Both women were—and are—married
and had responsible jobs. They reportedtheir experience in spite of perceivedrisks to their reputations to coworkersan d relatives. T he prime witness mustbe rated high in credibility and in accu-racy of recollection.
The beings she reported seeing m us tbe considered to be definitely unidenti-fied. This experience was the apparentbeginning of a wave of UFO reportsthat continued for the rest of 1979.

light that slowly rose from the marsh at
about 20 degrees elevation.
When first observed, it appeared asbig as my fist held at arm's length, or
about as big as the moon. The light con-
tinued to ascend into the morning sky,
appearing to get bigger as it came ourway. It took at least 15minutes to move
from the 20-degree elevation to a point
directly overhead
Now overhead, it remained motion-
less and soundless, but seemed to
wobble slightly at times. There were no
discernable appendages.Mr. Faulkner said he thought it might
have been a weather balloon that had
been launched from Alvin Calendar Air
Force Base some 30 miles to the north.
Mr. Vasquez offered that it was "very
strange looking." Mr. Faulkner's son saidit could have been "one of those UFO
things." I reserved judgment.
After about 30minutes observing the
"ball of light" Mr. Vasquez and I de-cided to launch the boat. As the sun
rose, I noticed that the object started to
reflect light off its surface, which ap-
peared metallic.
At that point, I told Mr. Vasquez to
stop the boat so I could get a better view. The object now looked like the barrage
balloons that were used in World War
II. Light still reflected off its surface. It
then split into two of the barrage bal-loon shapes.
Clouds then started to roll in and
obscure the objects. We didn't feel like
fishing, and returned to the launch.
When I got home, I told my wifeabout the incident. She laughed and
asked if I had been drinking. I had only
black coffee that morning. I tried to takea nap. Sleep did not come, so I decided
to report the incident to Air Force In-
telligence, located in New Orleans.
An Air Force major , I cannot recall
his name, took my statement andthanked me for calling. He called backthree more times that afternoon seek-
ing more information. On the last call,
he asked if I could come into his officeon Monday morning, to which I agreed.

MUFON ForumA lack of consistency?
Although originally published else-
where, I commend the journal for re-printing the excellent two-part pieceby
Deardorff, Haisch, Maccabee, and
Puthoff. They have cogently summa-
rized a rationale for serious mainstream
study of the UFO phenomenon.
All members of MUFON should
share it with their scientific and aca-
demic colleagues cowered by the fearof peer censure or public ridicule. Re-
spected as professionals in their own
disciplines, their case should cause any-
one interested in the search for truth to
stand up and take notice.Given their courage to take such astand, I wonder why they, too, felt it
necessary to make two statements that
are inconsistent with their own logic. One is "...the fact that not...in past
millennia, have we been colonized, con-
quered, or exterminated, nor has soci-
ety been traumatized by any ETs..."To make such a declaration of "fact"
goes against literally thousands of wit-
ness reports and artifacts to the effectthat beings more advanced than humans
have intervened in human society, be-
ginning from at least the end of the Pa-leolithicEra up till, and perhaps beyond, the fall of the Roman Republic.
Accounts as detailed and as credible
as those quoted in their article can befound in Hebrew, Sumerian, Vedic,
Egyptian, and other texts, as well as in
the oral traditions on every continent.
Second, they write "...it appears all
too evident that ETs have not inter-
vened in world affairs in any benevo-lent manner that would have forestalled
human warfare, famine, and disease."
Once again, such a declaration of"evidence" is contravened by the sto-ries and drawings of credible witnesses(they had no reason to make up their
stories, and nothing to gain by showing
their inferiority to more advanced be-ings).
The most well-known to most West-
erners is the account of Noah's receiptof foreknowledge of the coming Flood
and blueprints to build a craft. After the
cataclysm, the biblical account of tech-

contravenes the authors' assertion.
Many analyses have been written onthis topic, including my own Gods, Genes

