Dear Students, Staff, Family and Friends

As you will all be aware, we had have a large group of Year 11 students and staff in the Northern Territory as part of their immersion experience, and all arrived back safely last night. They have taken part in the GARMA Festival in NE Arnhem Land and have visited sites of interest in Darwin, as well as Melville or Bathurst Islands. making and shaping spears. Overall, our students have been very positive, adapting superbly and mixing well across the board! In fact, doing us very proud! Our group has embarked on the immersion visits to Wurrumiyanga, Bathurst Island and Milikapiti Melville Island. The students and staff really contributed by helping in the class room and then conducting activities. The whole experience has broadened relationships and understanding. Each visit was enhanced by cultural activities and engagement with local art & history. We were very grateful to local hosts and our presentation of footy boots, balls, sporting gear, toothpaste and toothbrushes, was very much appreciated. Exploring Territory terrain with a visit to Lichfield National Park provided an insight into the environmental jewels of the NT. As we heard and experienced at GARMA, cultural and environmental tourism is a very sustainable economic pathway.” Below are some of the reflections from the students on their experience.

Sophie Lewis - “A massive part for me was in Bathurst Island when we gave out the second hand football boots to the children. The look of excitement on each child’s face was precious and made me realise how lucky we really are.” Claudia Chapple - “I will take away many unique lessons and experiences from this trip, especially to just enjoy life, full of laughs, smiles and joy, just like the Tiwi kids do. Riley Martin - “Without the eye opening experience, I wouldn’t fully understand the true meaning of family and what it means to be proud of where you’re from and your background. Hayden Lawson - “Thank you again, this was one truly unforgettable experience.” Jasmine Micallef - “My favourite part of the Garma festival was basket making, I loved how the indigenous women let you into their culture.” Tash Llora - “It really makes you think how much we take for granted and how much we really have and how lucky we are to have just the little things.”

Helina de Winter - “Whilst at the festival I loved experiencing their culture and spending time with the young children” Emily Rockley - “It has given me a new look on life, and a want to do something in the world.” Chloe Williams - “The indigenous children were so appreciative of everything they have and they seem to enjoy every aspect of their life.” Isabella Walker - “There were two key moments that not only touched my heart but changed my life forever. One was a little four year old boy named Bokeim. He taught me to notice and to cherish the littlest of things that most people take for granted. The second key point on this immersion was learning to be proud of your family, your traditions, culture and community.” Chelsea Wagner - “I have come to realise that there is more to life than technology and money.” Britt Nolan - “Garma has helped to build my confidence and has allowed me to try new things.” Jordan Wust - “A common theme that was shown across the many language groups is a strong spiritual connection to the land. Learning about this really helped me open my eyes to how lucky I am.” Ethan Donovan - “This trip taught me many things, from the difference in cultures, to self-understanding.” Kelsey Webber - “It was so eye-opening to see a part of Australian heritage that I had nearly no experience with.” Tess Harrison - “I learnt that we take a lot for granted and we are very privileged compared to how the aboriginals live.” Mikki Boden - “I really loved seeing the Bungel of Aboriginal’s dancing with their clan to tell a story.”

Slade Blunt - “I can start to see ways to help improve their lives and one way was taking part in the Youth Recognition project.” Kyle Lacey-Janetzki - “The most notable experience on Garma 2014 for me was the culture shock. Stepping onto the Garma site, in all its dry, red dust glory, is something I will never forget. The environment, mixed with the people we met, showed me the real Australia.” Jack Willemsen - “I thank all the teachers for making this experience the best it could possibly be.” Emma Beeston - “I thoroughly enjoyed the traditional activities and the leadership workshops.” Brittany Cooper - “The experiences that I have had on this trip will impact me forever.” Jessica Grehan - “It also helped me realise that I need to appreciate the little things more in life when I saw how excited the little kids at Melville Island got when we told them we were giving them football boots. Chloe McMahon - “I appreciated how the Indigenous Australians accepted us into their culture with a sense of pride.” Georgia Hayes - “Not only was the culture an important part but also gaining new relationships with people from other schools and also strengthening the relationships with people from school.” Lachlan Haffenden - “The youth forum was also a great time as it helped me come out of my comfort zone and get out and meet new people.” Erin Allanson - “It was amazing to attend indigenous schools where the teachers and students welcomed us with open arms and to share with them our stories and experiences.” Corey Fysh - “Garma was an eye-opening, heart touching and a once in a lifetime experience. Never again will I have the privilege of being with an amazing group of people travelling deep into Arnhem Land on an life changing spiritual journey.” Joshua Connolly - “This trip has really changed my outlook on the Aboriginal people and makes me realise what such a rich history these people possess.

