WHO WE ARECUTTING EDGE, QUALIFIEDFor 25 years the New London Orchestra has been at the forefront of orchestral playing in the UK. In that time we have built an enviable reputation for high-quality playing and innovative programming. In repertoire ranging from Handel to Honegger, we have delighted press and public alike.

The NLO has worked with many of the leading figures in British Classical Music, performing at London’s most popular concert halls and many of the UK’s most celebrated festivals. Nicholas Daniel, Julian Lloyd Webber, Joanna MacGregor and the Endellion Quartet are just a few of the artists with whom we have shared the stage.

Our mission is to harness the tremendous power music has to change the lives of people. Through our brand Adventures in Music® we work to broaden the audience for music by placing education at the heart of all our activities.

25 YEARS OF PERFORMANCEThe NLO is one of the UK’s most exhilarating and adventurous performing ensembles. We have long been recognised for our vibrant performances of lesser-known works and are credited with putting superb but neglected composers back on the map. We have championed the works of Martinů, Virgil Thompson, Roussel, Kabalevsky, and composers of British Light Music.

EAST LONDON RESIDENCYIn 2011 the NLO became the first-ever orchestra-in-residence at Stratford Circus, in the London Borough of Newham. With our residency in East London we strive to give world-class performances that are accessible to people of all backgrounds and of all ages.

By investing in artistic collaborations and excellent music we seek to develop audiences outside of the traditional venues, while exploring imaginative presentations for our concerts. These are introduced from stage by the conductor and embrace choreography, film and visual arts, installation and a variety of genres.

CONCERT HISTORY

A VILLAGE ROMEO AND JULIETQueen Elizabeth Hall (September 2012)To celebrate the 150th birthday of Frederick Delius the NLO and a cast of distinguished soloists gave a rare performance of his opera, A Village Romeo and Juliet, to a sell-out crowd at the Southbank Centre. Based on the story of the same title by Swiss author Gottfried Keller, the opera’s six scenes contain music of unexpected beauty and power.

MODERN MUSIC FOR STRINGSStratford Circus (October 2012)In year 2 of its residency in East London, the NLO presented an absorbing collection of rarely performed works for string orchestra by some of the most charismatic and influential modern composers. To the rapturous applause of a packed house, the orchestra gave electric performances of Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt and a UK premier of Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight with choreography by The People Pile.

“...the performance absolutely fizzes under the baton of Ronald Corp.” Daily Mail

YOUNG PERFORMERS SERIESThe NLO provides a stage for the world’s brightest emerging musicians through its Young Performers Concert Series, held at the Foundling Museum.

The eighth annual season features recitals by Australian soloists, while previous years have introduced awardees of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, the Musicians Benevolent Fund, students from the Purcell School, and young musicians from Spain.

ORCHITECTUREThe House Mill (June 2012)The NLO partnered with artist Thor McIntyre-Burnie to create a site-specific sound installation and performance, set within the creaking timbers of an C18th tidal mill. Joined by young musicians from Newham Youth Orchestra, we performed Beethoven’s Symphony no. 3 whilst dispersed throughout the five-floor building. Each audience member was sent on a journey of perception, navigating their own sonic pathway through the musicians.

NOYE’S FLUDDETrinity Buoy Wharf (May 2013)The NLO brought together young people from Newham and France to celebrate the 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten. We worked in partnership with Orchestre National de Lille, Newham Youth Orchestra, and many East London schools, to produce international performances of the elaborate and imaginative opera, Noye’s Fludde. The young musicians and singers were joined by actress Tameka Empson alongside a starry cast of soloists.

LEGACY OF RECORDINGS

Education is central to everything the NLO does. We devise ground-breaking projects which use music to elevate learning in key curriculum subjects. These are the focus of published evaluations by our partner, the Institute of Education. Their team has shown a potent link between music and other subjects which can lead to advancement in both areas.

MUSIC & LITERACYLiteracy through Music (2011-13), is our flagship programme currently taking place in Newham. It uses music to improve the teaching of literacy in primary schools. The IoE have evidenced striking improvements in reading ability as a result of our workshops, which have been delivered to hundreds of teachers and pupils.

MUSIC & MATHS2+2=5 (1999-2009), children across London had the opportunity to access mathematics through practical music workshops, exploring the intrinsic links between these subjects and raising achievement in both areas. This led to a three-day summer school and events at the Royal Institution.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITYMUSIC & SCIENCEGood Vibrations (2001 & 2010), aimed at tackling poor science results. Workshops were given in schools which used music to shed light on areas of the science curriculum such as sound waves, the human ear and synaesthesia.

Music and the Mind (2003), was a festival of music and neurology in collaboration with University College London. We looked at how the brain perceives, processes and responds to music during lectures by experts in the field, performances and workshops.

“...it is clear that a specially designed music programme can make a difference...projects

like this could motivate and excite children about music and reading all over the country.”

Professor Graham Welch (IoE)

COMMUNITY SPIRITFor over a decade the NLO has produced large-scale music projects within the local communities of Camden, Hammersmith, Haringey, Westminster, Barking and Dagenham, Hackney and Newham. Our vision is that through these unique projects we can become integral to the cultural fabric of the areas in which we work.

We work to develop people’s creativity, skills and confidence, and to strengthen community spirit and cohesion.

WORK IN EAST LONDONLeading up to the London 2012 Olympics the NLO ran a series of projects entitled, Newham Welcomes the World (2007-2012), organised in collaboration with local schools, community organisations and businesses.

We gave hundreds of local residents the opportunity to take part in new and life-enhancing musical activities, celebrating the major events which continue to shape the future of their neighbourhood.

“NLO have made an important contribution to celebrating the transformation of this part of London ...” Stephen Timms MP

“NLO reflects the qualities of inclusiveness, imagination and innovation that flow from our fertile mix of cultures...they are immensely skilled in using music to bring people together.”Lyn Brown MP