One of theauthors , Salas ,was a mis s i l e l a u n c h o f f i c e r a tMalmstrom when the event occurred,thus providing a firsthand view of theincident. T he other au thor, Klotz, hasused his expertise in gathering FOIA(Freedom of Information Act) docu-
ments to back up and expand Salas'personal experience and research.
Salas is a graduate of the Air ForceAcademy, served on active duty fo rseven years, and holds a Masters degreein aerospace engineering from the AirForce Institute of Technoogy. He alsohas a Masters degree in education fromthe U niversity of W ashington.
In addition, he worked briefly as anengineer for Martin-M arietta Aerosp aceand Rockwell International before serv-ing 22 years in the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) until his retire-ment in 1995.Klotz has had an interest in UFOs
since 1957, and with partner DaleGoudie founded the Computer U FONetwork (CUFON) . Klotz has filedmore than 1,000 FOIA requests.
Thus both authors have excel lentbackgrounds for dealing with the mis-sile incident at Malmstrom.
In addition, veteran U FO investiga-to r R aymond Fowler, who was con-
MAY 2005
nected with the Minuteman missiles
through his work with Sylvania, providessignificant correlating evidence in theForeward.
Sylvania was under contract to de-velop an d build the Ground ElectricalSystem fo r command and control of theMinuteman II Intercontinental BallisticMissile.
At the time of the incident, Fowler,w as thu s directly connected to the Stra-tegic Air Comm and Bases (SAC) whereMinuteman I I was deployed, with ac -cess to individuals who informed him
of the UFO incident at Malmstrom. Some of these key individuals saidthat lab testing indicated that electro-magnetic effects from the U F O s had af-fected strategic electrical e quip me nt.
Utilizing hard evidence, this bookshows that UFO s did, in fact, shut downup to 20 M i n u t e m a n m i s s i l e s a tMalmstrom, an d thus do qualify as amilitary/security threat, despite govern-ment statements to the contrary.
In addition to a detailed account ofthe Malmstrom shutdown, other inci-dents related to UFO encounters with
missiles are also recounted.Am ong these is w hat could have been
a world-wide disaster involving whatappears to have been the activation ofSoviet missiles by a U F O .
For a very tense period of time forthe Soviets, the unintended activationseemed to be leading to a l aunch ofthose missiles toward the U.S. Fortu-nately, the programm ed launch was ter-minated, apparently by the UFO .
T he first half of the book is devotedto detailing the missile shutd ow n, related
incidents, and discussion of the govern-ment coverup, while the second half iscomposed of appendexes detailing theMinutem an missile system, acronyms, and FOIA documents. There is exten-sive footnoting, but no index.
Those looking for excellent evidenceof the reality of U FO s and their poten-tial military threat, as well as equallyclear evidence of government coverup, will find it in this book.
Highly recommended.

investigated.
Sightings increase after program
I talked to Peter Davenport, directorof the National U FO Reporting Center( U F O R C ) , an d Peter w a s beingswamped by 1,400 sighting reportsshordy after th e Peter Jennings broad-cast of "UFOs: Seeing is Believing!"
NUFORC traditionally receives be-tween 250 and 500 reports per month,bu t the number has tripled this month.
Peter was excited about a report of aDecember, 1925, sighting he had justreceived from Illinois. It was submittedin handwritten form , and the report in-cluded a note from the witness' daugh-ter.
"Peter,"Enclosed is my Dad's written rep ort
of his 1925 sighting. (I have the origi-nal.) I hav e not edited it in any way. Nor
did I discuss it with him to tell him w hatto put in it. This is his unadulteratedversion, in other words.
"H e still won't agree to be inter-viewed by anyone, and w ants to remainanonymous. So if you have questions, Iguess I'm your source. You can ask me,and I'll ask him. Sorry, that'll have todo.
"This occurred in Henry County, Il -linois. It might help your understandingthat, as Dad has previously told m e, hewas standing on a ditch bank that was
higher than the field th e 'craft' wentacross when it left."I t seemed to be low over the field
and had to go up to clear the hill and aneighbor's barn that was on the hill onth e other side of the field. In otherwords, it didn't streak across the sky.
'The barn it cleared w hen it left w ason the neighbor's farm, not the barnwhere Dad was. He previously men-tioned an 'odd' sound of a low hum, orbuzz ."

The handwritten report submitted bythe witness, who was born in 1914, fol-lows:
"The event that I describe herein hap -pened in 1925, between Christmas andNew Years (Christmas vacation). Threepeople were present: U ncle #1, Uncle#2, and me.
"Uncle #2 was in the cow section ofth e b a r n , a n dUncle #1 was inthe horse b a rn .(We w ere l a te rthan us ua l withthe duties of do-ing the f a r mchores.)
Uncle #1 sug-gested that I takea bucket that w asnearby and go tothe corn crib for
corn for the horses. I exited the barnand started for the corn crib. T he corncrib was at a lower elevation than thebarn, so as I started to descend to that
level."I stopped to admire the scenery be-
cause it was such a picture-postcardwinter scene—about 15 degrees F, freshsnowfall, clear sky, wind was calm, so Istopped to look around. T he stars werebeginning to come out.
"In viewing the stars, looking to myleft, I noticed two stars, brighter thanthe others. This caught my attention, soI studied them a little. It occurred tome that one of them w as moving awayfrom the other.
"As I w atched this going on, all of asudden, an object is above me, and thewhole area becomes as light as day. Ilooked up and looked all around. Icould see the neighbor's building as clearas day.
'The object above me, the source ofthe light, was not like a searchlight, m orelike daylight, so I could look up at thisobject, just a short distance above me.How ever, all I could see was a dark (notblack) space about 10-feet in diameter,

