Report of the President
Dave Tyrell
2018
Dave Tyrell, BSN, RN
“Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and a forgiving heart, one who looks for the best in people. Leave people better than you found them.” Marvin J. Ashton Consistently for over a decade the nursing profession has been ranked as the most trusted professionals by the public. Looking into the future there is no doubt that this trend will continue. Being consistently voted most trusted is a true indication that the public recognizes nurses for our compassion, devotion, knowledge and dedication to our patients and profession.
One thing we must all keep in mind is that the trust the public has in our profession has been earned and nurtured by all of us no matter where we might practice. Take a moment to yourself to recognize how much of a valued role you play in not only your patient’s lives but in promoting your chosen profession as the most trusted profession year after year.
As you go through those many tough days trying to meet the constant demands of your profession, always keep in mind that whether you realize it or not you have touched someone’s life in a positive way and they are forever grateful to you for it. “If you’re not at the table, then you’ll probably end up on the menu.”

Report of the Treasurer
2018
Nicki Aaker
By: Nicki Aaker, MSN, RN Nevada Nurses Association (NNA) is financially stable; however, the need to be financially prudent now and in the future is still a focus for the board. NNA has a financial reserve which has been set aside to ensure NNA’s ability to continue to address future needs. NNA relies on dues for the majority of the organization’s income which means that building our membership is crucial for our income base. As we plan for the future, the organization is looking for other revenue opportunities. In November and December 2017, NNA partnered with the Nevada Organization of Nurse Leaders (NONL) to hold a convention in Reno. Both organizations received a small amount of income from the event, but more importantly provided the attendees with many good educational presentations. The Bioterrorism continuing education course continues to be an income generator. The income has increased since the course has been updated, is narrated and the certificate is automatically generated once the quiz questions are answered correctly. On the expense side, legislative efforts are part of NNA’s mission. The expense for the lobbyist continues to be one of the largest expenses, even though this is not a legislative year. Legislative efforts continue during the year Nevada’s legislature is not in session. Our lobbyist is Jessica Ferrato from Crowley & Ferrato. She assists the legislative committee, and NNA’s President, Dave Tyrell with making decisions required to address legislation affecting nursing in Nevada. She also networks with the legislators, other lobbyists, and legislative staff in order to provide education and information about nursing and the issues that are important to us. Please read the legislative report for more details. Other expenses include continuing education, contract fees for the accountant and Executive Director, and general operating expenses. Please attend the Annual Membership Meeting, currently planned for September 22, 2018, to receive a more detailed Treasurer report.

Professional Development
By: Nicki Aaker, MSN, RN
One of the most exciting accomplishments this past year has been the Continuing Education Resources that can be accessed from the Nevada Nurses Association (NNA) website – www.nvnurses.org. The CEUs are located under the Continuing Education tab. At this time, we are offering the Bioterrorism Self-Study Course and Preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders which has been developed and presented by Catherine S. Wade, M.S., M.S.N., R.N., P.H.N., L.A.D.C.-P.C. NNA is always looking for more courses for our members so if you have a course you developed and would like to share it with nurses, please contact Nicki Aaker at [email protected] or 775-843-8198. During July 2017 – June 2018, the CEU opportunities offered to nurses include:
• Addictions Update for the ESI Management Group,
• Antimicrobial Stewardship for NNA District #1,
• Bioterrorism*,
• Bleeding Control,
• Bullying and Incivility Training,
• Critical Issues Facing Children and Adolescents for the ESI Management Group,
• Generations Conference for the ESI Management Group,
• Lateral Violence,
• Lateral Violence Train-the-Trainer Course,
• NNA/Nevada Organization of Nurse Leaders (NONL) Convention,
• Nevada POLST Update,
• safeTALK,
• safeTALK train the trainer, and
• Youth Violence in Communities: The Roles of Nurses for NNA District #1
*Nurses in Nevada have a licensure requirement to take a one-time four (4) hour educational course “relating to consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction” (NRS 632.343). NNA offers a course that fulfills this requirement and is approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing. This course has been updated and is now narrated with quiz questions throughout the course. Once this post test is passed, the CEU Certificate will be printed immediately. As an additional benefit, nurses will be able to retrieve their certificate electronically if lost.

