CMD Message

3

From the Desk of CMDDear colleagues,

my greetings to all of you.

We have entered into the second half of the fiscal 2012-13 and our half yearly results also have been published. I am happy to note

that we have shown very good performance in Production as well as in Financial fronts. Our net sales have increased by 16% as

compared to corresponding period of the previous year and earned a net profit of ` 623.31 crore, against the net profit of

` 621.18crore earned for the half year ended 30.9.2011.

Also, I am glad to note that we have achieved MoU excellent

level target in TPS-I Expn., TPS-II, Mine-IA and lignite

production in Mine-II. Put together, when compared to the

corresponding half year ended 30.09.2011, there is an

increase in the lignite production by 5.68 Lakh Tonnes and

Power generation by 547 Million Units showing a growth of

4.60% and 5.94% respectively.

In the second quarter of the F.Y 2012-13, when comparing

with the corresponding period of 2011-12, I am very happy

to find that we have gained a substantial growth rate in

Physical and Financial performance at 1.8% in overburden

removal, 12.75% in lignite production and 6.96% in power

generation. During this period our Net profit has also

increased to ̀ 334.84 crore, registering a growth of 20.30%.

However, in respect of power generation in TPS-I, Over

burden removal in Mine-I & Mine-II and lignite production in

Mine-I, a marginal fall with respect to excellent level has

resulted an impact on our set targets for the half year ending September 2012. I expect that with the hard work and sincere efforts of

each and every employee of the respective units, we will be able to wipeout the shortfall in the subsequent months and make good

the production to sustain the growth.

Our Projects under implementation, viz, 2X 250 MW TPS- II Expn. and 2X500 MW NTPL Project require utmost attention and

monitoring to expedite early commissioning. Indeed our close persuasion with CMD/BHEL have geared up the erection activities

and now it is expected that Unit I & II of 2X 250 MW TPS- II Expn. shall be commissioned in November 2012 and March 2013

respectively. We should also see that both the units of NTPL Project must achieve the commissioning by December 2013 and March

2014. With regard to 2X500 MW Neyveli New Thermal Power Project (NNTPP), I hope that tenders for major packages would be

finalized at the earliest and project activities would be commenced soon.

It is worthy to note that we have adopted recently two innovative technologies for further improvements in lignite production system in

Mines. Mine-II Lignite Bunker Control System is now automated with 16 PLC stations for the control of lignite receipt and dispatch.

Dust suppression System has been introduced in Bucket Wheel Excavators of Mine-I for the effective dust suppression during

operation and thereby reduce the air pollution.

I am happy to announce that 56th Annual General Body Meeting of our Company was held on 14.09.2012 at Chennai in which a

dividend of 28% was declared for the year 2011-12, which is the highest since inception of the Company. We have also presented a

cheque for ̀ 439.39 crore to Govt. of India as dividend for the year 2011-2012 towards GoI's share holdings.

We are proud to say, NLC is always very much considerate to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). I am very glad to note that

under the CSR scheme, we have initiated a new Health Care System 'AROGYA' for the welfare of peripheral villagers. Various

schemes like Skill Development Programme for Students, Training programs for the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) are also being

arranged for their benefits. Further, as per the directives of Department of Public Enterprises, we have set up a Sub-committee of

Directors to monitor the CSR activities.

I am happy to state that on 06.10.2012, we signed an MoU with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidhyut Utpadan Nigam Limited ( UPRVUNL) to

form the Joint venture company NLC-UPRVUNL Power Limited (NUPL) to establish a 3 x 660 MW Coal based Thermal power

project at Ghathampur, UP. Uttar Pradesh Govt. has already accorded clearance for land acquisition of 1000 hectares and allocation

of 80 cu. secs of water required for this project. Land acquisition and pre project activities have already been commenced. It is now

in our priority to pursue vigorously for the early approval of the projects and its implementation on time.

In this occasion I wish to remind you all, that every year III quarter (October-December) is most challenging, as we have to tackle an

added problem of monsoon. I am confident that Mines authorities shall take proper monsoon preparedness plan so that mining

operation shall not get affected in monsoon havoc and the linked Power Stations shall not suffer on account of lignite supply.

Let us strive forward to the second half of this financial year with more determination and commitments for achieving the set targets.

B.Surender MohanWith regards,

the top of the BWE. A water jet drawn upto the tip of the bucket wheel to

sprinkle water on the cutting face of the mines, sprays for 3 hours per filling

and covers the area effectively. Operators of the BWE can control the