"I t remained there for a short time.T he light dimmed, then it glided overthe field at about the sam e level that itwas above me, about 25 feet in the air.
"I t w ent directly toward the buildingson ranch #2. It had to ascend in orderto clear the cow barn (a huge barn), andsailed off to the northwest, and it fadedfrom view.
"I returned with the corn. U ncle #1and Uncle #2 were emerging from thebarn. Someone said, 'What w as that?'Also, someo ne said, W e will read abou tit in th e newspaper when we returnhome.'
"When we go t home, Grandpa (namedeleted), w ho always read th e paperthoroughly, said he saw nothing in thepaper of such an occurrence, so that wasthe end of the event.
"Place: (name deleted) Ranch, abou tsix miles no rth of Atkinson. No longerin existence, as such . It was in a rem otearea, about V z mile from the public road.
"I was not frightened. I think the ob-ject was either tinted glass, or some kindof fabric."
Peter states, "Given that there prob-ably are MANY people alive today w howitnessed UFOs prior to 1947, w ewould like to encourage anyone w howitnessed such an event, or who knowsa friend or family member w ho wit-nessed such an event, to subm it the re-port of the incident.

Peru crashed craft recovery?Marine Corps Lance Corporal John

He reports, "About midnight, whileI was on guard duty, Sergeant Allen an dSergeant Atkinson told me an aircraftcrashed, and they needed us to go and
secure the crash site. Early that morn-ing we drove six Hummers to a posi-tion close to the crash site, jus t when itstarted to get light.
"We walked towards the crash siteand saw a huge gash in the land where
something had crashed. Everything wasburned, and it was like something ha dalmost cu t warm butter with a knife. Itw as like something on fire or had somekind of energy like a laser had cut it. Itwas really strange.
"Anyway, I was in the front with Sgt.