Darlene C. Bujold MSHI, BSN, RN
With the beginning of a new year, district one board members are collaborating on exciting plans for our future. We are committed to growing our membership and engaging our current members in a variety of creative venues. Our current membership numbers 281 nurses with 50 of those coming from Northern NV rural settings.
In August of 2018, D1 hosted an educational Symposium in Elko, NV at Great Basin College. This was an opportunity to offer free CEUs to members and at a small fee for rural nurses. Topics included suicide prevention training (SafeTALK) and “Stop the Bleeding.”
The board has found that hosting free breakfasts to members, that include speaker presentations that also provide CEUs to attendees, has proven successful in member engagement and growing our numbers. Non-members are responsible only for cost of their meal.
We are working closely in support of the Nevada Nurses Foundation (NNF) upcoming events. The 4th annual Big Hat High Tea held at the Governors Mansion in Carson City has become recognized for its whimsical musical venue that each year has presented a themed event complete with amazing décor, fun costumes, delightful entertainment, and luscious food. There is also an event in the planning stages that will recognize standout NV nurses. By supporting these events we gain recognition and grow our membership.
We intend to reach out further to our local educational institutions in order to present the benefits of NNA/ANA membership to graduating nurses. We will also be working closely with the Continuing Education Committee to consider expanding our online offerings to include expansion and revitalization of the NNAs initiative to end incivility and bullying in nursing. We will collaborate with the Website Committee in the exciting new venture of creating NNAs stand-alone website, that will reflect Nevada’s unique character, legislative referendums, and interactively assess members needs and desires.
“Nevada Nurses Day at the Legislature” on February 26, 2019 will provide D1 with opportunity to play host to members throughout the state. This event allows our powerful presence to be known throughout the halls of our capital in order to provide a proactive presence in legislative and regulatory activities for professional nursing practice.

NNA Rural and Frontier Committee
Melissa Washabaugh, BSN, RN
The NNA Rural and Frontier Committee has been very active this year. Previous committee chair Heidi Johnson chose to step down from her position to focus on other projects. I have been honored to take her place and continue the great work the committee has done representing nursing in rural Nevada.
The committee has chosen to take on projects that reflect the mission of NNA including health education, public service, and nursing leadership activities. One of our biggest projects this year has been the completion of the safeTALK suicide alertness train–the–trainer initiative. Last year the committee recognized the need for improved mental health awareness and services in our communities. We chose to take on the task of training rural nurses in this evidence-based, entry-level program to help create suicide safer communities. This project involved coordinating with healthcare partners and the completion of multiple training days for each trainer. Through many volunteer hours several committee members have completed all required steps to become certified trainers. Dozens of healthcare professionals have already benefited from these efforts and we are now focusing our efforts on scheduling trainings for the upcoming year.
Melissa Washabaugh

Nevada Nurses Association25
NNA Rural and Frontier Committee
2018Another project the committee participated in was the NNA/NONL convention this past fall. The rural committee, through Heidi Johnson’s advisement, presented a panel on the challenges of staffing in rural nursing. Our panel included several committee nurses as well as guest speakers Dr. John Packham, of the Nevada State Office of Rural Health, and Patty Wilcox, CEO of Pershing General Hospital. The panel received positive feedback from many diverse healthcare professionals. This speaking event was a great way for our members to showcase the leadership skills of rural nurses.
The rural committee has also continued to support the Nevada Nurses Foundation. The committee commissioned three hand-painted signs from local artist Katrina Weidner which were auctioned off at the NNF’s Big Hat High Tea event. In addition to the art donations the committee continues to collect funds and designates proceeds from CE events to the rural nursing scholarship distributed by the NNF. It is a priority of the committee to support nursing education for those dedicated to working in our underserved areas.
Our last big event prior to press time is the coordination of the Rural Health Symposium being held in Elko this August. The symposium was created as a way to offer continuing education and networking for a variety of healthcare professionals working in rural areas. The symposium topics were chosen based on relevancy and requests from frontline providers. These topics include disaster preparedness, the opioid crisis, pediatric sepsis, and the government endorsed Stop the Bleed program. By making this symposium open to community partners such as EMS, firefighters, and law enforcement, the committee acknowledges the strong bonds of teamwork that public service employees share in rural areas.
Our members are excited about future endeavors in the upcoming year including the continuation of safeTALK trainings, offering other CE opportunities, and presenting a guest speaker at the NNA Nurses Day at the Legislature event. As the new committee chair I would like to express a huge thank you to our members for all their hard work. We couldn’t have accomplished so much without such dedicated nurses striving to make a difference.

In any organization membership is the driving force and this has been an exciting year for NNA and its members. We have seen an increase in student subscribers and new graduate nurses signing up to join NNA. Their involvement in professional organizations, like NNA, is a huge step in the advancement of our profession. At the 2018 ANA Membership Assembly, ANA discussed “Transforming the nation’s health through the power of nursing” and there is power in numbers. I encourage each of you to get your colleagues involved, ask them to join you in NNA and help advance the nursing profession. We have several committees that may peek one of their interest or even one of yours.
