Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! With the objective of making forest concessions a more transparent, responsible and inclusive way to sustainably manage forests in the tropics, FAO has recently released the first voluntary guidelines for forest concessions in the tropics. At the the 13th session of the UN Forum on Forests, where the guidelines were launched, Eva Müller, Director of FAO's Forestry Policy and Resources Division, highlighted the multiple socio-economic and environmental benefits concessions can have if well managed, and how they can increase the value of standing forests for present and future generations. (In English, Spanish and French) The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change of the Seychelles will implement its new national forestry inventory with the technical help of FAO. The aim of this concerted effort is to provide exact information on the state of forests in the archipelago, as well as up-to-date data on endemic species. (In French)

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and FAO are supporting the Kyrgyz Republic in its efforts to design a national development strategy to better cope with climate change. The ecological sustainability of its forests will be central in the strategy, with forest monitoring one of the planned tools to measure and achieve its goals. (In English) Landscape restoration projects and the contribution of the REDD+ Programme to their implementation, both on a national and regional level, were an important part of the discussion at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Rainforest Summit, which was held in Yogyakarta at the end of April and attended by around 1 200 experts. (In English) In collaboration with the Government of Canada, FAO is supporting Honduras in its efforts to improve forest governance through a project aimed at empowering women and young people by providing them with useful technical and managerial abilities. Con el objetivo de hacer de las concesiones forestales un dispositivo más transparente, responsable e inclusivo para gestionar de forma sostenible los bosques en los trópicos, la FAO ha publicado recientemente en inglés las primeras directrices voluntarias para las concesiones forestales en los trópicos. En la decimotercera sesión del Foro de las Naciones Unidas para los bosques (UNFF por sus siglas en inglés), donde se lanzaron las directrices, Eva Müller, Directora de la División de Política y Recursos Forestales de

la FAO, destacó los múltiples beneficios socioeconómicos y ambientales que las concesiones pueden tener si se gestionan bien, y cómo ellas pueden también aumentar el valor de los bosques en pie para las generaciones presentes y futuras. (En inglés, español y francés) El Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, Energía y Cambio Climático de Seychelles llevará a cabo su nuevo inventario forestal nacional con la ayuda técnica de la FAO. El objetivo de este esfuerzo concertado es proporcionar información exacta sobre el estado de los bosques en el archipiélago, así como datos actualizados sobre las especies endémicas. Avec l'objectif de faire des concessions forestières un moyen plus transparent, responsable et inclusif de gérer durablement les forêts sous les tropiques, la FAO a récemment publié en anglais les premières directives volontaires pour les concessions forestières dans les tropiques. Lors de la 13ème session du Forum des Nations Unies sur les forêts, où les lignes directrices ont été lancées, Eva Müller, Directrice de la Division des politiques et ressources forestières de la FAO, a souligné les multiples bienfaits socioéconomiques et environnementaux qu'elles peuvent apporter si elles sont bien gérées, et comment elles peuvent contribuer à faire accroître la valeur des forêts pour les générations actuelles et futures. FAO Forestry announcements FAO aid appeal to support Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh FAO News 04/05/18 The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched an $8.3 million appeal to support Rohingya refugees and host populations - around 1.2 million people - in Bangladesh. The increasing need to cut forest for firewood has been depleting the environment, intensifying the risk of deadly landslides and flash floods during this year’s monsoon season. FAO, Belarus and Ukraine act jointly against pine dieback FAO News Europe and Central Asia 25/04/18 Pine forests in Belarus and neighbouring Ukraine fall on hard times nowadays. Plant pests and natural disturbances such as unfavourable weather and environmental conditions hamper their life and survival. Starting today here in Gomel, Belarus, an FAO-organized expert meeting is about to look closer at the problem and validate the primary causes of pine dieback, with a focus on early detection and pest management. FAO urges Asia-Pacific media executives to become more active in helping to achieve the 2030 agenda for sustainable development FAO News Asia and the Pacific 11/05/18 Public and private sector media organizations across Asia-Pacific should be encouraged to take a greater stake in helping the region achieve the world’s sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 2 on Zero Hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations said today. Arabic, Chinese, Italian REDD+ and forest restoration practices highlighted during the 3rd Asia-Pacific Rainforest Summit in Yogyakarta FAO REDD+ News 10/05/18 The summit participants noted various opportunities and needs for forest restoration in the region. Many countries have already designated large areas of land for forest restoration. While there are challenges in data quality which prevent the understanding of the exact potential, improvement in forest monitoring systems through new technologies will help countries in the region in assessing results of their efforts.

Restoration method could be vital to achieve zero land degradation FAO AAD News 03/05/18 A major EU-funded FAO-programme called Action Against Desertification has paved the way for large-scale land restoration in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Its restoration method could become a vital tool in support of efforts to achieve a land degradation neutral world, experts said in Rome today, presenting key achievements of the programme that is entering its final year.

La creciente necesidad de talar los bosques para obtener leña ha estado agotando los recursos ambientales, lo que intensifica el riesgo de peligrosos deslizamientos de tierra e inundaciones repentinas durante la temporada de monzones de este año.

La nécessité croissante de couper du bois de forêt pour se chauffer a contribué à appauvrir l'environnement, intensifiant par ailleurs le risque de glissements de terrain mortels et de crues soudaines lors de la prochaine saison de moussons.

New FAO publications Making forest concessions in the tropics work to achieve the 2030 Agenda: Voluntary Guidelines The specific objective of these Voluntary Guidelines is to serve as guidance for making forest concessions an effective economic instrument of forest policy in the context of the 2030 Agenda, transforming them into an instrument capable of delivering sustainable forest management in all its dimensions, and generating socio-economic benefits to relevant stakeholders. Rethinking Forest Concessions. Improving the allocation of state-owned forests for better economic, social and environmental outcomes This report forms part of a review aimed at providing advice on improving forest concession systems in tropical forests. The review was carried out by FAO in cooperation with the International Tropical Timber Organization, the Brazilian Forest Service, the Center for International Forestry Research and Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement. The report is based on three regional reports produced by consultants, discussions at an expert meeting in Rome in November 2015, and a literature review.