PERCEFBy Stanton T. Friedman
More MJ-12 questions
New questions have been raisedabout th e MJ-12 documents from anunexpected source, namely PaulKimball, a lawyer w ho started and op-erates Redstar Films in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, and who has made three UFO
documentaries. The first was "Stanton T. Friedman
is Real," which 'was broadcast in 2002on the Canadian Space Channel. It was
a 48-minute biographical documentaryfilmed in Roswell; at the Irvine, CA,
MUFON Symposium; in Cedar Rapids,IA; in my office in Fredericton, NewBrunswick, etc. There were critics in-
cluded, as well as friends. The second was "Do You Believe in
Majic?" This w as primarily a point-counterpoint between myself an d KarlPflock, with others commenting as wellabout the MJ-12 documents.
It ended with Paul—who was the di-rector, producer, and narrator-indicat-ing that, on balance of probabilities, theMJ-12 documents were probably genu-ine. This also ran 48 minutes, and was
broadcast on Canadian TV in 2004.Both are available f rom UFORI,
POB 958, Houlton, ME 04730-0958(|15each).
The third was"Aztec," which seemedto conclude that there w as probably asaucer crash near Aztec, NM, in 1948,
based on the outstanding research ef -fort made by Scott Ramsey.
Paul is also working on a documen-tary on cattle mutilations, leaning heavilyon the work of Canadian researcherFern Belzil.
However, Paul has now changed histune about both MJ-12 and Aztec. Heintends to re-edit DYBIM, reflecting his
new conclusion that the documentsprobably aren't genuine.
His first claim isbased on the notionthat since Vannevar Bush an d PresidentTruman were not on very good termsin the post-war period, Truman wouldnot have appointed Bush, despite his
outstanding background as a scientist
engineer during W W 2 with the Office
of Scientific Research and Develop-ment , to such a position.
According to the Truman-Forrestalmemo of Sept. 24, 1947, Truman au-
thorized Forrestal (not Bush) to proceedwith Operation Majestic 12,but didsay,
"It continuesto be my feel-ing that any fu-ture consider-ations relativeto the ultimatedisposition of
this mattershould restsolely with theO f f ice of thePresident fol-lowing appro-priate discus-
„ _, . . sions . withStanYmdman yourself) Dr.
Bus h , and the Director of Central .In-telligence."
Paul takes care of Wilbert Smith's,Nov. 21, 1950, comment about flyingsaucers ("Their Modus Operandi is un-
known, bu t concentrated effort is be-ing made by a small group headed byDr. Vannevar Bush") by claiming thatDr. Robert Sarbacher, source of Smith'sinfo in a classified discussion arrangedby Canada's military attache, intention-ally misled Smith with the expectationthat th e information, though classified, would eventually, by some mysteriousmeans, make its way up the Canadiansecurity chain and be passed on to the
Russians to convince them that the UShad access to alien technology.
No evidence has been presented thatthis happened or was the intention of
Sarbacher. Furthermore, he attempts to
discredit Smith with character assassi-nation andbringing damning commentsmade by Dr. Omond Solandt in lettersto various UFO researchers in the 1980slong after Smith's death. .
Solandt w as sort of the CanadianVannevar Bush, guiding the effor ts ofthe Defense Research Board. On Sept.
24 , 1947, Bush had been named head
of the US Research and DevelopmentBoard, a successor to the Joint Researchand Development Board, which had
succeeded the OSRD.
This was the date of the infamousTruman-Forrestal memo establishing
MJ-12, and the only date in a period ofseveral months when Bush, Truman, and Secretary Forrestal were al l togetherat th e White House.
Obviously Truman did NOT appointBush to head MJ-12. Truman said toForrestal, "You are hereby autho-
rized...."Furthermore, in Bush's notes on themeetingwe find this statement: "...cer-tainly in the new post, I would be ratherfrequently in contact an d that if therewas an impression [in the scientific com-munity] that I did not have his confi-dence he felt that that impression wouldsoon be corrected by future relations."
If Truman had no faith in Bush,w hywould he have named himhead of the
R & DB? His MJ-12 activities would bein total secrecy and not a matter forpublic debate.
In a TOP SECRET memo of 16December, 1947, Forrestal's special as -sistant,John Ohly, sent a memo to Bushnoting that he had been appointed byThe War Council as chairman of a spe-cial committee to deal with "Prepara-tions against a sneak attack," an d loadsof resources were available to him. (Noindication of whether this attack wouldbe from Russia or aliens or...)
General Hoyt Vandenberg, also anMJ-12 member and USAF Chief ofStaff, was a member of this committee.
TOP SECRET minutes of a laterW ar Council meeting note that al l mem-bers had received a copy of a TOP SE-
CRET item from Bush, an d should beprepared to discuss it. There is no clueas to what it was about.
This committee and MJ-12 were notpublic groups wherein political consid-erations might have been very impor-tant, bu t were highly classified BlackBudget groups. It seems to me that