Those of you who were saw Q&A on Monday night would have enjoyed the challenging and very interesting show that focused on racism, indigenous education and closing the gap in general between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. Another highlight of the week this week was the performance of our Dance Troupe. They competed in an eisteddfod on Tuesday and came away with two seconds and one third place! Well done to the students and to Mrs Stephens and Ms Hickey for their work with Dance Troupe. SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Programme) A little about the programme: This well-respected program brings together the finest young musicians, under the tutelage of a team of eminent international and national conductors, in a world-class environment. Its pursuit of excellence defines it as the highest quality performance avenue available to young ensemble-based instrumentalists outside of the Queensland Conservatorium and the Young Conservatorium. In 2014, this program will continue to offer Voice, String, Wind, Brass and Percussion students an intensive four day program that culminates in a gala concert in the Conservatorium Theatre, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, South Bank. This year we are pleased and proud to have nominated several of our students and have just been informed that four of our students have made it into the programme. It is a great honour and one of the students that were nominated and chosen. The following students will be representing our school in the workshops being held from Thursday 2nd to the 5th of October with a big concert on the Sunday, 5th of October. Natisha Ford – Alto Saxophone; Eryn Fletcher – Alto Saxophone; Kyle Lacey-Janezki – Baritone Saxophone and Brittany Cooper – Trumpet. A big Congratulations to these students! We would also like to congratulate Matthew Louden as part of the Brisbane Brass 4 Band. Matthew plays 2nd Euphonium and his brass band has been a member for 18 months. On July 20th their Brass band managed to win their category against some amazing top brass bands. A big congratulations to Matthew. Another big congratulations to the following students who took AMEB music exams this term. Year 8 – Coach: Daniel Out The Year 8 boys have been extremely enthusiastic in their preparation for the season, showing up to training with plenty of numbers and an attitude to succeed. Last week saw the boys take the field for their debut game against St. Paul’s. Some narrowly missed chances and a couple of unlucky bounces saw the boys go 2-0 down just after half time. However our lads didn’t let this affect their game and kept trying, playing some really good football, showing great skill, shape and confidence on the ball. When the final whistle blew, the score line read 4-2 St Columban’s, a great effort. Week 2 saw us take on a very fancied Orminston team. Our boys were confident going into the game, coming down to some great improvement at training during the week and after their success the game before. Unfortunately, the Orminston boys were able to take advantage of a number of mismatches across the field and eventually ran up a big score line against us. I was proud to see the boys never give up and show a positive attitude during such a difficult experience. After the game the lads were naturally upset at the loss, but were determined to improve in the games to come. Final score StC 0 – St Pauls 15. Year 9 - Coach: Jimmy Davis & Connor George Week 2 and the boys showed a lot of heart and determination against a quality opposition. Ormiston flew out of the blocks to lead 4-0 at half time but to the boys credit they dug in their heels and made them work for the whole second half. They were justly rewarded for their efforts with a goal from Joseph Polsoni who was set up with a peach of a ball from Nathan Manning. With many players playing their first season of football, there were many encouraging signs looking forward towards the remaining games and the years to follow. Final score StC 1 - Ormiston 6 Year 10 - Coach: Jimmy Davis & Connor George Week 2 and the Year 10s continue to improve as a squad with another strong showing. The boys did everything right bar putting the ball in the net. Hitting the post 3 times added to the frustration after missing numerous chances. Special mention for Caleb Walker who was easily the best player on the field with another outstanding game at the back. The results will come for this squad as long as they're patient. Final score StC 0 - Ormiston 2 Second XI - Coach: Alex Locke The Second XI had a very tough first game of the season against a strong team from St Paul’s. Our defense was strong for the first quarter of the match until fitness seemed to take its toll late in the first half. The boys were kept very busy and solid games came from Kelsey Webber, Nick Pollock, and Jayden Henderson. Final score StC 0 – St Pauls 11. Week 2 and the 2nds had another tough game against Ormiston. Some good buildup to score from Jayden and Jack, hitting the cross bar with a great long distance strike, and two magnificent goals from the team. Definite potential for improvement but teamwork is improving with a solid game from both Louie Beaty and Morgan Craik. Final score StC 2 – Ormiston 11. First XI - Coach: Reuben Pather Week 2 and the First XI played a good game against Ormiston but in the end the opposition played a stronger match. Jack Calvert scored our only goal and his first for the season which gave the Firsts some hope, but we lacked discipline in our passing game and bringing the ball up from out of our goal, an area we will need to improve on. The boys are working better as a team and finding their place on the field. Thanks to Justin Thompson and Scott Taylor for helping the team out while a couple of players are at GARMA. Looking forward to playing Redeemer College this Saturday and hope to turn things around. Final score StC 1 – Ormiston 3.