Bush's advice and knowledge would
have been sought because of his long
history of massive contribution to the
military ef for t via his earlier chairman-
ship of the NACA, and his heading of
theOSRDandJRDB.
Nobody was more knowledgeable
concerning who had what capabilities
at which installation for top-notch,
highly-classified research— such as tryingto determine Modus Operandi of fly-
ing saucers.
Truman certainly had strong views
about how research grants might be dis-
tributed, etc, and zealously guarded con-
trol. Bush had been allowed much lee-
way by Roosevelt.
A book strongly contributing to
Paul's feelings about Bush vs. Truman
is G. Pascal Zachary's Endless Frontier:
I 'annevar Bush, Engineer of the American
Century (The Free Press, 1997). I note
with dismay that Vandenberg and WarCouncil are not even listed in the index.
I had a conversation with Zachary, a
Wall Street Journal reporter, years ago,
and at that time fel t he was not very fa-
miliar with Bush's classified activities.
Solandt admitted that he and Bush
had indeed discussed UFOs, but wea-
sel-worded j u s t what was said and why,
and implied that he knew of no big se-
cret US effort-though if it was account-
able to the President, he probably
wouldn't know about it.
None of his letters were sent topeople with a need to know, in contrast
to. the Sarbacher-Smith exchange.
I had located Sarbacher many years
ago because of a memo from Canadian
Arthur Bray. I met with him on hisyacht
in Palm Beach, and also met later with
Solandt in Ontario.
My own feeling was that Sarbacher
was being very straightforward about a
small event in a very busy life.I fel t that Solandt wasbeing very care-
fu l in the manner I have found com-
mon with people who have classifiedinformation they cannot divulge to oth-
ers not having a clearance and need to
know— trying to avoid direct lying, but
not giving out much information either.
Solandt could denigrate Smith when
nobody was around to defend him. But
when Smith was awarded posthumously
the Canadian Engineering Award (not
awarded every year), the citation noted
"...the Award was made in recognition
of a lifetime of dedicated and distin-
MAY 2005
guished service to the advancement of
technical knowledge in the Canadian
broadcasting industry, the improvement
of its techniques, the protection of its
interests, of an exampleof diligence and
integrity and in consideration of the
universal respect and regard that
Wilbert's efforts had earned throughout
the broadcasting industry, in the gov-
ernment of Canada, and in other areas."I think all of us would greatly appre-
ciate such praise from our professional
colleagues. Yes, Wilbert had many in-
terests, some of which might displease
some people. So what?
Kimball also raised two other points:
Why was Forrestal not replaced on
Majestic 12 until 01 August, 1950, even
though he left office as Secretaryof De-
fense in January of 1949 and died on
M ay 22,1949? Was it MJ-11 for awhile?
Obviously, I am not psychic. How-
ever, let us notice that the EisenhowerBriefing Document (EBD) states that
Forrestal's "death created a vacancy
which remained unfilled until01 August,
1950, upon which date Gen. Walter B.
Smith was designated as permanent re-
placement."
We have no way of knowing whether
he may have been a temporary mem-
ber, and then was made permanent
when Truman named him the new Di-
rector of Central Intelligence. The first
three DCIs were already MJ-12 mem-
bers. Finally, Paul asked why I had not in-
vestigated the crash noted on page 5 of
the EBD on 06 December, 1950, in the
El Indio-Guerrero area of the Texas-
Mexican border.
The reasons are simple: I live a long
way from there and had nothing to work
with, neither names of people nor a
specific location. The EBD says "what
remained of the objecthad been almost
totally incinerated. Such material as
could be recovered was transported to
the A.E.G. facility at Sandia, NewMexico."
I have been to Sandia. The chance
of getting any information from this
high security nuclear weapons labwould
be nil.
Furthermore, I was well aware that
some investigation was being done by
two Texans, Dennis Stacey and Tom
Deuley, of MUFON.
' They had some leads which didn't
pan out. I do know that there had been
MUFON UFO J O U R N A L
a National Red alert called on that date
because of something flying towards the
Southwest as noted by Dr. Bruce
Maccabee in his book about The FBI
and UFOs.
I had my hands and budget ful l with
my Roswell Investigation, where there
was a lot to work with.
In short then, I can find no reason in
the face of these challenges to changemy mind about MJ-12, the documents
or the group. Real as described!

pleted the form as requested with rough
drawings, and asked the major whatwas
his opinion on the sighting.
Without answering, he excused him
self and came back with a clipped, undated newspaper article from the Time
Picayune newspaper. Basically the article
said that an aircraft had gone down in
the vicinity of my sighting.
Of course I told him that this ball o
light rose from the marsh and ascended
above us and didn't go down. He of
fered no explanation or opinion.
Feeling that my intelligence had been
insulted, I left his office more perplexed
than ever, and decided to check out hisstory. My first contact was with Navy
Chief MauriceGerhardt (now deceased
stationed at Alvin Calendar Field inPlaquemines Parish.
Chief Gerhardt was a meteorologis
at the base and a neighbor of mine.
asked if an aircraft had gone down in
the marsh on the day of my sighting
and whether any weather balloons were
launched within my sighting time frame
After a day or two he got back with
me and reported negative on both ques
tions.Subsequently, I went to the Jefferson
Parish Library and went through every
issue of the previous week's newspapers, searching for the article the majo
had shown me. There was no such ar
ticle.Obviously, someone was trying to
discredit my sighting bydisinformation
I stand by every word I've reported, and
have no reason to fabricate such a story
I believe if the major followed pro
tocol, that signed form I completed in
1959 might still be found, perhap
somewhere in the National Archives.

New contest being planned
MUFON isconsidering sponsorship
of a "Best UFO Evidence Paper" con-

technical papers documenting what the
authors believe is their best evidence.
The papers must be based on actual
people, places, events, and evidence.W e won't be looking for stories, theo-
ries, or opinions for this contest. The
papers m u s t be strictly evidence-based.
Prizes, rules, restrictions, etc. will be
defined in the near future . I hope man yof youwill consider this opportunity to
participate in exposing your evidence to
a potentially large audience. .
